No one hurt Made Oct 18, 2023, sent to the company Nov 9, 2023, published by CPSC Nov 27, 2023
The product, in the report: 2 quart, slow cooker
10/18/2023: The bend in the plug wire is fairly tight and located underneath the pot. Therefore, the pot, along with the 3 legs, rest on the wire. The consumer said that the wire should protrude from the side of the pot.
The consumer heard a popping sound and his son saw sparks emitting from the wires of the pot. They turned the pot off immediately and unplugged it.
At the time of the incident, the slow cooker had been in use for 3-1/2 hours, on the low setting. The pot only has a “low” and a “high” setting. It also does not have a time.
Same day, the consumer called the product manufacturer and reported the incident to them. Their rep. suggested that he contact the dealer and ask if they would replace it or provide a refund.

The product, in the report: Rival Crock-Pot Model# 3735
Rival Crock-Pot Model #3735 I received a slow-cooker as a gift and when it was used the cord had incidentally contacted the ceramic insert portion and completely melted the insulation to bare wire. As such, the product is completely not serviceable. I am shocked! The cord is clearly marked with a rating for only 105 degrees C.; which, in my professional opinion is well below an acceptable margin of safety for an appliance that is intended to be left running for prolonged periods of time at temperatures often exceeding the cord’s specifications. Remit remedies ASAP!

The product, in the report: Rival Crock-Pot model #3040
We have a Rival Slow Cooker Model #3040 with a date code of 4202 which my sister was carrying into the house New Years Eve last month. She got about half way from the car to the house and the handles broke. She was carrying it correctly, but nearly got burned when the handles broke. I went to the Rival recall site and was notified that our model was not part of the recall. This was very disturbing to me as the recall was for the handles breaking and people getting injured. We were fortunate this time and now we have a broken crock pot and they want $19.00 for each handle. What a rip. Their product breaks and it costs me almost the price of a new one to fix mine. I notified Rival and told them much of what I have written here to no avail. Among our family (12 Children) we have more than 20 slow cookers and this incident tells me not to get another Rival.

The product, in the report: Crock-Port
The crock pot was on the high setting for approximately 90 minutes, when the glass lid shattered suddenly. There were no injuries and damages were limited to the lid itself.
The consumer has never had any prior incidents with the crock pot. The crock pot was used approximately twice a year. The consumer discarded the crock-pot into the trash.
3/19/2019: The consumer contact the manufacturer and informed them about the incident.
She later received a response from the firm that they had received her information, but nothing else transpired.
The consumer said that this had the potential to cause substantial injuries.
Since the pot was discarded, the model & serial information was not available.

The product, in the report: Rival 7qt slow cooker sold by Walmart
I got the rival slow cooker model rv-700bl as a Christmas gift a few years back & it’s never worked correctly, more intermittently. I have a small family, so we don’t use such a large slow cooker offen. In the past, I have tried contacting Walmart as their number was on bottom tag along with model number) and they won’t address it, so I called rival & they won’t help either. Last week I tried using it again and it worked for a little while than blew my electrical breaker. Today I tried calling both companies again to no avail. So I took the item a part. What I found was the red wire was never correctly but attached to slow cooker. The red wire looks brand new as it had never been properly attached. I took a picture of it & if I can find a place to add to complaint , I will add the picture.

The product, in the report: Rival crock pot model 3060
On 12/09/2017, I had finished cooking stuffed bell peppers in my Rival Crock Pot model 3060. Approximately an hour later I washed the glass lid, dried it and placed it on the kitchen counter because the ceramic was still soaking in the dishwater. 30 minutes later I heard a loud pop coming from the kitchen. I discovered a completely shattered crock pot lid.

