The product, in the report: Sharp 24 inch built-in smart microwave convection drawer.
Our Sharp microwave oven drawer that is less than two years old began to run and cook, and then became non-responsive while continuing to run. It did this while food was in it. I could not stop it, and could not open the drawer. The only way to stop this built in unit from running was to access behind the unit and unplug it. After attempting to reboot it, it continued to have similar erratic and unusual functions. It risked fire an overheating or burning out the magnetron.

No incident, no one hurt Made Mar 2, 2026, sent to the company Mar 5, 2026, published by CPSC Mar 19, 2026
The product, in the report: It is a Sharp 2.2 cu. ft. 1200W Stainless Steel Countertop Microwave Oven. The model is SMC2265KS. The serial number is M24Z14 18080. It was purchased from Lowes in May 2025.
I was making a cake based treat in my microwave that I make regularly. I went out side for 10 minutes to do some yard work. When I reentered the house, it was completely filled with smoke to the point it was hard to breathe. I raced around the house for 2-3 minutes trying to figure out what was on fire, before I discovered the microwave had overheated and failed to shut off. Microwaves have safety features that would never let a microwave get to this point and would shut off. MINE DID NOT. It got so hot it melted the plastic insert the tray sits on and the tray fused to the insert. The inside is destroyed. I immediately unplugged the unit and got it out of the house. Opened all the windows and put fans around to clear the smoke. I opened a claim with Sharp, case number [REDACTED], on a warranty claim as it’s within it’s 1 year warranty. Sharp took 5 days to “evaluate” and has claimed I made the cake wrong and they are denying my claim. Ludicrous. They nearly burned down my house and tell me their product’s failure was because I was making a cake treat, I’ve made dozens of times before, caused the microwave’s failure.

No one hurt Made Jan 26, 2026, sent to the company Feb 9, 2026, published by CPSC Feb 24, 2026
The product, in the report: Sharp microwave drawer, 24 inch, 1.2 cubic ft
While the microwave was in normal operation, it spontaneously malfunctioned and caught fire. There were visible sparks, smoke, and melted plastic rising from inside the unit. The sparks and smoke originated from within the cooking compartment, specifically from the side area above where food is placed.
At the time of the incident, we were reheating approximately one cup of pasta in a microwave-safe bowl. The microwave was set to regular high mode and had been running for less than one minute when the event occurred. There was no misuse, no metal, no oversized load, and no deviation from standard, intended use.
Upon observing the sparks and smoke, I immediately unplugged the microwave and used a wet dishcloth to extinguish the combustible material. Thankfully, there were no physical injuries, and property damage was limited to the dish towel used to stop the fire. However, this outcome was due solely to immediate intervention; the situation presented a clear and serious fire and safety hazard.
My son, my husband, and I witnessed the incident. The microwave drawer is installed in a cabinet designed specifically for a built-in microwave and was installed by a professional contractor. The unit was used and maintained appropriately at all times.
This incident was clearly the result of a faulty product. A household microwave should never emit sparks, smoke, or melting internal components during routine reheating, nor should it pose a fire risk to consumers using it exactly as intended.

No one hurt Made Aug 30, 2024, sent to the company Sep 9, 2024, published by CPSC Sep 23, 2024
The product, in the report: Sharp Carousel Black Stainless Countertop Microwave Oven SMC1452CH 1.4 cu ft 1100watts
SHARP SMC1452CH Carousel 1.4cuft 1100 watt Microwave purchased mid-2020 from Lowes. Home Improvement. At least twice in past year magnetron continues to operate and heat food after timer stops after turntable stops and after interior light goes out creating risk of fire if user is unaware of continued heating in the dark microwave or has left the area.
Microwave was set on half power and 4mins to reheat 2nd portion of pre-packaged cardboard tray of [REDACTED] chicken cobbler. Saran Wrap was over unsealed original clear food covering and cardboard tray. Started micro left area for 9 mins and returned to micro still buzzing loudly, timer had stopped, time of day displayed and interior was dark. This time was able to take video of magnetron buzzing, dark interior and pressing keypad STOP button several times without result. Video also shows door opening with Saran Wrap covering raised by steam at 3inch height over food tray with lots of steam and/or smoke rolling out of micro. Photo of food tray shows original clear cover and sticker melted away/ burned off due to heating malfunction. Not in video: Closing the door caused the magnetron buzzing to restart yet keypad had not been pressed, interior was dark and turntable did not rotate. Interior bulb lights normally before and after malfunction.
Micro must be unplugged and wait couple mins so the keypad functions again. It appears the internal electronics and/or door latch malfunction intermittently.
Second issue: Since purchased new in 2020 the micro door is difficult to pull open as the latch is very tight. Latch is so tight the microwave pulls forward an inch or so each time door handle is pulled. This creates risk of burns due to spills when a heated liquid is inside micro.

