The product, in the report: Hisense 29.1-cu ft Standard-Depth 36-in Wide Side-by-Side Refrigerator with Ice Maker ,Water and Ice Dispenser ( Stainless steel )

I purchased a new Hisense refrigerator Approximately 2 months ago. Yesterday, I had one of the glass shelves in the freezer portion fall out of the freezer and on to my foot. After the pain subsided, i began to investigate what may have caused this. I found that either the glass shelves themselves were manufactured too small or the inside of the freezer shrunk.

Refrigerator (HRF266N6CSE1) door hinge has started to bend/sag, making the front left french door unsafe and posing a risk of breaking off and hurting a family member. This is the newer model of a previously recalled refrigerator (HRF266N6CSE) which had the exact same issue and was recalled.

The product, in the report: Product Description: The product is a Hisense brand side-by-side refrigerator, model HRS290P5FSE, purchased from Lowes in June 2025. It is a full-sized, freestanding refrigerator designed for residential kitchen use. The unit features: Color: Stainless steel exterior finish Configuration: Side-by-side doors Dimensions: Approximately 35.98” W x 33.86” D x 69.88” H (per manufacturer specifications) Capacity: 20.9 cubic feet (13.25 cu. ft. refrigerator / 7.62 cu. ft. freezer) Features: Built-in digital control panel located on the freezer door Exterior ice and water dispenser Automatic ice maker (located inside the freezer door) LED interior lighting Spill-proof glass shelves Factory-installed handles The product is marketed as ENERGY STAR certified and includes a child lock, quick cool function, and door alarm. The serial numbers for both defective units included the same batch identifier B7BHO. The manufacturing dates were April 22, 2025 and April 23, 2025, respectively.

What happened that made you want to report? In June 2025, my household purchased a Hisense side-by-side refrigerator model HRS290P5FSE from Lowes. Upon delivery and setup, the unit failed to cool properly in the refrigerator compartment. After more than 18 hours plugged in and empty, the internal temperature remained in the 50s Fahrenheit, despite the digital panel falsely displaying 34F. We verified this using multiple calibrated thermometers and confirmed food safety temperatures were never reached.

Lowes replaced the defective unit with another refrigerator of the same model and production batch (same batch number on the serial). Within the first 24 hours, the replacement refrigerator began leaking unprompted water into the ice chute and dispenser tray, even though the ice maker was off and the water had not been used. Soon after, a mechanical knocking noise began inside the unit, coming from the ice-making area. These symptoms strongly suggested a defect in the water inlet valve, sensor system, or internal cycling motor.

These are back-to-back product failures from the same manufacturer and model, with safety and reliability issues that could pose electrical risks, foodborne illness dangers, or mechanical damage due to faulty components cycling inappropriately.

What type of product(s) were being used? Hisense HRS290P5FSE 20.9 cu. ft. side-by-side refrigerator with water and ice dispenser in the door.

Who was using the product(s)? My father, a senior citizen with medical needs, and I were the primary users. The product was installed in a residential kitchen and was meant for normal home food storage and water/ice dispensing.

How were the product(s) being used? The refrigerator was installed per manufacturer instructions, leveled, connected to a water supply line, and left empty to allow the internal temperature to stabilize. The first unit failed to cool adequately. The second unit was used in the same way empty and monitored for cooling. The ice maker was never turned on, and the water dispenser had not been used, yet water pooled internally, and mechanical cycling noises began within 12 hours of installation.

Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? While there were no physical injuries, the defects posed serious risks of food spoilage, electrical hazard due to water intrusion, and possible malfunction of internal motors or fans due to repeated cycling or moisture exposure. Additionally, stress and anxiety were caused by managing appliance failures for an elderly household member on a special diet and strict medication schedule.

How did any injuries occur? No direct physical injuries occurred, but unsafe food temperatures and internal water leakage created circumstances where injury, illness, or damage could have occurred if we had not vigilantly monitored temperatures and noticed the issues early. Water in the ice chute could also have presented a shock hazard if it had reached internal electrical components.

The product, in the report: This is a Hisense 17 cu. ft refrigerator purchased in 2021 from Lowe’s. There is a similar product from this company, also sold at Lowe’s, that has been recalled for the SAME ISSUE, but when I contacted Hisense, they did not seem interested in taking immediate action to remove these from the sales floor when the same hinge issue is causing the same problem that caused the recall on the other product (here’s the link to that recall): https://www.hisense-usa.com/product-safety-recall/french-door-refrigerator-2020 Our is a Hisense 17.2-cu ft Counter-Depth Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator purchased on 1/23/21 from Lowe’s in St. Louis, Missouri (store #1055)

During normal operating procedure (opening the door) the hinge of the refrigerator door had a catastrophic failure that caused this 50-60 pound door to fall and crash to the ground with all of the door condiments inside. This narrowly missed my husband’s feet (he’s an avid runner) and could have caused serious injury or even death to someone in a wheelchair, or a child, or an elderly person. He was able to avoid serious injury because he was able to LIFT the door from the floor and move it out of the way.

The hinges on my hisense refrigerator, model HRF266N6CSE, Serial No. C2020102000017, continue to fail after being replaced on 2 separate occasions in 10 months. The hinges were initially replaced on 10/02/2023 at which time the hinge broke on the left door when my daughter opened it. The door fell off the refrigerator with no support barely missing my daughter’s feet. The hinges were again reported as bending on 05/09/2024 and were again replaced on 05/20/2024. The hinges are again failing, by bending, and need to be replaced again, as of 08/07/2024.

I have a hisene fridge. The coating on the doors is peeling and flaking off. I have toddlers in my house that crawl and this is creating an unsafe environment for them as they may ingest the coating. The manufactured is stating that the peeling of the coating is not something that they warranty. The fridge is being used in the kitchen of our house.

The product, in the report: This stainless steel skinned refrigerator has 4 French doors and a choice of how to apply the bottom 2 units (either as a freezer or refrigerator). It has a 20 Cubic Foot capacity. It was DEEPLY discounted ($1,200), which should have been a signal to me that it had problems. The upper refrigeration has standard (VERY LIMITED positioning) shelves and a bottom pull-out drawer that is the full width of the interior. The lower 2 units each have three drawers, from which the plastic wheels readily break, and the glass drawer tops have been removed after one of them broke into small pieces.

I purchased a Hisense 20 CF refrigerator Model # HQD20058SV from my local Lowe’s on 05/02/2020. It was deeply discounted, and I soon learned why. This unit has 4 French Doors and a choice of how to apply the bottom 2 units as either a freezer or refrigerator.

Problem #1: Although NOT connected to ANY water supply, significant volumes of water (i.e. 2 or more QUARTS) build up under the wide tray in the refrigeration compartment. One doesn’t see this water accumulation until the fridge starts leaking onto the floor (which in my case has been permanently warped!). The water accumulation failures started occurring 2 weeks beyond the 1-year warranty. They have continued on a monthly basis. Multiple Problems#2-5: First to break was the tilde-shaped piece of plastic that guides the upper door mullion back into a folded position. This is not just a SERIOUS nuisance, but it has recently caused food spoilage because the door looks closed (and the “open-door” sensor thinks it is too), but it’s not. Right now, the temperature in the upper unit is no remaining in the safe temperature zone, even though the unit is set for 37 degrees F. I don’t want someone else to inherit this fridge for a song! I’ve recently gotten sick from eating unbeknownst-to-me semi-spoiled foods, and wasted a LOT of money, too.
