The product, in the report: Rowenta Steam Iron: Model DW 1750; Made In Germany. No serial number
A clothes Iron, Rowenta Steam Iron (Model: DW 1750) exploded in my hand while ironing clothes; and an active flame shot out between soleplate and the top of the iron. Lucky no injuries; and nothing else caught on fire. I checked the outlet and there was no issue there; nor with the Surge Protector into which it was plugged. In fact, protector saved me, as I could turn it off right away. Iron took a good two hours to cool down. Have contacted manufacturer.

-What happened: At about 7:45 AM I was preparing to iron a shirt and get ready to leave for work. I stood the iron (Rowenta DW2459 steam iron) on the ironing board and plugged in it to warm it up. Approximately 2 minutes after plugging in the iron, it started smoking with a toxic burning plastic smelling smoke. The smoke immediately filled the closet where I was about to iron. I unplugged the iron and I ran to remove my 4 year old child from the bedroom that was also beginning to fill with smoke, and came back to get the iron and take it outside. It took me only about 10 seconds to return to the room and by that time the iron ignited in flames. I grabbed it by the handle, and ran outside to my back patio and set the iron down vertically. I used a water hose and sprayer to put out the fire. I used my cell phone to capture a few seconds of video while I was putting out the fire and then left the iron there to go tell my wife what happened. She was in a upstairs room with our child, she came into the the closet area with me and we saw that the ironing board was still smoldering and smoking. At that time I noticed that there was a puddle of molten metal about 3 to 4 inches in diameter, sitting on the ironing board and smoking. There were also a few drips of the metal on the floor. We used a water spray bottle to extinguish and cool the metal. I also to a few seconds of video of this and a couple of pictures. We left the room as we were having to hold our breath. I closed the bedroom door to contain the smoke. I returned with a garage fan and set it up in the bedroom window to exhausted the smoke. I also opened a smaller window near the closet to allow cross ventilation. Later, I collected the cooled pieces of metal that spilled from inside the iron. I have also saved the iron.

Our fire crews responded to a house in our district on the report of smoke filling the home. Upon arrival the crews found that a cloths iron had melted and started to smoke the ironing board cloth filling the home. Although the iron did not catch fire , it appears to have failed the internal safety devices.

The product, in the report: Rowenta iron, model DW 5080 made in Germany 4611. It has an auto shut off feature.
I was sewing and occasionally using my Rowenta Iron model DW 5080 made in Germany 4611 when I noticed sparks, then smoke, then flames coming out of my iron below the sole plate at the rear of the iron. I picked it up immediately, unplugged it and ran it under water to put out the fire. Thankfully, I was there to act immediately or my house would be toast.
I have notified Rowenta, and they want the product back and are sending me the shipping label.

The product, in the report: Rowenta Powerglide 2 Vertical Steam Iron
Rowenta Powerglide 2 Steam Iron. I’ve had this product for about 4 years. I had plugged it in and was in the process of ironing some clothes. I had only been using it for about 5 minutes. I rested it on the ironing board and all of a sudden sparks started coming out at the base of the iron by the wire and in less than 10 seconds, it burst into sizeable flames at that part of the iron. The flames took seconds to burn a hole in the ironing board cover. I immediately unplugged the iron and took it off the ironing board. The flames died down once I unplugged the iron. It was a frightening experience and frightening to think that if I’d left the ironing board for a few minutes when that happened I would have had a serious fire in my house.

The product, in the report: Rowenta clothing iron, model DZ-1700
We (Madison Fire Dept) responded to the above location for a fire alarm activation. Upon arrival we were met by a maid on site who stated she was using a clothing iron that malfunctioned and began to burn up. The iron was briefly left on the ironing board and it singed the fabric on the ironing board leaving a very light smoke condition on the second story. The windows were opened before we arrived which vented any smoke that was home.
My concern is that the iron failed during “normal” operation and did not appear to be used inappropriately or against recommended practice. If left unattended, this could have resulted in a devastating fire.

The product, in the report: Rowenta powerglide INOX steam iron
When finished ironing my wife set the iron up vertically assuming the automatic shut-off feature of the iron would self-activate. Not long after leaving the room she heard the smoke alarm in the adjacent hallway go off. Returning to the room in which the iron was sitting on the ironing board she found the cover to the ironing board afire with flames shooting up about one foot. She extinguished the fire with water and unplugged the iron.

