The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid French Door Refrigerator model KRFC704FPS07
My 7 month old KitchenAid refrigerator (Model: KRFC704FPS07) experienced electrical ghost-activation, beep-cycling, and tripped the household breaker, creating a severe risk of an electrical fire. Whirlpool Corporate Safety confirmed the hazard by instructing me to leave the appliance unplugged, but is refusing to provide emergency service or an interim working appliance for over a week.

No one hurt Made May 26, 2026, sent to the company Jun 3, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 17, 2026
The product, in the report: Kitchenaid French door refrigerator with lower slide out freezer door
Catastrophic wire shirt The fundamental risk associated with this product failure is a severe thermal and fire hazard, as well as the risk of smoke inhalation. The wiring harness inside the freezer door suffered an internal electrical short circuit and active arcing. This electrical malfunction generated enough intense heat to scorch the internal components and visibly melt the refrigerator’s inner plastic liner structure. Because this occurred inside an enclosed kitchen appliance surrounded by combustible materials, it presents an immediate, active household fire risk.

The product, in the report: 25.8 Cu. Ft. 36” Multi-Door Freestanding Refrigerator with Platinum Interior Design
We have a KitchenAid refrigerator (Mod: KRMF706ESS). The product has major defects that cause the freezer and refrigerator to stop functioning. Due to this defect we found all of the freezer contents thawed and melting. This can occur every couple of weeks. We do not believe we have gotten sick yet, however we have to be diligent to check the freezer and refrigerator temperatures several times a day to make sure the food is in a safe temperature range. KitchenAid has provided no service or recall to address the issues. Looking at reviews on their product page, 1134 of the total 3766 reviews are one star reviews. Many of the one star reviews show pictures of the same issue.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Counter Depth Refrigerator, four doors, two upper and two lower. Stainless steel. 69.5” H x 36” W x 28.375” D
I’m a 79-year-old consumer. The upper left door of KitchenAid refrigerator model KRQC736RPS will not stay open. It swings back and hits me in the shoulder/neck when I’m trying to add/remove items. KitchenAid sent someone to repair the refrigerator, and we had to wait for parts, which I believe was door cams. After replacing the cams, the door still will not stay open. We were informed that KitchenAid considers the product working as designed because all the mechanicals and the ice container are housed in that particular door, so it’s heavier than the other doors.

Product: KitchenAid 25.8 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator in Stainless Steel with Platinum Interior (Model Number KRMF706EBS01)
Issue: Repeated mold growth, water leakage, and potential food contamination
Summary:
This report details my experience with a faulty KitchenAid refrigerator, highlighting concerns about product safety and consumer protection. Since its purchase in 2018, the refrigerator has experienced:
Mold growth: Persistent mold appeared in the ice maker area within 3 years. This mold spread to stored fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, raising health concerns for my family. Faulty temperature control: We identified a faulty sensor related to temperature regulation as the likely cause of mold growth. Manufacturer inaction: Despite repeated attempts to address the issue through [REDACTED] (the manufacturer’s authorized service provider), the problem worsened. Additional damage: Water leakage from the fruit and dairy drawers is now damaging our wooden floors. Inadequate customer service: The manufacturer only offered a 15% discount on a new appliance despite the severity of the issue and the expired warranty. Concerns:
Health hazard: Mold contamination in food poses a serious health risk to my family and potentially other consumers. Product defect: The faulty sensor suggests a design or manufacturing flaw that may endanger other users. Poor service: The lengthy troubleshooting process and insufficient compensation demonstrate a lack of concern for consumer safety and satisfaction. Financial burden: We incurred costs for a temporary refrigerator and deep freezer due to the unusable state of the original unit. Request:
I urge the CPSC to investigate this issue and take the following actions:
Launch a formal investigation: Assess the potential health risks associated with mold growth and leakage in this model. Issue a public safety advisory: Warn consumers about the potential dangers of the KRMF706EBS01 model and instruct them on necessary precautions. Hold KitchenAid accountable: Demand a recall or repair program for affected units to ensure consumer safety. Review manufacturer practices: Assess KitchenAid’s customer service and warranty policies to ensure fairness and protect consumers from defective products. Supporting Documents:
I am attaching copies of purchase receipts, service records, photos of the mold growth and water leakage, and communications with [REDACTED] and KitchenAid.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I urge you to take immediate action to protect consumers from the dangers associated with this faulty refrigerator.

