  1. No one hurt

Made Nov 12, 2025, sent to the company Jan 12, 2026, published by CPSC Jan 29, 2026

The product, in the report: Viking double door stainless fridge 42 inches with ice maker in door VCSB5422DSS model 051514R10025640 serial

Its an unfortunate and frightening incident that has led to my writing you this letter. I own a Viking fridge. I have loved the fridge and this is the second one that I have owned. My Viking Fridge was purchased in 2016 from Best Buy, so it is 9 years old. I have never had any significant issues with it. One day back in May of this year, 6 months ago!!, I started noticing a decline in its cooling abilityup until my fridge caught on fire. I corresponded with the customer service team. The Viking Company sent their licensed technician to check it. The report was that the insulation on the top of the fridge fell down into the fan and made it catch on fire, destroying the fan and other surrounding parts and the fridge no longer cooled. Additionally, had I not of been home, likely my entire house would have burned down. The technician that Viking sent was astonished that there was not some kind of grate or other divider to prevent the insulation from ever coming in contact with the fan. To make a long story short, I have been told by the Viking people that my fridge is unrepairable. It is still under the sealed system warranty and now it is a total loss. However, Viking states that the fan is not part of the sealed system. At this point, this is not about the warranty, but an unsafe produce for which I paid thousands of dollars and the company is unwilling to rectify the situation and either replace my fridge or make my fridge work again. The fridge is 9 years old but it should last for a minimum of 10 to 20 years, depending on factors like maintenance, usage, and model. While some Viking units can last longer with proper care, they are built to offer superior durability compared to the average refrigerator lifespan of 10-13 years, with many models engineered for 15-20 years of service. I have been going back and forth with this issue with different people within Viking for 6 months now. The customer service team, often does not answer emails or messages, or have a comprehensive methodology to solve these issues. The top manager,[REDACTED], does not even answer my emails. It has been a very frustrating experience because I am usually working and dont have a ton of time to take care of this. But I come home every night with no fridge. I have been using my garage fridge for 6 months now and I lost a significant amount of food in the whole process. The only thing customer service offered me a 25% discount on a new fridge. While I appreciate the offer, I really cannot afford to buy 75% of a new fridge now nor do I think a life of 9 years for such an expensive fridge is a good thing. The 75% would amount to about 8 or 9 thousand dollars!! This fridge has always been in an air-conditioned house built into the cabinet. There should have been no reason for this to happen. This is faulty and deplorable engineering!!

Ice maker peeking and flaking. Freezer coil constantly freezing up - loosing temperature.

(10/04/2023) The consumer has a safety concern about the icemaker in the refrigerator. A service technician who was checking the product for a different issue, advised him not to use the icemaker because it was flaking and peeling.

If my ice maker is flaking and peeling how many people who have the same product as me and do not know of this problem.

How many people are using ice cubes with flaking material and do not know of the problem and drinking whatever with flakes in there cubes.

The product, in the report: Viking Professional 36” refrigerator with bottom freezer, stainless steel

I have a Viking Professional brand refrigerator. I opened the door in the normal manner, and the door came off the top hinge (but was still connected on the bottom hinge). I had to react quickly to support the very heavy stainless steel door (plus the weight of items stored in the door shelves), and was able to push the door back into position. I have taped it in place and can no longer use the refrigerator.

Less than 5 minutes before this incident, one of my children opened the fridge. Had this happened when he opened the door the outcome would have been tragic - but luckily there were no injuries.

The product, in the report: Viking Refrigerator Model DFSB542, side by side freezer/refrigerator. Purchased with house December 2012. Light use, only 4 people in home. Handle broke 9/6/2016 and 2/21/2023 with normal, light pulling. Break occurs at section of handle where plastic of handle connects with plastic of drawer. Very thin attachment, very poor design & construction. The broken area has sharp edges that cut skin easily when trying to pull open now-broken bin. The broken-off part of the handle is also very sharp at the broken edges; a child would easily hurt themselves if they handled this.

handle of freezer ice bin repeatedly breaks, leaving sharp edges and making it difficult to open ice bin. Has occurred multiple times since purchase (9/6/2016 and 2/20/2023); replacement bins are absurdly expensive.

The product, in the report: Viking Refrigerator/Freezer, side by side Model #: VCSB5481DSS Ice bucket Assy (with auger), Part #019144

I had a new Ice Machine put into my Viking Refrigerator on 2/18/22. My Refrigerator dispenses ice on the freezer door. No one used the ice dispenser until my son did on 4/22/22. While he was dispensing crushed ice, pieces of white plastic was coming out with the ice. He didn’t notice until he started to drink the beverage. He almost choked on the plastic pieces. I just heard there is a recall for certain brands of refrigerators due to choking hazard from Ice Machine. I am currently in discussion now with Viking to replace it but I am having a battle because they are saying it is past the 90 day warranty.

