  1. No one hurt

Made Sep 24, 2013, sent to the company Oct 18, 2013, published by CPSC Nov 1, 2013

The product, in the report: Maytag 18.6 Performa white bottom freezer refrigerator,

This refrigerator was used in our garage. We bought it new as a discontinued model from Lowes in 2007 or 2008. The breaker was blown in the garage which knocked out the lights. About a minute later, and because I was standing next to the refrigerator, I could smell something electrical burning. I looked toward the fridge and saw an orange glow behind it that quickly turned to flames coming from the bottom in the back. The fire extinguisher was not handy so we dragged it out of the garage, then put the fire out. The whole process lasted about 4 minutes. We then checked Maytag for recalls, did not find our model listed. We called Maytag, explained to them what happened, and they sent out a repairman. He condemned it and it will not be fixed. He also said it was the worst he has seen. There was no damage to the house other than burn marks on the garage floor. We had very fortunate timing as we had not been in the garage for several hours or we would have had a very different ending.

The product, in the report: Side by side refrigerator

The consumer indicated that this is his third compressor that was placed in the refrigerator and it continues to overheat .

The dates of service for the repairs were mid 2010, 6/2011, 11/1/2011 and he used a thermal red thermometer to detect the heat from the refrigerators compressor.

The firm was contacted on 11/14/2011 and he was advised that his model/serial number was not affected by a recall.

He advised the representative that he spoke with that he was experiencing the same failure as in Release # 09-145 where there is an electrical failure in the relay, the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.

He has not made any final decisions if he wants to replaced the compressor or the entire unit. No further information was provided.