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Jan 11, 2024, sent to the company Jan 17, 2024, published by CPSC Jan 31, 2024
The product, in the report: KitchenAid five door refri
KitchenAid refrigerator has had multiple service calls for not cooling. First visit tech found nothing wrong with unit. I had to disassemble myself for them to finally come back and see that both evaporator coils were frozen over restricting fans. They started ordering and replacing parts for two months and the fridge never got down to safe operating temps. 42-50 degrees until now it completely gave out. Come to find out it has been leaking Freon into my home and possibly causing us to all get sick from it. Kitchenaid knows this is a common problem and theyre still selling this defective product along with many others alike. Since there is a leak and possibly internal the repairs are likely more than its worth so their only recommendation is to replace the fridge at my cost. The major components that have failed on the unit are covered under limited warranty but fridge is deemed unrepairable.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid 25.8 cu ft French Door Refrigerator in Black Stainless
I purchased aFrench Door (5 door model) KitchenAid refrigerator less than 4 years ago. Recently the freezer stopped freezing my products which has resulted in spoiled food. Additionally, the bottom pan filled up with water which overflowed into the kitchen floor and there is a loud humming sound coming from the freezer section. There is now ice filling up along the back panel. The technician stated that this is a known issue with this variety of refrigerator and the control panels (there are 5 of them) and thermistor need to be replaced. The parts alone are about 300-500 dollars for each control panel AND even after replacement the issue is likely to return again. Whirlpool/KitchenAid provides no resolution for their defective product and won’t issue a recall despite it being a repeated issue. The most that was offered to me was 15% off a new appliance.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator
Caller stated that the refrigerator shelves have sharp edges that caused lacerations. He stated that some of the shelves are extremely sharp, he reached in the unit to pick up an item and he cut his right arm. No medical attention was needed. Caller stated that it could have been worse because he is on blood thinners.
Caller contacted the manufacturer, and they advised him that they could not assist him because the issue he is having is not included in the warranty. He feels that this refrigerator is unsafe and should be reported.
On previous date(s) [REDACTED] had dispenser ice from the above refrigerator ice cube tray. Some ice cubes fell into the drinking glass along with what was later identified as plastic chips when taken from the mouth of [REDACTED] on a few occasions.
On 1/12/22 repair technician from [REDACTED] of Naples, Florida found the ice cube container bin had a large hole in the ice container. The ice cub bin was replaced. Defective ice bin is available for examination.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid French door fridge model KRFF507HPS02
My refrigerator ice box broke during normal use and plastic shards mixed with my ice and ended up in my cup. I didn’t realize this occurred until they were in my mouth. I was not injured but the parts are sharp and could easily have hurt someone and were small enough to ingest. I alerted KitchenAid on 3/13/23 via customer support online chat but did not receive a satisfactory explanation or response. The product was a KRFF507HPS02 French door KitchenAid fridge.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Bottom Mount Build in Refrigerator. Stainless steel. French doors on top, pull open freezer. 42” wide, 24.2 CU.
We have a Kitchenaid refrigerator (model # KBFN402ESS02) that has had consistent issues with the door in the 3 years we have lived in our house. In February, the door fell off the hinge while I was opening it. I was able to catch the door without causing injury or damage. Luckily my 3 or 5 year old was not opening the door, it would have crushed them. KitchenAid did nothing different but the same fix they had done 3x before. The same thing happened to several of my neighbors, [REDACTED] & [REDACTED]. We have had the doors fixed 4x since purchasing the fridge 3years ago by certified KitchenAid tech. There is clearly a design flaw with this fridge. Kitchenaid has not taken accountability and blames our children for “abuse” by opening the doors. However, no where on the WARNING LABEL does it say to not have children open the doors. I also went through the entire manual and there was no mention of limiting the door movement or only opening past 90 degrees to avoid potential injury.

We have a Kitchenaid Model# KRSC503ESS00 Serial# HR63909172 which came with our home when we purchased it in May of 2017. It has a defective wiring harness (flawed design at the manufacturing stage) which can create a electrical shock, fire and possibly death if the severed wires come in contact with the metal surroundings. I’ve contacted Kitchenaid/Whirlpool and notified them, they offer no resolution. Also I’ve found numerous online accounts of consumers reporting the same issue. This is not a Warranty issue its a manufacturing/engineering flaw that should have a recall and resolution! Please Help!!

