The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Hamilton Beach 5 qt slow cooker (requires the use of a rubber band)

I purchased a hamilton beach 5 qt slow cooker in december of 2010 from walmart. This particular product requires the use of a rubberband stretched from handle to handle in order for the lid to have a tight seal around the ceramic cooker. If you remove the rubber band, it is impossible to put it back on without receiving severe burns. It is also impossible to remove the rubberband without burning yourself to serve the food from it. I have tried using oven mitts but they are so big and bulky, you cannot get the rubber band off wearing these.

The first time i used it, I burned my fingers attempting to remove the rubber band. Because of this incident, I have only used it a few times. I just recently used it tonight and I received a severe burn to the tip of my left ring finger.

This product is poorly designed. I have owned slow cookers in the past that did not require the use of a rubber band.

This product needs to be recalled. There is no way to use this slow cooker without receiving burns to your hands or fingers because the rubber band traps the ceramic cooker into the main cooker.

I will be emailing hamilton beach to demand a replacement.
