The product, in the report: Hamilton Beach Compact 20 oz. / 0.6 Liter Gooseneck Electric Kettle. Model # 41045 Series # A1742ER

Defective Hamilton Beach Compact 20 oz. / 0.6 Liter Gooseneck Electric Kettle. This product trips the breaker, and appears water is getting into the electric components. This was given to me as a gift and the initial one we got had that problem after several week of use. That one was subsequently replaced with the same kettle and the second one also had the same problem after about 3 weeks of use. This is definitely a fire hazard and could have caused a fire or electrocution if the outlet was not on a GFCI breaker. The product was used properly per user manual and only once every couple days.

After having the problem with our kettle, I found numerous reviews on Amazon with exactly the same problem. There are also reviews right on the Hamilton Beach website that note the same problem

So far Hamilton Beach has not been helpful either acknowledging the problem or offering us a full refund.

The product, in the report: Electric tea kettle

In the fall, 2024, I purchased a new Hamilton Beach electric tea kettle. Last month, March 2025, I noticed that the kettle was not automatically shutting off as it is supposed to do. I just happen to find that the kettle was empty and the appliance was very hot. I emailed Hamilton Beach a few weeks ago about this safety hazard, but haven’t heard back.

The product, in the report: Hamilton Beach 1.7 Liter Glass Kettle

I purchases a Hamilton Beach 1.7L Electric Kettle for my wife to boil tea water, with an automatic shut-off as soon as the water boiled, to prevent injuries or the kettle boiling dry. At home, I filled the kettle, closed the lid, as pictured in the instruction (hearing and feeling a “click” as the lid closed), and turned on the power switch at the bottom of the kettle. After a few minutes, the water came to a boil, but the kettle would not shut itself off. I tried this sequence several times with the same result.

I returned the apparently defective kettle to the store, bought another one, tried it out at home, and had the same problem of it never shutting itself off.

I phoned the Hamilton Beach customer support number and was told I had squeeze two buttons on the top of the kettle’s lid with my thumb and middle fingers, while pressing down on the lid with my index finger to get two small plastic latches on the right and left underside of the lid to engage properly with the top rim of the glass kettle. If only one of the latches engaged, I would still feel a “click” when I closed the lid, but the auto shut-off feature would be inoperable. (None of this was explained in the instructions, which simply indicated to close the lid before turning on the power.) I tried this sequence and indeed the auto shut-off worked when the kettle began to boil!

I then explained and demonstrated the procedure to my wife. Unfortunately, my wife is in the early stages of a common condition in older people called Parkinson’s Disease. This disease causes gradual loss of sensation, muscle strength, dexterity, and agility. My wife tried to follow my instructions, squeezing the left and right buttons as she pressed the lid closed. She felt a “click” and turned on the power. the kettle began boiling slowly, then progressed to a rapid, full, rolling boil, without shutting off. Realizing her mistake, my wife reached for the lid to squeeze the buttons and push down again, so both rather than just one latch would become engaged. However her hand was quickly scalded by the very hot steam spewing out the spout and around the edges of the lid.

In retrospect, when the kettle continued boiling, it would have been safer to turn off the power switch at the bottom of the kettle than to touch anything on the lid to re-engage the auto shut-off function. However, I could imagine many others making the same mistake when the auto shut-off unexpectedly didn’t work.

I understand that the lid should be latched when the water is heating, so that very hot water does not splash out of the kettle when one is trying to pour it slowly into a cup or pot. If the kettle can “tell” when the lid is only partially latched, why not prevent the heating element from even coming on -- rather than disabling the auto shut-off safety feature?

If, for some reason, this arcane procedure must be followed to enable the auto shut-off function, it should at least be explained in the owner’s manual.

The product, in the report: Hamilton Beach 1.7L Electric Kettle - Copper 40866

I purchased a Hamilton Beach electric kettle from Target. One of the features of this product is that it turns itself off when water begins to boil. After two weeks the kettle would no longer turn itself off. I ordered a second, identical kettle and after working normally for a few days it too failed to shut down when the water boiled.

The malfunction of the product means that left unattended (as it is designed) the kettle may boil all the water away, continue to apply heat, and cause a fire.

The product, in the report: Stainless steel electric kettle. Model # 40880, series code AOISICE

In 2016 I purchased a Hamilton Beach electric kettle (model # 40880, series code A01S1CE). About 4 weeks ago I was heating about 2 cups of water and the kettle failed to shut off. Boiling water suddenly came gushing out of the spout in an arc, splashing over my kitchen counter. I immediately removed the kettle from its stand and unplugged it. Thinking that this was an anomaly I dried off the unit and waited before using it again. It continued to malfunction in the same way, so I reported the problem to Hamilton Beach. Their representative told me that no one else had reported this problem. My concern is that this product could cause serious burns from boiling water gushing out of the spout. Fortunately I was standing far enough away that I was not injured, but this product obviously has the potential to cause serious burns.

I had been using this Hamilton Beach Glass Kettle for approximately two years before it exploded into pieces on June 14, 2017. I was walking from the third floor of my apartment building to the six floor, and was transporting the kettle using a polyester basket. All of a sudden following a muffled thud, the kettle broke into pieces onto the hallway floor. The hallway had carpet floor so it is not possible for a glass to break by falling from 7 inches above the ground. My doorman had to come and clean it up in order to avoid any potential injuries.

    To Whom It May Concern:

I purchased a Hamilton Beach glass kettle from Target in Chesapeake, VA on 15 December 2016. I started using the kettle the next day.

On 02 January 2017, I used the kettle to warm up water for tea. I filled the unit to the maximum level indicated on the carafe. I waited until the unit had switched itself off. When I lifted the unit off of the base, the glass kettle exploded sending hot water and glass all over the kitchen. I received burns to my right abdomen in an area approximately 4” x 8”. Luckily, other members of my household were not injured.

I still have the original purchase receipt, original product box and most of the product pieces. I can provide pictures, more information, and product numbers upon request.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

    Sincerely, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Electric kettle

Report on dangerously defective kettle manufactured / marketed by Hamilton Beach Brands, 261 Yadkin Road, Southern Pines, NC 28387. Purchased at Meijer, Waldron Way Big Rapids, Michigan store #203, zip code 42307 on 4Aug12. Receipt number [REDACTED]. Op, 2014905. Time 17:36:58. After opening the package and filling the kettle with water, it was turned on for the first time. Water was observed leaking out from the area surrounding the electrical on/off switch. We pulled the wall plug at that point. Water on the counter also ran onto the floor. Upon calling the company at (800) 851-8900 I spoke to a woman in customer service who did not seem to be concerned. So I called back and left another message on their recording machine. A second woman received my message with interest. I insisted she inform QA and provided the model number 40894 - on the box. The bottom of the kettle has B0821CE and a sticker that says QC Pass 55. Apparently the QC criteria do not include testing in the normal condition of use or the inspector might have been electrocuted. Please confirm the company acted upon my information and determine that the cause of the problem was corrected in a timely manner. Also please investigate their decision process regarding notification of distributors and retail outlets. I was sent a UPS label for ground transportation of the defective kettle tracking number [REDACTED]. Please confirm they received the item and learn what their investigations revealed. The above is from recollection and the date below is estimated.
