The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Electric JennAir Wall Oven

I have a JennAir(Whirlpool) wall oven that is approximately 10 years old. The control board has failed twice sine I purchased it new. Most recently, my family and I awoke early in the morning to discover the oven had turned on broil during the night at some point and heated up, surprisingly it didn’t catch fire although it seemed to have been heating for a very long time and our kitchen was smoky. I turned off the breaker and allowed the oven to “reset”, upon powering it back on it was fine for a little while and then turned on broil again. I called JennAir customer service, they seemed concerned and told me to leave the breaker off to the appliance and that they would send sent out a technician at no charge to repair the oven, as they reviewed that I had multiple problems with the oven during the time I owned it. They sent out the local JennAir dealer who charged me $150 as soon as they showed up, before looking at the appliance. The technician said JennAir was paying for the labor to look at the oven but not the service charge. The technician confirmed the control board was faulty and the oven turned on by itself when he powered it up by turning on the breaker. Notes were made and he said he would send the findings to Jennair. He turned the breaker back off and left. I called Jennair and they said they never got the notes, I called the service provider and they forwarded the email they had sent to Jennair with all the service notes on the day of the inspection. I called Jennair a few days later and they said that the part was no longer available and my oven couldn’t be fixed They said they would give me a small discount on a new one, 25% off and they wouldn’t charge me tax, they wanted my credit card over the phone and said the unit would ship direct from Jennair. I declined and decided to report this situation. The oven that has been faulty since purchase and now endangering mine and my families life, the insulting and questionable practice of trying to get my card info over the phone and negate taxes for a new one just seems like it needs looking into, putting profit before consumer safety shouldn’t be okay.

The product, in the report: Double Wall Oven

(05/25/2026) The double oven caught on fire. The consumer’s wife had turned the oven on. About five minutes after placing food in the oven, she heard a crackling sound. Fire and smoke were coming from underneath the control board. She turned the oven off at the circuit breaker.

The consumer contacted the firm who sent a technician out.

The consumer stated that the control board had been replaced about two years ago.

The product, in the report: JennAir Oblivion Glass Series JEC4536KB

I have a JennAir Oblivion Glass Series JEC4536KB installed at my house for two years. I have notice that the burners were been left on by my children. This how ever was not the case. I was home alone and the power went out for 5 seconds. I walked out and the burners were on and the control panel was locked. There is no way to turn the burners on with control panel locked. This is for sure the unit turning itself on after a power outage. It has happened at least 4 times now. Onetime it caught a specula on fire and had we not been home would have caught the cabinets on fire burning the whole house down. I called JennAir support line and they told me they were not responsible for there unit after a power outage. I informed them is was just concerned that there product was a protentional fire hazard and they should at least come get the unit to do testing on it to see why this was happing. They informed me again not there issue because it happens after a power outage. No one at my household has been injured but I am removing this unit this week for my families own safety.

The product, in the report: Jenn-Air cooktop, model JED8430ADB

Electric cooktop sensors & switch malfunction causing the burners to heat to uncontrollably hot setting regardless of the switch setting (low to high). So hot, that the unit doesn’t shut off by itself, but relies on the home’s electric system to trip the breaker (my breaker was tripped on June 5th). Children & elderly are most susceptible as they won’t be able to react to a burning pan when they pour the olive oil like I did. Jenn-Air is aware and offered a 25% discount, but refused to consider a recall. The technician that Jenn-Air sent to investigate, named [REDACTED] with [REDACTED], was so familiar with this issue that he did not need to take anything apart or even look under the counter. He stated the sensor itself wasn’t malfunctioning, but it the switch’s response to the sensor was the malfunction where it “sticks” so that it doesn’t shut off the heat when it needs to. The heat isn’t supposed to be on for just a few seconds and then turns off until the sensor calls for more heat. It’s interesting how he knew right away like this happened so many times before. Jenn-Air’s safety department originally dispatched [REDACTED] to investigate for a safety issue, but since no recalls have been issued, this was not considered a known issue. I had the option to pay to repair it so that I can be safe again. I reported this outcome to Jenn-Air only to be told a 25% discount would be issued for my next purchase and that no recall will likely be considered. They didn’t express concern that the young or elderly could inadvertently cause a kitchen fire.