The product, in the report: Kitchen aid stainless steal built in refrigerator.
Kitchen aid Refrigerator door completely fell off and came crashing to the floor when my husband simply went to open it. It was a huge crash, put a hole in our wall and the door is all dented and damaged. Thankfully he was able to jump out of the way and avoid an injury. I strongly feel if it were to hit an adult, they would be injured and it could kill a child. Thankfully it happened when our small children were asleep. ? ? We are the 3rd house in a row of 5 houses to have this happen. We are in a new construction neighborhood and all built at the same time by the same builder, with the same appliances. We all moved in within 3 months of each other. ? ? I am extremely worried that this product is going to severely hurt or kill someone. I have been in contact with kitchen aid safety and they have opened a case. I do not yet have root cause for why this happened or resolution.

I have a Kitchenaid refrigerator that is less than two years old. The ice dispenser has a “crushed ice” setting. I began using this recently and the side of the plastic housing fractured. I did not notice this until I saw small plastic pieces, and one large piece, drop out with the ice. I don’t know how long it was dispensing plastic into my beverages. It is model #KRMF606ESS01 and serial number K81115222.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid refrigerator, specifically the ice making unit inside it’s freezer
on 4/13/19 the ice maker on our KitchenAid refrigerator shorted out. Luckily we were home at the time. We had the refrigerator door open when we heard a sound as if someone was being electrocuted. Smoke immediately started coming out of the freezer thru the ‘Extend Fresh Door cooling” hole inside the refridge section. When we opened the freezer door black smoke came pouring out. By the time we ran downstairs to turn off the circuit breaker the kitchen was filled with smoke and everything in the freezer had a grey/black film on it. We have turned off the ice maker now and turned the refrigerator back on and everything else (except the icemaker) seems to be working ok.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Side by Side Model KRSC503ESS01 mfg 10/17. Stainless steel counter depth
Purchased a new Kitchen aid refrigerator on 9/22/17 and it was delivered and put into service on 10/20/17. The model number is KRSC503ESS01 mfg 10/17. The week before Thanksgiving in November of 2017 my family got deathly ill and we assumed it was the flu as the flu has been going around. Got better went on vacation and felt fine. Came home and continued to have just a day or so a week where one of us would have gastro symptoms. Then week before Christmas another major bout that we thought was flu again. January comes and still not recovered completely from this illness and found out one evening that the leftovers that were put in fridge at noon were hotter at 6pm than had they been left out all day. At same time opened veggie drawer and lettuce was frozen solid. Upon cleaning out that drawer which had never been completely empty since installation, it was discovered that the back wall had an ice sheet the entire width of the fridge and as deep as veggie drawer. This is the wall where the vent is for the air to come from freezer to fridge. Purchased thermometer and it was 50 degrees F in fridge. Called for service on a two month old fridge and repair man said “unlucky fridge”. Have comprised immune system and unable to eat out for past 17 years. Tried to get them and the retailer to swap out a defective machine and was told NO. The safety dept. at Kitchen aid for lack of better terms could care less. Fridge requires two parts one of which is backordered but they were able to locate. I am beyond belief that with something so major on something two months old they will not replace. Something needs to be done as this continual food poisoning as it was getting warmer over the time period could have caused death to me or a family member. Never have I considered in my 60 years of calling an ambulance but was very close to that on two occasions.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid french door refrigerator and freezer.
The top shelf in my Kitchen Aid freezer exploded and sent shards of tempered glass onto me and as far as 10 feet away from the appliance. There was a loud sound - like a gun shot - and then glass rained down on me. The Kitchen Aid french door refrigerator/freezer is just barely 3 years old. There had been problems with the appliance early on: first the ice make had to be replaced and then the entire front door of the freezer had to be replaced because it was determined that the door had no insulation. When I contacted the customer service department regarding the exploding shelf I was told that “stress” can make tempered glass explode. I believe that the “stress” came from improperly constructed glass or from the earlier problem of no door insulation. I asked that Kitchen Aid replace the several tempered glass shelves. They refused.

The product, in the report: Side by side refrigerator
I was watching television tonight when I heard to loud pops I went in the kitchen and family room to investigate I thought someone was banging on the wall or actually outside banging on the window . I happened to look at the bottom of my refrigerator which is a side-by-side Kitchen Aid model 2013 and noticed at the bottom of the freezer door a flame and I smelled fire. I blew the finer out and it appears the wiring harness for the freezer at the base of the refrigerator shorted out the door was closed and no one was even touching the refrigerator when this happened . I open the freezer door and noticed sparks coming from the same area at the base when I open the door as the wiring was shorting so I close the door and turn the circuit breaker off for the night so I could sleep peacefully without worrying about the house burning down . Had I not been home at the time it’s quite possible that the wiring harness could’ve melted or ignited plastic and started a fire in the kitchen which could’ve eventually cause my house to go up in flames or someone to die within it I was very lucky . Now I don’t know what to do I’m sure this will be quite expensive and I plan to call to donate tomorrow voice my serious concerns over their product and expect immediate repair or replacement. I am very concerned about this product and extremely uncomfortable even leaving it on and I have several steaks and other foods in the refrigerator that I could lose a few hundred dollars in value from this incident but again I feel lucky because it could’ve been a disaster had I not been home heard the noise smelled the smoke and seen the fire pit deal with it immediately. 9/1/2017 10:30pm

