The product, in the report: standard 30” electric stove

I have severe arthritis. In my kitchen, I steady myself by holding on to the kitchen counter, stove or refrigerator. I was holding on to the oven-door handle when it broke off and fell to the floor. I fell, chest down, on to the top of the stove. Fortunately, I was not cooking at the time, or I would have been severely burned on my hands, arms, chest and face. Examination of the handle -- 28 inches long and roughly an inch in diameter -- revealed that it was attached to the stove with only TWO half-inch screws mounted into eighth-inch plastic trim. It was the plastic trim that splintered. The screws had NO contact with the metal surface of the stove, the metal lining of the door, its metal frame or anything else solid. I’m lucky I did not spend days in the hospital, weeks in recovery, or lose my job.

He stated that the company was contacted but they are unwilling to replace the unsafe knobs unless he pays for the replacement. Caller believes that the replacement knobs will be still unsafe. Caller stated that they started experiencing the issue about 6 months ago and he has children in the home.

Caller stated that he has only had the stove for 2 years. Caller feels that this range is a safety hazard and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Stainless steel, Maytag oven.

Our family was getting ready to make dinner. I was pre-heating our Maytag oven (there was nothing in it). It had been pre-heating for 7-10 minutes when our son walked into the kitchen as he smelled something. He noticed flames coming out of the vents that are located underneath the instrument panel of the stove. He yelled for us and my husband was able to pull the stove away from the wall within seconds of catching the wall behind it on fire. We cut the power to the house, but because the fire was inside the backing plate of the oven, we could not get to it without unscrewing the panel on the back. Nothing would be able to put the fire out without getting the plate off. However, the flames were coming out of the vents and areas around the back, they were beginning to get taller and closer to the ceiling. The backing plate was screwed into place and we needed to get tools in order to get it off. My husband sustained burns on his fingers from trying to get the plate off while flames filled the back. We got the plate off the back and put the fire out. The fire began in the motor of the convection fan, which was NOT in use. Our entire home was filled with smoke from the fire and the burning wires.

The product, in the report: Maytag Electric Range, with smooth top, white, 5 burners, 30”

I have a five year old Maytag electric range Model # MER8800FWI. This oven has a plastic vent piece on the top front portion of the door, to which the oven handle fastens. I had our dinner in the oven, and proceeded to attempt to open the door to change the rack position. When I did so, the plastic vent piece broke, and the entire handle assembly came off, allowing the outer glass front to tumble to the floor. Miraculously, the glass did not break, but had it shattered, the results could have been tragic. I find it difficult to understand why such a vital part, that is subjected to intense heat on a regular basis would be made of plastic, which becomes brittle from repeated heat.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Corp, Maytag Electric Range Model MER8700DS1, Serial # R62563138, 3 wire, 12.4 KW @ 120/240 Volts, stainless steel range, single oven, 4 stovetop heating elements. Purchased at Home Depot 6/11/16