The product, in the report: Jenn-air cooktop JED3430WB

I called last week when I saw the whirlpool recall to report I have a Jenn-air cooktop we purchased on 1/14/2018 that has the front right plate turning on by itself. I gave the hotline the product number but they said it wasn’t included in the recall even though I am reporting the unit is malfunctioning like what I saw on tv. The unit started turning red when the dial was on the off position. This happened twice before we took the dial completely off thinking maybe the dial had build up and it wasn’t completely shutting off. And it still happened so we disconnected the unit and only connect it when we go to use it, which is inconvenient but due to concerns of safety we started doing this. I asked the hotline worker to document this in my report but I have not received any response from you so I am not sure she actually did. I did have some difficulty with communication due to language. The unit we own and I am reporting fire hazard issues with is JED3430WB. I have the original receipt purchased on 1/14/2018.

Please contact us at [REDACTED] or our phone at [REDACTED]. We registered the product also with your company when we bought it.

I am requesting you include our model in your recall.

The product, in the report: Jenn air electric stove

Submitter says that she placed a few items in the oven to bake. Caller smelled smoke and burning after a few 10”??-15’moments. Noticed that the boiler element was hot and could not turn the product off. Had to shut off the circuit breaker in order to turn off the boiler. Jenn Air informed caller that the stove would reset itself after a few minutes. Caller says that the product has not reset or turned on since the incident. See note.

Caller believes this product is a fire hazard.

Note: Jenn Air - sent local technician out. On arrival he stated when he saw the complaint that the broiler would not turn off he knew right away that the part to fix it was no longer available. When I asked how many he had been called for this problem he said “4” - he had worked for this repair company about two years.

My son found the part on the internet for about $85, however part was no longer being made.

My main concern is the home fire hazard. Often times I might have had a roast in oven for2-3 hours & may have gone to the store, or outside working in yard or shoveling. How long would it have taken to fill my house with smoke or cause other damage before I would be aware of it?

Has there been other home damages or potential for this to happen. Is it just this model or others?

Have people been injured because of this product/issue?

Should consumers be made aware of this potential hazard?

    Safety issue?

    Sincerely, [REDACTED] 6-27-19

JennAir Touch Control Radiant Cooktop - Model Number: JED4430GB00 Installed new in June 2018 by a JennAir certified installer.

Cooktop burners will go full hot for about 10 seconds when reducing the temperature setting. This causes the cooking pan (or any cooking item) on the cooktop to over heat for that amount of time. I have not had any fire incidents, however, I could see where this could cause problems.

I have contacted the manufacturer, but they claim that this overheating is not a defect.

The product, in the report: Jenn-Air Radiant Range with Convection Oven Model SCE30600

I have a Jenn-Air electric range with ceramic glass cooktop. While cooking, the range exploded sending glass all over the kitchen and dining room. I had my entire family including all grandchildren visiting our lakehome in northern Minnesota at the time and fortunately they had just left the area. Also, 30 seconds prior to the explosion I had been standing directly in front of the cooktop and most certainly would have been hit with multiple shards of glass. The potential for serious injury should be noted in their use and care manual but it is not found anywhere. I have cooked on it for 12 years and never had any difficulty in any way prior to this. I have a Jenn-Aire ceramic glass cooktop in our Twin Cities home as well and I am now concerned that the same thing could happen with that one. Jenn-Air’s only response is that they will send someone to “tell me what happened” and that I would be responsible for all parts and labor for repair. It is beyond repair and we plan to buy a new appliance so that is not the issue. The future potential for danger to myself and others who have ceramic glass cooktops is the issue and it should be a real concern to all but it is definitely not a concern to Jenn-Air.

I am writing about a product safety issue. I purchased a Jenn-Air electric cooktop (model JED8430ADB, serial # 12668376ZD) in 2007 and have been using it on a regular basis since then. About a week ago, when the unit was off, I heard a loud buzzing and saw smoke coming from the downdraft. The circuit breaker was tripped. When I tried turning the circuit breaker back on, flames shot out from under the control knobs of the cooktop. The unit is not functioning and must be replaced.

