The product, in the report: GE Monogram refrigerator model Zisb480dxa, serial number gr031563

I have a GE Monogram Refrigerator. The model number is Zisb480DXA and the serial number is GR031563. This product costs many thousands of dollars new and has had a number of repair issues that I have already paid for. I found the issue of mold when I had to pull a 700 pound refrigerator out from its enclosure in order for the GE service techs to come and fix a separate problem with the refrigerator. The fix has been completed on this separate problem but the mold is an open issue.

Condensation from a poorly engineered water line up the back of the refrigerator has created about a 4 foot tall by 1 foot wide at the top and 2 foot wide at the bottom black mold issue on the sheetrock. This mold extends slightly into my hard wood floor. This in my opinion is a health issue and a search of the web finds many others with the same problem.

There is a tech service bulletin from GE on this and the fix is to install 3 heaters on the back of the appliance to stop the condensation that causes mold.

As of this writing I have called GE and have been unsuccessful in getting GE to pay for these parts and the labor to install them, though I am waiting on one more supervisor call back. I feel that GE should be required to issue a recall on this problem and fix it at their cost.

    Thanks for your assistance.

The product, in the report: GE Monogram Refrigerator Model ZIPP360NHASS

Purchased GE Monogram Refrigerator model ZIPP360NHASS. The shelves have razor sharp points which have caused cuts to a family member’s arm. It is dangerous to simply reach into the refrigerator. We contacted customer service. They promised to send out the safer shelves ASAP (we haven’t received them yet). I find it incredible that they actually ship this product with shelves that are so obviously dangerous when they supposedly have safer replacement shelves available.

The product, in the report: GE Monogram Refrigerator

On Saturday September 28, 2014 at approximately 8 AM, I opened the door to my GE Monogram Refrigerator (purchased in November 2013). As I opened the door I heard a loud explosion! I looked around my apartment to determine the source of the sound - only to realize that it was coming from my refrigerator: The top glass shelf exploded - sending millions of particles of shattered glass all over me, my refrigerator and my apartment! As I checked my body for shards of glass - I found them on my chest, feet and hands (pain and blood indicated location - too tiny to actually see the small slivers) The blast sent glass through my kitchen, dining and living room area - all the way to my hallway Glass shards landed everywhere: in my food, in the refrigerator bins, on the shelves, on the floor and carpets; not one inch of the refrigerator was clean - all covered with specks of glass! I immediately called General Electric to get technical help for this disaster - only to learn that there is NO Emergency Hotline, NO Customer Service, NO one to contact for this EMERGENCY - because - for GE it is a weekend - and the c-suite executives do not work on weekends! The only working number for GE was to buy parts or to schedule a service call (later in the week) as NO ONE could / would even admit that an exploding glass shelf qualified as an EMERGENCY...if one shelf explodes - who is to say the others will not explode???? I am fearful that the entire refrigerator will explode. I now fearfully open the refrigerator door - protecting myself by standing behind the door as I open it! I have asked on Facebook and Twitter for someone from GE to call me - to get this LEMON of a product out of my apartment - immediately! This DISASTER follows on the heels of a disaster this summer with the ice draw...when it stopped making ice! When the repair person arrived - he said that I had to shut down the refrigerator for 48 hours and allow it to defrost. This did not appear to be an appropriate response and merely an answer to get me out-of-his way. (I have been without ice all summer)

    · Fortunately - I did NOT follow his advice for I have read online that other consumers (who did follow the instructions) had to have the technician take the entire freezer apart to fix the problem

(The GE repairman that was sent out was so incompetent that finally we called 1-800-Appliance and they figured it out in 10 minutes. It is a design flaw in the refrigerator. When we turned it off, all the built up ice in and around the ice maker would thaw and drain into the different components. When we turned it back on, it would freeze and clog everything up. The 1-800-Appliance repairman had to take apart the whole freezer to clean out the ice. The whole experience was so frustrating and GE’s customer service is horribly inept)

The product, in the report: GE side-by-side refrigerator model ZFSB23DRGSS.

I have a GE side-by-side refrigerator model ZFSB23DRGSS. Water was pooling up in the bottom of the refrigerator side. The refrigerator was running at 40F and the freezer at 0 F.

The evaporator fan motor assembly contains foam insulation, as does the beverage center duct. Both pieces of insulation were impregnated with ice and appeared to be frozen solid. Even after sitting out at room temperature, the foam wouldn’t dry out.

Additionally, the foam surrounding the evaporator fan was covered in black mold/mildew. All of these parts have been replaced, but the problem of condensation on the parting wall and high refrigerator temps persists. Although I’ve cleaned the refrigerator from the mold/mildew, I’m afraid it will return and pose health risks.

A similar issue was reported by another consumer as incident # 20120618-0EC21-2147466518.

I placed my GE Monogram refrigerator in service in December of 2006. In 2011 noticed brown rusty buildup and liquid settling on the bottom of my unit. After removing shelf I farther noticed small compartment on the back inside wall form which the rusty fluid is coming out. I the same area I also noticed presence of mold. Using the screwdriver I removed small grilled cover. Under the removed cover I uncovered heavily corroded metal plate. Condensation water on the top of extensively corroded meal/zinc plate caused it to produce brown liquid and spill all over the inside the refrigerator and on near by food. I have pictures that I would like to share with you. Since this crates serious health hazard I asked GE to either replace faulty part or the unit itself. My request was denied.

On November 12, 2011 at 1 PM GE technician arrived at my home to asses the situation. Based on a several pictures I showed, he identified faulty part but was not sure who is going to pay for labor and parts and left without repairing anything.

Several days later I contacted GE customer service and I was informed that

“In checking the service record, it states that the technician replaced a defrost drain pan on 11/12/11 at no charge.” In fact nothing got replaced at all.  The technician did not even get close to the refrigerator. he didn’t even look at the refrigerator. All he did is to look at the pictures I showed him.. Why records state that the technician replaced a defrost drain pan on 11/12/11 at no charge remains mystery. The presence of corrosion and mold inside my refrigerator crates health hazard and this is primary reason I report it to Consumer Product Safety Commission.

    Please, help.

The product, in the report: refrigerator

UPDATE: Both refrigerators have moisture problems. Both cause property and health issues for my family.

Consumer stated that her refrigerator, (GE Monogram that costs $6,000.00) started leaking from the bottom about 2 months ago, this was a refrigerator that was replaced by the company approximately 2 years ago because the same problem.

7/2011 Consumer contacted the manufacturer and a service rep was sent out to replace the mother board, however this didnot receive the problem.

9/19/11 Consumer contacted the manufacturer again and was advised another rep will be sent out. “Black Mold” was behind this built in fridge. Consumer stated that the first refrigerator caused $50,000 worth of damages to her home which was renovated by the company, however the replacement is causing similar problems and she believes that this refrigerator is a safety hazard and should be recalled.