Maytag Electric Range Model MER8700DS heating element catches fire, explodes and vaporizes the metal in the bottom of the oven resulting in a large hole. My wife and I had been cooking a turkey in the oven, at 325 degrees for about 3 hours when she came to get me and stated that she thought she saw flames coming from the bottom right side of the oven. I went to the oven and looked thru the glass window and did not see any flames. About 10 minutes later we were sitting in our living room with the rest of the family when we lost power in the house momentarily and all electronics reset themselves (our town loses power frequently and we were not concerned). About 5 minutes later, while still gathered in the living room, the power went out momentarily again and immediately turned back on. When the power came back on my wife heard a bang while I simultaneously heard a very loud, deep “humm” that lasted about 1 second or so which I assumed had come from the television speakers in the kitchen. Soon after this my wife went to check on our dinner and again informed me that she saw fire in the bottom of the oven. I went to the oven and looked thru the glass window. This time I did see blue colored flames rising up about 1” high and emanating from between the right-hand side of the oven and the floor of the oven cavity. I then examined the left-hand side of the oven and observed the same blue flames there at the bottom as well. I assumed at that moment that the heating element was burning out and it would need to replace it. I shut the oven off using the control panel and we removed the food. We continued to utilize the stove burners and the clock was still working at this time. The next day pulled the stove out from between our kitchen cabinets and unplugged it. I then opened the oven to remove the bottom pan of the oven that covers the heating element. As I reached inside the oven cavity I saw an oval shaped hole measuring approximately 1/2” x 3/4” located in the bottom rear of the cavity. I removed the screws holding the bottom of the oven to the frame, flipped it over and observed a tear drop shaped scorch mark along with “metal spatter balls” emanating like rays of sunshine from the scorch mark. This was all accompanied by a tan residue flowing out from the pointed end of the teardrop shape. It looked like a comet with a tail. From my years of working in a metal fabrication and welding shop I recognized this pattern. In my opinion, the hole in the metal had been welded and vaporized by an electric arc rather than melting due to overheating of the heating element. I next turned my attention to the heating element itself. The portion of the heating element below the hole in the pan was contorted and blown in half from the inside with charred, ragged, melted tares extending approximately 3” outward from the right hand-side of the fracture and 1” from the left-hand side of the fracture. I also observed that along almost the entire length of the heating element was severe pitting, charring and fusing of the heating element metal with the outer coating. I realized that I was very fortunate not to have been electrocuted when I touched the control panel to shut off the oven. Fortunately, no-one was injured at this time. The range is unplugged and I will be contacting Maytag to report this. I’m also hiring an electrician to examine my homes main electrical panel to determine if it needs to be repaired. At this point I don’t know the cause of the malfunction but it needs to be investigated and resolved before someone gets seriously injured.

The product, in the report: Maytag electric wall oven purchased in or about 2016.

The glass on the oven door shattered on my Maytag wall oven. The handle became loose on one end, and when we gently pulled on the handle to open the door to try to figure out how to replace the loose screw, the entire piece of internal glass on the oven door shattered.

Most importantly, because there is no model number anywhere on the oven, we were told by Maytag (the manufacturer) that we will not be able to replace the glass because we are unable to locate a model number.

The failure to apply a sturdy and durable model number to the oven is a huge oversight and misstep by the manufacturer. What a let down for the consumer. What is the result? That we must replace this oven. The consequences are that 1) an otherwise perfectly functioning oven will be added to our landfills and 2) we as a consumer need to spend money and time on getting a replacement oven. This is especially challenging during this economic crisis.

She immediately cancelled the operation to prevent a fire. Caller stated that the wiring harness on the side of the oven was charred. The company was contacted and they advised that a technician would be sent out. 10/17 The service technician came out and stated that the relay on the unit needed to be replaced but did not address the issue that a fire incident occurred.

Caller stated that if she was not present she feels that the unit would have started a house fire and should be recalled.

The product, in the report: Black double wall oven Maytag--model MEW6630DDB serial 19604109NJ.

I am writing about Maytag’s wall double oven model MEW6630DDB serial 19604109NJ. I have gone through the phone call chain at  1-800-344-1274 with my complaint and then wrote Whirlpool/Maytag .My story is as follows.  On Thursday morning September 19, 2019, less than 15 minutes after leaving my kitchen.I was in my bedroom, I hear what sounds like a crash and glass breaking. Upon searching for the cause of this noise I find my top oven door COMPLETELY shattered with glass all over my 10.6 x 28.6 kitchen. NO the oven was NOT on and had not been in several days. The majority of the glass was on the floor beneath the oven, but there was chards everywhere, including the breakfast area and the dining room. Pieces were in the cooktop to the left of oven- on the countertop and all in the pantry floor to the right of the oven, the door was closed. It took an hour and a half to clean up and for the next 5 days we swept and mopped every day for fear of glass still looming on the floor. September 25, a piece was even found in the living room 20 - 22 feet away that could have flown that far or have been tracked but it was on the couch. This is and was DANGEROUS !  I understand my oven is 11 years old BUT I don’t care how old it is this should NOT have happened !  I was informed by Maytag that this is called Spontaneous Glass Breakage.  I looked it up and it said it was an uncommon happening. I have 3 grandchildren under the age of 10 who are at my house a lot.  I keep imaging them here and walking in front of the oven as this happened !!  I have 2 small dogs who had been in the kitchen with me right before this happened.  I keep being thankful that I left the kitchen with my dogs right before the explosion (it sounds and looked like and WAS an explosion) I do not feel sending a service technician out here (free of charge) and being willing to negotiate the price of repairs--which is impossible to do--is all the responsibility Whirlpool (Maytag) has in this situation. We are finding glass everyday !!!!