The product, in the report: White crock pot, large oval shaped, and has colorful pictures of vegetables around the outside.
I was making chili in my Rival Crock Pot (Model 5070) and I had been cooking it for a couple of hours. Suddenly I heard a loud pop! I saw that the lid had cracked into many pieces. Looked like the way a windshield shatters. The pieces were small, about a little less than a half in inch square. There were also a few thin shards on the top of the crock pot. I was not cut, but what if this had happened when I was stirring the chili with the lid in my hand? Of course I had to throw out all that chili and start over in my smaller pot. I was not aware that this could happen, then I looked it up on the web and found that there have been 20 or so other cases. This is a really dangerous problem. When my husband was truing to help me clean it up, a lot of the glass wound up on the counter and the floor! What a mess. If I had small children around or a little dog they could have been cut.

I was cooking with my crock pot which had been cooking for 6 hours. I went to removed the lid when the food was completed. The plastic handle separated from the glass attachment. I went to grab the lid before it fell on my foot and I scalded my hand in doing so. I immediately called Rival Crockpot and informed them what happened. I spoke to a [REDACTED] the supervisor. She was not sympathetic at all to what happened. She told me she was unable to talk to me about this injury until she had the pot returned to them for evaluation. I immediately sent her pictures via email the night the injury occurred, of my scalded hand and crock pot I mailed the crockpot back to them and they received it on 3/30/15. I have called 7 times and each time [REDACTED] never returned my calls. I finally received a return call when I left a message that I was calling the Dept. of Consumer Affairs. [REDACTED] made multiple excuses (deaths in her family) for no return calls. She then stated that there was still no resolution to the claim and they would not be taking any responsibility for this injury. I demanded my crock pot be returned to me and never has been. It is my crock pot and I would like it back.

The product, in the report: Rival Crock Pot Slow Cooker, silver and black base, black inner ceramic bowl
My Rival slow cooker’s handle broke off as I was picking it up. I thought there had been a recall and looked it up online. The recall was for the same model of my slow cooker 3040 but a different “week” of production. The numbers on the plug are Y4104. The numbers around it have been recalled, but not mine. WHY?? It has the same issue as was reported. The screws sticking get crazy hot when using it and it is a hazard.

The product, in the report: Rival Slow cooker white in color with whit plastic handles on each side. Glass Lid with with white plastic handle. Cooker is decorated with green and red vegetables/fruit.
I have a Rival model 37601 Slow cooker. I picked up the cooker full of hot chili to place in a carry bag designed for slow cookers. As I was lowering it into the bag, the left handle broke off causing the cooker to fall approximately 4 inches. While my left hand received a minor burn, I was fortunate the handle didn’t break a second or two before where I could have been seriously burned. I checked the right handle and noticed it had a crack and could have also broken. This is a serious defect and needs to be changed/ corrected for the safety of the consumer. I know other models have been recalled but this model also should be recalled.

The product, in the report: Holmes/Rival slow cooker
The exteriors of the Holmes group slow cookers become dangerously hot - I seared my fingers when I reached for the pot to pull it towards me to check on the progress of the food I was cooking. These things are often used in schools and other places where they are placed on tables at children’s level - any child could reach out and burn their hands. They are unsafe by design for children AND adults. There should be a requirement to insulate the outer skin so that it does not get hot enough to sear hands. The company admits that ALL of its crock pots suffer from the same design problem:
Question: I received a Rival crock pot as a gift, and the exterior gets so hot that it causes severe blistering burns. It is model 3656. Could this be a defective crock pot? I am afraid to use it, and won’t because I am afraid my 4 year old could reach up and touch it when it is on and suffer the same blistering burns I got from it. Do you have replacements? The ceramic bowl is fine - it is just the outside which I assumed would be insulated to prevent such terrible burns.
From: HolmesService <HolmesService@speedymail.com> To: [REDACTED] Subject: Re: Question from www.holmesproducts.com [#[REDACTED]] Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2007 19:54:08 +0000 (GMT) Hello [REDACTED], All of our slow cookers have a limited 1 year as described on the back page of the owner’s manual. It is not uncommon for the outer pot to get very hot. The reason is that the heating element is wrapped around the outer shell. We do recommend that any of the slow cooker be used not within the reach of small children. [REDACTED] Jarden Consumer Solutions From: [REDACTED] Date: 8/6/2007 8:13:20 PM To: HolmesService@speedymail.com Subject: Re: Question from www.holmesproducts.com [#[REDACTED]]
Obviously, then, the problem has nothing to do with the warranty - it is a defect in design if they all get blistering hot. Warranty or not, I was injured...the tips of 3 of my fingers were seared white by your crockpot, and it took weeks for the blisters to finally form, break, and heal. Perhaps your warning should say it should not be used within the reach of ANYONE, and should only be used with oven mitts because the exterior of the crock pot gets as hot as the burners on an electric stove? The product, in the report: Rival 2 qt slow cooker - model md-yhj20dw date code 1037
Was using rival 2 qt slow cooker on low temp when the lid exploded. Glass shattered and went everywhere into the product and out -- lost the product I was cooking. I sent e-mail to Rival and they told me to contact 866-321-9509 which turned out to be Walmart -- they told me they could send me a replacement lid, but i told them i threw the whole thing in the trash -- i wasn’t going to use it again -- it couldn’t have been the lid that was defective -- it has to be the unit -- so what good would a new lid do me? it could just explode again -- not taking that chance -- so they then told me i could contact you and report it. No one seems to care do they?

