The product, in the report: Sub Zero refrigerator, 36x84X24
I was opening the door of my Sub-Zero refrigerator during normal household use when the refrigerator door came off & failed at the hinge and nearly fell on top of me. I had to move out of the way to avoid being struck by the heavy door. Fortunately, I was not physically injured, but the incident presented a serious risk of injury.
This refrigerator was previously subject to a safety recall involving the door hinge and was repaired by Sub-Zero under that recall. After the recall repair, the door or hinge still appeared loose. During a later service visit, I specifically asked a Sub-Zero technician to tighten or secure it.
Despite those repairs, the hinge/door attachment failed. I am reporting this because a refrigerator door of this size and weight unexpectedly detaching during ordinary use could cause serious injury, particularly since this unit had already received the manufacturers recall remedy.

While working as a site merchandiser during the setup of a new office for [REDACTED], I sustained a physical injury caused by a consumer product used in that workplace. My injury continues to cause me significant pain, swelling, and weakness in my hand. I contacted Sub-Zero customer service and was informed that the refrigerator is not registered, which means there is no proper tracking or associated responsibility by the manufacturer. The representative was only able to confirm that the model number Indicates the product was purchased this year, but could not provide any further details regarding ownership, installation, or the importer/private labeler. Sub-Zeros negligence in ensuring proper safety warnings and installation guidelines contributed directly to this injury. After reporting the incident to OSHA on August 28,2025, I received a complaint NO. [REDACTED] and was confirmed through mail that a handle was installed after my report to OSHA, indicating a delayed response to a documented hazard. My hand orthopedic doctor has documented me to be out of work for several months. My doctor has declared me temporarily disabled and unable to work until I am reevaluated next month. I am currently receiving physical therapy to regain use of my hand. The product that was being used was a Sub-Zero custom panel refrigerator. The refrigerator was being accessed and used by the client and various employees at the office. My role as a site merchandiser involves stocking, breaking down boxes, lifting, carrying, and switching/carrying kegerators and gas tanks. I was setting up and organizing beverages/dairy, and perishables inside the Sub-Zero refrigerator as part of my tasks during the office implementation. The client and employees working in that office use the fridge to take out items they want throughout the day. Yes, I suffered a hand injury to my left thumb that immediately caused blood to build up underneath my nail, and immediate sharp pain and swelling from the weight of the refrigerator door closing on it. As a result of the incident, I was diagnosed with a bone contusion of the first distal phalanx of my left thumb. A handle was strongly recommended for safe and easy operation, especially considering the weight of the door. According to the manufacturer’s manual, page 12 in installation guide Custom door/drawer panels and handle hardware must be installed. D-style handles are recommended. This indicates that Sub-Zero expects a handle to be part of a standard installation, particularly because the door panels can be quite heavy (up to 75 lbs / 34 kg) and there is no built-in grip or edge pull on the door. The injury occurred because the refrigerator was installed without a handle, making it impossible for me to safely close or guide the heavy door, especially given the unit’s weight and lack of a soft-close feature. As I attempted to close the refrigerator using my left hand, my left thumb was caught and pinched between the refrigerator door surrounding complete wood. The cushioning that typically reduces impact was positioned far inside the fridge, offering no protection where the pinch occurred causing the wooden surface to directly hit my thumb.

The product, in the report: Side by Side Refrigerator
The consumer emptied the ice maker and saw that it clogged up again a few days later. This has been happening for 1 – 2 months.
3/15/2024: A service technician inspected the refrigerator. An electrical wire was exposed and burned a hole through the refrigerator’s plastic housing and could burn a person who touched it and create an electric shock [ILLEGIBLE]. The wire was right in front of the door. The technician ordered replacement parts and will return to do the repair next week.
There were no injuries.
Water leak from the refrigerator in the past, where the drain hose was clogged, but the consumer was able to get that fixed.

First aid Made Jun 17, 2022, sent to the company Jun 27, 2022, published by CPSC Jul 12, 2022
The product, in the report: Sub-Zero refrigerator-freezer
My Sub-Zero refrigerator door’s self closing feature failed. My husband ordered a plastic replacement part to repair it. Before he had chance to do so, I opened the door to remove a stored item, and the door swing off it’s hinges, landing on top of me and pushing me across the floor. My husband lifted the door off of me and replaced the plastic part. As a former EMT, I tended to my injuries. Numerous bruises and cuts on the right side of my body, and a large lump on my head. I dressed the cuts and iced the impacted areas. They are still sore to the touch and various shades of black and yellow today, a week later. Had I been a child or frail adult or alone, it could have resulted in a major injury or death.

On February 7th, 2016m while i was taking food out from the freezer and putting into the refrigerator, the unit tipped over and fell on me. I suffered cuts and bruises. First aid Made May 7, 2014, sent to the company May 14, 2014, published by CPSC May 29, 2014
The product, in the report: 48” Sub-Zero 695 Side-by-Side Refrigerator/Freezer offers ice and water dispensing through the refrigerator door.
This complaint and warning is for the side-by-side Sub-Zero Refrigerator Model 690/S, Serial # P1872009 and is in regards to the stainless steel molding trim panel around the ice and water dispenser. This stainless steel molding trim panel is affixed the the refrigerator door with some sort of 2-side adhesive which has lost part of its adhesion properties allowing the molding trim panel to come lose to be permanently displaced from the refrigerator door’s surface and raised about 1 inch.
Since this trim panel is immediately below the door handle, there is a permanent dangerous interaction with anyone accessing the refrigerator door with fingers and hands reaching right by the the stainless steel trim panel. The danger resides with this now-raised trim panel which has a true razor-sharp edge all around, having already severely injured an adult’s finger with a very deep cut. The potential for a child’s hand or fingers is to virtually sever or cut-off an entire finger.
This very deep cut occurred on Jan-4-2014 and the picture we have is from 4 days later clearly showing the injury on my left hand, ring finger. The injury is still not completely healed to this day.
On Jan-07-2014, I called Sub-Zero customer care line 800-222-7820, 2:05 PM, who promptly transferred me to the company’s legal counsel voicemail box, where I left a detailed message reported the occurred incident. I never received a call back or follow-up from Sub-Zero regarding the injury or more concerning, on their solution to fix or replace the trim panel in question.
