  1. First aid

Made Dec 29, 2025, sent to the company Jan 2, 2026, published by CPSC Jan 30, 2026

The product, in the report: It is a countertop electric juicer with a stainless steel cutting disc, plastic housing, and a large pulp container. The unit operates at high speed for juicing fruits and vegetables. Purchased new and used according to manufacturer instructions.

While using my Breville juicer to juice fresh ginger root, the appliance suddenly exploded without warning. The failure was violentmetal and plastic fragments were ejected across my kitchen, striking me and causing multiple cuts and bruises. Some metal pieces were embedded in my stomach (though not deeply), and I sustained minor scarring and bruising. My children were in the kitchen at the time and could have been seriously injured. I was wearing glasses, which likely prevented permanent eye damage. The explosion created a significant mess and property damage. This occurred during normal use, following the manufacturers instructions. I have photographs documenting the injuries, the damaged juicer, and the aftermath. This incident raises serious safety concerns about the products design and integrity.

The product, in the report: Breville BJE510XL Juice Fountain Multi-Speed 900 Watt Juicer

I was using the brand new Breville BJE510XL Juice Fountain Multi-speed juicer. This was the first time that I had used it. I read all the directions, unpacked, cleaned and assembled it before the first run. There were no left over packing parts. Everything was seated correctly and the safety arm was in place. I was juicing ginger root which has about the same consistency as carrots so the machine was set on 5. Initially, I was not at all impressed with how much juice was coming from the juicer. I was using it 4-5 minutes when my wife said she smelled electrical burning. She was about 10 feet away in back of the juicer. At that time, the warning E did not appear on the LED screen. I stopped the juicer, refitted the parts. I did not smell any electrical burning smell anywhere around the juicer. I believed she smelled the ginger. I started it up again, and within half to one minute, my wife said the juicer sounded as if it were straining. As I was looking down to the LED screen again to check, the plastic filter bowl exploded with an extremely loud noise, showering me on the chest and abdomen and about a third of the kitchen with plastic shards, wire mesh shards and ginger pulp. It was fortunate that the juicer was on a low counter so my eyes were not level with the filter bowl. I sorted through the debris and collected as many pieces as I could find as well as spent 45 minutes cleaning walls, cabinets, and large appliances that were in the direct line of the explosion. I searched carefully through the pulp container and all of the dispersed pulp looking for any possible foreign body that might have been in the ginger but found no hard or metal objects other than the remnants of the micro mesh filter basket. To say the least, under the wrong circumstances, the explosion could have blinded me or caused facial damage, not to mention that the sound scared the hell out of both of us. I have reported this to the Consumer Product Safety even though you said that this was a rare event, as I feel that your product could inflict serious injury on another customer.
