The product, in the report: Electric stove made by hot point/ GE 30-in 4 Burners 5-cu ft Freestanding Electric Range (Black)
I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding a defective stove I purchased just three months ago. The appliance has become a serious safety hazard in my home, and I am deeply concerned for the well-being of my family. While cooking recently, the stove caused a significant malfunction that resulted in a large hole being burned through the bottom of my metal pot. This was not only damaging to the cookware but also created a fire hazard, as the incident nearly caused an electrical fire. Additionally, my husband almost had a heart attack from the shock of watching the explosion on the stove. If he was any closer, he wouldve sustained serious injuries. Given that the stove is only three months old, I do not feel comfortable using it anymore. I have contacted the customer service department, where I spent over an hour explaining my situation and requesting a replacement. However, I was advised by a representative named [REDACTED] that the only option available is for GE to send a technician to attempt a repair. The soonest technician can come is in five days, which is far too long to wait, especially considering the potential dangers this appliance poses. I am also extremely concerned about the safety of my children, as I work outside the home and cannot be there to supervise them when they cook. I cannot in good conscience allow them to use a stove that is clearly unsafe. I must emphasize that this is a safety issue, and I am not willing to accept a repair attempt on a brand-new appliance. I respectfully request that you intervene in this matter and facilitate the immediate replacement of the stove. As an additional concern, I cannot afford to eat fast food daily while waiting for the stove to be replaced, which further complicates this situation. I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and look forward to your assistance in ensuring that my family can cook safely once again. Thank you

The product, in the report: HotPoint, White, Smooth Surface, Free Standing, Range
I own a lake cottage in Meredith, NH and have a HotPoint White Free Standing Electric Smoothtop Range/Oven. It was purchased in August of 2002, but as this is a second home it is rarely used and in excellent condition.
On Friday, 10/06/17, I turned on the range to cook something and there was no heat. I tested each burner and the oven. No heat. I knew it was getting power because the lights and clock were on. I did a google search and read that people experiencing a similar problem had experienced resolution by flipping the breaker switch on and off, so I tried this but it did not change anything. I read further and learned that while the lights and clock only require 120V the stove top & oven heat require 240V - so I decided to wait until the next morning and call an electrician.
On Saturday, 10/07/17, I had an electrician come to see if perhaps the outlet was not supplying the required 240V - but he found that was not the problem. I asked if he knew anything at all about repairing appliances and he said he could take a quick look to see if it was anything obvious. Upon removing the panel he immediately showed me what the problem was and I was shocked to hear him explain to me that I was very fortunate I had not experienced a fire. I have a photo of what he found that I am hoping I will be able to attach to this report somewhere. The appliance is now unplugged - I called HotPoint to report what the electrician had found and was given the number (800) 386-1215 and told to call Monday morning to report this.
Further internet searches have uncovered similar problems people had with HotPoint RB757 model ranges, but I couldn’t find anything with my model number RB787. I don’t know if it is because of it’s age? But it sounds to be the same problem people were having with RB757 being a fire hazard.
My appliance is RB787WCWW, the serial number is either DD241432R or DD241932R, one of the number is hard to read and could be a 4 or 9. I have a copy of the receipt dated 8/13/02. It was delivered and installed on 8/17/02.

The product, in the report: An electric oven/range with a ceramic cook top Model: JBS60DF1WW, Serial No:GD267454Q
Our GE oven door (the window) gets extremely hot during use. Our 1 year old touched it and was burned, which prompted our inquiry with the mfr. They told us the window is legally allowed to reach 172 degrees. This in itself is ridiculous. When you have children in the house you’re instructed to lower your water heater to 120 degrees to prevent scalding - why is something at a child’s face level in the most-used room in the house allowed to get 52 degrees hotter?! The GE customer service rep first told us not to leave children unattended while using the oven. Duh. Then she said we should have done more research before we bought the oven. Who in this day and age would think to ask whether their brand new oven door could cause burns?! After several days of back and forth with the mfr, we got frustrated and bought a laser temperature guage. It read 209 degrees on the door. Only after I emailed the customer service rep a photo of this did she offer to send out a service tech. The man - who was employed by GE - was extremely rude and condescending. I said that even 172 degrees was an unacceptable temperature. He pointed at one of the burners and said “Well how hot do you think THAT gets? Do you have a problem with that?” He told us he would have to leave his temp guage on the oven door for 20-30 minutes in order to allow the glass to heat all the way up. Lo and behold, his guage read 173 within 10 minutes, and he promptly pulled the probe off and ended the test early, saying that the oven was within specs and it was pointless for us to try and fight this. Livid, I emailed the customer service rep back and told her what had happened. All we wanted was to get this dangerous unit out of our house and away from our kids before more injuries happen! This has dragged on and on and on. I finally contacted the corporate office of where we purchased the oven (Menards). We are well past their return policy, and they don’t even carry GE appliances anymore. But they immediately apologized for our baby’s injury and are giving us a full store credit to use toward a new oven of our choice. GE should be ashamed. We were made to feel like bad parents for being angry about this. The threat is removed from our house, but I have to wonder how many dangerous units are out there.