The product, in the report: Sharp microwave
I was defrosting a steak and it was done and the timer read 0.0. I had to leave for about 20 minutes and before I left the steak was cold. I had shut the door on the microwave and when I came back the steak was cooked and completely ruined. I couldnt believe this happened so I ran an experiment. I filled a ceramic mug with water and measured the temperature and then put the cup in the microwave for a few minutes. I didnt punch any buttons and the display read 0.0. The water was 72 degrees before I put it in the microwave and after a few minutes it was 140F. I understand that there is an interlock to prevent this from happening but it did. The microwave was on and heating water when it was off with the door shut.

Turned on microwave for 30 seconds to melt chocolate chips in a microwave safe glass bowl. Within a few seconds it made a lot of noise - buzzing, grinding, arcing. No one hurt Made Jul 20, 2022, sent to the company Jul 25, 2022, published by CPSC Aug 8, 2022
The product, in the report: Sharp Carousel microwave oven, white. Model number R-459YW. Serial number D530030087.
For several years, I’ve used my Sharp R-459YW microwave oven to heat up soup, make popcorn, heat frozen meals, etc. On July, 15, 2022, I had just heated soup. After that, I attempted to make microwave popcorn. About one minute into the process, I smelled a burnt electronics smell and heard a crackling “static” sound. I approached the front of the microwave oven and saw the interior light flickering as the crackle continued. So, I stopped the cooking process and looked inside. Smoke drifted out after the door was opened. On the right wall of the interior, there was a charred burn mark to the top. The wall looked melted in one area. There was a strong burnt electronic smell, too. Fearing a fire hazard, I unplugged the unit.
I believe if the cooking proceeded unattended, the oven would have caught fire. No fuse or other protection was triggered before I stopped the cooking.

On 99-15-20 we used our microwave to heat some leftovers. A half hour later I went back to the alcove where the microwave is located and it was running again, with zeroes for time on the display. I tried all the buttons and the only way it would shut off was to open the door or unplug the unit. To me this constitutes a fire hazard if something is left in the microwave and it runs a long time. I contacted Sharp about the problem and they claim there are no recalls and they don’t have a remedy for me. The case number is [REDACTED] and I was told someone would call but no one has as of now. My Sharp microwave model R-308HK has melted plastic near the LCD readout on the outer surface of the microwave covering. I am witnessing a burn smell from the inside of the microwave. I don’t know whether to use it or not. It is still working. We used it for 25 seconds when we witnessed a burning smell inside. We just heated a cup of coffee for 20 seconds and there is no smell now. I feel this microwave is a trap for consumers with a risk for fire because some consumers may continue using this product after burn smell because they might think their smell came from the food and it isn’t.

Suddenly there was a strange noise and the microwave stopped working and the display panel went dark. Shortly thereafter my wife noticed smoke issuing from the top of the microwave near the display. I went and turned the power off at the breaker (it had not been tripped by the incident). Even with no power to the unit the smoke continued to increase. When it was obvious that there was a fire inside the unit, I unscrewed it from the cabinet and with my wife’s help we carried the unit out onto an outside concrete porch. Smoke continued to increase in volume and it was apparent that the fire was still active and increasing in intensity. With the aid of a power driver I was able to unscrew all the cabinet cover retaining screws and slide the cover off. The back of the microwave area was in flames. I extinguished the flames with a garden hose and waited for the unit to cool down before inspecting it. I do have video of the unit smoking while on the patio and my wife got video of the flames and burned up electrical connections. I was unable to upload the video since the “add files” was not working.

The product, in the report: Sharp R-451ZS Carousel microwave
We bought a new home and moved in a week ago. The builder supplied the appliances that included a Sharp R-451ZS Carousel microwave. We used the microwave on 06/18/17 a couple of times and it worked fine. Then we tried to use it for microwave popcorn and pressed the popcorn button and about a minute in, it started making a strange noise and sparking and smoking. We turned it off and I notified the builder of the issue. They brought another microwave the next day 06/19/17 and sent an electrician out to check the outlets and they are fine. We used it once and it was fine, then tried using it for popcorn later that night and it started sparking and caught fire. I notified the builder again and they brought another one the next day 06/20/17. They tested it by making popcorn and it worked fine. Later that night, I tried to make some popcorn and it started sparking and caught fire. Three new Sharp R-451ZS Carousel microwaves have caught fire over the last three days while trying to make microwave popcorn.

