The product, in the report: Viking 27” electric double wall oven
Product: Viking electric 27” double wall oven. Install: professionally installed by a local appliance store where it was purchased. A certified Viking dealer. Age of unit: 6-7 months. Originally installed November of 2013 around thanksgiving. Home: Built in 1993. No changes in electrical wiring, updates, etc. Weather: perfect, 80 degrees, clear sky. Day and time: Wednesday May 14th, 2014 at 5p.m. Prior issues with the unit: bad convection fan and bad main control panel upon within 1-2 days after initial installation. Details: around 5p.m. both the upper and lower oven were turned on. They were both set to bake. The upper was set to 350 degrees and the lower to 400 degrees. After coming up to temperature for 10 minutes there was a loud sound consistent with a blown bulb but much much louder. This was followed immediately by the unmistakable smell of an electrical fire. Flames could be seen within the unit where the cooling vents are located between the upper and lower oven. Fire department called. Fire put out and the unit unplugged. Local appliance store contacted. Viking contacted. Awaiting response. Unit still in place. Any additional damage to the cabinet unknown at this time.

The product, in the report: Viking double oven
Oven spontaneously started sparking around the door and created a smell of burning electrical insulation. The service technician we called found that some of the wiring for the product was routed too close to the door hinge, resulting in the insulation becoming frayed and causing a connection to the frame of the oven.

The product, in the report: Viking Designer Series Built-in Electric Oven (30” Convection Touch Control Model: DSOE305TSS Serial No.: 32210C11296
Attempted to run the self-clean cycle (second time since purchase). Approximately 1 1/2 hrs. into cycle, we became aware of an alarming situation with erratic codes, unresponsive key pad, and continuous beeping. The temperature display read 840 degrees. We realized that danger of fire was imminent when the fan stopped running, the temperature was increasing, and the surrounding cabinet was separating. Since we were unable to turn OFF the oven, we had no alternative but to switch off the circuit breaker to this device. Can’t stop thinking about the potential of fire if we had not been home when this occurred!

No one hurt Made Aug 8, 2012, sent to the company Aug 22, 2012, published by CPSC Sep 6, 2012
The product, in the report: built-in electric convection oven
Viking electric built in oven was set on self-clean. Within an hour on starting the clean cycle, smoke started pouring out of the oven. My smoke alarm was connected to the fire department, so they responded within minutes. The house filled with dense smoke. The oven was so hot that firefighters had to wait a long time in order to remove the oven and check the wall behind it and the wood cabinets for hot spots. They oven had overheated and set the cabinet next to the oven on fire. When the Viking Rep removed the side panel, the fans and wiring were melted inside the oven. He condemned and oven and said it was “fried”. The fire department said another ten minutes and my house would have burned. They said it was good that I was home and had a direct line from the smoke detector to the fire department. Also my breaker box was labelled, so they could turn off the breaker to the oven. All those things helped prevent total destruction of my home.

The product, in the report: Built-in Electric Double wall oven
I turned on my oven to pre-heat it and in few minutes I heard a strange sound and looked inside my oven. There was a fire in my oven. The heating element burnt through. What if I hadn’t been close by and heard and/or saw this? The company has sent me to a local repair unit and has taken no responsibility for the fire hazard.

No one hurt Made Jul 6, 2011, published by CPSC Jul 28, 2011
The product, in the report: Viking Double Oven (Electric) Model DED0527TSS, Serial # 062907C00059972, Installed 7/31/2008
Viking Electric Double Oven, Model DED0527TSS, Serial # 062907C00059972, Installed 7/31/2008. Shortly after it was installed the upper door did not close firmly, leaving the light on inside, and preventing the oven from reaching the set temperature. The company records warranty service September 29, 2008 for repair under warranty. There were additional visits to this remote location, but the servicing agency, Kendall Distributing and Viking have no records, according to them.
Returning to this seasonal home in late June, we found the upper door did not close properly, remaining 8 mm ajar and not reaching set temperature: set to 375 degrees it reaches 240 to 325 degrees, and does not reach the set temperature in even several hours.
Viking claims that they have not encountered such problems in the past, but the professional repairman states to me it was a recurrent problem fixed by an established procedure. Viking further informs me that they will not compensate me or the distributor or repairman for parts or labor.
This is a serious safety problem, notwithstanding Vikings unwillingness to acknowledge the issue. My fear is that others will not know how to deal with the faulty hinges on this and other Viking models, as the company claims to me in phone calls they recorded that there have been no recalls, bulletins or special actions over hinges or door closing issues.