Hurt, no treatment Made Dec 29, 2017, sent to the company Mar 16, 2018, published by CPSC Apr 2, 2018
The product, in the report: Rowenta DW4060 Electric Iron. Stainless steel plate, white and blue plastic housing with white AC power cord.
Rowenta Clothes Iron Model DW4060120V 50-60Hz 1700W This is an approximately a 2 year old clothes iron used daily. On the 22nd of December 2017 it was used as usual in the morning by turning the selector knob all the way to the right on high steam setting for cotton/linen. The large dial was turn off (all the way to the left) as usual and I went about the day’s business. About 12 hours later at bedtime and while laying in bed with the lights off, I have a small air fan blowing to circulate air. I noticed by sound an intermittent drop in speed sound on the little fan I was using. Knowing that there is something in the bedroom’s circuit drawing intermittent current that would cause the low fan speed to drop, my first impression was the Rowenta Iron. Knowing that this model iron has an 3 way automatic shut off I didn’t at first think this is what was where the intermittent power was coming from and besides the indicator light was off on the Rowenta iron.
I looked at everything that was plugged into the bedroom AC outlets and the only thing causing the intermittent power consumption was the Rowenta Iron but again it had an automatic shut off and I though this could not be it.
I approached the iron, the indicator light was off but the iron was EXTREMELY HOT not only at the metal plate but the housing was almost too hot to touch as it caused some minor 1st degree burns to my right hand fingers. The first thing I checked was the large dial and it was in the off position. In the past, regardless of where the large dial was, this iron would always shut off automatically in about 8-10 min if not in use in an upright position as a safety measure. Apparently this Rowenta model that was turned off in the morning via the large dial never shut off and the back up automatic shut off (shuts off automatically when no motion is detected over time) never engaged and “I would assume” this iron has a temperature sensor as a third safety backup that never engaged. There is no doubt in my mind that this iron could of caused a fire as it was extremely over heated and sitting on a ironing board with a cloth cover.
The only thing I could think of that would by-pass all these safety features is that there was a power outage the same day where three individual power surges in rapid succession occurred in a 30 second period.

To Whom It May Concern:
Please find enclosed, for your careful consideration and inspection, one Rowenta iron model# DZ5080, Ser# 0908. As you can see, by the enclosed photo’s, my wife suffered burns because of your defective product. The burns, although painful, were treated at home. Rather than running to the nearest law firm, I tried unsuccessfully to reach you via the internet and only recently found a phone number finally reaching you folks. Our primary concern lies as follows: We are both retired and have no children living with us. Consider a younger women and a small child, standing or crawling near the ironing board. When your iron shorted out, the iron went flying and with a child near by, the outcome could have been catastrophic. I have my opinion and belief on why this problem happened. The opinion comes from many years of buying and using wire products. We appreciate you taking the initiative to inspect this iron and what you decide is up to you. I can assure you, after buying and using several Rowenta Irons, my wife does not abuse your product. She uses only distilled water and currently is using a Rowenta Promaster.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Best regards, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Steam Iron Rowenta Pro Iron Steam Station Model DG5030
My wife was ironing a shirt and smelled something burning. There was no smoke coming from anywhere so she thought it might just be the ironing plate. But when she finished ironing and lifted the unit from the ironing board she noticed that the case had melted onto the ironing board cover. I then looked at the underside of the unit and saw that the electrical wiring had burned/melted through the reservoir’s housing. Fortunately there was no fire nor was anyone hurt in anyway.
As and FYI the appliance is a Rowneta Pro Iron Steam Station, Model DG5030 which I purchased from Amazon.com July 2015.

I ironed for 5 minutes then left the iron turned on in the upright position on the ironing board. It was not touching any object. Fifteen minutes later something inside the iron began to burn and emitted a strong smelling white smoke. I unplugged the iron and it continued to burn for 15-30 minutes. No flames were visible on the exterior. The plastic around the metal base of the iron melted on both sides.

Not the plug that goes into the wall but the actual base of the iron started to spark and a half second later the iron burst into flames. This is extremely dangerous as it could have burned down my house.

I was picking up the iron to wrap the cord and burned my hand. I asked my wife - and she hadn’t used the iron for many days.

While ironing the iron began to spark and smoke and began to ignite, myy wife imediately pulled the plug. After pulling the rear cover off I found that the Main power wiring was burnt through and shorted to ground. My wife called Rowenta to inform them that this product has the potential to catch fire. Rowenta representative said that she would email a shipping label and they would like the unit sent to them for evaluation. When asked if it was going to be replaced they said no. We will not ship the iron back to them as I feel they are trying to cover up a safety fault that is potentially dangerous. I feel these units shoulld be recalled. I did notice on reviews that many people have had issues with the Rowenta irons short circuiting. Had my wife left the iron unattended on the ironing board even for a short period of time there would have been a fire. I have photos of the burnt wiring.