The product, in the report: Sharp Microwave model KB6524PS drawer oven
Sharp Microwave oven model KB6524PS caused much smoke during normal use. The unit is 3 years old and I had called Sharp within 4 months of purchasing to report loud humming that would happen randomly. I was advised that this happens from time to time and that it was normal and not a warrantable condition.
The noise has been becoming more frequent and recently the noise is present with smoke now that fills my kitchen. I called the help line and they said that this happens from time to time and that it is not something to worry about.
I would like everyone to know that you should not do business with this company. Any company that gives out advice or does not care that their product is probably going to either catch fire internally or cause excessive smoke is not good for consumers.
There is another complaint on here that the company responded to and claimed that there was never a safety issue since the fire/short circuit was contained within the unit...That’s the equivalent of saying, “Hey, our jet aircraft engines have a high degree of failure so when they do fail, the problem is contained within the unit so know one gets hurt”.
Consumers can be the judge of this one...These are the facts and anyone who has one of these units knows exactly that what is described here is the truth.

1/13/17 bought a sharp model R-551ZM microwave. it worked great! for about 2 weeks. 1/31/17 i heated 1 cup of coffee, and it went well. when i tried to heat a second cup, immediately after the first, the interior light did not come on, and the front control panel was not lit. i smelled something that was electrical, maybe melting plastic... you know it when you smell it. my brother took it out of the cabinet and i unplugged it, then plugged it back in. it instantly got hot in his hands, on one side and the bottom. too hot to hold. we unplugged it and returned it that day, to sam’s club. brought home the same model and used it for about 10 days. the same thing happened yesterday. the exact same thing!!! i was home alone with my 75 year old mother. i was able to get it out of the cabinet and it was too hot to touch on the side that is behind the control panel. we plan to take it back to sam’s club, but they didn’t really care that there is a problem. i called sharp, too, and they didn’t seem to care. told me to call back and ask for customer satisfaction. i would be satisfied if i didn’t feel like i was going to burn to death. i would have a hard time trying to get my disabled mother out, if this thing starts a fire.
this happens to one unit, it’s bad luck. it happens two times within two weeks, there is a problem with the manufacturing of this device. the date of manufacture, on each, is oct 2016.

The product, in the report: counter top microwave Date manufactured: April 2014.
The consumer set the microwave for 2 minute and approximately 10 seconds later the consumer noticed the power to the microwave flickering then going out. When the consumer wiggled the power cord, it would come back on for a short time. The consumer then smelled a burning plastic smell. He opened the cover and noticed a wire melted. He contacted the firm and they were not interested in helping because he opened the cover. They also advised him that the microwave was out of warranty.
The consumer indicated that he was very alarmed at the burning melted wire. The consumer’s children use this microwave and he is happy that no one was hurt. He believes an appliance should not do this and he would appreciate this being investigated to prevent any possible fires.
There are no prior incidents.
The microwave is used daily.

The product, in the report: SHARP microwave oven, model R-1214-T, FCC ID APYDMR0159, serial 515712
I plugged in a brand new Sharp microwave and turned it on to make sure it actually worked before mounting it to the wall. It immediately began smoking, thick grey plumes coming out of it. Then my husband googled it and there are several reports of this model (R-1214-T) catching on fire and/or smoking. This was 3 years old, but had never been used. It was stored inside of our house in the basement bar area, waiting for us to finish moving in. I knew a return would be a painful process so I took it to the local repair shop thinking it would be a $50 maximum repair. I was wrong, and ended up being quoted $250 to repair the $400 unit! When I called SHARP to report it, they stated that there’s always a percentage of failures and that online reports are not a real representation of the total # of failures, so there was no need to alert the public. They also stated that they would not repair or replace the unit due to the age, regardless of the unit being brand new and a known defective design. I’m hoping that this report will alert the USCPSC that this design is known to cause fires due to an overpowered transformer. I would request that you require SHARP to alert consumers of this fire hazard and offer to replace the defective component with the appropriately powered transformer as soon as possible.