This consumer is reporting his electric range he purchased November 14, 2016 and had no problems until sometime around June 21, 2017 when he entered the kitchen and saw that his right rear burner was on and bright red although no one had been in the kitchen before this time. He turned the range off. This incident repeated itself Saturday morning June 24, 2017. The caller contacted the manufacturer who said they were transferring him to Safety but then the call failed. This same thing occurred with a second call to the manufacturer. He then contacted the retailer who is sending a repair tech June 28, 2017. There are no injuries being reported.

As reported the stove top came on by itself. This happened because the brain of the computer shorts out from power surges. This happens often in the caller’s area. The tech that fixed by replacing the whole panel on the stove told caller this happens now and then. Maybe they should have some kind of safety device that would prevent this from happening. This could have burned down caller’s house. This is a scary incident! Can something be done so this will not happen again. Thanks, [REDACTED]

We own a Maytag Gemini oven and range combo. The model number is MER6872BAS. The serial number is 18487235CJ. Yesterday my 2 1/2 year old son stuck a spatula into a gap in the front underside of the range. The spatula touched the electrical contacts for the hot surface indicator light. Sparks flew, part of the spatula melted, and the breaker blew. Luckily the spatula had a plastic handle so he was not electrocuted. I’m not sure what the purpose of this hole is. I think this is a dangerous design and want to make sure that nobody else is hurt in the same way.

My oven door outer glass shattered unexpectedly.

The oven is located in the kitchen of our home and is used an estimated 2 times per week, under normal conditions. It was not in use at the time of the incident, and I’m not aware of any damage that may have occurred to the door prior to this incident. The oven hadn’t been used for approximately 2 days.

I was in the next room when I heard a loud pop and glass shattering. The outer glass had completely shattered onto the floor. As the glass lay on the floor, I heard it continuing to make a “pop” sound and the small pieces “jumped”.

My Maytag Gemini upper oven broiler coil caught on fire while toasting two soon to be grilled cheese with tomato sandwiches earlier today. Less than two minutes after getting the fire extinguished with baking soda, I walked away from the oven. A few seconds later, I heard the sound of breaking glass. As I turned around, I saw hundreds of glass shards and pieces on the kitchen floor from the top oven door. This was totally unexpected as the oven was already compromised.

This is for an electric oven inset into a wall. During cooking, when I opened the oven I was received a sustained electrical shock through the handle of the oven. There were no injuries as the shock was minor, but it continued. Upon measuring the door to ground, it was floating at 55VAC. This is with a properly grounded oven on a 3-wire electrical system for a pre-1996 home. The manufacturer sent out a repair tech who tugged on wires and said it was obviously a fault with the home. The oven has been in use for four years with no issues previous to this.

I took the ceramic roasting pan out of the oven and put it on the stovetop in order to check on the doneness of the food. I removed the lid, saw that it still needed more time and put the roast back in the oven. When I returned about 15 minutes later, the glass top had shattered in one spot and had several cracks extending the length and width of the stovetop. There were glass splinters all over the kitchen near the stove. This did NOT happen while I had the roast on the stovetop.

