The product, in the report: Zojirushi NS-LAC05XT
On the evening of June 17th we were using a Zojirushi NS-LAC05XT rice cooker which was placed on a plastic cutting board on top of the grating for our gas ranges (which were off and cold, as was the oven). The rice cooker exudes considerable steam and this placement allowed us to vent that steam from the house. The cooking process takes more than 30 minutes and during that time we heard a loud POP. My wife went inside to see what happened and called me saying “[REDACTED], THERE’S A FIRE!”
I had her give me a fire extinguisher and put out the fire but it was evident the rice cooker had exploded, melted the front of the cutting board into the gas grating and bowl. Shrapnel from this explosion was in the melted board as the main source of the explosion was the bottom of the rice cooker, half of which was blown out.
