The product, in the report: 36-Inch Wide Side-by-Side Refrigerator with Exterior Ice and Water Dispenser - 25 Cu. Ft.
I was getting ice from our refrigerator’s ice maker when a large shard of plastic fell into my cup. After investigating, I discovered a part of the ice maker tray, which is located directly above the ice bin, had broken off and fell into the ice bin. This is the 2nd occurrence of the same problem. The first instance occurred approximately 1 year after purchase and Whirlpool replaced the entire freezer door, including the ice maker unit. After contacting Whirlpool Safety department with the most recent instance, they sent a technician to verify the issue and then asked me to purchase a new fridge/freezer unit as they did not view this issue to be a safety concern.
The ice maker has an inherent flaw with the use of thin plastic prone to breaking and positioned in a manner that will guarantee contamination of ice with plastic debris and to which may cause serious harm or death if the user does not closely inspect the contents of ice being dispensed after each use. The issue is further exacerbated and posses an even greater risk to the consumer if the crushed ice option is selected on the dispenser, as it would grind any plastic shards into small pieces that would be indistinguishable from the crushed ice. Additionally, due to the placement of the ice maker, any failure of the component, including broken pieces, is not visible to the consumer and requires complete disassembly of the entire ice maker unit.

The product, in the report: Side by side refrigerator Model # MSB27C2XAM00
My Maytag refrigerator experienced a control board fire, which filled the house with toxic electrical smoke and caused it to dispense water onto the floor. No one was using the appliance at the time, as everyone was asleep when this occurred around 2 AM. We struggled with breathing difficulties for several days afterward and were fortunate that our house didn’t catch fire or suffer significant water damage. We rely on this refrigerator as our main appliance for storing perishable food that we use daily.

The product, in the report: Maytag Side-By-Side Refrigerator Model#: MSC21C6MFZ00 Serial#: HR83720244
Product: 2018 (MFR Date: 201809) Maytag side-by-side refrigerator, Model#: MSC21C6MFZ00, Serial Number: HR83720244. Safety Concern: Frayed/broken electrical wiring at the base of the freezer door presents exposed wiring and a risk of electrical shock or fire. Operational Failure: The broken wiring results in failure of electrical components (ice maker, etc...) in freezer door. Root Cause: The design of the refrigerator allows the wiring for the freezer door to be pinched at or near the bottom hinge. Over the course of normal operation, the opening and closing of the freezer door eventually fatigues the wiring to the point the wire is either exposed or broken.

The product, in the report: Maytag Refrigerator
To Whom It May Concern:
In 2007 we purchased a Maytag French Door Refrigerator from Lowes. We had not had any trouble with it until 2020 when it came to our knowledge that the refrigerator was defective from the Maytag Corporation. It had been patched with putty on the copper tube for the [refrigerant]. This refrigerator was sold with that patch job. It had stopped running and we called a repairman to come out. The repairman told us that there was a leak in this copper tubing and it was repaired by wrapping putty around the tube. Had we known this at the time of purchase we would have never bought the refrigerator. We called Lowes with our concern and did not get any cooperation from them. There was a recall on Maytag refrigerators in 2007 but we were not aware of there was a recall on the one we had purchased. Due to the fact that Lowes sold this refrigerator knowingly or unknowingly that it was a defect, we feel that reimbursement for the repair should be refunded for the amount we had to spend on the repair which was $800.00.
Attached are photos and a copy of the repair bill. Sincerely,
[REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Maytag side by side, Model MSD2651HES, serial # 52198523JC
Our Maytag side by side refrigerator, purchased in 2006, gets extremely hot on the outside of the freezer and where the freezer closes. Ice in the holding compartment melt together and we have to remove large chunks. Then it will eventually cool down but the outside of the refrigerator still remains warm. Then it will get really HOT to the touch again. It’s been happening for several months now. We are extremely worried about an electrical fire. My husband is disabled and would have a difficult time getting out.