The product, in the report: Rowena Steam Iron Model D 1050
Rowena Effective Iron Model DW 1050 Purchased in June 2014 at Target
This is a Rowena steam iron and you must put water in the iron for it to steam. The problem is the iron does not have a mechanism or a door to open to put the water into the iron. You pour water into the iron through a hole in the top of the iron and quite often when you are ironing the hot water splashes out and covers your hand with hot water. This shock of the hot water hitting your hand could cause other problems with the hot iron. I called Rowena’s customer service department to see if other people had experienced the same problem and was treated most rudely. They asked if I was a fast ironer and a rough ironer; which I am not. I assume if I were they would say the problem was with the way I iron and not with the poorly designed iron. I was treated so rudely I discontinued the call by asking that a manager call me when he/she got back into the office. I received a call this morning from the manager and again was treated most rudely. The problem was they just did not care that I had burned my hand with the hot water, basically they said screw you and move on. I really think the iron is poorly designed; both I and my spouse have burned our hands with the iron as I am confident others have done the same. P lease have someone investigate this situation and let me know if it is a design problem or the way I iron. By the way I am over 70 years old and have been ironing since I was about 8 years old; this is the first time this has ever happened to me.
Thanks,

Iron was in upright position, on ironing board, plugged in after brief use, and set on medium. I walked away for about 5 minutes into the next room. Then I smelled smoke and detector went off. I found the iron on fire, with heavy smoke pouring out of both sides of the iron. I was able to unplug it, grab it by the cord, and put in under the tub faucet to put the fire out.
It smoked and spewed noxious fumes for at least two more minutes. Filled most of upstairs of house with smoke.
If I hadn’t walked back in, it would have caught the bedroom on fire.

I was ironing for about an hour when I started to smell burnt plastic. I look all over the iron and could find nothing. Finally when I tried to move the irons steam base I found that the base unit was stuck to the carpet it was laying on. I unplugged it and forced it off. It tore a piece of the carpet off. Turns out the steam in the base melted a hole through the bottom and melted the plastic which melted my carpet. If I would have left the iron on longer it probably would have started a fire. I am so upset my carpet was very unique and expensive. I was doing the same thing I always do. This is obviously a faulty product that needs redesigning. The iron was less than 1 year old.!.

Finished ironing a shirt and placed the iron in the upright position. Shortly after a popping sound was made, and flames were exposed near the base and cord. The iron was quickly unplugged, which stopped the fire. Smoke came out from the iron with a burnt plastic smell. Luckily the fire did not spread to the ironing board cover. Iron has been used weekly for about 3 years. Looks like quite a few similar issues have been raised.

The product, in the report: Rowenta clothes iron model DM 890, serial number 4106, labeled as Rowenta Professional - Commercial 1750 W iron. Iron has white plastic body with blue molded-in rubber grip in handle.
Purchased Rowenta clothes iron model DM 890, serial number 4106 approximately 5-7 years ago. Iron is equipped with a plastic ball-and-socket type swivel strain relief for the electrical cord. Iron started operating intermittently over the past year and eventually stopped working completely. We purchased a new iron. In my investigation of why the old iron stopped working, I removed the bottom plate where the cord enters the iron and saw that the inboard edge of the ball-and-socket strain relief had rubbed against the insulated electrical cord where the cord exits the ball-and-socket in the interior of the iron. The exterior sheathing of the cord was worn completely through and continued to rub through one of the conductors, eventually severing the wire completely. Although I believe the risk of electrical shock was minimal due to the plastic construction, the risk of fire was high, particularly as the copper conductors were severed (1750W iron), of if more than one conductor had worn at the same time. We reported this to the company who seemed disinterested in the problem.

