The product, in the report: Stainless steel above range microwave.
We bought a Kenmore Microwave less than 2 years ago. We were warming up a piece of left over chicken in that microwave. We started to smell something terrible. We look and the microwave was on fire. We were able to get the fire out. We then looked inside and the red tabs that hold up the rack in the microwave had caught on fire. Luckily we caught the fire pretty quick, so there was no damage to anything that we could see. Now we have not pulled the microwave out yet so we could not inspect the cabinets yet. The microwave is completely unusable due to the big hole that burned in the side of the microwave. We called Kenmore and because there is no warranty left on the microwave they will not help me. They also say we must of done something to make it catch on fire. I can tell you we did not. This needs recalled so no one gets hurt or killed. We were lucky next time someone else may not be.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Microwave oven model # 721.86012010, Manufactured April 2011, made in Korea
This is a Kenmore Elite Microwave model # 721.86013010. This product is sold as stainless steel. Now that we have the product and the handle of the microwave is peeling off some kind of material, we learned from Sears that the border around the window may be stainless steel but the handle is not. The handle is plastic with some kind of plastic covering made to look like stainless steel. The microwave is made to be installed above an oven range, which produces a large amount of heat. The plastic on the handle of the microwave is now peeling off, cutting our hands as we try to open the door and the plastic that is peeling off is falling into the food we cook on the range. We contacted Sears and they are directing us to purchase a new handle and pay an additional fee to have it installed. Here is a link to an appliance blog where many other consumers describe this issue: [REDACTED]
We are very concerned that this product is a hazard as our hands have been cut by the shards of the peeling plastic covering on the handle and the plastic that is falling into our food.

The product, in the report: Sears, White, Over stove, Kenmore Elite, Microwave Oven
Using the independent timer function on Sears microwave oven to control simmering time for a chili-pot cooking on the kitchen stove. While folding clothes in the family room, adjacent to the kitchen I smelled an unusual odor. The odor grew more awful so I got up to investigate. Looking around the kitchen I saw flames flickering through the microwave oven door. I immediately pressed the microwave STOP button, grabbed the lid off the simmering chili-pot and opening the microwave door, placed the stainless steel, chili-pot lid over the glass turntable snuffing out the flames. The microwave fan was running full speed but not responding to the control button. The house was filled with smoke and awful noxious odors. I opened the large patio sliding glass door to start ventilation, turned on all of the ceiling fans in adjacent rooms, opened the windows in the master bath and my office. Outside was very windy with wind watches and warnings all across the High Desert. I added a portable tornado fan from the garage in the main hallway, raised the garage door one foot then leaving the door from the garage to my office open, creating a clear unobstructed ventilation path from the front of the house through the kitchen and family rooms out the back patio door. When cooled the plastic three wheel turntable was melted beyond repair. As a result we are afraid to use the microwave again and the turntable is beyond repair. The odor is beginning to fade.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Microwave Hood Combination. It is suppose to be stainless, but the handle is actually plastic and is covered in stainless contact paper to give the appearance that it is stainless.
While using my microwave, the handle (which was sold as stainless) chipped off. The handle is actually covered in “stainless steal contact paper”. When it chipped, it cut my finger and caused it to bleed. In addition, the chips fell into my food which I was cooking on the stove.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Over Range Microwave in Stainless Steel Model 72185063010
I own a Kenmore over the oven microwave, purchased January 2012. Model # 72185063010. A little over a year after purchase, the “Stainless Steel” handle began to bubble. Eventually, it began to craze and flake small chards into the food below. I had purchased an extended warranty, but was told it wasn’t covered. By 2016 the handle was flaking off larger pieces of metal shavings, one of which I choked on. I attempted to purchase a replacement handle which is unavailable. I contacted Sears, concerned that I might be poisoning us with heavy metals. I contacted Sears trying to find out what the handle was made of. They were unhelpful. One Sears parts representative suggested the handle was made of “Stainless Steel, lead, and mercury”, but I think they were simply making up an answer. They said they had no way to tell what their Microwave handle was made of and suggested I do research on the internet. The only thing I found was that this is a common complaint with this model and Sears will not address it.

The product, in the report: Over the Range Microwave Over. Model:721-85033111 S/N 301TA03694
Sear Kenmore Microwave. Just purchased the home and there was over the stove Microwave Oven that was tested and all the sudden the inside hood caught fire. I saw that there was flames and immediately turned it off and unplugged the Microwave Oven. I called Sear and they did offer to have a technician come to the house for a service fee of $260.00 just to take a look at it, but since in my eyes that this was a fire hazzard I thought that, that charge should not be given to me. I wanted to report this to the government.