The product, in the report: Rival Crock-Pot slow cooker. Model 38501. White.
The plastic handle on the glass lid of my Rival Crock-Pot (model 38501) broke while lifting the lid off of the crock-pot during cooking. This caused the glass lid to be dropped back onto the stone base of the crock-pot. In order to open the lid a utensil was needed to pry the lid off of the crock-pot which exposed the consumer to the steam inside the crock-pot. The breaking handle appears to present a risk of cuts by broken glass and burns.
There are multiple reports of these handles breaking on the internet across multiple models of Rival Crock-Pots. This web site is a good example of other consumer’s experiences http://www.fixya.com/support/t264593-need_plastic_handle_rival_crockpot_lid

Last Saturday, 6/30/12, my husband (and LTC in the US Army) was severly burned while lifting a Rival Crock Pot. The handle broke from the side and the scolding juice poured over his left hand as he guided it back onto the counter. Had he not gotten it back to the counter it would’ve hit the ground and burnt more of his body and probably any other people in the kitchen. He has now suffered for 4 days from 2 degree burns.
I have tried to upload many pics, but was told that my file is not supported.

The product, in the report: Rival Crock-Pot Model 3040 Stainless Steel
I have a Rival Crock-Pot Model 3040 that has plastic handles that have failed. There are tiny hairline cracks throughout both handles and one chunk broke off of the left side handle while moving the unit. No injury occurred, but hot liquid/food could have been spilled/dropped due to the failing handles. I contacted the manufacturer and they said I should expect that to happen over time. I see that there are many reports about similar issues in your report history.

The product, in the report: Rival Crock-Pot Model 37601 Slow Cooker Made in China ‘DHP 4503’ also printed on bottom.White enamel painted metal base with cherries and red checked design. White plastic side loop handles, white plastic control knob with Off, Low, High, Warm settings. Glass lid with white plastic loop knob glued to metal nut with screw going through lid.
Rival Crockpot model 37601 plastic handle on glass lid broke off and I dropped lid back onto stoneware insert. Neither insert nor glass lid broke, but lid was hot and burned my fingers when I tried to catch it after handle broke off. Also the plastic handles on the sides of the metal base are cracked and I’m afraid that they, too, will break off if base is lifted with full stoneware insert inside. This is the 2nd Rival Crockpot that I have had problems with handles. The other one Rival Crockpot model 5445 was recalled, so I was able to get a replacement base after the handles broke off. One side completely broke off and the other side cracked. The control knob on the front of 5445 also cracked and broke off on the 5445 and the decals on the stainless steel base indicating heat settings washed off when wiped with a cloth with dish soap. I don’t understand why the model 37601 has not been recalled since the problems are not only with the side handles, but the lid handle as well.

