The product, in the report: GE Spectra electric oven. Product model: JBP71COF1CC Model number- FD2443121Q
I was cooking fish sticks and french fries at 425 degrees F and I noticed my oven was very bright. I opened the door and the bottom heating element had a three inch flame on it. I dumped baking soda on it and sprayed a fire retardant and neither worked. The flame started to move and the element cracked. The flame moved along the heating element and I went to the basement and turned off the power to the stove. That ended the fire. I called the fire department to ensure that I had the fire out.

The product, in the report: White general electric spectra stove with induction stove top, Model Number j bp79w0b4ww, and serial number sa2 45293q
The stove failed internally emiting a smell of burned electronics. It was caught very soon before becoming fatal, The heat vitrified the surounding insulation and blackened the wires and wire couplings. Although the wires were blackened no exposed wire or indiction of a short could be seen. The stoves saftey autolock of the door was engaged and the led display flickered from on to off in a pattern until the plug was pulled. No outward damage from the chord or chassis of the stove could visibly be seen until the service hatch was opened revealing what was described. The stove was not in use at this time and had not been used for several days prior. The stove had always been used as intended and worked properly until this incident. There were no injuries as it was caught very soon due to the loud electrical noises and intense toxic smells emitting from the stove, Have we been asleep this could have been fatal.

The product, in the report: GE Spectra model# J BP64B0B2CT serial# HF2 32137Q black and cream color
I was cooking dinner on the stove top and it was time to preheat the oven. Less than 5 minutes after turning the oven on there was loud poping and crackling noises. I looked down and it looked like there was a welding spark inside. I sort of panicked and my husband tried to turn the oven off but the coil was still burning. After turning the breaker off it finisjed burning until it broke itself.

The product, in the report: GE Spectra Oven-Range (Electric)
I was baking french fries in our GE Spectra Oven (electric) and went to the living room for a minute. One of my kids noticed what appeared to be flames and sparks through the glass oven window. I ran back to the kitchen where smoke was pouring out of the oven and I turned it off and backed up. The flames and sparks stopped almost a minute after I turned it off, however smoke continued to fill the kitchen. We opened the windows and ventilated the house. After everything appeared calm in the oven and the smoke had cleared, I opened the oven to see what had happened. The top heating element (broil element?) was broken into pieces laying around the oven and on the fries I was cooking. Clearly this is a severe issue considering the flames, sparks, and smoke that filled my house and after visiting numerous other consumer websites, this is an issue that has been experience by hundreds of other consumers. WHEN IS THE RECALL? I am about to pay out of pocket to replace the oven because who knows when the bottom element will have the same issue? Or, if I replace the top element, when will it catch on fire again? And the next time, will I or someone else notice before the whole house is filled with smoke or food in the oven catches on fire and the fire potentially escapes the oven catching my house on fire, in either case threatening the lives of my family? Plus the smoke damages the house and reduces it’s resale value unless I pay to repair the damages. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT, PERSISTENT ISSUE, MORE THAN WORTHY OF A RECALL -- GE SHOULD EITHER PAY TO REPLACE THE HEATING ELEMENTS WITH SAFER COMPONENTS OR PAY FOR NEW OVENS. Apparently, they are aware of this issue and have done nothing at this time.

The product, in the report: GE Spectra white glass cooktop stove/oven slide freestanding unit
First incident involved the plug to the oven and occurred while the oven was in use at 350 degrees in March 2013. The plug “box” that came from the oven melted than began to burn the wall behind the oven. Luckily our breaker tripped and I was able to put the fire out with a small extinguisher. Needless to say, we ate out that night because our entire home smelled like an electrical fire. My husband replaced the plug box the next day. Second incident is still ongoing. The front large burner does not respond to any temperature control that you select. When I would turn the burner on “2” for example, the burner would come on high heat and not turn off until I turned the knob to “off”. Same goes for every other setting available for that burner. The burner will get so hot that it turns white and will remain hot for a good 5 minutes after shut off. The small burner directly behind it has begun doing the same thing since July 2014. I burnt many meals before I caught on that it wasn’t the cook, but the stove top. Scared to use it and has since tripped my entire house breaker twice in the past month. Burn marks are still on the wall behind the oven from first incident if pictures are requested.