Maytag electric range was turning on by itself, we awoke to a smoke filled house. We had to unplug the range,we threw the breaker. I contacted Maytag, they made an appointment with Howie Voigt to look at the range. No service fee. A tech came to the house, knew right away what had to be replaced. He informed me that there would be NO charge at all. He returned several days later with the part installed it and left. A week and a half later I received a bill for $185.92. I contacted Howie Voigt and complained and was told the tech must have misunderstood the paper work when he told me there would be no charge. I was informed during this call the only thing covered by Maytag was the cost of labor. When I said again I was told there was not going to be any charge the person at Voigt’ said I had to take up the issue with Maytag. I called Maytag and was told the problem was with Howie Voigt and it was Howie Voihts mistake. I am unsure if I knew what the cost was going to be if l would have had the repair done or purchase a new range, but since I was told there would not be a charge the repair was made and now I have a bill for close to $200.00.

This morning we awoke to our fire alarm sounding. We jumped out of bed and upon entering the kitchen found our Maytag range smoking from the upper control panel. We quickly unplugged the range and the fire subsided. The range was not in use when this occurred.

After allowing the area to cool down, I pulled the back access panel and the control board was melted and was what had caught fire.

We purchased this range new from a local appliance dealer in October 2009. While it is 4 years old, this type of short circuit and fire should never happen to this type of appliance.

We are thankful that our alarm awoke us before this got out of hand. It is is of great concern that it did happen so we are reporting this to your company as well as the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Upon examining the potential to repair this Range, the cost of parts exceeds the cost of a new range as the control panel as well as much of the wiring harnesses will require replacement and our confidence in this range cannot be repaired. Pictures are available and can be sent if needed.

This certainly isn’t what we expected when we invested in our first Maytag purchase. Disappointing is all I can say at this point.

The oven was just turned off after using being used at 450 degrees, he was crawling around and used the oven drawer to hold onto to pull himself up. He was taken to emergency room at Lutheran Pediatrics where he was treated for 2nd degree burns.

She had never noticed that the drawer gets that hot. The oven drawer was never used while using the oven. 10/18/13 The manufacturer was contacted and she was advised that a technician would be sent out. A technician came out and advised that there was nothing to correct it, it was designed that way.

She feels that this oven is a safety hazard and should be reported. The product is not part of a recall.

UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: She would like a removable label to be affixed on the bottom drawer that indicates it becomes hot enough to burn when the oven is on and written in the owner’s manual under “Safety.”

The product, in the report: Maytag “Gemini Series” electric Oven/Stove (double oven with glass cooktop)-Model#MER6872BAS

I wanted to alert you to a possible FIRE HAZARD in an electric oven/stove that I own (Maytag Gemini series), and whose model number is MER6872BAS. Recently, the rocker-type switch on the right side of the control panel that allows the user to switch between a large and a small stove burner (manufacturer’s Part #74006467) became “frozen”/inoperable. Around that time it was noticed that an electrical burning smell was experienced but the source was never pinpointed. Upon further investigation, it was found that the switch apparently became very overheated and actually melted the interior components of the switch as well as the exterior housing. Is there any kind of a recall that has been issued for this part or this model oven/stove in general? Please advise. Thank you.

The product, in the report: Maytag Performa Electric Range Smoothtop

My husband and I purchased the Maytag Performa Electric Range with the Glass Cooktop and Self-Clean Oven for our new home which we moved into on Oct. 1, 2008. I hadn’t used my oven very much so it wasn’t very dirty but decided to try the self-cleaning oven anyhow around the middle of Dec., 2012. I read and followed the directions, but when I tried to move the locking lever to the right, it only went a little past halfway. So I called the number for the Maytag Stove, spoke to a woman there and was told that was correct and to verify that it was locked, I would see the word “lock” lit up by the clock. So I proceeded to turn it on. The next day I wiped out the small amount of residue and put the racks back in. Several days later when I opened my cabinet door next to the top side of the oven door, I noticed that the finish had been melted off my cabinet door. I checked the cabinet door on the other side of the oven door and found the same problem. I was shocked and upset, especially since my house is only 4 years old. I had the same kind of Maytag Range at my former house, the lock lever went all the way to the right and it did a beautiful cleaning job without any damage. I have since mentioned it to a couple of my neighbors and now they are afraid to “clean” their ovens and have noticed also that their oven door does not close tightly. I called the Maytag Stove number to let them know and they blamed it on the installer. When I called the company the stove was purchased from, they gave me the phone number for a service repair who charges for a house call plus so much for every 15 minutes additional. I feel something is wrong with the construction or insulation so therefore Maytag should be responsible for their stove and replacements of my cabinet doors.