The product, in the report: The ice maker (model & serial# destroyed) already installed within the freezer when we purchased our Maytag refrigerator - a conventional freezer above, refrigerator below. model#M1TXEGMYW01, ser.#VS24872708, manf. 11/2012, caught fire overnight without warning and was totally destroyed and burned most of the way through to the outside of the refrigerator. We had our lawyer send a letter to Whirlpool strongly suggesting they examine the burned icemaker. We received a template letter back ignoring everything we said and w/o instructions for sending them the burned icemaker.
The ice maker in the freezer of our Maytag refrigerator, model#M1TXEGMYW01, ser.#VS24872708, caught fire overnight and burned most of the way through the side of the freezer and generated copious nasty smoke - I believe it could have easily have caused a fatality, but we were lucky and uninjured.

The product, in the report: Side by side refrigerator (freezer on 1 side and refrigerator on the other).
Around 2/23/2021, both portions of the side-by-side refrigerator stopped cooling.
2/25/2021: The consumer checked on-line and thought her refrigerator might be part of the CPSC Recall# 09-145. However, when she called the firm several times, various representatives told her that her unit was not recalled.
The consumer contacted a local service company and the technician that came out told her that the compressor had stopped working.
The consumer followed up with the service company and a rep. told her that according to [REDACTED], her refrigerator may be included in a recall. The consumer said at that time, the service company referred her to the manufacturer and the manufacturer referred back to the service company. She is caught in the middle of those 2 companies.
The consumer has medication in the refrigerator for a family member and said that presents a safety hazard to the family member, because the medication has to be kept at a certain temperature.
Approximately 2016: The ice maker stopped working and a technician had to come out and repair it.

The product, in the report: Maytag Performa side-by-side refrigerator/freezer Model PPSD268LGW1
The ice maker in my Maytag Performa seemed to always work normally (it came with the pre-owned house I bought 4-5 yrs. ago), but recently I noticed what looked like little shards of broken white glass dispensing out with the ice. I finally figured out that they were pieces of the Ice Auger End Cap that had been chipping off of the slot where the thick metal coil that turns the ice meets it. I think the Ice Auger End Cap is really made of a very hard plastic, but the pieces that break off of it are very sharp-edged and feel like glass.
Fortunately I didn’t swallow the piece that landed in my glass of iced tea, and no one was injured. I did find several more pieces when I emptied the ice bin.
In working to replace the Ice Auger End Cap, I noticed that the ice bin had a hairline crack on the lip where it slides into place on the track in the freezer. Don’t know if this could have caused the breakage to the Ice Auger End Cap. (There are no chips missing from the bin, it’s just a clean hairline crack that I have now repaired and the bin seemed completely stable before I removed it.)

The product, in the report: Maytag Refrigerator French Door Model: 2569VEQ1 Serial: KY4098828 Purchased new on 10/15/2009
I got myself a glass of ice and water from the built-in ice/water dispenser from our Maytag refrigerator. While drinking the ice water I was surprised to see a piece of hard plastic mixed among the ice cubes in my drink. As I was wanting to find out where it could have possibly come from, I removed the ice holding tray and the ice that was in the holding tray. To my surprise I found it was a piece of hard plastic that had broken off inside the ice dispenser. We are afraid to continue to use the ice dispenser as there could be small shards of hard plastic that could continue to break off and be ingested. We also have a granddaughter who may not have noticed small shards of hard plastic, any of us could have already ingested small shards of hard plastic. On 7/27/2020 we wrote Maytag about the above complaint saying “We are afraid to continue to use the ice dispenser as there could be small shards of hard plastic that could continue to break off and be ingested. We are requesting Maytag to replace the ice maker, including repair and labor. This is a defect of materials and it is a danger to our health. The ice dispenser is now useless, we are afraid to continue to use it. We have not received any kind of recall notice on our ice dispenser. On 8/18/2020 we received a call from a Maytag representative [REDACTED] at 3:45 PM) saying they could provide us with the phone number of a repair service but, the refrigerator is not quite 10 years old, no longer covered by warranty and there have not been any recalls and they would not take care of the repair. We said we were glad our Granddaughter had not choked on the plastic and she offered no response to our comment about the hard plastic. As of today we have not received any documents In writing regarding our complaint from Maytag.

