Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Dec 23, 2015, sent to the company Feb 10, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 25, 2016

The product, in the report: electric range

This caller is reporting her Kenmore Elite Electric Range purchased from Sears in Mississippi around 2004/2005 timeframe.

She had no problems with the range until about the end of October 2015.

The range had not been used at all due to the caller and her husband having been on a certain type of diet that didn’t require use of the range.

The caller had been sleeping and was awakened when she heard the oven alarm sounding, she went to the kitchen and saw a code was flashing (she doesn’t remember at this time which code) and she smelled the odor of the self cleaning cycle which was at the highest levels of heat.

She was unable to turn the oven off because it had not been turned on manually, she flipped the breaker off to cut any power to the range.

    No injuries are being reported.

The caller contacted the manufacturer around the same time, she doesn’t know to whom she spoke but the representative advised her that the code was one of notification of master board problem.

The caller’s husband has tried to obtain the part necessary to repair the range but he had been advised by the company that the part is obsolete and the range is no longer manufactured.

This caller is asking that this range become recalled with replacement of range as the remedy.

This caller is reporting her electric smooth top range that she purchased in 2003 from Sears in Hawaii. She placed a pot of stew on the left rear burner then set the temperature to the lowest simmer setting and left for a few moments.

She returned after leaving for only 6 or 7 minutes and the burner was at high and extremely red.

    She turned the burner off.

There are no injuries being reported.

The caller is asking for this model to be investigated and recalled with repair or reimbursement remedy. She has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 790 range Serial # VF93552112 Model # 790.974.72802, White, Electric, smooth top.

I have contacted Kenmore about a legal claim. We purchased a Kenmore Elite 790 range ($1700) less than 3 years ago, during self cleaning it fryed out the computer boards within the oven and power surged to our Air Conditioner and blew out the capacitor in our AC unit. We have 4 children and have spent hundreds of dollars feeding them without a stove for several days. We have been sleeping in a 90 degree house for several days. There are several cases of this issue that have not been dealt with by Kenmore. We had this confirmed by an appliance repair expert who repairs these all day. He stated that the range gets to over 600 degrees during self-clean and continually fries out the computer boards, that it’s a known issue.” Then why isn’t the CPSC doing anything about these manufacturers allowing the production of defective products? The pop sounded like a gun shot, it scared me and my children. There is no accountability from these companies.

Someone needs to call me to mitigate this issue. I found several cases of this stoves issues online and will be reporting this to the CPSC as well. I have contacted my homeowners insurance at Allstate and this will be a covered claim and they will subrogate against Kenmore, but I want a case opened and Kenmore to be held accountable. A $1700 range should last more than 2.5 years. It’s unprofessional & dangerous.

The product, in the report: Electric range w/four burners and one warmer

June 25th, 2013 the caller’s wife said that their electric range had an odd odor coming from it and then stopped working.

The caller turned the breakers off to turn the power off so that he could check components in the back of the electric range with cooktop.

He said the control board has two wires that go to the inside of the range for the heating element and broiler and that they are completely charred and showing evidence of a fire.

The plugs in that same area are melted onto the control board.

He contacted both the retailer and manufacturer June 27th, 2013, was informed that his unit is not recalled and that they could arrange for a repair at his/caller’s expense.

Caller stated that he has a small child and if his wife had not smelled an odor then they may have retired for the night and the outcome could have been so much worse than charred parts on a control board.

There are no injuries being reported. Caller is requesting that this model be recalled with free repair at manufacture expense as remedy and if he has paid for repair then he requests that he be reimburse at manufacture expense.
