No one hurt Made Nov 9, 2024, sent to the company Nov 13, 2024, published by CPSC Nov 27, 2024
The product, in the report: Stainless steel, 21.4-cu ft., Side by side refrigerator w/icemaker, water & ice dispenser
Reason for Report:
I am filing this report due to a persistent defect with the door handles on my Amana refrigerator, model AS12175GRSO4, which poses a significant safety hazard. This issue has occurred repeatedly over several years, despite the companys knowledge and multiple replacement attempts, yet the defect remains unresolved.
What Happened:
Since purchasing my Amana model AS12175GRSO4 refrigerator, the handles have consistently developed deep cracks, particularly in the plastic component that attaches the handle to the refrigerator door. This defect has manifested multiple times, leading me to report it directly to Amana. While they initially acknowledged the issue by replacing the handles several times, each replacement has developed the same cracking problem without prolonged use. We intentionally avoid using these handles due to the known risk, opting instead to open the refrigerator from a notch at the top of the door. Despite this precaution, the handles continue to crack and deteriorate.
The plastic portion of the handle, which covers the area connecting to the door, eventually breaks down and detaches in sharp shards. The first time this happened, my daughter nearly stepped on these shards in the middle of the night, which could have caused serious injury. I have found small pieces scattered on the floor, indicating that the plastic cracks across multiple sections of the handle and can detach unpredictably. Currently, my refrigerator handles have developed severe cracks, and I am concerned that pieces may soon detach.
Safety Hazard and Companys Response:
This ongoing defect, combined with the risk of sharp plastic fragments detaching, represents a serious safety hazard, especially during night-time or low-light conditions. The company, Amana, has been made fully aware of this hazard on several occasions, yet has failed to provide a safe, long-term solution. They have refused to replace the handles further or offer any alternative design that could avoid this issue, despite my repeated requests. Their lack of action despite knowing the risk of potential harm suggests a disregard for the safety of their customers.
Although no injuries have occurred yet, the risk remains substantial, and I am filing this report in hopes of finally addressing this defective component before it leads to harm.

I feel like this product is not safe because there is no way to stop the unit from rolling. Amana refrigerator model number ASI2575GRW08. If the user is not careful opening the door the unit rolls. It’s easy to have the unit roll onto your foot. No injuries yet as I have warned everyone in the house to be extra careful when opening the refrigerator. This is an ongoing issue with the unit. I have reached out to the manufactor and they were not at all helpful.

The product, in the report: Amana Refrigerator (freezer on bottom, single refrigerator door on top)
There is a problem with the condenser. If the freezer door is opened slightly and not shut completely the refrigerator can malfunction. The consumer also said that if the condenser malfunctions on its own, this could freezer door not to shut completely. When this happens, a lot of ice can build up in the freezer within the bags of food. This also causes the refrigerator portion to stop cooling and get warm inside, which destroys her food.
Several years ago, the consumer called the firm several times about this repeated issue. On one occasion, she was able to reach a live rep. (after an extensive long hold), and she filed a report with them. However, the firm never offered to do anything for her.
The consumer said she read the owner’s manual from cover-2-cover and there is no information in the book, indicating that nothing can block the condenser or touch it. The consumer claims that the rep. (name unknown) at the firm’s Independent Living Center (in approx.. 2018) told her that they were aware of the problem, but had not done anything to address this issue.
She has lost food on several occasions. She also has problems with her sense of taste and smell. Therefore, she is at a higher risk of eating food that could possibly make her sick.
NOTE: She did not have the model and serial number available at the time of this report, but may add more details when she receives the report.