The product, in the report: Rowenta Professional Inox Iron 5002 Model DE-811 Serie A 120 V 1400W A.C. only Made in Germany no serial number indicated on the iron.
I was ironing with a Rowenta Professional Iron Model DE-811 Serie A. I looked on the iron - I could not find any sort of other serial number or identifying number beyond this.
I also do not know where/when it was originally purchased. I was ironing as normal. I smelled a burning smell. A few seconds later, sparks began to fly from the base of the iron - where the cord connects to the iron. The sparks turned to a small flame and began to burn the ironing board cover. I quickly blew out the flames and then ran to the wall to unplug the iron.
This all happened in a matter of seconds. I shudder to think what would have happened had I left the room to hang up clothes or do something else. It wouldn’t have taken very long for the flames to have grown larger and could have easily begun to burn the room and perhaps the entire house down. Really, this could have been catastrophic. It wasn’t like I had left the iron on and went to do other errands or chores. I was standing there ironing and this happened. Lucky thing.
I happened to mention this to my aunt who also has owned Rowenta irons. She could not remember the model, but she also experienced the same thing. She was ironing and the iron sparked and caught fire. She quickly unplugged the iron and threw it away. She said it happened in the exact same way - the base of the iron where the cord connects to the iron - began to spark and burn.
I have never filed such a report but this is a problem. I worry for others who might have Rowenta irons. This is very very dangerous. I unfortunately do not have documentation for this iron. It belonged to my mother. She would have bought it from a retail store - but I’m not sure which store or when.

The product, in the report: Rowenta Clothing Iron
Text of consumer’s letter dated April 15, 2013 to Rowenta USA, with cc to Pennsylvania Bureau of Consumer Protection and Chairman, President and CEO, Kohl’s:
I purchased a Rowenta iron at Kohl’s Department Store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 28, 2012 (copy of receipt enclosed). When I was ironing recently, the iron cord shorted at the base of the iron and the electric spark from the iron hit me at the back of my right forearm. This caused a severe burn on my arm (picture of burn and iron enclosed). I immediately disconnected the iron. Then I washed the burn and rinsed it with cold water. The burn continued to sting and itch for several weeks and at times it would start bleeding again. However, this could have been a much more serious injury. I was very fortunate that the electric spark did not hit me in the face or eye; this could have been a very serious tragedy.
On March 23rd, I returned the iron to Kohl’s for a full refund (copy of return receipt enclosed). I explained the above to the Kohl’s customer service representative, but she made no comment. In the meantime, I’ve treated the burn daily with an antiseptic liquid until this morning when the scab finally fell off.
I am writing this letter to alert you because obviously this should never have happened. It’s obvious that the cord was defective and there is a serious problem with your company’s quality control procedures. Otherwise, this iron would not have passed inspection or been sold to an unsuspecting customer. I’ve bought irons from other companies, i.e., [REDACTED] and [REDACTED], but this never happened with these brands.
I started buying Rowenta irons several years ago after I saw one demonstrated on QVC. I continued to buy them because they produce more steam than other brands and they have vertical steam and burst of steam. For the past several years I’ve been buying the Rowenta brand at Kohl’s; however, it’s been my experience that the irons don’t even last for a year. Usually, the way I can tell it’s time to get a new one is when the iron starts leaking brown water from the vents. This is the first time I’ve had one that had an electric spark. This is very dangerous!
You need to look into this matter immediately. You need to ensure that Rowenta is producing safe products. This could happen again and the next time, the outcome could be tragic! maybe these irons need to be taken off the market until this problem is resolved. Please let me know what you decide. Thank you. I can be reached at [REDACTED].
I am also sending a copy of this letter plus enclosures to the Consumer Protection Agency. I don’t want this--or something worse--to happen to anyone else!
P.S. I called your customer service number (1-800-769-3682) on April 15, 2013 at approximately 11:30 a.m. eastern standard time. I spoke with [REDACTED] and explained the above problem to him. I also asked him to provide me with the name and address of the President of Rowenta so that I could send this letter to him/her. (l could not locate this information on the Internet.) [REDACTED] advised me that he did not have this information. He told me that he would pass the message to you and that you would call me back within 24-48 hours, i.e., April 16-17th. It is now April 21st. You never called back. I can only assume, therefore, that you do not care about the safety of the Rowenta irons. Also, I can only assume that you are not going to provide me with the name and address of your President and, therefore, do not want your President to be made aware of this problem. My only hope is that the Consumer Protection Agency will investigate this matter thoroughly so that no other customer is injured.

I have a Rowenta Professional steam iron and yesterday while I was waiting for iron to heat up, it popped and the cord caught fire at the base of the iron. flames were 3 inches high, I unplugged iron from wall and it reduced the flame to one inch high and I blew it out.
This morning I plugged in another Rowenta I had, couldn’t remember what was wrong with it, and plugged it in. Never got hot enough to use it, light would come on and off. I moved the cord and held it in place over the top of the iron and light stayed on. I unplug ed cord and check it out and it was ready to short circuit also.
after reading reviews on the Rowenta won’t buy another one, can’t afford to replace this house if iron caught fire and say I was out in the yard, or running errands. got any suggestions on what’s the best steam iron on the market now ?