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Model KFXS25RYBLO French Door refrigerator with two-drawer crisper/freezer
Kitchen Aid refrigerator Model KFXS25RYBLO is designed to defrost automatically. Product was purchased 07/05/2011. About seven months ago the automatic defrost began to malfunction. Puddle of water would form on the floor at the base of the refrigerator. I would have to physically remove (chip) the 3/8 to 1/4 inch layer of ice away from the catch basin under the third-drawer freezer unit. Initially, this clearing process occurred about every three weeks. Currently, this clearing process has to be performed about every six-days. The malfunctioning Automatic Defrost feature has become a safety issue due to risk of slippage on the wet floor, as well as potential damage to the flooring itself.
I will be contacting the Kitchen Aid manufacturer in order to determine if this is a repairable problem.
I wanted to raise it to the CPSC as a potential safety issue and in order to determine if other consumers are experiencing similar problems with this product.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid under counter beverage center, model number KRUG24LWBS21, serial number EK12300443
My name is [REDACTED] and I am a Kitchenaid consumer. I built my executive level home in 2011 and completed our kitchen with all brand new Kitchenaid professional level appliances.
The kitchen is 6 years old in July. Three weeks ago we went on vacation and when we came home we noticed a “burnt” odor in the air and we also noticed that our under counter beverage center, model number KRUG24LWBS21, serial number EK12300443. had quit working.
We accessed the Kitchenaid repair site and scheduled a repair tech to come out and look at it. He showed us the back and all the plastic parts inside had melted from an overheating situation. This was a defective part not due to any maintenance issues with the unit. I am attaching pictures of the melted parts and “ashlike” residue that was covering the inside of the rear of the unit.
To be clear. This unit malfunctioned, and almost caught on fire. This is obviously a design issue and I believe this unit should be recalled. The drain pan and other parts should be made of metal and this unit should have a thermal protection that would shut off the power in this situation. It cost me $400.00 to repair the unit. I realize it is out of warranty and I am not looking for compensation for the repair. I was told by the repair tech that it was all okay now and safe to use the unit.
Please note, if this unit were to malfunction again and we have any damages we will certainly pursue every avenue for compensation as you now are aware of this design issue.

Our KitchenAid refrigerator caught fire on 10/10/2014. We were fortunate to be home and able to take action pulling the refrigerator out and unplugging. Fire still continued with lots of black smoke filling the room and home. I removed the lower back cardboard panel and put the fire out. Flame was still 3 plus inches with power removed. The starter solenoid on the compressor shorted and melted also melting the metal prong on the compressor and electrical wires connected to the relay.
Today a technician came out and verified the refrigerator damage and stated the relay is not wired to ground so power continues without tripping the circuit beaker resulting in fire.

He had problems sleeping because the odor just didn’t seem natural but he could find no place of origination. He arose again around 5:30, went to the refrigerator, opened the freezer and noted that the ice was melted. He unplugged the refrigerator then moved the food and drinks to a spare refrigerator and freezer.
He checked the refrigerator he noted that the compressors starting device was charred and fused to the compressor. He touched the starting device then began taking it off, however when he tried to remove it the starting device just crumbled.
Caller has not contacted the manufacturers and is not positive he will contact them. There were no injuries

Kitchen Aid refrigerator compressor relay failed and started wiring & connectors to smoke & burn. Model KSRU25FK8T01 SN SL1730558 Manuf 04/01 Have had refrigerator in continual use since originally purchased from Sears in 2001.
Discovered late at night when the faint smell of burnt wiring reached the bedroom. Strongest smell was in kitchen. Pulled refrig away from wall and noted faint smoke coming from rear grill. Looked through the cardboard grill and noted electrical arcing on compressor relay. Small flame noted in addition to arcing. Unplugged refrig and then blew out small flame. Removed grille and noted significant damage to the relay and connected wiring from overheating. Took several pictures of damaged area. Moved food into coolers and a 2nd refrigerator we have in garage.
Next day surfed internet and found several others have had the exact same problem. Purchased replacement parts from McCombs Supply Co (Lancaster, PA) and made repair per the provided instructions and guidance from various appliance repair websites.
Extremely disappointed with Whirlpool that they have not addressed this design fault and other consumer product safety orgs have not forced a manufacturer’s recall/repair. Also I don’t understand why Whirlpool did not notify owners of this failure mode. Their lack of response to this design fault and their use of a cardboard grill within inches of this area is inexcusable.