The product, in the report: COLOR: WHITE SIZE: 32 W 32 Depth 69 H
There is a chemical smell and release of a toxic substance that spread inside both the refrigerator and freezer food storage compartment areas of the unit. It became unbearable after inhaling the fumes from the same substance that mysteriously started leaking inside the fridge, for days now. It was discovered on 02/08/2015, as a rancid smell coming from inside and outside the fridge. The same thing was happening inside the freezer drawer compartment, simultaneously blowing in with the cold air climate system. The odor became overwhelming after a very short period of time, as I began removing the food from inside. Any packaged products enclosed with cardboard or thin plastic wrap was already penetrated by the same ammonia / fishy smelling aroma coming from inside and has now saturated or permeated the inside walls, drawers, everything and everywhere inside, having some kind of toxic release effect that was constantly moving fumes around. Food was now spoiled and couldn’t be eaten after opening the package and cooking it, and at that point, I knew this was rather an unusual contamination with a bitter after taste to boot. After breathing in the unknown substance for some time, while evacuating the food, it wasn’t long afterwords before my lungs were feeling heavy and then a burning sensation was felt between my esophagus and lungs. I had chewing gum inside my mouth that began to taste of rancid chemicals and the mere contact of my face with my hands from handling the contaminated product left a taste and smell that could not be easily removed, even if I attempted to use soap. Its a very nasty situation and I now know that my lungs and skin are susceptible to the spread of the unknown toxic chemicals leaking out from somewhere. I cant get near the refrigerator for long and its been unplugged. Never, have I ever experienced anything like this before with a consumer product, and the reason for giving this detailed report.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator (drip pan)
Caller stated that she discovered that her refrigerator has drip pan that is sealed into the unit and cannot be cleaned which causes mold. The pan had turned black and the ice cubes have an odor. However, someone cleaned it out for her as best as they could but the pan is not thoroughly clean. Her concern is that with this mold contantly creating in her unit is a health hazard and that the firm should be able to make these pans retrievable for cleaning.
The manufacturer was not contacted because she was informed that they were no longer in business.
Please note that all brands of newer refrigerators do not provide access to the drip pan (or let you remove it). Therefore, we do not ever have a choice. Many may be getting ill from the mold excessive humidity, & dust/dirt generated! The consumer reacted to the mold as it does make her ill & that is how she learned of the problems. The consumer’s refrigerator will be an ongoing problem as there is no way to fix it or completely clean it.

May 18th, 2012 when caller’s wife opened refrigerator door to retrieve food she noticed that unit was clicking, wasn’t cold and the food was warm. Wife alerted caller who took the panel off the back thinking if he cleaned dust away it would bounce back, however all is self contained within refrigerator. Caller and his wife researched and found that these symptoms normally track back to a relay switch and could cause fire hazards. He has unplugged the refrigerator to avoid fire. He called the manufacturer today, May 22nd, 2012, spoke with “[REDACTED]” who told him she was as high as he could speak with and that his refrigerator is not on recall and not covered by warranty. He has not scheduled repair as of this date but will need to schedule repair quickly and would like to be reimbursed at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: Amana fridge model # ATB2135HRQ serial # 10442346AT
on december 17th my amana refridgerator model #ATB2135HRQ serial #10442346AT, caught fire on the relay starter which melted the prongs on the compressor unit. I feel extremely lucky that my house did not catch on fire. I lost all the food I had in the freezer and fridge because I was not at home when this happened. I learned this from my repairman at “Ortegas” who came out on the 19th of december. He told me to call Baillios where I purchased the fridge less than 5 years ago for a replacement fridge. Baillios told me to call Maytag/whirlpool who now owns amana that they would not replace it. Maytag/whirlpool put me in touch with the safety recall team there. I called the safety recall team and was told a repairman for maytag would have to come asses the damage before anyone could do anything. Mountain Valley Appliance sent a repairman out to see about repairing the fridge. They told me they would call to see how to handle this situation and was told only repairs would be made to fridge no replacements. So I called to speak w/ someone and that person [REDACTED], hung up on me there because I wanted to speak to a supervisor. [REDACTED] at the safety recall team called me back and I put in a complaint w/ her. the recall team sent a compressor out to the repair man at mountain valley the next day. they came out and replaced the relay switch and the compressor which did not work. The next day they said the compressor was damaged in shipment. The safety recall team called and told me it was too late to do anything till after christmas. At this point I wrote to :[REDACTED] to complain about not having a fridge for my daughters’ birthday party, my holiday parties, and christmas and was told simply “sorry” we can not do anything for you except fix the fridge after christmas. With further complaining I was offered a walmart gift card of 135.00 to buy a small fridge. I have not yet received the gift card. The team sent out another compressor that I have not yet received. I have lost all the food in my fridge, lost wages from staying home to repair fridge, etc.

