The product, in the report: Westbend Hotpot Model # 53645R, 5 cup Prison Hotpot with orange ring

    Dear CPSC Representative,

Calif. Dept. of corrections and rehabilitation (CDCR) changed the hotpot we are allowed to purchase to the one above.

All of us noticed that these hotpots developed small white round deposits all over the metal base inside the pot. They’re 1/16” to about 1/4” diameter. They don’t appear like mineral deposits, which look different and were more in a layer, with it being thicker around the heating element. Vinegar will not remove them entirely, and the metal began to pit after only 2-3 uses. No food was heated, only water. We are concerned that these deposits are leaching from the metal itself, which appears to be a cheap quality. Would this cause effects on our health? Also there pits and the poor quality are causing leaks into the base. This is a fire/shock hazard. We cannot repair them, as the orange ring is a security feature which breaks if base is opened, thus custody staff would confiscate it. Some have noticed mold or mildew growing in the base, as we can’t access the insider to clean and disinfect. What would you advise? Can you obtain a hotpot and test it? We inmates have no resources other than you. Thank you so very much for your time. Sincerely, [REDACTED]