No one hurt Made May 2, 2020, sent to the company May 11, 2020, published by CPSC May 26, 2020
The product, in the report: Maytag refrigerator, French door with bottom freezer Model MFF2557KES
Item: Maytag French door, freezer on bottom, refrigerator Model #: MFF2557KES Serial #: 10132472JL Short Name: Appliance Fire Incident: Refrigerator compressor controller-relay caught fire during normal, residential use. No extraordinary circumstances existed: temperature, pressure, humidity, power load, and demand on the appliance were all unremarkable. Narrative: While in the adjacent room to my kitchen, I smelled the distinct, acrid odor of burning plastic. I followed my nose into the kitchen where I heard my refrigerator compressor attempting to spool up while also hearing the sound of arching electricity. I pulled the refrigerator away from wall to look for any sign of distress at the outlet, but found no indication of a problem with the wall socket. I did encounter a much more concentrated odor of burning plastic coming from the back of the unit’s cabinet. I immediately turned the power off at the circuit breaker. I unplugged the unit from the wall and removed the rear access panel to investigate the problem and search out any damage. I cleaned all dust from the surfaces. I briefly plugged the unit in and witnessed the compressor relay housing emit a growing flame along with the sound of arching electricity. I again unplugged the unit and called for service. The service rep stated he had never seen that condition before. Assessment: Compressor relay failed in a hazardous, unacceptable manner.
Editorial: If I had not been home at that exact moment, there is a very real chance my home would have been destroyed and my wife severely injured or killed.

The product, in the report: its a side by side Maytag refrigerator with a built in ice maker in the freezer. It is white in color.
I bought My Maytag side-by-side refrigerator brand new and have had it ever since 2000. It caught on fire while I was putting food in the freezer side on 4-26-2020. I had opened up the door and bump the wire that starts the ice maker and it started to run. It started giving off small Sparks and then it started giving off a lot move sparks, black smoke and flames. At first I panic and shut the door. Then I thought, I didn’t know if fire would go out and thought it would smoke all my food so I opened up the door again. The Sparks, flames and the smoke were much worse. the fire ball was about 8 inch and the smoke was about 18 inch tall coming out the whole top of door opening on the the freezer side. At first I thought I’d try and pull the refrigerator out and unplug it and then I realized I couldn’t move it. After about 15 seconds, I ran down the hall and through the main power disconnect for the whole house and killed it. It took a couple minutes for the smoke and flames to die down. After removing the ice maker unit and the ice tray from the wall of the refrigerator, I found I had a 1 foot diameter burn mark on the wall of the refrigerator. I had to use soft scrub to get the smoke stain off and found that I had a 4 inch spot melted into the plastic wall of the freezer. I have pictures of after I cleaned it.

My 8-year-old daughter was getting ice from our refrigerator’s ice maker when a large shard of plastic fell into her cup. We investigated and found that part of the ice maker had cracked into several pieces. We emptied the bin and we think we removed all the plastic pieces. We purchased this refrigerator new 6 months ago.

1) Found sharp, jagged piece of plastic 1/8” x 1/2” inside ice cube dispensed from ice maker into my drinking-cup. Lucky to have seen it before I swallowed it and was injured. Under warranty Whirlpool replaced ice maker at no charge.
2) Year later found sharp, jagged plastic 1/8” x 7/8” inside ice cube dispensed from newly installed ice maker. Lucky to have seen it before accidently drinking it.
3) After many phone calls over the passed few months - Maytag/Whirlpool 1-800-688-9900 and Whirlpool’s designated service co., via factory service 1-410-451-4104, Maytag trust keepers, Benson Harbor 1-866-526-7969, Maytag’s online survey complaint, and also finding add’l sharp pieces in ice cubes, I find customer service to be oblivious to the danger this defective ice maker presents, along w/ great inconvenience it causes me.
I request a satisfactory solution to correcting this problematic ice maker that has the potential to cause choking - especially in my grandchildren.