To Whom It May Concern,
Here is the information you requested for report# 20121114-80CB9-1284012
My unit is MODEL# TFX2SJRYD WW SERIAL# AS238615 Control Board# 2302865REL
I do have concerns about fire since there have been reports of this however. Would you please also include this as my major concern? People who own this model need to know this.
Thank you for your help in this matter. Have a great Holiday
[REDACTED]
I am reasonably certain that my refrigerator is unsafe and has been a health hazard to me and my family. I know there have been recalls of other unsafe refrigerators with defective motherboards. I really wonder how Whirlpooi/KitchenAid has managed to keep from addressing this very serious problem.
My unit is approximately 6 years old and I am working on my third board which just started acting up yesterday. It is two months old. Imust now prepare my family for another two weeks without food in the house. Here are the symptoms of dying control boards. You will find similar symptoms if you read other reports of this appliance in Consumer Affairs web page.
Stage one is a very loud hum for about 10 seconds. It will only occasionally do this. Stage two may not occur for weeks or months but you will notice the freezer side of you side by side start to get colder. Your control board is starting to get confused. The ice in your maker will start sticking together. It will start to freeze milk if you set the carton in the top back of the refrigerator side. Next will come a smaller constant hum which may go on for days at a time and then abruptly stop. Then start back up again. This symptom may persist for a month or more.
The last stage is the one which concerns me most. Your KitchenAid will start to slowly warm up. This last stage is not noticeable at first and may take two maybe three weeks. One day you will finally notice your food is not cold. This has happened gradually and you have probably consumed some food that could make you quite ill.
It is becoming quite obvious to me that this manufacturer cannot fix this problem without a major rework of the unit. The motherboard is being asked to perform too many functions. Ihave been told that new models now have three boards doing the work of the one in my unit.
Will Whirlpooi/KitchenAid continue to jeopardize the lives of their customers until this product cycles out of existence or fix a problem they know exists?

A repairman came today and said the capacitor compressor starter or the compressor went out. The part he removed is charded. Kitchenaid side by side refrigerator model # KSRA25KKSS2 Mfg date 1/04 Compressor - Embraco 512700159
Luckily this happened before I went to work, or more than our refrigerator could have caught fire.

The product, in the report: Built in Refrigerator
The consumer says that he started noticing the unit was getting hot to the touch. When opening the freezer door and refrigerator door he notices a vertical 3 inch divider separating the freezer and refrigerator. When his arm brushes up against the divider it was scorching hot.
He contacted the manufacturer and asked them if it was something normal. He was told that its where the defroster tubes run and not to worry about. He said that is the way it is supposed to be.
The consumer says as time has gone by the divider is getting hotter and hotter to the point that the vertical gasket that seals the freezer door has turned brown. he says the vertical plastic vinyl piece that covers the separator wall between the freezer and fridge also has brown spots in it. he says it has also developed cracks in the horizontal vinyl. He says that he called the manufacturer again this past week, they said they need to send someone out.
When he called a couple of months ago they did not offer to send someone out, they simply said do not worry about it. He asked the manufacturer to look in the records to see when it was that he called a couple of months ago. they have no record of his phone call.
A repairman came to the house and verified that the cooling fan was not working. The technician ordered a computer board. The repair expense is $450.
He contacted the manufacturer on or around 8-20-2012, who referred him to a supervisor by the name of [REDACTED] in Tennessee. He said the gasket now is so hot that if he touched it, it would burn his hand. He was informed by the manufacturer that the center vinyl piece is not serviced. He says that he talked to the company at length and he felt like they blew him off.
He has a neighbor up the street with an identical refrigerator. He has a copy of the repair order from 2010 for his neighbors unit. It says “hot edge on the wall, necessary to replace main computer service board.” He says the model for hers is [REDACTED] and serial [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid refrigerator model KBRS22KG with freezer on the bottom. Size is 21.8 cf
Kitchenaid KBRS22KG refrigerator began making a very loud noise. Over the course of a month the noise increased. Cleaning under and behind the refrigerator did not help. Finally it began to not keep the temperature properly and I pulled it out again to clean. When i did I discovered a charred, melted area by the compressor start relay area.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid counter depth free standing refrigerator / freezer, model KSBP25FJSSO1
I have a KitchenAid refrigerator/freezer with an ice and water dispenser built into the door. About two years ago the ice and water dispenser stopped working. I then called the authorized KitchenAid repair service. The responding repair technician was able to fix the problem which had to do with wiring in the door. Recently, the same problem occurred and I again called the authorized service. The technician informed me that the problem is a recurrence of the original problem, namely, the same wires are frayed and broken and now they cannot be repaired. My concern is that frayed and broken electrical wires in a refrigerator/freezer may be a dangerous condition perhaps leading to electrical shock or worse.