The product, in the report: Freestanding Electric Range
The consumer stated that there is manufacturer’s defect with her oven and it presents a burn hazard.
She stated that looking at the oven, it seems like the door does not close properly. However, even when the door is closed properly, a person can stick their hand into the space between inside of the oven and the oven door.
The consumer contacted the manf in regards to this issue. They sent out a technician on 05/2015. The technician informed the consumer that the unit is working properly. He stated that the door is sealed properly. The technician informed the consumer that the oven is designed to be that way.
The consumer stated that her 15.5 months old daughter tripped near the oven. Her daughter grabbed onto the oven to maintain balance. The daughter’s hand went into the oven space and got burned. The consumer took her to a doctor and was notified that her daughter received first degree burns on the hand.

Hotpoint B317B6641P001 electric gas range with smooth surface. I turned off the burner; the light is out indicating the burner is off however, the burner continued to be on. The smoke alarm was triggered by the burnt pot. Thanks that we were in the house. It happened again about 3 times now; I turned it off but burner continued to burn; I am just taking the pot off the burner and turn the knob until it completely turned off. My concern is my teenage granddaughter will live with me. I have instructed her about it not turning off as expected however, danger is always there.

The product, in the report: GE Hotpoint Stove purchased in November 2009 through Home Depot. Model Number RGB530DEPWW serial no. TT139220R White metal with glass door
On Friday, July 5th, I was making bacon in my GE HOTPOINT Stove. I purchased this stove in November 2009 through Home Depot. Model Number RGB530DEPWW serial no. TT139220R About 10 minutes after I started the oven the glass door exploded spraying my whole kitchen counter tops, table top, floor and into the dining room and hallway with glass. My legs took a goodly amount of glass but gratefully there was only one deeper cut from the glass. Also gratefully nothing required stitches but took a bit of time to stop the bleeding as I am on blood thinners. The fact that I am also a diabetic was worry some due to the high incidence of infections. My doctor instructed me to clean the wounds and keep an eye on them. After doing so I contacted GE at 800-432-2737 which was found on the back of the book that came with the stove. They told me that they would send a service technician out on Monday it being the holiday week and all and that if the service technician found this to be a safety issue it would be covered by GE. They assigned me a case number of [REDACTED]. I found that statement rather uncalled for and amusing at the same time since I was almost killed by an oven door.
On Monday, the very unpleasant service man walked in the door, looked at the mounds of glass on the floor and said, “hmpf...”, then proceeded to sit down and write a ticket. He handed me a long white piece of paper that looked like a receipt from the grocery store and told me that it will be $540 to fix the stove. I remarked that the stove only cost $337.98 at the time of purchase.
Since the customer service representative was clear to tell me this professional would be able to tell me what happened and make a determination, I inquired as to what caused the stove door to blow up, He remarked, “I don’t know, never saw that but I have seen the inside of the door blow up”. When I inquired as to why GE was not covering the issue he remarked that it was not a safety issue. Now, call me crazy but when a glass door explodes and shoots shards of glass all over three rooms of the house and into my legs I think that is a safety issue?
The paper he gave me by the way only listed the parts to fix it which came to $209.50 and $11.40, so when I called GE to state my case after his visit, they told me that whatever the man says goes and they assume like I did that the labor was the difference between $540 and the estimate for the parts. NO ONE could give me a definitive response on the labor fees. I found this about as interesting as an exploding oven not a safety issue.
The customer rep did tell me that they would discount the repairs by half which would still be about the same price as the cost of the stove in the beginning and frankly... I do not think this is my responsibility.
I am sorry I purchased this stove to begin with. When in use whether it be the oven or the range top the whole stove becomes very hot as I can attest due to multiple burns learning the hard way. Gratefully I have no children with me on a regular basis because the stove is not safe in that regard as well.
My last conversation with the GE representative left me very frustrated and provoked me to contact facebook users to see if they have experienced this issue and further to look on the net for similar circumstances. I have found multiple incidents of this particular stove’s door blowing up on the net. How can the service professional tell me he never heard of it? I am hoping that someone other than a customer service rep gets an email that I today sent to eresponses@ge.com in their hands and has the courtesy to address this issue with me.
I really thought GE had more credibility and better products.
The more I think about this I do not even want them to fix the stove but in fact think since this is what appears to be a more common than not occurrence with this stove they should replace it with one that is not a danger to use. Several of the incidents I viewed on line were in exactly the same time frame as this stove.