This is in regards to my Maytag Range model #MER5555QAW, serial number 27877791LE. I had already had my oven preheating and was getting my muffin batter ready when I noticed there were flames under the floor of the oven on the right side. I could see fire through the holes/vents where the heat comes from the heating elements. I saw sparks and flames rising up into the oven. I opened the oven and the flames got worse. I then closed it and called my husband. I grabbed my son who was playing on the floor and backed away so my husband could look at the oven. He turned the oven off and kept the door shut until the flames died off. Now the oven element no longer works. The heating element is underneath the floor of the oven and never comes into contact with food. Our oven is clean and has no grease or anything that would have gotten into the vents to the heating element that caught fire. I usually just bake breads and things that never spill. There is no reason for a heating element in my oven to catch fire. Especially when the element is under the floor of the oven and does not come into contact with food drips like the older ovens used to.

I purchased a Maytag Electric Wall Oven Model# MEW5627DDW, Serial #11719305GE from Lowe’s in Toledo, Ohio on August 25th, 2005. On September 15th, 2010 the oven was on and the oven spontaneously switched to broil, burning and igniting the food in the oven. I contacted Maytag and was told the control panel had failed. They admitted no liability, but discounted the part and I had a new panel installed. Yesterday (1/13/2013), the same failure occurred. I will re-contact Maytag. I believe this problem represents a serious fire hazard, as a spontaneous change from “bake” to “broil” can obviously cause food to burn and ignite. If this has happened twice to me, I suspect it has happened to others. I would like your help in investigating this issue, and get the Company to respond appropriately. Many Thanks!

Glass front on oven door of Maytag Electric Smooth Top Range shatters and breaks without warning in middle of night. I own a Maytag Electric Smooth Top Range purchased in December 2009 from Nebraska Furniture Mart in Omaha, Nebraska. In the early morning hours of November 14, 2012, my wife went downstairs to our kitchen and to her shock found the outside glass window on the door of the Maytag oven had shattered and was strewn on the floor in front of the oven. The oven had been used at about 6:30 pm the night before and the incident occurred between 12:15 am and 3:30 am. I do not know how often this occurs but this is a major safety hazard. Can’t imagine if a small child would have been standing by this and it happened. Very dangerous. My wife is extremely shaken by this event and even hesitant about using the oven even after it will be fixed. Thanks for your efforts to address this incident.

I have a Maytag Percision Touch Control 700 Electronic Smoothtop Range that I purchased in 2005. The glass on the front of the door fell out as I opened the oven. It is held in place mostly by a spongy, double stick tape that failed on the range side. I put it back in, tightened all the screws, and it fell out again. I doesn’t stay in without the tape. I see this as a design flaw, using tape that fails under high temperature in a stove! I wasn’t injured, and the glass didn’t break, but I can see where people could be injured. The glass probably wouldn’t break, since it’s tempered and it only falls a little way. (and the fall is broken by your feet!)

