The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: West Bend 87905RHT Slow Cooker/Griddle with a Large Capacity Non-stick Vessel

On May 21, 2023, I purchased a new West Bend 87905R Slow Cooker with a Large Capacity Non-stick Vessel. On the second use of the West Bend slow cooker the non-stick coating failed. After numerous emails, West Bend agreed to send a replacement on October 11, 2023. The second West Bend slow cooker malfunctioned in a similar manner during its fourth use. Clearly the product is unsafe using the current manufacturing process. I used the the West Bend slow cooker in a home kitchen setting. No direct injury occurred, but some non-stick coating was consumed from the cooking process.

The product, in the report: Westbend Oval Slow Cooker

I purchased and recently used a Westbend Oval Slow Cooker at home. I followed all of the manufacturer’s instructions and warnings for use. After a few hours I noticed that the slow cooker produced so much heat it cracked my kitchen’s granite counter top. The counter top and the contents of the cutlery draw remained very warm for several hours after I turned off and removed the cooker from the counter top.

Westbend’s product literature does not include any warnings about potential damage to the surfaces on which the slow cooker is placed. It does caution about not using the device over an electric stove.

Replacing the counter top would cost a few thousand dollars. The granite is non-flammable, but I have concerns about what would happen if someone were to use the slow cooker on surfaces that are combustible. I have contacted the manufacturer regarding this as I consider it to be a major - and costly - defect.

The product, in the report: West Bend slow cooker model # 84367 (silver) “crockery cooker”

West Bend Slow cooker Model 84367

On 11/26/17 I had prepared a full [slow cooker] full of soup to take to a family gathering. It had been cooking on high. Went to lift it up off counter and into a towel lined laundry basket sitting directly beside [slow cooker]. As I lifted it over the basket and started to lower it down, the right side handle broke causing half the soup to mostly spill into the basket saving me from getting badly burned. Some did splash on my arms and clothing, but under other circumstances this could have had disastrous results. This [slow cooker] has gotten light use and always has been taken care of. I was shocked when this happened.