It was 10pm. My husband goes out to the kitchen for a drink only to find our microwave is on by itself, sparking and flaming. He quickly unplugged it and was able to put out. No one had used it for it to be running. Had he not woke up and went for a drink we would have lost everything. There was NOTHING in the microwave for it to even spark. I had noticed when cleaning it a week ago that the top part was bubbling and some paint was missing. Which worried me to start. We had not been using because of that issue but it was still plugged in. Very strange to say the least!

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite Microwave Oven
We purchased a Kenmore Elite Microwave Oven 2-11-12. My wife was using it to heat some food and it shut off. She went to retrieve the food and when she opened the door the microwave came back on. She immediately shut the door and the unit shut off. She opened the door again and it came back on. We tried this a couple of more times and it continued to respond in the same manner. I unplugged the unit and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes thinking something inside might need to reboot. I plugged the unit back in and when I opened the door it started running again. I contacted Sears and they were no help. Hopefully this isn’t happening to other consumers. If they do not understand the dangers of the microwave process they could be in a very hazardous environment.

Microwave stopped working for a couple of days, or so I thought. Could not get it to turn on or do anything. Got up in morning on or about February 18, 2013. Microwave was running having turned itself on sometime during the night. I touched it to open the door and it was very, very hot. Have wood cabinets all around it as it is over the stove model. Very, very scary.

The product, in the report: Combination microwave & oven
(7/6/2012) The consumer stated that the night before she set the oven to self-clean. When she went to open the door after it cooled down. She took a paper towel and cleaned up the residue from inside the oven. Without notice the glass door to the oven exploded and flew into her kitchen and living room. The consumer received a minor abrasion on one of her fingers.
-The consumer stated that she has been searching the Internet and came across many complaints with the brand and the same model.
(7/8/2012) The manufacturer was contacted and she spoke with the [REDACTED] (last name unknown) at [REDACTED]. Her case number is: [REDACTED]. She informed her that they would offer half towards everything including, labor, etc. They also scheduled for a technician to come out on 7/9/2012. [REDACTED] advised the consumer to call her as soon as the technician arrives.
(7/9/2012) The technician came out and inspected the oven. The tech noted that the glass may have been weakened, cracked or from using the cleaner. They both tried calling [REDACTED] as instructed per her request, but they got no answer. The technician placed an order for a replacement glass door.
Note: The consumer feels that the oven is a safety hazard and the design should be changed. She feels that if she had the oven door upward she would have gotten glass in her face. The consumer also wants the manufacturer to take full responsibility for the costs and not just offer half.
I was wiping ashes from the oven floor. P cleaning 11:15 AM Oven door (glass) exploded in kitchen blowing glass particles into living room. Big explosion blew over and around me. Kitchen floor covered with glass.
12:15P Called [REDACTED] Sears. They gave me a number to call for repair. (1-800-469-4663) They wanted me to pay for call, labor, and parts.
Cleaned up mess!
Called CEO/President (@ 1-847-286-8371) of Sears. Got a recording. They asked me to leave a message which I did and they would call me back within the hr. Waited for about 1-1/2 for call that didn’t happen. Called again with no results or returned calls. Son-in-law came and took pictures. 6:45P No return call at all.
July 29th 2012 RE: Oven door exploding
CPO called back and stated that they pay for half of the oven repair which came to 184.50 of $368.00. I could see no other way for repair and so I accepted. Personally I felt that Sears should have paid 100%.
Repair was made and I am holding my breath hoping this will not happen again.
Thank you. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Microwave Oven Sears Kenmore model 721.63252301. S/N 507TA06456
Sears Kenmore model 721.63252301. S/N 507TA06456. We have owned this microwave for a few years and are the original owner. My wife placed a microwave safe bowl into the oven with broccoli in it with approximately 1 cup of water. The timer was set for several minutes and the start button pressed. Several minutes into cooking the broccoli smoke started come out from the sides of the microwave oven. The smoke had a very offensive smell and smelled like electrical wires or components burning. The cord is in perfect condition and was plugged into a GFCI outlet. This outlet at no time triggered. The smoke was building so we stopped the microwave oven and removed the broccoli. The broccoli and water was complete cold so it was clear zero cooking of the item was occurring. We placed the microwave outside since we were concerned that it was going to cause a fire. I emailed SEARS customer support and let them know of the issue and they simply responded and said my microwave was out of warranty. I let SEARS know that I planned on plugging the microwave in again while it was outside to test what would have happened had we been upstairs in the house. I let them know I was disappointed they were not further investigating the issue. I have now received another email from Sears saying a store manager will call me. I placed the microwave on a table outside, put a plastic cup in it with 1/2 cup of water and put 15 minutes or so on the timer. I pressed start and waited while filming. After 5 minutes you could smell the odor again. Very difficult to see any smoke. Within 15 minutes there was a heavy constant stream of thick white smoke coming out of the sides of the microwave oven. I actually put the camera down for a few minutes and in that time it when from barely smoking to a ton of steady smoke. Again, very strong and offensive odor. I would say it smells like an electrical or plastic component melting or burning inside the unit. I would say the smoke would fill a standard kitchen in 5 minutes easily once it reaches the heavy stage. I had the microwave on an extension cord several feet from the house. I unplugged it from the house once the really heavy smoke started. I opened the microwave oven door and checked the water in the cup. It was cold and receiving zero heating. The smoke took a while to stop flowing from the unit. I still have the microwave and the video that I took on our small Panasonic camera and it clearly shows the problem. I could post it on youtube and send a private link if interested?