I just got rid of a Maytag Refrigerator in which the compressor was in flames. We noticed that the house smelled funny and the VOC numbers had jumped very high. I heard a crackling noise and my husband realized that it was the fridge. He opened up the back of it and flames shot out of I think the compressor. It was basically an electrical fire. I have a video of it. We had to buy a new fridge immediately because Thanksgiving is in 3 days.

The product, in the report: Maytag side by side refrigerator
On a Monday morning I was walking out the door to head to work. I’d forgotten to take my cold medicine, so I went back in for just a second to get it. While getting a glass of water I heard a buzz/sizzle sound in the kitchen. I looked around, but didn’t know where it was coming from. About 15 seconds later I heard it again, followed by a slight whiff of electrical burn. Within about 30 seconds my kitchen was filling up with black smoke coming from under the refrigerator. I looked behind and saw sparks. I unplugged the unit and it stopped. I removed the back panel and saw that the connector to the compressor and the wires into it were charred black. I don’t know if there had been any flames, as it was caught right away. If I hadn’t gone back into the house at that moment and caught it, I’m scared for what might have happened to my sleeping family and pets, and everything I own. Now I see that there was a recall in 2009 due to this very issue and fire hazard. I register everything, so I’m shocked that I was not notified about this as they have my contact information. I had to get a new refrigerator, and it was NOT a Maytag !!!

The product, in the report: Maytag Top Freezer Refrigerator
I have a Maytag refrigerator that can be very dangerous. The handle on the freezer door comes all the way to the bottom of the door sticking out several inches. When leaning into the refrigerator to grab something you have to duck down not to hit the corner of the freezer door. Many times I have hit my head and just thought that was stupid then one day I hit it hard enough to knock me out and down to the floor. I have looked at many of their designs online, they have more than Maytag and I see most of the Top Freezer refrigerators have the freezer door handle too low and is a danger to hitting a person’s head. They NEED to make there handles flush or almost flush with the bottom of the freezer door. Please, someone look at these it’s just a problem on their refrigerators with the Freezer on top. The freezer handles stick out several inches making it possible to hit your head. I like my refrigerator I just shouldn’t have to duck down to not get hurt by the handle. This is the current models that are selling today, many others will have this same problem.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator ice dispenser plastic piece at end of dispenser broke off in twice on both sides of part.
I’m reporting a serious safety issue with a Maytag ice dispenser in refrigerator model number MFI2568AEB Serial number 12569744LR. A few months ago one of us almost swallowed and choked on a white piece of plastic that came out of the automatic ice dispenser. When I looked in the ice dispenser I did not see any plastic but only the metal auger. Today my wife said that my daughter got another piece of hard plastic in her drink this morning 12/19/2013. When I saw the plastic it looked just like the one that I found before. I then pulled the entire unit out and saw that white plastic is at the end of the metal auger right before the ice is dispensed out of the unit. I then took of four screws to see if I could get a better look at the part. The white plastic piece slide right off the metal auger. With the part in my hand I could see the two areas in which the plastic parts broke off. The break on both sides of the auger was identical. We are lucky that no one choked but this plastic auger piece should be corrected so that no one gets hurt from it. I called Maytag today and told them of my issue. Please check thiis issue and have Maytag/Whirpool address this problem.