About one month later, on January 22, 2017, after preparing a dinner and having the oven on at 425 degrees, we were finishing dinner when we heard a strange, loud popping noise coming from the oven. Not daring to open the oven, I could see through the oven door that glass was shattering inside the oven. Over a period of several hours, the inner glass continued to shatter and fall to the bottom of the oven. The next day, my 11 month old Labrador Retriever was in the kitchen and discovered some small shards of glass on the floor beneath the oven. She ate a couple of small pieces before I could get to her and then vacuum up the remaining glass that had somehow come out of the oven on to the floor. I have not opened the oven door at all since we heard the initial popping sounds, so I am not sure how the glass escaped the oven. I estimate that there was about 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp of glass on the floor. I contacted Ferguson Enterprises, Inc. where I bought my range and they contacted Whirlpool, the manufacturer of the Jenn-Air Range. Whirlpool is refusing to replace my month-old range that I paid $3,413.25 for, but wants to send a repair company out to look at it and try to fix it rather than replace it. I think this is unacceptable and am very concerned about the safety of this oven!!! The repair company tells me that the glass piece that they believe is needed is on back order and they did not give me a time frame of when it would be available if I was to have it fixed. Please help!

The product, in the report: 30” Stainless Steel Downdraft Slide-In Electric Range

On 11/04/15 the consumer wanted to use her oven but noticed that some of the buttons were not working. The consumer states the oven went to rapid reheat and then to the broil setting with the temperature at 500 degrees. The consumer pressed the “cancel” button but the button did not work and the oven was still getting hot. The consumer states the “back” button worked and she was able to shut the oven off.

The consumer states a similar incident occurred about 2 years. After cleaning the stove top the consumer noticed the oven unexpectedly turned “on” and went to the broil setting. The consumer had to press the “cancel” button to shut off the oven but then a few minutes later the oven unexpectedly turned back “on”. The consumer states the scenario repeated for about 30 minutes.

On 11/04/15 the consumer contacted the firm (800-688-1100) and informed them of her safety concerns. When the consumer expressed her concerns about having a manual shut off on the range the Rep. (name unknown) advised her to disconnect the range by pulling out the range or cutting off the circuit breaker. The consumer believes this is a safety hazard because there should be an emergency shut off on the range. She is elderly and cannot pull out the range and go to another part of the home to shut off the circuit breaker. The Rep. offered for a service technician to go out to her home and informed her that a manager would call her today, 11/05/15 regarding her safety concerns with the range.

The consumer states the mother board was replaced sometime in 2010. The consumer states the technician who conducted the repairs informed her that the steam from the self cleaning mode got in the mother board. The consumer since then has not used the self cleaning mode. The repair was done under warranty.

The consumer could not obtain the serial number, she states the only way to obtain the serial number is to pull out the range and the consumer believes the firm should have the serial number easily accessible.

The consumer believes large electronic appliances should have a manual shut off button so in case of an emergency the consumer does not have to go shut off the circuit breaker or pull out the range, which can be more difficult for elderly consumers.

The consumer states the range was delivered sometime in February 2008.

We had an older Model Downdraft model range and it had relatively thick doors that were well insulated. We recently had to buy a newer model and the door is about 1/2 as thick and not well insulated. One of the instructions for the new range was to do an initial burn in at 400 degrees for an hour. The door got very hot and would have burned a child. (it almost burned me.) I think it is too bad that a company would sacrifice safety like this when older models did not have the same issue. The technology exist to better insulate oven doors. It seems like companies should use it and keep kitchens much safer.

Upon using the self-clean function on my Jenn-Air double wall oven for the first time (top oven only) the tempered glass on the inside of the oven shattered. Basically blew out all over the interior of the oven in thousands of tiny pieces. This happened about 15-20 minutes into the cycle. In researching online, I have seen several other people complain about similar incidents with using the self cleaning feature on their Jenn-Air oven.

The product, in the report: built-in Jenn-Air double oven

On March 31, 2014 the outer glass from the upper oven door on our Jenn Air Model JJW9630 double oven exploded with such a force that glass shards were found on top of counter tops over 8-feet away. Glass everywhere! The noise was very loud, like a car wreck. Fortunately my wife and I were out of the room at the time so no one was injured, but if anyone happened to be in the kitchen when it exploded, they would have been hit with a rain of glass shards, causing lacerations from head to toe. Although the oven is 15 years old, it was used very sparsely during the first 11 years as we lived full –time in another state. I contacted Whirlpool (Jenn-Air) and spoke to their Safety Department about the explosion. They just shrugged it off and said that this sometimes happens with tempered glass. SOMETIMES HAPPENS...I can understand broken or cracked glass, but not an explosion. I don’t buy that! I wonder how often has it happened? How many people have been hurt? Have there been any fatalities? I mean, this is a serious situation that needs to be addressed. I don’t care how old an appliance is, it shouldn’t explode...never! Cracked or broken glass I understand, but EXPLOSION goes a whole different route.