The product, in the report: SHARP Microwave Oven Drawer Stainless steel exterior door with pull handle model KB6524PS
I purchased a Sharp Drawer Microwave (model KB6524PS) from Pacific Sales (Escondido, CA) on May 28, 2014 that included a one-year warranty. I did not purchase the additional extended warranty assuming an $800 microwave would last beyond 2 years without major issues. On July 9th at 5 pm, I was microwaving, meatballs for my two daughters (19 months and 3 years old), after 30 seconds I hit the open button and as the drawer opened large sparks flew out of the microwave. I was startled and shouted for my girls to get back. I then hit the close button and more sparks flew and the microwave shut down- all lights and power went off and will not turn back on. This appliance it at child head height- I consider this concerning since sparks were flying. I hopped online and noticed that there are an abundance of comments all over online sites- [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED], and independent electronic blogs of consumers complaining of sparks, fire, melting components on this model. I didn’t believe this could be true and if so, Sharp must be aware and very willing to help. I have spoken with them four times now and each time they have denied any negative reviews or issues with smoking or sparks on these drawer microwaves. A representative, [REDACTED], who said that just like any electronic there is the ‘1 percent’ of any product that is defective and that was my microwave. I spoke to another representative, [REDACTED], whom confirmed all the negative reviews online from other consumers but there was nothing she could do and that she completely understood how I felt having children at home with a fire hazard. Sharp will not acknowledge or assist with replacement of my microwave, even though they are fully aware that this model is fire hazard (ticking time-bomb) in thousands of households across the country and world. They refuse to acknowledge, recall, repair or work with consumers because ‘they sell very well’. I refuse to allow Sharp to conceal a huge liability when children’s lives are in jeopardy.
I want Sharp to acknowledge and provide support for all consumers claiming any sparks, melting or smoke with these microwaves- apparently this is frequent and needs to be addressed in order to prevent death or harm to children and adults. I would also like a full reimbursement to re-purchase a microwave that is not a fire-hazard for my family, a new replacement of the existing microwave, or a different microwave that will not pose any safety risks to my children and will fit in the kitchen cabinet built specifically for this model. Sharp needs to be held accountable and stand up for their name and products. They should not wait for a fatality or lawsuit to stop them from concealing consumers complaints of a safety hazard in their homes and knowingly misguiding consumers.

The product, in the report: Sharp SMD2470AS microwave NOTE: we have two units, each had the same problem
We own two Sharp Microwave Drawers - model smd2470AS. Both were manufactured in September 2015, installed in a new home in January 2016 and not used until we moved in in March 2016. Each unit is on its own independent electrical circuit, with no other appliances on either circuit.
On Saturday, May 7th around noon, while cooking a sausage, one of the units (serial number 128968) had an electrical “event” - significant smoke pouring out of the unit accompanied by loud cracking electrical noise. The circuit breaker did not trip. I called Sharp immediately and reported this event (Sharp case number [REDACTED]). As it was a Saturday, the asked that I call back on Monday.
On Sunday, May 8th, while i was using the other unit (serial number 128862) to cook a potato, it also had an identical electrical “event” - significant smoke pouring out of the unit accompanied by loud cracking electrical noise. Again, the circuit breaker did not trip. On Monday, May 9th I called Sharp and added this information (Sharp case number [REDACTED]).
I told the Sharp personnel that had I not been in the kitchen there could have been a major, house-threatening electrical fire. I offered to have them remove the units to analyze what is happening. The Sharp “Safety Department” seems not to be interested in this.
Sharp’s response thus far has been to say they will send a repair person ([REDACTED]) who by their own admission do not repair Sharp microwaves, to repair the unit.
A similar electrical incident is reported on Amazon on the page to purchase this unit:
1.0 out of 5 starsZero stars By [REDACTED] on January 5, 2016 Verified Purchase Do not buy this microwave! As the previous buyer stated, I too wish I had never purchased this product and would give it zero stars had that been an option. This microwave has a button to open and close the door. However, when you pushed the button to close the door, it would close automatically then immediately open, requiring one to manually close the door. We contacted Sharp who gave us the name of a warranty technician to service the unit. The technician came out and said he could not fix the problem as it was a defect in the unit itself. He did say we could use it until we got another one and he would inform Sharp of the problem. Two days later while defrosting a piece of bread, the unit started making loud grinding noises and smoke began billowing out of the unit. It smelled like an electrical fire. Pressing the stop button halted the noise but smoke kept coming out. After contacting Sharp about this new problem they have repeatedly procrastinated about addressing our request to have the defective microwave removed and provide us with a new one. Sharp does not stand behind their products and after two weeks of dealing with Sharp customer relations we are at an impasse. Sharp has ignored our requests to replace the microwave.

The product, in the report: SHARP Carousel microwave. White in color with revolving glass plate inside. It’s fairly large and heavy.
On the night of January 28, 2016 at approximately 6:30 in the evening my microwave spontaneously caught fire. Myself and my children were in the living room watching tv when a loud humming came from the kitchen. My first thought was maybe the refrigerator until I rounded the corner to see the inside of my microwave glowing. It had not been in use at any point today and the noise was so loud. I opened the door and saw orange flames. My children became a bit frantic and I quickly unplugged it and picked it up. I yelled for my son to open the door and took the microwave out to the front porch. It smelled of burning plastic. I imagine because the ring that holds the glass plate inside was melting. I was able to suffocate the flame by closing the door once again. The glass rotating plate that came with it is black and now in three pieces. It literally melted the glass. If we had not been home we could have lost everything! The wall socket it was plugged into has no damage. The chord is untouched. This fire originated from inside of my unused microwave. I have called the company and have been given a case number. I have also posted a public service announcement with pictures on my Facebook account. This microwave was purchased at Meijer around April of 2015. It is not an old appliance and I would expect better regarding consumer safety from a company with such a big name as SHARP. Thank you for your time.

