The product, in the report: 30 inch electri range
electric range surface unit goes to high heat setting (unit glows cherry red), regardless of setting of control. this has happened the last two ranges we have owned and is currently happening to the range we own now. the problem is intermittent at first, but gradually becomes constant. This has happened on two different brands. if the surface unit control is going to fail, for safety it should go to an off state NOT full HIGH. this has happened a total of six times, all four controls on a Frigidaire and currently on two units of a Tappan. please note that this has the potential of causing fires attributed to “food left unattended”. while this is technically correct, the fire would occur in a much shorter time frame than if the control was working properly. It would also be much harder for firemen to find at the scene due to knobs melting and general destruction that occurs during a fire. to state, surface unit is turned on to medium heat (I seldom use high setting), either immediately or after a period of time (usually seconds to minutes) the surface unit goes to high heat. this has to be a control issue because if there was a short to ground the surface unit would not go to high heat. a ground would cause the unit to heat at about medium heat (120 volts) and high heat requires the voltage controlled by the unit control (220 volts0