Compressor relay shorted and burned out. Woke up to smell of something electrical burning. Could not locate source. Called fire department and said it was the fluorescent lights. Replaced light and still had the awful smell. Had the heating system checked. Nothing there. Upon making lunches, the next morning, discovered everything in the freezer was thawed. Unplugged refrigerator, took back off and found melted, charred relay box attached to the compressor.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator Side by Side (Ice make dispenser)
Consumer stated that while his mother was using the ice dispenser a flame projected from the dispenser’s arm which lasted approximately 2 1/2 seconds before disappearing, the unit then became inoperable. There was no visible physical damages.
Consumer feels that if the gas stove had been on, an explosion would occur causing severe injuries.
Consumer had not contacted the manufacturer as yet.
Consumer is concerned that this ice dispenser is a safety hazard and should be investigated.
The attached photo shows the defect is clearly visible as the harness broke at the lower corner. Harness was either too tight, wrong cables/wires or all of the above.

The consumer says his wife came into the kitchen and she noticed black smoke. she was not able to determine where the smoke was coming from. She opened the windows and cut off the circuit breaker. He turned the power back on he noticed smoke coming from behind the refrigerator. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who sent out a representative who initially tried to charge him but then decided to repair the unit at no cost. The technician said the wires were arched and had a faulty relay switch. They offered $900 for a new unit. Ice maker was repaired previously but that was the only issue he has had.

Fire Hazard on Kitchen Aid Side by Side Refrigerator Model #KSRK22ILSS13 Serial #SR1040013 Manufacture Date: 03-04
1/15/2012 @ 0200hrs: Wife woke me up stating that there was a foul smell coming from the living/dining room and kitchen area. Knew this was electrical smoke and turned off the power from the circuit breaker not know where the possible burning was coming from. Checked outlets by touch and went up into the attic to check if there was any visible signs and smell of electrical smoke - none. Wife mentioned that the smell was stronger near the refrigerator and dishwasher. Pulled the refrigerator from the wall and pinpointed the smell coming from the bottom of the refrigerator. Original thought was that the motor might be overheating. Went through the owners manual and read that the condensation coils may need to be cleaned to keep the refrigerator from over running. Went to bed happy to know where the problem was coming from, and that an emergency phone call was not needed.
1/16/2012 @ 0900hrs: Opened the bottom rear and started to delicately vacuum the dust. Opened the front base grill to expose more of the coils and cleaned the built up dust. Thought I was good to go. Plugged the refrigerator back in and noticed a very erie orange glow to the left of the black roundish tank (the compressor?), quickly followed with fire - all happening within seconds from plugging the refrigerator back in. Quickly unplugged and blew out the flame, knew that this was not right, and researched on the internet to find out that there were many issues similar to this with the Kitchen Aid brand.
I am baffled why the Kitchen Aid brand/model numbers is not part of the expanded recall in 2009. Found out that the problem is the start relay which I removed and plan on replacing to see if this will fix the problem.

KitchenAid Refridgerator Model KFIS27CXMS Serial K025522842 Door on left side closes all of the time on you andknocks items out of your hand. Hits your shoulder or arm and things drop on your feet. Bottom Freezer drawer has moisture outside of door all of the time and water drips on the floor. I have contacted the appliance center, the manufacturer and to no avail. I purchased this in November of 2010 and have an extended warrenty. No one will assist and I believe I have a couple of issues with the refridgerator. More importantly no one should buy this model...... The door is level but closes on you. Service has come twice only to state they cannot correct a manufacturers flaw. Not sure the recourse but I spent a lot of money on a defective product.