The product, in the report: GE Hotpoint Electric Range Oven - With digital LED touch screen controller clock. Model # RB757BC2CT Serial # MD221263R
GE Hotpoint Electric Range Oven Model # RB757BC2CT caused an electrical fire in the controller clock that put out of commission the range, a hood exhaust fan and cabinets above the range. It scorched the cabinets and melted the plastic parts of the exhaust fan located approx two feet above the range oven. The flash fire was quickly put out and the breaker switch turned off. Since the range oven was dangerous and not working it was replaced with a new one and put into storage. The cabinets had to be refinished and the exhaust fan was replaced since it was cost prohibitive to repair. Now after 5+ years the range oven issue has resurfaced due to finding this safer products site [REDACTED]. It turns out after researching this site- similar [redacted] model numbers have been recalled. A recall alert on August 26, 2004 (Alert #04-576) was issued for approx 30 models manufactured under Hotpoint, General Electric, [and other] brands. When researching GE web site those models are referenced [REDACTED].

The product, in the report: Hotpoint Electric Stove Model #R B526 C3CC
I used to the oven to bake homemade pizzas. The temp was set at 425 degrees. Upon being on for 30 minutes the entire outside of the oven including the top, sides and front were too hot to touch. The only place it was safe to touch was the handle to open the oven. The oven being on heats up the entire level of the home and food takes 2x’s longer to cook. The ‘oven cycle’ light is on all the time.
I have tried baking items at lower temps (350 degrees) and the same thing happens. The entire outside of the oven gets dangerously hot to the touch. I have had to refrain from using it when young children are in the house due to fear of one of them accidentally touching the outside and sustaining an injury.

First aid Made Jul 22, 2012, sent to the company Aug 1, 2012, published by CPSC Aug 15, 2012
The product, in the report: White electric range with flat top burners. Range measures approxiamtely 30” wide and 39 inches high on the side to the flat top cooking space. The back where the controls are measure approximately 10” high. Stope has white knobs and a built in digital timer. It is self cleaning.
While our oven was preheating my husband heard a sizzling sound coming from within. He opened the oven to check on it and there was a blinding flash and smoke started to pour out. He quickly closed the door and shut off the oven. The stovetop and timer stopped working at that point. When the oven cooled and the smoke dissipated, I looked into the oven. It was covered with brown dust and there was a burn mark on the bottom. An approximately 4” piece of the bottom heating element had come off.

Oven baking element (bottom coil) inflamed, burning inch by inch along full coil length. Could only be extinguished by turning off electrical circuit. If not home when it happened, fire could have spread throughout kitchen and home. Nothing spilled on coil, appears to be faulty wiring in range similar to 2004 recall of same model. Hotpoint RG757B 31WH Ser #LZ2266174.

The product, in the report: Smoothtop Electric Range
The consumer says that she had not used the oven for about three days. She says she used one burner on medium. She heard an explosion a few minutes later. She says the front glass shattered and flew into two other rooms. She says the burner on for about 10 minutes before the incident. She says the burner had already been turned off before the explosion. She never had any issues with the unit prior to the incident.
Consumer added: We had no idea that the oven door was painted glass. It has been replaced with a painted glass panel with us paying 50% of costs. A am aware every day that this could happen again and in a home with small children, it could be a bad situation. Our little dog was covered with glass. I think the Consumer should be made aware of what could possibly happen (warning). I understand most self-cleaning ovens have glass doors, (panel) they should be metal.

Emergency room Made Aug 29, 2011, published by CPSC Sep 28, 2011
The product, in the report: Hot Point electric range oven
in kitchen, in the electric range/stove, while deep frying a dish, it started bursting and spilling with flames; in a hurry, took my hand above the dish and switched off the stove; in the process burnt my right hand from below shoulder to the wrist; even in the normal course, for operating the controls, we have to take the hand above the hot burner/dish on it; this is because, the controls are situated on the opposite farther side of the stove; this is too risky; to avoid the risk, the controls can be provided in front.