The product, in the report: Microwave oven drawer
After heating up a bottle for our grandson in our Sharp KB-6021MS microwave oven, when the drawer closed, the microwave started up again with nothing inside and no settings initiated. I came in to the kitchen, cleared all settings, and pushed the drawer close button and the microwave started up again. We then threw the breaker and closed the oven drawer. I called Sharp to warn them about this hazardous condition that might conceivably burn a homeowners house down if nobody was present when the failure occurred. They were unconcerned, said our unit was out of warranty, and referred us to a local service company. I decided to open the unit to see what might have failed and there appeared to be a blown relay on the power supply circuit board. I replaced this board and the microwave is operating as normal again. Apparently Sharp has created a faulty design that fails “ON” when something goes bad!

When we removed the wave guide cover, the stirrer fan was melted and the cover was melted through on the inside. Scary.

this is the 2nd microwave oven we bought by Sharp..the first one after having for less than a year started shooting flames from it but since we had no receipt we were unable to prove anything. We just purchased a 2nd one on July 18th and it got so hot on the outside we unplugged it and are afraid to plug back in and use. We spoke with someone at Sharp who told us they would send us to their safety office because the model we had was an explosive model!!!! I don’t want anyone who owns one to go to bed and wake up to their house on fire!!!! Sharp has agreed after I told them I would contact you, TV and the BBB to replace with another brand new model not the same one I have. Please put out a recall notice because it got so hot it was like placing your hand on a burner after just cooking something on your stove.

The product, in the report: Cabinet enclosed microwave
Sharp microwave purchased December 2014 from an online location for home products store. The caller is reporting that from the beginning of December 2014 purchase, his microwave door did not close properly, the manufacturer was contacted then sent repair techs to the home May 2015 and repair was completed.
In July 2015 the caller’s wife informed him that the microwave had begun tripping the breakers and having a rubber burning odor.
She contacted the manufacturer who sent another tech to their home around July 26th, 2015. The tech took pictures and checked connection to be sure it was plugged in properly.
The tech is scheduled to return to the caller’ home to take more pictures, check installation and plug in connections.
The caller is reporting these incidents as a fire safety hazard.
The caller is stating that he would like to purchase a new model with manufacturer voucher assistance since this microwave is less than one year old.
There are no injuries being reported.

Honorable [REDACTED] Attorney General Office of the Attorney General (Consumer Protection Division) 310 Whittington Pkwy., Ste. 101 Louisville, Kentucky 40222
Re: Consumer complaint concerning defective. faulty microwave unit
Dear [REDACTED]:
I write to submit a consumer complaint on behalf of my great Aunt, [REDACTED]. who is nearly 90 years old and has asked that I act on her behalf in this regard. Attached with this letter are duplicate copies of the following documents in support of [REDACTED] complaint: 1. Consumer Complaint Form (original signed version included); 2. Medical report; 3. 4 email attachments, each consisting of an email string with email initiation dates of 9/29/14, 10/2/14, and I 0/I6/I4, detailing correspondence with Sharp Electronics.
Up to the point of filing this complaint, my mother, [REDACTED], acted on behalf of [REDACTED], who is [REDACTED] aunt. As you’ll note from the attachments, [REDACTED] actions up to this point include emailing with Sharp Electronics and driving [REDACTED] to the physician’s office. Additionally, [REDACTED] initiated telephone calls to Sharp Electronics on 9/25, 9/29, I 0/1, and I 0/2114, and she received a telephone call from Sharp Electronics on I 0/9/14. Acknowledging these telephone calls, the attached complaint- when combined with the attached emails- nonetheless represents the most accurate description of [REDACTED] efforts to obtain a reasonable remedy from Sharp Electronics. In short, and as stated in the complaint, [REDACTED] seeks the removal by Sharp Electronics of the Sharp-manufactured over-the-counter built-in microwave unit that started cooking on its own, that would not cease cooking even with the door open, and that burned [REDACTED] face when she tried to unplug the unit to stop it from cooking whether the door was open or closed.
Please note that [REDACTED] is physically unable to remove the microwave, has no family nearby that are capable of acting to do so, and believes that to allow the microwave unit to continue to remain in her home represents a fire/safety hazard. She seeks the unit’s physical removal by Sharp Electronics and the advocacy of the Consumer Protection Division to prompt this and other appropriate action before further injury occurs.
As I indicate in the complaint by including my email address, I am happy to coordinate action here on [REDACTED] behalf to the extent that your office wants to communicate on this through email. Likewise, I note that [REDACTED] is happy to communicate with your office by phone and through regular mail correspondence should you wish to do so. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and we look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
[REDACTED]