No one hurt Made Oct 18, 2013, sent to the company Dec 3, 2013, published by CPSC Dec 17, 2013
The product, in the report: Refrigerator
On May 18, 2012 we purchased a Maytag Frost Free Refrigerator with a bottom Freezer, Model #MBF2258XEW1, Serial # K21704209. The freezers of frost free refrigerators remain frost free by defrosting regularly and the water drains from the freezer to a drain pan under the unit and subsequently evaporates. Unfortunately, my refrigerator and all the other similar units built by Whirlpool for all the brands It owns came with an improperly designed drain; It falls to do the job. The end of the drain is too narrow for all the melted water to drain Into the drain pan during the defrost cycle. The water that remains refreezes until the next defrost cycle when it melts and refreezes. This cycle continues until the drain is frozen solid and any ice that melts refreezes and stays on the bottom of the freezer. Eventually the ice expands along the bottom of the freezer and pushes against the inside front of the freezer drawer preventing it from closing all the way. At this time the water had no place to go except out onto our ceramic tiled kitchen floor creating a slip and fall hazard for unsuspecting consumers such as us. Fortunately my 76 year old husband was able to right himself before he fell and was seriously injured. The water started leaking when the unit was about 14+ months old. We never saw the Ice on the bottom because the food In the freezer drawer blocked the view. When my husband contacted Maytag he was told to call for a service call because the unit was more than a year old. We called the vendor we purchased the unit from; he sent a certified Whirlpool repairman who told us what was wrong and that a newly designed replacement part called a P Trap or Tube-Drain, part # W10619951, has just become available and he has four on back order. He advised us to call Maytag to see if they will send us the part and install it without charge. We contacted Maytag and they agreed to send us the part at no charge but refused to pay for the service call and Installation of the newly designed replacement part. We received the part and it has been installed by a certified Whirlpool repairman for a charge of $149.95; an unwelcome challenge for senior citizens. He also informed us that he is being kept busy correcting this problem in brands of similar units built by Whirlpool. Why is it when an automotive company makes a mistake the car is recalled and the manufacturer pays for the part/parts to correct the problem and the labor costs while an appliance company gives you the part if you are lucky enough to have someone tell you what to ask for and you have to pay to have it installed? Why aren’t Whirlpool and Its brands more forthcoming when they screw up and willing to pay for their mistakes instead of hitting the consumer with the cost of correcting their mistakes? How do I get my $149.95 back from the manufacturer? Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

The product, in the report: Maytag French Door Refrigerator, white, 25 cu. ft.
Maytag refrigerator is 5 years old. We are remodeling kitchen and moved the refrigerator 5 feet to the entryway. It has been plugged in and operational in the entryway. When it was moved back to the original refrigerator cubbie area and plugged in by the electrician it began smoking, caught on fire. It was immediately unplugged. The electrician checked the voltage and it was correct.
We have had nothing but problems with this refrigerator. During the first year, 3 service calls for rattling or vibration. Serviceman tried to say it was the [refrigerant] line. Gave up calling for repairs - they never worked.

Refrigerator was source of strong electrical burning smell but seemed to be otherwise functional. Source of smell was small fire around the power connector for main compressor. If I had not been home at the time to detect the burning smell, it would likely have caught the house on fire.

The product, in the report: Wide- by-side black refrigerator by Maytag, model# MZD2766G
Our Maytag wide-by-side refrigerator Model# MZD2766G was purchased in 2002. Last week we woke up from the smell of smoke, I went downstairs and saw that our kitchen and family room were filling with thick smoke that smelled like an electrical fire. Called 911, firemen came and after several minutes realized that the smoke was coming from the refrigerator. It was something behind the refrigerator back panel that was smoldering.

