The product, in the report: big beautiful black 1100 watt GE counter top sensor microwave 22” wide by 16” deep by 12” high (approximate)

My microwave oven turns itself on. When I moved into my apartment four years ago I purchased a big beautiful 1100 watt GE counter top microwave at Walmart. A week ago Monday I came home from being away at work 11 hours to a high beeping sound and discovered the microwave running. A message was running across the screen about a short. I was able to turn it off by finally pulling the very warm plug from the wall outlet. When I plugged it in again and reset the clock, it turned itself on again in 15 minutes. I unplugged it and will not be using it again because I think my once very dependable microwave is a fire waiting to happen.I did call GE and they said they knew nothing about any problems with it but for $75.00 dollars they would send a repairman to diagnose the problem and that it would be extra for parts and labor. I said no thanks. Later I found that yes indeed there have been problems. See:

I have reported this you all at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to help warn the public.

I am now reluctant to continue cooking with a microwave and am hesitant to purchase another one. Just thought you all and the public should be aware that this can happen.

The product, in the report: GE Microwave Oven, Black

I woke up at 3 AM and heard a warning beeping. I got up to investigate and discovered it was my GE microwave oven. I placed my hand on the left side and top and it was very hot. I immediately unplugged it. The next morning, I could see that the large plastic piece covering the front window was distorted and no longer fits flat against the window. I tried to open the door and it resisted at first. When I pushed harder on the door latch, I did get it open. I could see that the instruction label in the one-inch strip on top, just behind the door, had partially melted to the door.

The product, in the report: GE microwave oven, free standing

GE microwave oven is burning along the door and the front lower edge of the oven. I was warming a cup of coffee and smelled burning. I looked inside and my cup was fine. When tried to open the door, there was resistance so I needed to pull the door open from the bottom. Once the door was opened, I was suprised to see burn marks on the door and on the oven itself. Also the “glass” in the door was warping. I called the GE safety center and they sent out a tech free of charge. He said it could not be fixed. Then GE said to let them know what microwave I would like to replace it with and they will determine what type of discount they could offer. It was made 9/2011, purchased 2/2012 so the warranty has expired.

The product, in the report: Microwave

6/26/2012 microwave came on by itself. I heard it running and opened the door pressed clear and shut the door. A few hours later it did it again. Opened the door pressed clear closed the door without latching it. Several hours later I heard the microwave running. The door was not latched. Opened the door all the way and it still ran. I had to turn off the breaker to stop the microwave. The inside of the microwave was so hot it took several minutes to be able to touch the turntable.

I used the contact email at the GE web site this morning to inform them of this incident. Just wanted them to be on notice.

As I know that this could have caused a fire I will make myself available for a statement if any serious incidents involving this microwave arises.

The product, in the report: GE Sensor Microwave Oven

We bought a GE Sensor Microwave Oven, manufacture in October 2009, the first week of February 2010. Earlier in the week, we awoke early in the morning to the sound of the microwave running. It had turned itself on and had run long enough that there was a chemical burning smell emanating from the interior of the microwave. We turned off the microwave by unplugging it. Later in the day we plugged it back in and reset the clock. The microwave worked without incident, but we unplugged it after each use. Later in the week we forgot to unplug the microwave and it turned itself on in the morning when another family member happened to be in the house and was able to unplug it before it had run too long. We still use the microwave, but unplug it after each use for fear that it could start a fire if it turns itself on and runs for a long time without detection.