Replaced a 24 year old Sharp Carousel II convection over the range oven when it stopped working with a Sharp R-1875-T Over the Range Convection Microwave Oven serial number 526367. The unit was delivered on 12/13/2014 and installed on 12/16/2014. Today, 12/31/2014 my wife was microwaving vegetables when the unit began to smoke. She had been using the unit for approximately 20 minutes for 4 batches of vegetables and had just started her 5th which was a batch of carrots. All cooking was in [REDACTED] dishes. She unplugged the unit and yelled for me. I pulled the grease filters to see if I could see anything in the unit and saw flames in the right rear area behind the control panel. I used a small Halon fire extinguisher to put out the flames while my wife called the fire department. The firemen helped me dismount the unit and place it outside in the yard.

Sharp Microwave Convection Oven R930CS-P Serial No 14984 Mgr April 2010 Purchased new 1012 Professionally installed during kitchen renovation Platform does not securely sit on metal tri-armed wheel mechanism regardless of imprinted instruction of topside installation caused frequent arcing and burning metal oven sides
Recently the gearbase holding this metal tri-armed wheel mechanism melted filling oven with acrid smoke and again causing metal revolving platform to arc when coming in contact with oven walls. I burned my hand trying to remove the affected parts.
Curiously the touch pad does not light (except for time LEDs), which might allow operation empty ....did not happen in my case. This oven was never used a convection, used sparingly for reheats, and kept meticulously clean.
Sadly, it is a fire hazard, unsafe and now difficult to operate without an intermediate shelf which is not designed with this model.

The product, in the report: Microwave Oven FCC ID APYDMR0167
Sharp Microwave # R-402J has begun to start on its own. The light turns on and the plate carousel rotates. This happens whether or not we place an item in the microwave. The door does not have to be open or closed. It is random. Initially, it was maybe a bi-monthly occurrence, but now happens frequently. I would guess about 6 times a week, out of 3 dozen times.
Also, when we set the time for cooking and close the door, the light and plate turn on and begins to heat up, but it does not count down the minutes/seconds. The cook time stays frozen.
We are concerned that this could cause a fire hazard, particularly if we are not in the room or home.

We have kept it unplugged unless we are in the kitchen as we are concerned about the fire hazard.

I have a Sharp Over the Counter Microwave, Model # R-1214F, Serial # 418658. It is 6 years old. Yesterday it began turning itself on and then running. There was nothing inside but the carousel turned and the light was on just as if I had turned it on. It would not stop if I pressed the stop button. Instead, I had to open the door. It did this repeatedly, which I found frightening because I assume it could be a fire hazard. I unplugged the microwave and also sent an e-mail to Sharp USA. What should I do? I know I will have to replace it but I don’t want someone else to try to use it so I think it should be destroyed unless it can be repaired.
Thank You.

We had a Sharp microwave that self started. We notified Sharp twice and NEVER got a response from them!!
Based on my first-hand experience Sharp’s assertion that “ it is not possible for the cooking operation to begin unless the door is closed, time is entered on the control panel and the START button is pushed” is demonstrably false. At this very late date the suggestion that “the customer have the unit evaluated by a Sharp authorized servicer” is laughable.
After the initial non-responsiveness of Sharp I vowed that I would never have another Sharp product in my house. Based on the 2/19/2013 response I can see I made the right decision.

The product, in the report: Sharp 1200 watt microwave oven
Subject: Unusual behavior of a Sharp microwave
Appliance: Sharp 1200 watt Model R-510-ER microwave
Manufactured: June, 2001
Purchased: Last half of 2001
Use: Household consisting of 2 retired adults in their late 60s
Issues that have started occurring in the last 6 months
1 After entering or even in the process of entering a run time the microwave will start before the Start button is pressed 2 The microwave has started on its own upon the closing of the door before any time entry is made or the Start button is pressed 3 Food has been placed inside, the door shut, a time entered and Start pressed. The timer failed to start and ran past the entered time. We had to press Stop/Cancel to stop it 4 At least once on a spontaneous start-up, we had to unplug it to get it to stop. The controls had no effect 5 Food placed in, door closed, time entered, Start pressed. The unit failed to start. Cancel pressed, process repeated and the unit started
I realize this is an 11 year old appliance and it has probably given us service beyond expectations, but it has not had a lot of use (primarily reheating foods with little actual cooking) and has been kept in a like new condition as far as cleaning inside and outside. The problems are very random time wise and probably are occurring only 5 or 6 times per month. We have not experienced any of the spontaneous startup problems as described in the March, 2013, issue of Consumers Reports but are following their suggestion of reporting the problems to the manufacturer, CPSC, and Consumers Reports. A response to this report would be appreciated.