The product, in the report: Viking Professional 48” X 84” side-by-side refrigerator with ice/water dispenser. Stainless steel. This was purchased as part of new home construction. Model VCSB542DSS

On 7/6/21 our Viking 48” side-by-side refrigerator water dispenser suddenly would not shut off and water was continuously flowing. Found the switch and shut the dispenser off. There was a smell of burning wires and the sound of buzzing and electrical arching. 7/6/21 We contacted a repair company to come out. They were supposed to come out on 7/7/21 but did not show up. On 7/7/21 we continued to smell burning wires and heard arching sounds. We shut off the electric breaker to the unit as we could not pull the unit out to unplug it. The repair company showed up on 7/8/21 but did not fix it and only pulled the unit out to shut the water off and located the on/off switch for the unit.

The product, in the report: IT IS A VIKINS FRIDGE, WITH TWO HORIZONTAL DOORS, MODEL DFBB363R, I only have the data from the label inside the fridge that gives me the model number of the fridge, this fridge came with the apartment when we bought it

On the night of April 10, I opened the door of the refrigerator that was working normally until that moment, I closed it and as soon as I turned around I felt a noise as if something broke and when I turned to see what happened, the door of the fridge completely on top of me, I received a strong blow to the left arm and the chest on the left side. luckily my 3 year old baby had left the kitchen. The refrigerator door is extremely heavy and I hit when part of the refrigerator door, kitchen cabinet, kitchen floor fell. So I wanted to see my husband and I already after passing the scare, the upper hinge broke and automatically due to the weight also the lower one, the door of the refrigerator to the c aer split all the separating parts of the internal side of the refrigerator door. call 1-800-241-9152 reporting what happened and giving all the requested reference numbers (serial, refrigerator model etc) I received a. return mail the same April 12 from [REDACTED] with the open case [REDACTED] and they have not even called me to know when they at least come to see and fix what happened, apart from that I still have enough pain in my left breast I’ll even do an ultrasound and mammogram to see that everything is fine. Please I would like to take action on this matter that is delicate. Thank you

The product, in the report: Refrigerator ice maker

I have a Viking refrigerator that was installed 4/2011. In mid 2014 small pieces of plastic debris started to show on ice produced by the ice maker. I was told by Bob’s appliance an authorized Viking repair company that there was fine new construction debris in my water that had scraped the plastic coating off the surface of the ice maker. I paid to replace the ice maker as it was not considered a warranty issue. 5/2018 larger pieces of plastic debris again appeared on the ice. Bob’s came out and this time reported that because I had a water softener it was causing the plastic coating on the ice maker to break down. They removed the ice maker for safety precautions.

The recall on Viking refrigerators was issued July 25, 2013. I was never contacted by Viking or Aitoro Appliance in Norwalk, Ct where the appliance was purchased. I found the recall on line while investigating another issue. I contacted Viking in July of 2015 and received the kit. The repair company, Careys Appliance Service came out on August 4, 2015 and opened the kit and found there was a cobra hinge missing from the kit. We contacted Viking and they dragged their feet on sending out the new kit, many phone call from myself and Careys appliance and the new kit arrived in August 2016. Carey Appliance came out September 6, 2016 to install the new kit and the cobra hinge again was missing. Viking is now trying to tell me that this refrigerator was already repaired in 2012. The repair was not done to this refrigerator Model Number DFBB363R Serial Number 091704H0000001218, it was done to the same serial number, except change the H to a G. They arguing with me that I have the G serial number and I have the H. Careys Appliance took a picture of the H serial number and sent it to them as well. Can you please help me get this repair done before another year goes by