No one hurt Made Nov 2, 2012, sent to the company Nov 20, 2012, published by CPSC Dec 5, 2012
The product, in the report: side by side fridge.
My family & I were on our way out to take our children to soccer last Wednesday October 24th 2012 when my son smelled smoke. I immediately went to my oven to make sure that I had turned everything off and determined that it was safe but still smelled the smoke. When we finally saw the smoke coming from underneath the fridge we all panicked and pulled the fridge out to which the sparks and smoke got stronger. My husband immediately unplugged the fridge and we unscrewed the back of the fridge to see the melted parts with smoke all around. Needless to say we couldn’t leave the house as we were afraid of the damage that would have happened if it was 5 minutes later when the house would have been empty. It was 7pm at night so we didn’t what to do but borrow neighbors freezers and put our daughters insulin and all of our food outside on the back porch for the night. The next day my husband went to go get the part to try to fix it himself (missing work) and the parts store told him to speak with a repair place because he believed it was a fire recall item. When the repair man came 2 days later it was discovered that the fire had casted the condenser to break down as well and that we needed to coact May tag direct to see what they were going to do. I have been in “phone” contact off & on for the last week with week with May tag and the only thing they will offer is 25% off one of their products to purchase a new fridge or fix the condenser. The fridge smells now and I don’t feel safe with this fridge knowing that the fire caused the condenser to break down too, we are also wondering what other problems will arise from this fire in the future and are not willing to take that chance. We have been not sleeping for the last 9 days moving food around, our children have to go outdoors to get their milk and my daughters insulin. We’ve lost food and time trying to figure out what we should do. We are very disappointed with Maytag’s offer because when I asked why we weren’t contacted about this recall she explained it was all of the television and that our fidge wasn’t registered, however if we had seen it we would have fixed the issue at that time so that we could have avoided all this stress.

Smoke alarm went off at 5:30am and woke me up. I came downstairs to burnt plastic smell in kitchen. Once my husband and I pulled the cover off the back of our Maytag french door refrigerator Model Mff2557HEW Serial number 12962946JG purchased 9-26-2006 at a Sears Outlet Center, I found the relay switch connected to the compressor had flames coming out the bottom of the relay when the compressor turned on. The smoke was drawn to the fan on left side and had activated my smoke alarm. I unplugged my refrigerator. I then went on line to look for information and found this website. It is Sunday morning and no one is open. My model and serial numbers are not listed in the recall but the problem does fit the recall.

The product, in the report: “Maytag Gold” Side-By-Side Refrigerator, color is white
The shelves in my Maytag side-by side refrigerator fall out at least a few times a month. They do not securely stay attached to the interior door panel on the refigerator side. The shelves are filled with gallon jugs of milk, and many glass condiment containers. When the door is opened, all the shelves come crashing down, one on top of the other, and the heavy jugs of milk and glass condiment containers come crashing down on the floor and feet of whoever opened the door. The glass bottles break and cut the feet and the items that don’t break, land on the feet and bruise and break toes. Damage is also done to the wood floor: scratches, dents, moisture damage between wood slats.
The date below (May 11, 2007) is the first date that I reported the problem to Maytag to try and resolve the issue. The shelves came crashing down at least 10 times before that and have come crashing down at least 25 times since. Maytag would do nothing except offer me $100 toward a purchase of a new Maytag refrigerator. I did not wnat to buy another product from this company. I only wanted them to fix the one I already owned.
I had no idea I could report this until today when I came upon your website by accident. I was looking to see if there was a recall on my refigerator.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator
The consumer stated that she discovered mold in the refrigerator few days ago.
It has a drip pan that can not be removed to clean it and it fills up and molds. Maytag has not offered any help at all so I started searching online and lot of people have this problem and not just with Maytag. My son has been very ill with airborne allergies this winter and we were told these have to be cleaned at least once a year if you have anyone with immune or allergy problems. I am very concerned and I wonder if anyone has ever looked into this. Asthma keeps becoming more and more common. I just think health and indoor air quality it not something any company should ever put at risk. They didn’t help at all so I don’t feel like they cared or would even admit it could be an issue. I feel sick after attempting to clean it. I don’t know who to tell but I feel like this is an unsafe or at least unhealthy practice.
3/22/12 The manufacturer was contacted and she was advised that it was not a removable item and it was still safe for her to use.
The consumer feels that this refrigerator is a health hazard and should be investigated.

