No incident, no one hurt Made Nov 15, 2024, sent to the company Nov 21, 2024, published by CPSC Dec 6, 2024
The product, in the report: Side by Side Refrigerator with bottom freezer and icemaker unit.
We bought a condo which included a Bosch Side by Side, built in refrigerator and ice maker. The prior owner bought the unit new and never occupied it, so the refrigerator was turned on, but never used in day-to-day service. The problem I am reporting is that the ceramic water line to the ice maker has disintegrated, causing minute ceramic debris particles to flow into the water that is becoming ice. The ice is unusable and unsafe. The line is surrounded by foam insulation from the manufacturer, so it is not accessible and cannot be replaced. The disintegration of the line is a defect that was not caused by misuse. There is no access to the line and no situation of operating use of the line that could cause line to fracture and disintegrate the way it did. The problem was discovered by an independent repair technician. The problem was masked by other defects in the freezer, which included a disconnected (severed) wire that should have powered a fan in the freezer. Because the fan did not work, the ice maker never functioned because there is a temperature controller that prevents operation of the ice maker when the ambient temperature in the freezer exceeds a preset temperature. A BSH approved servicer attempted to repair the fan problem and after several unsuccessful repair attempts, declared the unit to be not serviceable. I sought a replacement of the refrigerator. Bosch advised me that the unit was out of warranty, but they would offer me $1,484.85 against the purchase of a new $9,899 replacement unit. Since the replacement unit cost and installation far exceeds BSH offer, I sought an independent repair. That repair person was able to fix the wiring issue and restore normal fan function, but then discovered that the ceramic water line was disintegrating and that it could not be replaced and represented a safety hazard as pieces broke off and flowed into the ice. We have not used the ice and so have not been injured, but anyone with this refrigerator and this problem would not know that foreign bodies are flowing into the ice and so this is a danger to consumers. I have other Bosch products, and have a Bosch refrigerator in another dwelling, and typically Bosch makes a quality product. I am confounded by how this issue happened and why this refrigerator presented with problems that neither repair person had seen in their careers.

No one hurt Made Aug 10, 2020, sent to the company Sep 1, 2020, published by CPSC Sep 16, 2020
The product, in the report: BOSCH 500 Series Freestanding Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Model B11CB50SSS/08
FIRE HAZARD -OVERHEATING: BOSCH refrigerator Model #B11CB50SSS/08, Serial Number FD951000007. Purchased 2016
Refrigerator had been working without incident. On August 4 the appliance was turned off from the fuse panel as soon as power loss occurred due to a storm. After power was restored and old food removed from the refrigerator, the refrigerator was turned on at the fuse box. After 3 hours, the refrigerator was opened to determine if cooling temperature had been reached- it was then discovered that the inside of the refrigerator was too hot to touch -the power was immediately turned off at the fuse box and the fire department called. The fire department found the inside of the refrigerator to be 148 degree Fahrenheit. The fire department checked the fuse box and other appliances and did not find any other issues or storm related damage. A licensed electrician also examined the fuse box, the all-house surge protector and refrigerator electrical outlet and all were in 100% working order. It was determined that the refrigerator motor overheated and did not shut off or give an alarm of overheating. Note that I regularly vacuum around the refrigerator so there has never been a dust build up, and the refrigerator is always used in accordance with manufactures instructions. It is a newer appliance and prior to the overheating incident had been in working order. PLEASE PURSUE THIS FINDING- IF THE OVERHEATING HAD OCCURED DURING THE NIGHT WHEN THE HOUSEHOLD WAS ASLEEP MAJOR FIRE WITH FATALITIES COULD HAVE OCCURED.

No one hurt Made Dec 20, 2012, sent to the company Jan 9, 2013, published by CPSC Jan 24, 2013
The product, in the report: Side-by-Side Refrigerator
We first smelled an electrical in the kitchen and then noticed the icemaker flap on the freezer door started opening and closing erratically. The LCD display first indicated an “E1” error and then went blank. Soon we could see a stream of smoke emitting from the top of the refrigerator/freezer. We quickly pulled out the refrigerator and unplugged it. There is a circuit board under a plastic panel on top of the refrigerator that burned and created a ½” hole in the plastic cover where the smoke was released.