The product, in the report: 1 1/2 cu ft black countertop microwave
This incident occured at my mother’s home on December 9th, 2011. She had a large countertop microwave which sits in a built in wall unit. I, Her daughter, was visiting her for dinner, we had started cooking and my mother placed a microwaveable baking potato into her microwave. This potato was purchased at her local grocery, individually wrapped in a plastic for the specific purpose to be placed in a microwave. My mother placed the potato into the microwave and set the cooking time as indicated on the potato’s label. After a short time I, her daughter, smelled an odor, thinking it was just the odor of the plastic baking in the microwave. A few more minutes went by when I glanced over to the microwave I noticed smoke lifting off of the top of the microwave which had a strong electrical odor. The microwave outside walls were too hot to touch and at that time I pulled the plug from the wall, noticing that the plug and the wall were not hot, which indicated to me there was not a problem with the outlet or cord. I needed to get this microwave out of the house. Since the microwave was too hot to touch I ran to the basement to get something to cover it with, I found a blanket. I covered the microwave with the blanket and carried it to the garage to get the strong odors out of the house. In thinking again I needed to get this out of the house completely and asked my mother to open the garage door. As she was doing that she is telling me she sees fire inside the microwave as I was holding it. I carried it outside and placed it in the her gravel driveway. The moment I set it down and removed the blanket the microwave burst into flames. Once I realized it was faraway from the house and posed no problem to the house or us we returned to the kitchen to find a small fire burning into the shelf. That was easily put out with a wet dish cloth, but it did burn down about 1/4 inch into the shelf. I then took a pitcher of water outside and slowly doused the flames. The microwave was left outside and is still outside. Evaluating the situation it scared both of us. If I a 60 year old healthy daughter had not been there and this happened when my 83 year old mother was alone she would have a terrible incident on her hands and had her home on fire. This microwave was too heavy for her to move.

The product, in the report: a microwave
Shortly after plugging the microwave into the wall outlet it begin to run without being switched on, on a high setting.
He pressed the stop button on several occasions and it did not power off and the door was opened and the appliance stopped. He noticed that the display panel had all zero’s on it.
He closed the door back to the microwave and it began to operate again without being switched on and the door was opened to the microwave again.
Later in the evening when he went to heat a frozen dinner up he placed the microwave on 55 seconds and it didn’t count down so he opened the door to the microwave and it continued to operate.
He has discontinued the use of the microwave in fear that it could pose as a fire hazard and has placed it back in its original packaging to return to the retailer.
He has not contacted the firm but indicated that he plans to do so.

The product, in the report: microwave oven
The microwave was in the home prior to the consumer moving into it.
Shortly after placing a dish inside the microwave to heat up (the exact amount of time the microwave was placed on is unknown) within 10 seconds after the microwave was started she saw sparks flying from the metal rack that is located inside of the microwave.
She opened the microwave door and the sparks went away. She currently still uses the microwave but has since then removed the metal rack to prevent any hazard.
Prior to the incident occuring she contacted the firm because she leard from a home inspector that the microwave was once affected by a recall (unable to locate the exact recall reflecting the model number provided) she was advised by the representative from the firm that if the repairs were already made to the unit there would be a green sticker located near the model number.
She did locate the sticker. She tried again to contact the firm but only gets recordings which indicate the green sticker shows repairs were made.