On Thursday, September 20, 2012 I was at my mother’s home making cookies. A few minutes after I turned the oven on there was a white flash in the oven. I was standing in the kitchen with my eleven year old son. I reached over an immediately flipped off the oven. My son saw a huge flame inside the oven. My son didn’t tell me about the huge flame until after the whole experience was over. After I flipped off the oven I looked inside to see what had happen. The coil in the oven was still on fire. The flame had died down when I turned off the oven. I usually walk away from the oven while I’m waiting for the oven to warm up. I was so thankful that on this day that I was in the kitchen & able to flip the oven off right away. If I hadn’t of flipped off the oven when I did the whole kitchen would of been in flames in minutes. My concern is the builder used Maytag ovens in all the homes in this community. My mother’s home was built in 2006 but remained empty for several years until she purchased the home in March 2009 as a foreclosure. The oven handle had also broke off before this incident had happen. We were getting ready to have the handle repaired before the coil had caught on fire. I have never known an oven handle to break on an oven before. We are very concerned about this oven.

I purchased a Maytag electric double oven range Model MER6755AAB in October 2005. Yesterday we used the bottom oven: baking meat in a deep pan.

The oven was on for over an hour and working fine, then the bottom coil of the bottom oven actually started flaming by itself, and the flame curled around on the coil, and then went out.

There was no grease or food on the coil to burn. Nothing was dripping on to the coil. There was no food or grease on the bottom of the oven to catch fire. Had there been a shallow pan or anything near the coil, there would have been a big fire.

The fire went out by itself; we shut off the oven.

We restarted the oven, and the bottom coil would not heat up. There is rough corrosion on the coil where it was burning. The burnt area is not near the electrical connection.

I have ordered a replacement part, which has not yet arrived. We’re certainly not using the oven until the part has been replaced.

There were flames and sparks flying. We shut the oven off and called the fire department. They came and said the heating element was the cause. The range is not new but 2-3 years ago, Maytag ha da recall due to heating element issues. We filled out the necessary paperwork and the service company came and replaced the heating element. Should the element have failed in this manner which could be a real safety hazard? Thank you.

The product, in the report: Maytag electric range

There was a large blue flash that came from the back of the unit. This caused the oven to function eratically. When the rear panel was removed it was observed that the one wire connection for the broiler unit was installed too closely (off center) to the hole in the metal frame it passes through. A char in the metal along with burned insulation were noticed indicating that the wire had arced due to the improperly assemebled broiler connection. A rubber grommet protecting the edges of the metal or a rubber shield over the connection would be an extra measure of saftey in the event a part is carelesly installed as in this unit.

The product, in the report: Kitchen range with oven

Item: Maytag Range, model MER5721BAQ serial number 12690522ZU Oven overheats with severe fire potential. The relay that controls the AC power to the oven heating element short circuited permanently in the “ON” position providing power to the heating element that could not be turned off using the controls on the range. The contacts in the oven relay welded together in the ON position. The only way to stop the oven from getting hotter and hotter is to unplug the range or turn off the AC circuit breaker. Fortunately I was home at the time and discovered the overheating oven. Had I not been home, had not noticed the oven overheating, or if I had used the timer to activate the oven the results could have been disasterous.

Being an engineer by trade I examined the condition and discovered that a NAIS/Panasonic/Aeromat relay model JW2H-T-F-DC24V-Y8-H had malfunctioned, the contacts welded together permanently in the ON position, supplied uncontrolled power to the oven heating element. The relay is located in the oven clock electronics assembly. The relay directly controls the application of 240 VAC to the oven heating element.

Further examination of the oven electrical schematic reveals there is no overtemp fuse or other device to prevent thermal runaway once the relay fails.

This is a serious fire safety hazard deserving of expedited handling.

The product, in the report: Maytag electric 30” free-standing range, stainless steel

I have a Maytag YMER8875WS range that I purchased in June 2011. When I put my turkey in the oven on Christmas day, the rack fell down. The sides of the oven have expanded to the racks are no longer wide enough to fit securely. I suffered a burn on the inside of my left forearm and on the back of my right hand. The Maytag tech checked the range and agreed that the oven liner has bowed outwards. A new range has been ordered for me.

