  1. No one hurt

Made Aug 4, 2011, published by CPSC Sep 15, 2011

The product, in the report: 1.65 cubic foot/1000 watt Microwave

Tappan Microwave purchase one and a half years ago caught fire. Microwave was on a discontinued or clearance table when purchased.

Caller kept smelling an odor like burning plastic throughout an approximate 10AM to 6PM day but couldn’t narrow down to a source.

Around 6PM she noticed that the house was filling with smoke very quickly and then that her microwave had burst into flames.

Flames approximately one and a half to two inches high were coming from the vents on the side.

Caller had her 9 month old grandson and her 5yr old grandson who has Autism in the house so took them outside to get them away from the flames and calm the 5yr old while her husband smothered the flames.

Caller’s husband said he believes that the electronic module is in front of the panel that caught fire may be the source.
