Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Capital Range GCR304N - freestanding gas range

Capital Range GCR304N - gas range

The oven turns itself on when the control dial is firmly set to the off position. This creates a risk of fire as the oven may turn itself on and burn at a high temperature when no one is present. I contacted the manufacturer to report the condition. After speaking to two employees who appeared indifferent, I was able to reach a member of the management team who agreed to send a contract repair technician to inspect the range. The manufacturer also shipped me a replacement thermostat under the assumption that the thermostat installed in the range was defective. The repair technician inspected the range and observed it turn itself on when the control dial was in the off position. He then inspected the replacement thermostat and was able to reproduce the condition. According to the technician, the tolerance between on and off is very small and the thermostat can connect to be in the on position while the control dial is set to off. He demonstrated the replacement thermostat’s failure several times. The technician advised, and I agreed, that it would not be appropriate to replace the thermostat in the range with a clearly defective replacement part.

I would like the root cause of the dangerous condition to be identified and appropriate repair or replacement to be made by the manufacturer.