I the meantime, I have researched this online and discovered it is an extremely common problem, especially with Kenmore ranges. There is a huge potential risk of serious injury to people using these defective ranges, yet the manufacturer doesn’t seem to acknowledge the problem.

The product, in the report: Maytag Electric Single Door Wall Oven

The consumer stated that her electric wall oven is a potential safety hazard as the control element will not shut off when the consumer turns off the dial. The consumer stated that the unit caught fire last year. The oven was on for a few seconds before it caught fire and was set to bake at 275 degrees. The consumer stopped the fire by shutting off the circuit breaker. The consumer called the fire department and they arrived after the consumer was able douse the flames.

When the incident took place the oven read that it was at 500 degrees. The consumer has a single wall oven.

The consumer checked that her product is not on recall and found that other consumer’s have experiencing the same issues with this product. The consumer called the firm to fix the unit in 2001 and the solution never fixed the hazard with the range. The consumer has had the same issues with the range over the last 10 years and cannot count how many times these incident have occurred but would suggest maybe 20-30 times. Consumer’s aunt had same problem with the same product.

The consumer called the retailer, who is no longer in business for the last 10 years. Similar to the firm, their repair for the product was insufficient and never fixed the range. The consumer was told that the on/off switch was made too close together which results in the product not turning on or turning on spontaneously.

The product, in the report: Maytag Gemini Electric Double Oven Range with EvenAir True Convection, Model MET8885XS

Purchased Maytag electric range MET8885X directly from manufacturer, accepting delivery on 11/18/11. With first oven use, the stove tripped the breaker. Manual indicates to reset and retry, and second attempt also tripped the breaker. Following Maytag’s manual, we called an electrician to inspect electrical service. Electrician review on 11/21 indicates no issues with electric service (note that this purchase replaced an existing working electric oven, which never had any issues). He reset the breaker and the oven turned on without another trip. In subsequent days, however, oven safety quickly degraded. It started with spotty temperature control and both ovens heating up when only one was in use. Late in the afternoon of 11/27, we realized that even though all controls indicated the oven was off, the oven temperature was upwards of 300 degrees. The oven had not been used that day. The only way to shut off the oven was to unplug the range, or trip the breaker. Call to Maytag customer service on 11/28 resulted in a transfer to their Safety Department. [REDACTED] arranged for a technician to visit, and indicated that we should keep the breaker off and not use the range. She would ask a supervisor to respond to our request for reimbursement for the electrician visit. My husband took a half-day off from work to meet with the technician on 12/1. [REDACTED] from A&E Factory Service found a short in the lower baking element - the contacts had shorted to the back panel. He repaired all exposed wiring by insulating with electrical tape. his attempt to turn on the oven was not successful. he found that the computer controller was damaged – he removed it, and indicated one of the relays was rattling internally. He ordered new parts, and scheduled a return appointment for Monday 12/5 between 1-5 p.m. a supervisor in Maytag’s Safety Department [REDACTED], also called that day indicating it would take 21 days if we wanted to request a replacement range. He also offered us $100 “to make good” for the repair. On Saturday, 12/3, we received a call from A&E indicating they needed to reschedule the appointment from the 5th to the 12th due to a part delay. We indicated that was unsatisfactory, and inquired who we might speak with to expedite. She indicated to call Maytag. On Sunday, 12/4 we received a call indicating our appointment was scheduled for Monday. Calls to A&E on Monday confirmed they would be out between 1-5. Again, my husband needed to take off from work for a half-day to meet with the technician. By 4:00 p.m., the part was delivered by UPS, however, a call to A&E indicated they would not be able to make it on Monday. The “good news” is that they would come out on Tuesday. We declined and indicated we would follow up with Maytag. My husband left a message indicating the circumstances, and that we would like Maytag to pick up the appliance and refund the purchase price. His voice mail indicated he was out of the office for the day. By 12:30 on 12/6, we still did not hear from Maytag. Another call to [REDACTED] resulted in a voice mail indicating that he is again out of the office for the day. I called the main number for the Safety Dept. at Maytag, and the consultant indicated she could not authorize an appliance pick up and refund. I asked to speak with someone who could – she indicated that [REDACTED] would call back. No call was received from them by the end of the day. At 4 p.m. an A&E technician indicated he would be at our house within a half hour. I indicated that the appointment was for yesterday, and no one would be available to meet with him. Indicated we are working with Maytag to resolve this issue. At this point, we have concerns regarding the safety of this appliance, as well as Maytag’s customer service commitment. The purchase contract to provide a working, quality product has been breached, and would like Maytag to pick up the appliance and refund the full purchase price as soon as possible. We are now on our second week without a working stove.