Now here’s the kicker...I have the original manual, and nowhere in it does it talk about the dangers of tempered glass or explosions. There is no mention whatsoever in the 2-page “Important Safety Instructions” section. In fact, the only safety-related reference to the oven door is a single sentence at the bottom of page 20, in the “Maintenance” section where it states, “Scratching, hitting, jarring or stressing the glass may weaken its structure causing an increased risk of breakage at a later date.” Nothing is again mentioned about the danger of explosions. I think this is clearly a situation that needs to be addressed. After talking with Jenn-Air’s Safety Department, they offered me a 15% discount on the purchase of a new oven…whoopee! I can get a better deal at any appliance sale. And they told me to make sure to unplug my oven in case there is a problem, so we can’t even use the “good” lower oven for cooking. They did send an independent service company to check it out but he just looked at it and wrote on his report that the “outer glass on upper door blew out”. What they didn’t do was to ask for the photos, which I told them I had, and take back the oven for inspection and testing to see if there were any defects.

The entire turkey pan started sliding out of the oven and almost landed on the floor. The problem is that when you pull out the oven rack part way, it is on an angle and the pan tries to slide forward, causing burns, etc. When cooking on a cookie sheet, the same thing happens. While cooking chicken nuggets I pulled the oven rack part way out to check for doneness and the whole pan slid forward and dumped the hot food all over the oven door. The oven rack is on an angle unless it is pulled out all the way. This is unsafe!

I checked the control knob to see if we had it in the right position, it was, but it was staying on. We then took the knob off to see if the stem that the knob slides onto was in the right position and it was. We tried turning it on and off a few times, but each time it stayed on. We did get it to go from high to a lower setting but never off, so we turned the breaker off to it. I will be calling the repair guy on Monday to fix it, but I though it should be reported because it could be very dangerous if somebody thought they had turned it off and walked away with a pan still on the burner.

The bottom oven heating element in our oven burned out. Before we were able to replace it, a wire from the back of the element worked loose and fell onto the metal back of the stove. Apparently, the wire then welded itself to the back of the stove unit, which I did not discover until my son told us of the frightening display of sparks and smoke which occurred when he turned on the oven last night. Sufficient damage was done that the control panel no longer works to control the unit, so it seems that we will have to replace the entire stove.

On 12/24/2011, the oven door fell off and the glass front shattered. It is a Jenn-Air micro/oven combo, model JMW8530DAW, purchased 11/2003. I have had four earlier service calls for defective hinges, as the door will not stay closed tightly. One door hinge came loose in 4/2011, but I caught the door before it could twist the other hinge and or cause the other hinge to let go. The oven door hinges have been an unacknowledged problem by Jenn-Air, now Maytag, or Whirlpool? as evidenced by numerous blogs. It has been a problem since the beginning and caused me to purchase extended warranties as I had a bad feeling about this unit. I feel that the money spent on the ext. warranties is far less than I would have paid for the numerous (other) service calls needed. But the reason for this report is the safety issue with the shattered glass. Luckily, no one was hurt. Jenn-Air (or current owner) should be held responsible to see that proper hinges and stronger, longer, receptacles are installed in these wall ovens.

The product, in the report: Jenn-Air Electric Wall Oven

New Jenn-Air wall oven installed in new construction home February 2011. Turned on oven in March 2011 to test. I noticed an odor when the oven was on, that smelled like plastic burning. I had read in the instruction manual that came with the oven, that the oven may have an odor for the first few times of use. The oven was not turned on again until June 14, 2011. While baking, after preheating, I noticed a smell coming from the oven that smelled like plastic burning. When I opened the oven door, a large cloud of smoke came out the oven door. The oven was on for only 17 minutes at 350 degrees. In the rear of the oven I noticed a yellow substance dripping down onto the oven liner floor. Once the oven cooled, I touched the yellow substance and found it was as hard as stone. The burning of this substance has caused a sticky film on the oven door that occurred when I opened the oven door and the smoke came out. This could be dangerous also as it could very well be residue from the yellow sticky substance and could be flammable.

Jenn-Air has not offered any resolution to this problem, except for the Jenn-Air Service Tech to clean it up. It cannot be cleaned as it is baked on the oven liner and has charred the porcelin oven interior. This substance has caused damage to the oven and is very toxic to smell. I am afraid if I use the oven again, this would cause a fire. The smell of the substance is overwhelming, and my smoke alarm went off, I had to open up my house to let the smoke out.

