The product, in the report: Trio Refrigerator
Caller is reporting his two door with bottom freezer refrigerator. He states that sometime in March 2012 he noticed that when he shut his refrigerator door he could smell an odor of burning plastic. He began trying to find where the smell was originating and discovered that when he shut the door the light did not go out.
He then noticed that all of the food on the level of the light bulbs (top shelf) was warm to the touch.
He saw that the plastic covering over the lights was melting and attempted to remove the cover burning his left index finger on the tip; an injury which he treated himself. He then obtained gloves, removed the plastic cover and unscrewed the light bulb.
He began using the refrigerator with no light (no bulbs or cover), however it is extremely inconvenient for both his wife and him.
Caller contacted the manufacturer June 26th, 2012 and received response that refrigerator is out of warranty but they will send tech for base charge of $70 to appraise repair.
He would like for this repair to be preformed & completed at manufacturer expense stating that this is not an expected problem with this appliance.

No one hurt Made Dec 20, 2011, sent to the company Dec 29, 2011, published by CPSC Jan 13, 2012
The product, in the report: Bottom Freezer Refrigerator
Woke up to a hot refrigerator with melted housing unit for dome lights. Our food was hot and the whole inside smelled of burned plastic. We tested to make sure the doors had closed, and they had. The lights would not turn off, and the plastic was melting off the screws. So I had my husband unscrew the bulbs with an oven mitt, as they were on fire HOT. We had to pull off the melted plastic cover. I am still scared because those lighting units are still active.HELP!! Of course our warranty was up last year, so I knew that I could only lodge a complaint and hope that someone could help us get these dangerous units out of homes. After I contacted Sears, We were told it was Faulty wiring by the help line of Sears. Then they proceeded to disconnect us when we asked to make a recall complaint. Then after a third call, I was given the “Corporate Office’s Number”. WRONG, I was given KMart’s number. The lady there, proceeded to inform me that she was being so helpful but that I had to call [REDACTED]. When that number didn’t even work, I contacted the CPSC. Thank Goodness. I just want this dangerous thing out of my house, and a safe Fridge in it’s place. How hard is that? This thing needs to be recalled. Thank Goodness we were home. I cannot imagine what we would’ve come home to, if we went on Vacation. I WAS a fan of Sears and Kenmore until this incident. I hope my Faith in them and their quality of care will be restored with this report. I just wish they would’ve helped when I gave them more than enough chances.

First aid Made Apr 5, 2011, published by CPSC Jun 17, 2011
The product, in the report: Refrigerator
Caller & family came home around March 25, 2011, smelled burning odor and narrowed it down to his refrigerator. He is reporting that the lightbulbs in his refrigerator were not turning off when refrigerator is closed and the plastic coverings were melting and posing a fire safety hazard. Food placed anywhere near the lights was warm, never getting cool and thereby spoiling especially any milk placed nearby. Caller tried to unscrew the bulb but burned his thumb, index & middle fingers on his right hand so left alone at that time. Feeling of no fingertips remains. Caller has an electrician friend who came to his house, unplugged the refrigerator, let all cool and then removed bulbs so that caller & family can use refrigerator without fear. Caller contacted manufacturer/retailer who referred him to distributor after telling him they could charge him for parts and labor if he wanted repair. He is calling them again but would like to request that the CPSC recall these refrigerators, that manufacturer be required to repair refrigerators involved at manufacturer expense and if already repaired at caller’s expense that manufactuere be reqeired to reimburse. It took more than a few days to rid his house of the smell.