The product, in the report: A black counter top Sharp microwave oven built into a cabinet using a trim kit supplied by the manufacturer. Model number is R-540DK.
My wife walked past the kitchen at approximately 11:30 PM and heard an unusually loud and different sound coming from the microwave oven. The touch screen was not lit and heat was radiating from the oven. The view window was protruding. Immediately threw the electrical breaker to turn the power off to the oven. Note that an electrical storm had passed thru the area about 30 minutes prior but no lightening strikes were noted in our immediate area. This oven was built into a cabinet. The trim kit was immediately removed and we attempted to remove the oven from the cabinet. All surfaces were hot, but the top and bottom surfaces were so hot that we could not touch them without gloves. After the unit was removed, I noted the electrical wire leading from the wall outlet to the oven was not hot. About noon that day, I attempted to use the oven and it would not respond to my input. I interrupted the power to the oven by recycling the electrical breaker. The oven then responded normally. Unit maintenance history: The touch screen had been replaced twice over the ten years we used the oven. The screen failed again about 3 month ago. This makes 4 total screen failures. We continued to use the oven after the last screen failure, punching in numbers by memory. The light inside the oven failed about 2 month ago. Note that this incident took place just prior to my wife and I going to bed for the night. If it had occurred 1or 2 hours later, I am confident that we would have had a kitchen/house fire while we were asleep.

On 6/13/2012 the consumer was moving his microwave around to clean around the surface, he pushed up against the door which then turned the microwave on.
The manufacturer was contacted the same day who advised him that there were no other reports or recalls on the unit.
The consumer feels the unit is a safety issue because he has young children and if they were to push on the door it would automatically start. He says that the microwave is to only start when having settings in place and then pushing the start button.

The product, in the report: Sharp Black Carousel Microwave Oven
On 5/22/12, my less than 2 year old Sharp microwave caught fire while heating my children’s lunch. The microwave made a terribly loud buzzing sound and it looked like lightning bolts coming out of the side panel where the heating element is. I noticed a flame coming through this panel and smoke so I stopped it and unplugged it. The smoke filled the kitchen. There is burn damage on this panel as well as the metal unit itself. I immediately phoned Sharp and received a case number of [REDACTED]. They told me my case needed to be reviewed as my microwave is out of warranty. Meanwhile, it is less than 2 years old and almost caught my house on fire.

The consumer purchased a microwave and five months later it caught on fire while in use. She contacted an electrician who checked out the outlet and there were no problems there. She put a bowl in the microwave, after less than a minute the microwave started flaming from the inside. She called the manufacturer and received a replacement microwave. The same thing occurred to her replacement five months later. She contacted the manufacturer again and is awaiting a response.

The product, in the report: over the range microwave (not built in)
While warming up a plastic bowl filled with oatmeal for a minute the consumer noticed a burning odor. The consumer noticed that the plastic bowl inside of the microwave caught fire.
The consumer opened the microwave (which canceled the setting it was placed on) and removed the rotating tray the plastic bowl was sitting on. The consumer placed the rotating tray and bowl in the sink and ran water on them.
The fire was extinguished by the water and the home was filled with the burning odor and smoke. While removing the rotating tray it brushed up against the consumer’s right arm and caused minor burning.
The consumer contacted her renters insurance on 3/5/2012 and they hired a cleaning company [REDACTED] to clean the consumer’s home.
The consumer contacted the firm on 3/5/2012 to advise them of the incident that she experienced. The representative that she spoke with (name not provided) advised her that someone from the safety department would be giving her call by 3/7/2012.
[REDACTED)] came out to the home on 3/6/2012 and cleaned the home to get rid of the smoke. The consumer’s clothing were removed and taken to a drycleaners.
The consumer went to see her Primary care Physician (name not provided) on 3/8/2012 after receiving the minor burn to her right arm.
The consumer then followed up with the firm on 3/8/2012 in reference to the bill from [REDACTED]. The consumer was advised that they (the firm) did not believe the appliance was at fault and would not pay.
Insurance covered the charges for my maintenance department, [REDACTED] Community Service and the consumer removed the microwave from above the range. She states that she has not used it since the incident occurred. The microwave is located on the floor of the consumer’s kitchen.
The consumer placed the microwave above the range shortly after purchasing it in 2010.