The product, in the report: Rival Crock Pot Stoneware electric Slow Cooker. White ceramic insert pot
Rival Crock Pot recalled my Crock pot due to breaking of the plastic handle, spilling contents and scalding users. This was about two to three years ago. I cut the plug end off and sent in to Rival , who sent me a replacement pot. This week on using the replacement pot, I noticed the plastic handle was cracked again. I checked the recall list, and found that my replacement pot was also on the recall list too. This is bad business to replace a defective product with another defective product that can create the same problem! I am curious how many other unsuspecting customers were sent a defective replacement crock pot? Model number 3735 date Y 2504

The product, in the report: 2 QUART SLOW COOKER
This is a very toxic product. As instructions said, I plugged it in with 2 cups water, and noticed a strange smell coming from it. I decided to do this a second time to see if the smell went away..it was stronger and the smell made me dizzy and my lungs are also affected just by the small sniff I took to check it. 20 minutes later I had a headache also and am still dizzy. I am not only concerned for myself, I am concerned for others who may not realize how toxic the substances in this product are. This is extremely dangerous and consumers need to be warned. I bought it at Walmart and have contacted them also.

The product, in the report: Rival slow cooker model SCV601, date code X264DH, stainless base, enameled pot
My Rival slow cooker, model SCV 601, date code X364DH, has had both its plastic handles on the base of the pot crumble, exposing sharp screws which become hot when the pot is used. The screws cannot be accessed from the back to remove them.
The hazard is being cut by the sharp screws and/or being burned by the screws if the pot is plugged in.
I called customer service, and the apologetic rep said the unit was no longer under warranty, but she could offer 15% off a replacement pot. No replacement parts are available.
Similar failures have resulted in a recall, with replacement of the base unit, regardless of the age. (http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml05/05236.html ) This recall should be expanded to include this unit. The hazard for this uncovered unit is the same as the hazard described in the recall. There are multiple reports of similar failures (search this model number on google).

The product, in the report: Electric crockpot slow cooker
We purchased a “Rival” crockpot, model SCE600.
Surface temperature of metal cooking pot (porcelain pot sits inside it, partially) was measured between 145F - 210F (using FLIR infrared B50 camera).
This crockpot is EXTREMELY dangerous due to scalding surface temperatures and should be RECALLED immediately, in my opinion.
For reference, hot water temperatures by coded are regulated to approximately 120F - 125F in most cities. I have nearly scalded myself several times and I also am concerned about how much money is wasted in heat loss (takes longer to cook the food when most heat is being lost through the jacket).
Why is there no insulation around this crockpot heater?! (Interior insulation).

First aid Made Aug 9, 2011, published by CPSC Aug 30, 2011
The product, in the report: Rival stoneware slow cooker, aka “crock pot.” Metal exterior painted yellow with flower motif. Dark blue plastic loop handles. Removable dark blue stoneware food container. Round glass lid with dark blue handle in the center and polished metal rim. Temperature selector dial with four positions, Off, Low, High, Warm.
The Rival model SCR509 slow cooker (aka “Crock Pot”) was filled with spaghetti sauce which had been cooking on the “high” heat setting for about four hours, and had reached full temperature.
Upon lifting the lid to stir the contents, the handle in the center of the lid separated from the lid without warning causing the lid, which was being held in one hand above the cooker, to fall uncontrollably down onto the top of the cooker and into the hot spaghetti sauce. This caused the hot oily liquid to splash across the surrounding area and onto my uncovered forearm and clothing. The lid then continued to fall from the top of the cooker and fell into the adjacent sink. It could not be stopped because it was too hot to touch with bare hands and covered with hot liquid.
Hot spaghetti sauce landing on my forearm caused first degree burns with blistering on the inside of the right forearm about three inches below the elbow, and minor burns on my chest where the hot liquid splashed onto my shirt. The glass lid sustained a dent to the metal rim with no obvious glass breakage.
The cooker was immediately unplugged, and the food being prepared was disposed of after it cooled to room temperature because I could not determine with certainty that none of the broken plastic from the lid handle or any other parts had fallen into the food.
The lid handle is made of plastic which appears to have become brittle allowing a metal nut which is embedded in the plastic to separate from the handle. A metal machine screw fits through a hole in the center of the glass lid and into the metal nut and holds the handle and lid together.