The heating element in the bottom of the oven in our GE Spectra electric range spontaneously started to burn on Sunday 7/27/14. The oven was not on at the time although we were using the stove top. The fire continued to burn until it worked its way around the entire element, even after we pulled the oven out and unplugged it from the wall.

The product, in the report: GE Spectra self standing electric flat top range/oven black
I turned my oven on to 350 degrees to preheat oven. In less than 5 minutes, lower left coil in oven turned white, flaming and continued to burn towards back of oven along coil! Turned oven off, grabbed fire extinguisher and ran to turn off breaker. When breaker was turned off, fire slowed down and stopped. Smoke came out of vents on top of range. Smoke continued for a period of time.
Coil completely broke off about two inches from where coil first started on fire. Oven was completely clean when preheating. No burnt food, etc in oven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The product, in the report: free-standing electric stove
The consumer says the oven was pre heating for about 5 minutes. Suddenly the heating element inside the oven started a fire.
This happened on the bottom and top element. The light inside the oven also blew out. He put the fire out with a fire extinguisher and contacted the fire dept.
The Fire Dept noticed that the back wiring harness was completely blackened. The Fire Dept recommended not too try to repair the unit. He says the unit did not smoke and it ignited after sparking.
The consumer says that he has never had an issue prior to this incident.
He left a message for the manufacturer and also sent an email. There has been no response as of yet.

Emergency room Made Apr 30, 2012, sent to the company Jun 7, 2012, published by CPSC Jun 21, 2012
The product, in the report: GE Spectra Electric Range
April 8th, 2012 caller’s husband placed the oven at self cleaning around 3:15pm. Caller had taken their two children across the street to an Easter Egg Hunt.
When caller returned around 4:00 she and the girls remained outside for a short while until their relatives began arriving with their children. In all the commotion and in a very few moments the callers 14 month old daughter began screaming. The caller’s mother in law, brother & sister in law ran to the baby, saw that appeared that her hand was literally stuck to the oven of the stove.
When they arrived at the stove, they grabbed her, picked her up, tried to put water over her hand and then aloe thinking it wasn’t as serious as it appeared to be.
Within ten minutes the baby’s hand was covered with blisters.
Callers decided to take her to the Urgent Care Unit but they were turned away and referred to the hospital emergency room due to the severity of the burn.
The emergency room diagnosed the baby with first and second degree burns, submerged her hands into ice water for approximately thirty minutes.
Then put burn cream named in notes on her hand and wrapped her hand in gauze instructing that the wrap be changed a couple of times a day and followup with pediatrician in two days. Caller in the beginning was having to change the gauze about ten times a day due to the baby tearing them apart but now it has settled a bit.
Caller contacted for repair and tech came out Thursday, April12th, 2012 stated that self cleaning mode became excessively hot and to watch it because the manufacturer could turn it around on them. She asked him to leave and rescheduled for another tech.
April 16th, 2012 the second tech arrived, after asking the caller to turn the self cleaning mode on so that it would be running the same three hours it ran when the baby was burned. He tested the oven outer layer during the self cleaning mode with a thermometer at the area where the baby had placed her hand and said that the temperature was at 198 degrees.
The baby has been in extreme pain, the blisters began breaking open within a few days. At the follow up with the doctor on April 17th, 2012 the doctor cut the blisters off.
Caller is reporting this oven as a severe safety hazard due to the extent her daughter was burned.
She believes that this product or at least the door needs to be recalled.

I shut off the oven, but the fire was still moving along the coil, then I shut off the main circuit breaker to the stove. Fire finally stopped, but a portion of the coil broke off. The bottom

The product, in the report: White smooth top GE Spectra Stove/oven
I was using my stove top to make tea and when I turned the nob to turn the stove off and electrical zapping sounded and the stove began to heat up without turning off. Immediately began smelling an electrical burning smell and smoke started coming out of the back of the stove. I had to cut power to my house to get the stove to turn off so I could move it and unplug it. It is now unusable because when we tried to plug it back in it did the same thing. VERY dangerous fire hazzard.