I heard this popping noise like something electrical. We searched all over the kitchen but could find nothing. The next morning we woke up to our Refrigerator and Freezer @ 67 degrees. I called Maytag and requested service repair. My Refrigerator is 14 months old. They said I had to buy a warranty to cover this repair for $299.00. I paid that amount since the 12 month warranty was out. The Serviceman came out and the compressor and circuit board was melted. He had to get authorization for the parts because they were so expensive. He told me that he ordered a new compressor, circuit board and some electrical, but still wasn’t sure if this would repair the problem. He also said he was surprised it didn’t catch on fire and to leave the Refrigerator unplugged. It will take 2 weeks for the parts to come in and it will take 3 hours to do the repair. I called Maytag and asked them why I should have to go a total of three weeks without a Refrigerator to see if this repair will even work. I was told that they have to repair it 3 times before they will replace the refrigerator. I then asked to speak to a manager and was put on eternal hold. I called back and asked directly for a manager but there was no one available. They took my name and number and I am still waiting for that call. I will NEVER buy another Maytag appliance. My Refrigerator is the French Doors with Ice Maker and Freezer on Bottom, Model #MFI2569VEM4.

The product, in the report: French door refrigerator
My daughter suffered an injury from a Maytag french door refrigerator. As she was opening the bottom drawer out, the handle came off and cut her left arm. I contacted Maytag and they sent out a technician to my home. The technician wants to put the broken handle back on even though I have expressed my concern of this incident repeating itself and the handle comming off again due to stripped holes on the bottom door. He didn’t care and is going to simply put the broken handle back on. They have completely disregarded the fact that this part inflicted injury to my child and simply have expressed that they just don’t care. Now my daughters arm is cut and my fridge is broken. Maytag should be ashamed of themselves.

The product, in the report: Maytag french door refrigerator -bottom glass shelf
Yesterday, right after I washed the bottom glass shelf from my Maytag refrigerator (model # MFI2269 VEM1) with warm water in the sink it “exploded” into thousands of small pieces. Fortunately, I was not hurt but I think that I could have been. To note, after taking the glass shelf out of the refrigerator, I had let it sit on the table for about 10 minutes while I washed other pieces - so it did have a chance to warm up before I started washing it. Further, the water I used was warm - not hot. I was shocked at how the glass just exploded. I wanted to make sure that this was reported so others would not get hurt.

Shortly after arriving home she noticed that there was a electrical burning smell in the home and when she detected the odor coming from the refrigerator that was when she noticed smoke coming from the rear of it. She then contacted the police station who dispatched the local fire department .
Bowling Green Fire Department in Bowling Green MO came out to the home and advised the consumer that the failure was with the relay in the refrigerator and she was advised not to use it. The unit was unplugged to prevent any further use.
While doing some research online the consumer came across a recall (see Release #09-322) where the hazard was a electrical failure in the relay, the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.
She noticed that her model number and serial number was affected and contacted the firm on 12/5/2011 and the representative (name was not provided ) advised that her unit was not affected by the recall and they could send out a service technician but she would be required to pay for it.
The consumer declined in the matter and since then replaced the refrigerator. She contacted the CPSC on 12/5/2011 and the representative that she spoke with contacted the fire and was advised that the consumer model number was not affected by the recall because it had a new relay compressor in it.

Our refrigerator was leaking water from the freezer. We found ice on the bottom and so decided to remove the interior shroud to see if indeed ice was building up and if the drain is clogged.
We discovered one side of the coils, is melted...interior plastic liner of the freezer is melted in one section and discolored brownish...from what appears to be burning. I am concerned about this! Seems very unsafe...like a fire hazard!

The fire department was contacted. It was determined to be coming from the refrigerator.