The Oven control panel works intermittently, turns on/off by itself and some function buttons do not work at all. I contacted Maytag and told them about the problem, gave them my model number, MEW6527DDS, and serial number. They said it is not under warranty and to call a service company. I advised them that i had googled the problem and found many people who own this exact model experienced the same problems and that it is a defect that should be corrected. The rep said it was my problem not theirs because i was out of warranty. This oven was over $1200.00 and has not lasted 4 years. The control panel is $262.00 not including labor and Maytag is ignoring its consumers rather than accepting responsibility for the defective product. It is a fire hazard and since waking up at 2am with my oven on i have had to disconnect power to avoid an incident

The product, in the report: Electric range, white, 30” wide and freestanding. Four elements on the stove top and a regular oven.

While baking with my Maytag electric stove the lower heating element started on fire. It looked like a firecracker fuse while burning in the oven. We quickly removed the baking goods, and then turned off the oven and pulled it out from the wall and unplugged it from the power box. The lower element was still sparking and burning despite being unplugged from the power source. Then while it was still burning inside the oven we sprayed the element directly with a fire extinguisher. This did not put the fire out. Leaving the oven door closed after spraying with the fire extinguisher into the oven compartment we pulled the stove out side where after 5-8 minutes the burning element finally went out.

The product, in the report: Maytag Electric Smoothtop Double Oven Range Precision Touch 850 Series

Maytag Range - purchased in mid-2008 - has upper and lower ovens. Both ovens have turned on by itself at random time, thus creating a life-safety / fire hazzard. Called Maytag. They said they would send Flamingo Appliance out for an inspection and diagnosis, but I would have to pay for any part(s); further, they said it sounded like a control board issue. I asked what the approx. cost was and was told it would be about $212. I also asked about a warranty on that part and was told it was covered by a 1 yr warranty.

Flamingo Appliance showed up; told me the control board DID have to be replace. Said the cost was $262 + tax and that there was a THREE-MONTH warranty. Why would I pay almost 1/3 the TOTAL COST of the range with only a three-month warranty? This should never have happened on a 3-yr-old expensive appliance...

Again, this is a life-safety issue and there have been numerous documented issues or prior instances of this same exact thing occurring. These other episodes can be located on the internet. WHY HASN’T MAYTAG BEEN FORCED INTO A RECALL FOR THE LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION THEY HAVE CREATED?

It is unconscionable that they are aware of the fire hazzard their appliances are creating yet feel they are under no obligation to correct.

The product, in the report: It is a Maytag electric oven. The problem is the inside edge of the lower storage drawer is extremely sharp and has cut 3 people.

We bought a new home October 2010. The Maytag oven storage drawer has a very sharp edge where you reach into the lower drawer. Three members of the family have been cut on this edge. We reported it to Maytag, but it was not fixed.

We have looked at other new homes in our neighborhood, and the edge of the drawer now seems less sharp.

The model number is MES5752BAS16, the serial number is D01320827

The company did send someone out, and sent a replacement part. It was just as sharp as the first one. They denied the part was defective, and then we were contacted by their attorneys. We got tired of the phone calls and said forget everything.

WE do not think ours is the only drawer with a sharp edge, and someone may get seriously injured. The edge is sharp like a knife blade.
