The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Glass counter top electric kettle

Here is my email to the manufacturer:

I just purchased a GK-17 ViewPro 1.7L electric kettle from Bed Bath & Beyond.

I ran the 3 full kettle cleaning cycles you recommend.

The kettle never automatically shut off as it is supposed to. I let it run for multiple minutes at full boil and had to shut it off manually each time.

I tried it 3-4 more times, with varying levels of water, and still the same problem.

I finally tried it with very little water in it, perhaps 1/2”, and it shut off automatically.

Subsequently, after having done that test, it now shuts off automatically with any amount of water in it! I fixed it, inadvertently, but it makes me wonder if there is an underlying defect to be concerned about.

The date code on the bottom says 1920 B.

I supposed in a sense it passed the safety test because it did shut off with a mostly empty pot. If it never shuts off when it has a reasonable amount of water in it, then it’s just wasting energy by continuing to boil pointlessly. I do wonder if like many products, it has a “duty cycle” where it is not designed to run continuously without a resting period? If it is not designed to handle continuous running, then perhaps this is a potential safety issue all the way around.

In any case, I would suggest sharing this information with your QC and engineering department.

Cuisinart Electric Tea Kettle Model Number CPK17(DL) purchased on Amazon.com. Within the first year of use the auto shutoff feature failed twice and the kettle kept boiling until I discovered it and manually shut it off. Kettle was almost boiled dry.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp 1.7-Liter Stainless Steel Cordless Electric Kettle

The appliance in question is a Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp 1.7-Liter Stainless Steel Cordless Electric Kettle which we received as a gift in December, 2015. It has been used at least 4 times per day and almost every day since that time. The unit has an electronic temperature control module which operates a relay in the base of the unit — when operating properly, you can hear the relay click each time the controller wants power to be applied to or removed from the heating element.

For the last couple of months and with increasing frequency, the relay in our unit will get stuck in the “on” position. Regardless of the selected temperature setpoint, the unit will then heat to a boil, and if left unattended would boil dry. The controller has electronic “boil-dry protection,” but if the controller cannot power down the heating element to prevent exceeding the temperature setpoint, neither can the controller power down the heating element to prevent meltdown and potential ignition of the plastic base after boiling dry. IMHO, this “stuck” condition therefore presents a fire hazard.

Cuisinart warrants this product for three years, BUT discourages warranty claims by requiring the customer to pay not only actual shipping cost to return the defective product, but also a fixed (and probably excessive) charge for shipping the replacement to the customer.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp 1.7-Liter Stainless Steel Cordless Electric Kettle

On three separate occasions this kettle has burned me. Once, I accidentally let the edge of my knuckles hit the metal on the kettle when pouring, and this caused me to spill the boiling water over my countertop, but thankfully not on me. It caused burning to my knuckles, even though they were only in contact for a few seconds.

On a separate occasion, I was closing the top lid to refill the water and it was incredibly hot, burning my fingers when I was closing it.

Finally, just today, I was reaching for something else and accidentally had my arm touch the side of the kettle, burning me. This similar incident also happened to another member of my household.

This kettle heats up the outer metal portion too much and has the potential to easily burn skin, sometimes severely. Additionally, such high temperatures persist long after the kettle is turned off. This issue has also been addressed in multiple reviews at Amazon.