The flames were at least 12 inches long, she immediately unplugged it and used a shirt to smother the fire.
The caller noticed that the incident left a burning odor in the room, she then place the iron outside. This was the first incident.
9/2012 The manufacturer was contacted the following day and she was advised to return the product so that they could make an evaluation. They told her this would take about 4-6 weeks to make a determination of what caused the incident.
The caller is concerned that this iron is a fire hazard and should be reported.

Product: Rowenta DX-8800 Clothes Iron.
Iron cought fire at power cord entry point. Smoke and flames burning cord’s protective gromet. There was no stress on cord - iron just sitting there plugged in. Cursory (non tear-down) inspection of Iron and Cord show them to be in good condition. Flames would have spread to home if someone not there monitoring. I am a USAF safety officer / incident investigator.

Attention: Customer Service
I am returning a Rowenta Actisteam DZ2060/1700W iron I purchased 2 years ago. I was satisfied with the iron’s performance until recently when the electrical cord burned at the base of the handle. Seconds after I turned on the iron I watched as the cord began to smell, smoke, sizzle, and finally severed the cord insulation. I immediately pulled the iron’s power cord from the wall outlet.
I was outraged at the lack of safety. I was outraged because my girlfriend little and I could have been severely injured and I was outraged by the fact that I’ve purchased large orders of Rowenta irons for a small boutique hotel in the Bay Area and have recommended your irons to friends and family. To clear my conscious, I’ve ordered the replacement of Rowenta irons with a less expensive and more dependable brand iron and have warned friends and business associates against purchasing your products.
Along with this letter I’ve returned the product to you to keep, analyze, and develop a more safe operational iron. After your findings, I’m requesting a written response letter clarifying the reason behind the defective performance of the Actisteam iron, and explain what your plans are to improve the quality and safety of the Rowenta Actisteam DZ2060/1700W iron.
Disappointed Customer,

Was just ironing when I smelled something funny and after looking around could not figure out why I smelled burning plastic. I returned to the ironing board to see small sparks shooting out of the cord of my Rowenta Professional steam iron. model DM 890. Ironic, this place in the cord that ignited while not even being touched was underneath a double-thick protective sleeve designed to protect the cord and keep it away from the iron- in this case it appears it only hid the problem until it was a near-disaster.

Rowenta model DE-851 Large sparks, small flame came out the back at the cord. The rubberized cord protector is partially torn, and after further investigating plastic is melted and chard. Burnt my ironing board cover (dime size). I unplugged the unit and look to see if it had been recalled, I did not see a recall but noticed several similar incidences. Like my iron but seeing it could have caused a fire make me think this product needed to be recalled.

The product, in the report: Rowenta Powerglide 2 INOX vertical steam iron Model DM253
We bouhgt a Rowenta Iron about 4 years ago. 2 years ago we called them because the cord had worn and sparks were coming from it. They told us not to use the iron until we replaced the cord. Now 2 years later the cord is making sparks. We called Rowenta again. THey sais that they didn’t have any other complaints about this. I know there was at least one complaint because we complained 2 years ago. The covering of the cord is getting worn where it is attached to the iron - in fact it has a small hole in it.

The product, in the report: Rowenta Iron Model DZ1500
My Rowenta iron sparked. My daughter unplugged the iron and left the room. Within minutes the iron caught fire. The fire was at the base of the iron where the plug attaches. I contacted Rowenta and sent the iron in to be inspected. They said it was inconclusive but offered me a new iron provided I sign a release form. After searching the internet I found many other people experienced the same thing with their Rowenta iron and the company either claimed it was normal wear and tear or inconclusive. Fortunately, I had no casualties but my iron and board but it could easily have been very bad had I not seen the fire through my closet window. I feel there is a design flaw or something that is causing all the irons to burst into flames. Here is a site that list tons of people who experienced the same issue http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/rowenta.html. Thanks!

The product, in the report: Rowenta DX 9300 clothing iron
While ironing the morning of June 22, 2011, the cord of my Rowenta iron caught fire. I heard a pop (the sound of a flame starting) and then saw the flame coming from the cord at the junction of the cord and the plug. I quickly pulled the cord from the outlet using the other end of the cord. Thankfully no one was hurt. I’d hate to think of what would have happened had I stepped away for a minute to get more clothes to iron. The flame quickly grew in the less than 5 seconds it took me to respond. If I hadn’t been so close my whole kitchen would have been ablaze.
