The product, in the report: Oster digital electric kettle by Sunbeam products model BVST EK5967.
I have been using an Oster electric kettle daily to twice-daily for 1.5 years. In the last 1-2 months it has begun to smell like metal burning when I heat it up. I’ve inspected the base after each use and the bottom of the kettle and have never found anything to cause the burning smell. The last time I used it (2 days ago - 7/3/16) there was a hole melted/burned into the round base (the inner portion) after I heated it up to 212 degrees (the maximum temperature on the item). I’ve reported this as a fire/safety hazard to the company, however I am not sure they will follow up in an appropriate manner. I read through reviews of the same kettle on Oster’s website and saw that there are many defects in this product, but I am very concerned about other consumers who might own this item and not be aware that the burning smell is a fire risk (Oster customer support replied to someone’s report of the burning smell as something that will diminish once you start using the kettle more). The model is BVST EK5967.

The product, in the report: Oster Stainless Steel Electric Kettle Model 5965
Oster Stainless Steel Electric Kettle Model 5965. Lid must be opened to fill kettle. However, when the lid is closed, the catch does not reliably engage. If the catch is not engaged, then when hot water is being poured from the kettle, the lid can fly open and hot water flood out. This has become an ongoing problem. No one has yet been hurt, but I must retire this kettle to prevent such an event.