No one hurt Made Dec 3, 2011, sent to the company Dec 9, 2011, published by CPSC Dec 23, 2011
The product, in the report: Amana top/bottom refrigerator-freezer model ARB2557CSL in stainless steel exterior
Date: December 3, 2011
To: Consumer Product Safety commission Cc: Amana; HH Gregg Appliances
From: [REDACTED] phone: [REDACTED] email: [REDACTED] Subject: Report of problem with Amana Refrigerator (top)/Freezer (bottom) Model ARB2557CSL with a stainless steel exterior
Summary of complaint: My wife and I purchased an expensive Amana up/down refrigerator/freezer, expecting to receive excellent performance in exchange for the high initial price. After 7 years of regular use in a 2-adult household, we have discovered a possible design flaw that allows the lower hinge pin to become unscrewed during normal use, ultimately resulting in the heavy door abruptly falling to the floor. As a direct consequence, I incurred $143.44 in unreimbursed damages. When contacted, the manufacturer (Amana) was not interested in inspecting the damage, offering instead to provide a service call at my expense. The issuer of an extended warranty service (GE Service Protection Plus ) declared that the policy did not cover such events. But more importantly, this event could have caused serious injury to small children or pets, had they been in the area.
DETAILS
Purchase: On Jan 17, 2004, we bought the subject refrigerator/freezer from HH Gregg, at a cost of $2046.57, including delivery and installation. Delivery and Installation appeared to come off without a hitch. [When called about the accident in 2011, HH Gregg stated that they no longer carry Amana products.]
Accident: On October 4, 2011, when the top door was opened wide (with hand on door to control its movement), to fully access the various drawers in the body, it suddenly and unexpectedly fell from its hinges onto the floor, breaking 3 of the plastic bins in the door, and destroying some of the contents housed in those bins. I was stunned by the event, and simply stared at the door and mess on the floor for several seconds.
Upon gathering my wits, I noticed that the bottom hinge pin was also on the floor with the door, having come unscrewed from the hinge mount on the refrigerator. With difficulty, I was able to screw the pin back into the lower mount, the screw threads being undamaged, and re-mount the door. The refrigeration function appears to be performing satisfactorily at this time.
I now routinely inspect the screw mounted lower hinge pin for any evidence of it unscrewing from its mount.
Apparent cause: I can only conclude that the lower pin had become unscrewed gradually during the time I owned the refrigerator and finally dislodged from its final friction position when the door was opened wide on that date. I found the pin laying on the floor about 6 inches from the pin hole in the door, and there was no damage to the screw threads. I picked it up, noted its likely function, and screwed it back into the hinge mount on the body of the refrigerator. I then re-mounted the door, minus its contents.
Hazard: Fortunately, there were no injuries from this incident. However, had small children or pets been present in the vicinity, they could have been seriously injured when the door fell off its hinges, since the event was sudden and without warning. Adults could have also been injured, most likely with broken bones in the feet. Note that the door was full width and quite heavy.
Damage and costs: The door has a slight dent on the lower left corner in the vicinity of the hinge hole. This appears to be largely cosmetic, since once remounted, the door appears to function normally on the restored lower pin. Three bins were broken and had to be replaced at an unreimbursed cost to me of $ 98.09. A number of small jars of food items were shattered and had to be replaced at an unreimbursed cost to me of $45.35. I waited till now to report this, because the replacement bins took this long to arrive.
Respectfully, [REDACTED]
