The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: LG Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

LG Refrigerator Model LFC25760ST- I noticed an unusual smell in our kitchen. Upon opening the 2 front doors of the refrigerator it was hot in the unit, the interior lights were on and the entire lamp/control assembly was burning and melting away from the top of the unit. The roof of the refrigerator was blistering. I immediately shut the power to the refrigerator off via the circuit breaker.

I did some internet research on this unit and found there is a class action suit against LG. As an LG owner I was never notified there was a potential fire hazard with the unit. As a consumer I would expect to be notified of a problem as [potentially] serious as this. I called the LG 800 service number and was informed “they know all about this problem.” The phone operator scheduled a service call to “replace the broken parts at no charge.” For what purpose I do not know as I have no intention of using this refrigerator or any other LG.

The refrigerator stinks of burned plastic as does all of the food and containers within. The unit, contents of both refrigerator and freezer are a financial loss. I am grateful we were home and awake when this event occurred and that our loss seems confined to a refrigerator and its contents.

The product, in the report: French Door Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

Discovered that refrigerator lights stay on when doors are closed. We tested by pressing the door buttons that should have turned off lights but the lights stayed on. So that means the lights were staying on when doors were closed.

The plastic light shield had warped from the heat. It kept falling off and it would not stay on. We also saw burn marks in the light sockets. We have removed the bulbs.

We contacted the manufacturer, LG Electronics, USA, by phone. LG refused to repair it and advised us to contact Sears, where we purchased the refrigerator.