The product, in the report: a microwave
The microwave has a feature sensor cooking that she placed on bake potatoes and start and it should shut off when the time is completed. The machine did not stop running and smoke began pouring from the inside of the machine. Smell from smoke lasted over 2 weeks. Clothes and furniture full of smell.
She attempted to power the appliance in the off position with the switch and when that did not work she opened the door and the unit stopped operating .
She had to open two doors in the home and run a few fans to get rid of the smoke and used fans throughout. She indicated that she has used the sensor cooking button several occasions before and nothing happened in the past.
She contacted the firm on 10/17/2011 and spoke with a representative who indicated that she would pass the information on t o someone with the company and have someone get back with her.
She received a follow up call on 10/26/2011 while filing a report with CPSC. She indicated that she would give them a call back. She has used the appliance but not on the sensory cooking setting and it works but it still has the burning odor in it.
When the appliance is not in use she unplugs it from the wall outlet and when it is in use she plugs it in to use it.

The product, in the report: Microwave
The consumer says she finished cooking and went to clean the microwave and noticed the side panel had melted from the bottom up. She had not used the microwave that day as she was cooking with the oven. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who offered $85 for a replacement shield. She feels that the control panel needs replacement. The manufacturer told her that because she has tiles in her kitchen it generated the heat with melted the panel which she cannot believe. She says this model was made to be vented which she does not know if it is a reason for unit melting on the inside. The consumer would just like the panel be replaced.

The product, in the report: Sharp, black microwave oven, model #R-402JK-T 53777
Microwave flashes dramatically (not sparking) when heating food, as if it is going to explode. Very frightening! Although it is probably off warranty (a little under 2 years old) this is not really a warranty issue as much as a safety issue. It belongs to my former spouse and she was continuing to use it, standing by to quickly hit the stop button. I was concerned for her safety, as well as our son’s, so encouraged her to remove it ASAP and said I’d check to see if there was a recall on it and if there wasn’t that I would report it.

The product, in the report: SHARP Carousel Microwave Model R-315JS-F, Serial # 043387, FCC ID APYDMR0149. COLOR: SILVER. Made in THAILAND
UPDATE: Consumer originally thought the burnt plug belonged to the microwave, but it belonged to a surge protector. The surge protector that the microwave was attached to is manufactured by [REDACTED] .This was a rotating plug. The plug is now burned and melted.I am currently using the microwave with a new surge protector and the machine is fine.
While using a Sharp microwave, which I have owned for 5 years, I smelled a burning smell, it smell like burning electrical appliance. I was concerned so I checked the plug and wiring. I found the plug insulation badly burned and the plastic surrounding the plug also badly burned. The model is R-315JS-F: SERIAL # 043387 : MANUF. JULY,2005 : FCC ID APYDMR0149. AND ADDITIONAL ID RA57G2J. It became obvious to me that the electrical plug use on this model is not well insulated because this is a model with higher power usage. Please note this is a electrical and fire hazard and the appliance need to be removed from customers home.

The product, in the report: Microwave/convection oven, manufactured Aug., 1983 (cannot specify this date in box below), purchased soon after that (also cannot specify date in box below)
Sharp microwave/convection oven, model R-8310, serial number 93870, manufacturered Aug., 1983.
Convection portion of oven failed. Triac that controls heating element shorted, charred, and partially melted, activated smoke or fire alarm. The thermistor that senses oven temperature (located elsewhere in product) developed a spot inside it (visible because thermistor is in clear glass package), possibly due to exposure to greatly excessive voltage or current. I believe these failures may have been related to the convection temperature control shorting to the chassis, which could be a shock hazard if the oven is plugged into an ungrounded AC outlet. This control is supposed to be electrically insulated from the chassis, as evidenced by the sheet of plastic (mylar?) between its metal body and the oven chassis and the use of plastic screws to attach it to the chassis. One of those screws cracked, and that may have caused the failure. This circuit is not isolated from high voltage with a transformer, and instead its power is derived by a 1-3 watt resistor that drops the high voltage to a much lower value.
The manufacturer was informed of this incident years ago but did not respond, except to recommend repair by an authorized service center (not possible due to parts, including the thermistor, no longer being available, not even from sources not authorized by manufacturer). They did not seem to care or understand the electric shock hazard and were quite poorly trained.

Consumer stated that her electric powered microwave made noise then smoked profusely and emitted a very foul odor. The magnetron of the product blew and was $175 to replace. The product is a self standing microwave. The product was on for about 45 seconds before it began to smoke. The consumer unplugged the microwave from the outlet and allowed it to burn itself out. The consumer was subsequently sent a capacitator and credit towards her credit card for being sent incorrect parts. The consumer received the product as a gift. The consumer stated that her initial capacitator went up in smoke. The damage of the microwave did not spread to her home.