I feel this is a potentially dangerous situation and this product is unsafe. I did find another consumer, on-line at www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/jenn-air_wall_ovens.html that had the same problem, with no resolution from Jenn-Air.

The product, in the report: Jenn Air Electric Grill/Cooktop in stainless steel with downdraft ventilation

My electric cooktop has smoke coming out of the element receptacles and it caused the circuits to trip on my entire house panel. I had electricians come out to look at it and they said there is something seriously wrong and dangerous with the cooktop itself.

The product, in the report: We own a Jenn-Air cooktop that allows users to remove and replace different cooking “cartridges” (e.g., grill, griddle, radiant-heat burner), and the cartridge that caused the fire is Jenn-Air Designer Line Electric Grill Assembly (model JEA8000ADB), which includes the grill basin, the heating coil, and the grill grates. Note that Jenn-Air separately sells the grill grates by themselves as a standalone purchase (Excalibur® Finish Grill Grates, model AE915), but we bought the whole grilling cartridge mentioned above, which included the grill grates.

We recently bought a new Jenn-Air indoor grilling cartridge to insert into our existing Jenn-Air electric downdraft cooktop. We cooked chicken skewers on the new grill unit using a layer of aluminum foil beneath the raw meat, by placing this foil on top of the grill grates, as we had done with our former Jenn-Air indoor grilling unit to avoid flare-ups from dripping fat or marinade. This time, however, within ten or fifteen minutes, a fire had started inside the grilling cartridge. We saw flames coming out from the portion of the grill grates that was not covered with aluminum foil. (Again, this was an electric unit, not a gas unit, so there should have been no flames of any kind.) There was also smoke with a chemical odor.

When we turned off the grill and removed the chicken skewers and foil, we discovered that the fire had melted the metal grill grates. We later discovered that these new grill grates were not made of solid metal, but of a sculpted “Excalibur” nonstick material with aluminum rods inside for support. This Excalibur material appears to have physically melted off the aluminum bars, turning pale gray and ash-like, and slumping into the grill basin, onto the electric heating element. (Since the different parts of the grill have melted together, and due to the chemical odor, we have not tried to remove the cartridge from the cooktop for closer inspection. This is my best effort to describe what I have seen.) There is now a hole several inches wide in the center of the grill grates, where the bars used to be.

In trying to investigate this problem, which we reported to Jenn-Air on the same night it took place, I have discovered that the user manual for a similar Jenn-Air cooktop warns users not to use aluminum foil on the grill grates, apparently due to a fire risk. Yet there is no such warning in the user manual of the grill cartridge we bought and used. Furthermore, there is at least one report online by a customer who had an identical meltdown on his indoor Jenn-Air grill with Excalibur grill grates, and he did *not* use aluminum foil; he cooked steaks directly on the grill grates, and the steaks must have covered enough of the grilling surface to cause the rise in temperature, melting the grates.

The product, in the report: 2003 Jenn Air (Maytag/Whirlpool) Double Wall Oven. Model Number: JJW8230DDS Serial Number: 10370073CT

We have a Jenn Air (Maytag/Whirlpool) double wall oven. Through BBB, by its serial number, Jenn Air confirmed that it was a 2003 model

Model Number: JJW8230DDS Serial Number: 10370073CT

On April 24th, 2011 (Sunday), at 6PM the upper oven’s broiler was found having been turned on by itself when not in use. It had to be manually turned off by pressing Cancel. It was on again at the mid-night. It turned on several more times during the day of April 25th until its power was shut off from the house circuit breaker panel around 3PM.

Called Jenn Air customer service on April 25th. Jenn Air sent a service man to my home on April 28th. The service man offered to replace the oven’s control panel for $416.39, which we declined.

We were charged for $89 without any fixing, paid by personal check. The service report (#240322) has a single statement “Needs panel control, unit is turning on by self.”

The oven’s power has been cutoff since.

It could be much worse because my wife often uses the oven as a storage when it is not in use.

Please let us know if you need more detail information.

Consumer’s Desired Resolution: We need Jenn Air/Maytag/Whirlpool to answer following questions --

    1. The product has the seal of UL, why there is no Fail-Safe design in the product’s control panel which can turn to a fire hazard.

    2. Why Jenn Air Service did not do anything and left a fire hazard in my house?

    3. Should Jenn Air be allowed to use a potentially life threatening defective product as an opportunity to make more money?

    Thanks, [redacted]
