The product, in the report: Gas stove with 4 burners on top
In June we purchased a new GE gas stove from Best Buy in Blaine, MN. Model # JGBS60DEK2WW Serial # 131601P This stove has the control knobs for the top burners in front of the stove with a safety feature that will not allow you to turn the burners on without first depressing the knob then turning the knob all the way counter clock wise to the left as far as it will go. Once you turn it as far as it will go, the igniter starts to click lighting the burner. You then turn the burner clockwise to the desired heat setting.
The locking system is working as designed and the igniter is working as designed. The problem is, if you are reaching above the stove to get something out of the microwave, cupboard or if you are cleaning the top-back of the stove and you lean into the stove and slightly twist your body from right to left, you inadvertently turn the stove on but you are not turning it far enough for the igniter to kick in so you begin filling the kitchen with gas.
This has happened to us at least a dozen times so far and there have been 4 incidents where we did not catch it, filling the house with gas.
The stove we replaced worked in much the same fashion except the moment the gas was turned on, the igniter kicked in alerting the user that you had just turned on the stove. If the user did not hear the clicking, it started the burner so all you did was burn some extra gas you would have preferred not to.
I called GE and spoke with two different people and explained the situation. Both said there was nothing they could do because the stove was operating the way it was designed. The case number they gave me was: [REDACTED]
I called Best Buy in Blaine, MN and they said also, there was nothing they could do but sell us a new stove.
This, in my opinion is a design flaw and needs to be fixed before someone dies.
I will be buying a new stove tonight but someone should do something about this.
