No one hurt Made Sep 22, 2014, sent to the company Sep 30, 2014, published by CPSC Oct 15, 2014
The product, in the report: T-Fal Ultraglide Iron with Easycord, Blue Model# FV4476U2
I was using my T-Fal Ultraglide Iron with Easycord, Blue Model# FV4476U2 iron when flames and sparks started shooting out of it. Fortunately I had the iron plugged into a surge protector so I shut that off. There was an awful smell in the house afterwards.
The cord was not damaged or twisted, nor was there any crimped or exposed wiring. I’ve had the iron for approximately 1 year and up until this point there was no indication that there was anything wrong with the iron. The base where the cords is connected is black and the there is a black spot and a hole in the cord now. There is also a singed spot on the iron where the flames touched it.
I contacted the manufacturer and requested a refund. Our Quality Assurance Director at work suggested I report this to you.

The product, in the report: Ultra Glide Easy Cord Iron Ref: FV4379 u0/90-1810R 120V 1700W 50/60 Hz CMMF: 2820437910 Electronic Shutfoof Flat iron
The iron was turned off and setting on air provided cooling plate in order to cool down after ironing was completed.
It had been setting on the cooling plate for approximately five minutes when it burst into flames six to eight inches above the iron.
The caller and her helper who had been ironing ran to the iron and began blowing on it to get the flames to subside.
The flames appeared to be out, the caller unplugged the iron and carried it outside to the courtyard.
It is raining where the customer lives but the iron burst into flames again.
Customer and her helper threw water on the iron to be sure the fire was out then dumped it in a bucket of water to ensure that it would no longer catch fire.
They then opened the doors and windows, turned fans on to rid the house of smoke and odor.
Caller has not contacted the manufacturer and does not intend to contact them.