[REDACTED] December 24, 2014 Viking Refrigeration Department Viking Consumer Complaint Division - [REDACTED] Dear Sir/Madam, : Re: Viking Professional Side by Side Refrigerator On November 17, 2014, my wife and I purchased an NV Home at [REDACTED]. One of the main reasons we purchased the home was because it contained the Viking Professional Package. The seller listed the home as having NV Homes Preferred Services for the Viking Appliances thru HADCO 800-241-9152. The homeowner’s manual/documents stated that refrigerator had a full six- year warranty. Unfortunately, your product Viking model number VCSB423DSS serial number 121307R00031053 has not performed well because the icemaker broke and was repaired by Top Notch Appliances to the tune of $323. 95. I am disappointed because the ice maker is again broken. Top Notch Appliances came on 12-15-14 and says there is a new problem. The technician [REDACTED] stated that the wiring harness is now defective, the ice bucket needs to be replaced and to fix it this time it will cost $1,023. 26. I am so disappointed that when we called HADCO they referred us back to Top Notch Appliances as they are the only ones who repair Viking in Warrenton. I feel that the NV Homes homeowner’s manual/documents did not disclose clearly and/or misrepresented your/their warranty. When we began reviewing Consumer Complains on your product and our refrigerator the main complaints revolved around the very issues we are experiencing. I am hopeful that you will help us resolve our issues as soon as possible. To resolve the problem, I would appreciate Viking repair my $10,000 side by side Viking Professional side by side refrigerator. Attached are copies of my records. I look forward to your reply and a resolution to my problem and will wait until December 31, 2014 before seeking help from a consumer protection agency or the Better Business Bureau. Please contact me at the above address/email or by phone at [REDACTED]. Sincerely, [REDACTED], CPM Attachments

Caller’s refrigerator being reported was in home when he moved into it in 2012. There were no problems with the refrigerator noticed until sometime around September 16th, 2013 when the right side of the door fell off. These refrigerators have been reported for this same incident. Caller is reporting this incident to alert the public because this has happened with other refrigerators.

He would ask for a free repair of his unit and that this model and serial number be recalled for the safety of all households.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator (Outdoor under counter) approx 3ft

The consumer reported that she was awaken by the a noise( like broken bottle) around 4 a.m from outside. She looked outside and noticed that they were flames in the barbecue area on the brick patio in her backyard. She went outside to investigate and noticed that the under counter refrigerator was on fire. She used the fire extinguisher and baking soda to contain the flames. She is not sure where the flames started from but there were erupting from the side of the unit. The area was engulfed in black smoke.

The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.

The consumer stated that the fire department came later and advised that the fire might have started from the motor. The electrical was not melted it was still intact. The GFI tripped the breaker. The incident caused the interior of the refrigerator to be charred and she was unable to identify numbers on it.

The product is not involved in a recall.

The product, in the report: Viking Side by Side Refrigerator/Freezer with Custom Panels

The Viking 48” models were recalled due to an issue with the door falling off, as published in 09-242. I have experienced the same issue with my 42” model refrigerator, model DFSB423, purchased and installed in May of 2006. The unit was installed by Viking-certified technician [REDACTED], ID Number [REDACTED], of Coast Installation. In the years after installation, the refrigerator-side door almost fell off its hinges while still under the original 3-year warranty, again similar to the issues in 09-242. Once the hinge was replaced by a Viking-certified technician, the door has not been able to maintain a proper seal, and sits at a noticeable angle relative to the refrigerator. Even though the 42” models have never been part of the recall, I believe that there are 42” models with the same issues as certain 48” and 36” models, and should also be subject to recall.

The product, in the report: VIking Professional Series VIBB536RSS

We have a VIBB536RSS Viking refrigerator purchased in 2011.Last evening my husband went to open the refrigerator door and it seared of the hinge and pinned him between the door and our kitchen island. This is a dangerous and critical issue. I had just had surgery and could barely help him to push the door back on the frame. We have no access to food or supplies, compounded by unavailability of help on Christmas. This is a profoundly scary and unsafe problem that apparently Viking is aware of and does not inform consumers.

The product, in the report: Viking built in bottom mount freezer/refrigerator. Manufactured Jan 2011 per my phone call to manufacturer. LNP #: 00008002840018704064

On my Viking built-in bottom mount freezer/refrigerator (manufactured January 2007) - the screw attaching the pivot plate of the top hinge on the door sheared causing the door to detach from the hinge pivot plate and fall off. It also damaged the other supporting hinges/brackets on the top and bottom of the refrigerator door. I’m thankful that this did not occur while a child was opening the door.

Viking currently has a recall in place for the exact same issue on built-in refrigerator/freezers manufactured prior to April 10, 2006. When I called them to report the problem, they took my statement and would only say that my refrigerator is not part of the recall as it was manufactured after in January 2007, after the manufacture date of April 10, 200 for the recall. The hinge shearing issue clearly has not been resolved by Viking in their products. The door is very heavy and I’m concerned that if this issue is not proactively addressed by the manufacturer, it could create a dangerous situation for consumers - particularly for children and smaller adults.
