The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Nov 18, 2016, sent to the company Nov 29, 2016, published by CPSC Dec 13, 2016

The product, in the report: Sunbeam Hot Shot water heater model 6131

I plugged in a Sunbeam Hot Shot water heater model number 6131, put in some water, and hit the start button. I turned my back on it but all of a sudden smelled an acrid smell. I turned and saw smoke coming from the device. I quickly unplugged it and moved the device to the sink in case it broke out in flame. I could feel a real hot spot on the left side of the heating chamber through the protective plastic outer cover. When I turned and looked at the device the white light that indicates the device is heating the water was not on. This was before I unplugged it

Using the Sunbeam Hot Pot Express (model # BVSBWH1001) to boil water for tea in my dorm room. When the boiled water was ready, I lifted the pot to pour the water into a tea cup and the entire pot separated into two pieces. The boiling water spilled onto my leg and foot causing significant first and second degree burns to my foot. I was driven to the emergency room where I was treated and released and now must follow up with a plastic surgeon.

Sunbeam Hot Pot leaking water through bottom of pot into electronics.

The seal around the heating element failed when hot causing almost boiling water (180F) to dribble over the wires and out the bottom of the pot.

The product, in the report: Sunbeam Electric Kettle Model SEK17, 1500W, 1.8L, White

Sunbeam Electric kettle model number SEK17 has a faulty switch. This shows up in a couple of ways.

1/ When the kettle reaches a full boil, I can hear the auto-off mechanism click ‘off’, but the electrical switch inside stays on and the kettle continues to boil in the off position.

2/ With the switch in the off position and the kettle ‘off’ I was filling the kettle with water and the internal switch went on, providing power to the kettle element, even though the external switch was still in the off position.

I believe that if left unattended, the kettle would fail to switch off, then boil dry and possibly melt down and cause a fire.

FYI - I have been using other brands and types of electric kettles for 45 years and I am very familiar with their normal operation.

The product, in the report: Sunbeam hot shot model 6131. Counter top water (for beverage) heater

My less than 8 month old Sunbeam Hot shot, model 6131, which has been used on average once per day “exploded” yesterday and spewed hot water in an arc and hot steam over a wide area. Had I not jumped aside, I would have suffered serious burns. Just to make sure it wasn’t an aberration, perhaps foolishly, I cautiously tried it a second time and it did the same thing.

The unit is unplugged and sitting on my counter and could be made available, upon request.