Caller & wife were awakened around 4:00AM by the smoke alarm on Sunday, October 16, 2011. They went to the kitchen, opened a window, turned the ceiling fan on to clear thick smoke that had accumulated in house, then began searching for fire, saw flames coming from rear of refrigerator. Orange/red flames were no more than a couple of inches high above the compressor.
Smoke was thick enough so that you could see it but not so thick that you couldn’t see through it, caller attributes this to the smoke alarm being in the kitchen and so sounding quickly.
Caller’s refrigerator is recalled on release# 09-145, he has already contacted manufacturer via the recall hotline and scheduled repair for October 20, 2011, however when he contacted[REDACTED]-Maytag this morning 10/17/2011, informed them that the refrigerator was non functional due to it’s catching fire, he didn’t get the name of the person he spoke with but states that he was told that they would come out this afternoon 10/17/2011.
Caller would like this refrigerator repaired or replaced at manufacturer expense.
As of this report date repair was only partially accomplished. Replaced wires were only “wire-nut” connected - there is to be the correct “wire-harness” replacing temporary wiring in very near future, according to [REDACTED]- Maytag technician.
The reported product was purchased on about 1/15/11 from the original purchaser.
The retailer state is Maryland.

The product, in the report: Maytag Plus Refrigerator Model # MTB1956DEB Serial 12569952YK
Maytag refrigerator has a serious overheating problem. My guess is it has the same issue as already recalled Maytag units but somehow Maytag claims it is not part of the recall. How I don’t know.
The front of the unit is very hot to the touch and hot enough to cause food stored in the freezer door to not freeze, almost but not quite melting. Adjusting the controls does not correct the problem. I believe this is a fire hazard. By contrast food in the non freezer section freezes on a very low setting, possible the unit is overworking due to the defect.
Model name - Maytag Plus, Model # - MTB1956DEB, Serial # 12569952YK
The recalled Maytag side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators were manufactured in the U.S. and sold in department and appliance stores and by home builders nationwide from January 2001 through January 2004. The recalled Maytag refrigerators retailed for between about $350 and $1600. The affected refrigerators were manufactured in black, bisque, white and stainless steel.
According to the report, an electrical failure in the relay, the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard. Maytag has received 41 reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including 16 reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.

The product, in the report: Maytag Side by Side Refrigerator. MSD2651HEQ 524D9368JE
I purchased 3 Maytag appliances 5 years ago. Yesterday, I smelled a strong electrical fire and traced it to my refrigerator. My husband found an electrical failure in the relay. The compressor has ceased to work. I was lucky to have caught the problem and had the presence of mind to shut off the electricity.
I checked to see if this was on a recall list. I found a recall list for the identical problem (electrical failure in relay), but my model and serial number were not listed. I was told by the automated website that I could continue using the refrigerator safely as it was not on the recall list.” Huh?
In the meantime, I learned that the dishwasher we purchased IS on a recall list due to fire hazard! A repairman will look at it on Saturday.
The top oven in the double oven stove has ceased to work.
We paid top dollar for what we thought were quality appliances and just 5 years later have 3 appliances the are defective (2 of which are dangerous!).
What can I do about this??? I’m especially concerned about the refrigerator as the replacement of a compressor costs almost as much as a new refrigerator.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator (french door model, with bottom mount freezer; cabinet-depth)
On 7/2/2011, went into the kitchen and smelled burning. Interior temperature of refrigerator had risen to about 90 degrees. All of the food was spoiled and freezer contents had melted. We were very concerned the refrigerator would overheat and/or possibly start a fire, especially considering the burning smell we also had smelled. We have two very small children and were concerned for their safety and ours, so we unplugged the refrigerator for safety reasons. Immediately reported the burning to Maytag’s automated customer service line which assigned a repair tech to come to our home on 7/5/2011. On 7/5/2011, repair technician came to the home and said that the compressor was defective/burned out. Same day called Maytag while repair tech was present in the home and explained incident and concerns but Maytag representatives didn’t seem concerned at all. Also, they refused repair and/or warranty claim even though refrigerator had obviously burned up and was covered by warranty. Also representatives tried to claim 1 year warranty applied which was false and misleading since refrigeration components (including specifically compressors) are covered “through” the 5th year of the warranty.

The following is from the recall website - “An electrical failure in the relay, the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.”
I never received a recall notice in the mail, so I was not aware of this.
State Farm Insurance is handling the claim, but I want to sue Maytag/Whirlpool for all my pain and suffering. I am now living in a hotel until the interior of my home is reconstructed.
