The product, in the report: Panasonic Genus Microwave
The consumer noticed that bubbling was happening at the roof of her microwave. She noticed after cleaning and was afraid that when cooking her food, particles would fall into her and she would consume it. She does have pictures that she can mail in. She does not have an email address as she has to go into town to use the internet. She lives 75+ miles from town. She stated that she uses the product all the time. She has reported to manufacturer, but they have not said anything or done anything. She can provide more details once confirmation notice is sent out.

No one hurt Made May 14, 2025, sent to the company Jun 30, 2025, published by CPSC Jun 2, 2025
The product, in the report: Panasonic model NN-SB65NS microwave
We had a Panasonic model NN-SB65NS microwave delivered to our house by Walmart. It was kept on a counter top, minimaly used, and just under three months old.
Our twelve year old son attempted to make a bag of popcorn using the popcorn setting and the inside began to spark and smoke. He screamed for help and we came to his aid. The popcorn was on fire at this point and our kitchen had filled with smoke. After contacting support we do not feel the seriousness of the sparking issue is understood or believed. Pictures, info and receipt were sent and the unit is bagged.
I have been clear stating I am unable to ship the microwave to Panasonic Engineers to study. It was delivered for a reason. As you will see from the attached email screenshots, the incident will be closed if they are not sent the microwave carefully packaged. I do understand why this is important. It is also extremely important that consumers are kept safe and not belittled by corporations. While I don’t expect a refund anymore as I physically cannot lift their burned microwave. I expect the issue to be documented.
UPDATED ON 6/18/2025: [Our microwave sparked from the interior plate to the point the popcorn caught on fire. My 12yo was screaming for help, unplugged the unit, and singed his fingers on the microwave.
We have been belittled by Panasonic customer service and emailed by a legal representative who assumes our situation is not true and will delete the info if we don’t send the unit back. However, we are disabled and had the unit delivered and set up.
We are not asking for a refund. Only that this is investigated and nobody else goes through this. ]

The product, in the report: Panasonic microwave oven
My wife was using our Panasonic microwave oven yesterday evening to reheat lasagna and it wouldn’t turn off, even after the cooking time expired. We both tried pressing every button on the electronic control keypad without results. We even opened and closed the microwave door twice and it kept working, which I think is quite dangerous. The only way I could turn it off was to unplug it from the electrical outlet. We’ve reported this problem to Panasonic and they’ve escalated it to their tech support people. Our microwave’s Model Number is NN-SC668S and its Serial Number is 6H71309148. We purchased this unit from Costco on November 24, 2021. It’s still covered under Panasonic’s one year warranty.

Panasonic Inverter microwave, model NN-SN966S, started to smoke while not in use. My husband and I were home and awake at the time, so caught it very early and were able to unplug it and stop the fire from starting. If we had been gone or asleep we do not believe we would have caught it in time to stop if from setting our kitchen on fire. No one was using it to cook when the fire started, and the unit had not been used at all that day.

My 2 month old Panasonic Microwave with the “Genius Sensor 1200W” just caught on fire!!! I was heating something and smelled something burning. When I opened the door I could see black charred material on the glass turntable and the metal grate (?) on the side of the microwave oven was melted and black where it obviously overheated and caught fire. I was very very lucky that I was in the kitchen when it happened. There are multiple reports of this happening reported on Amazon.

The product, in the report: Panasonic microwave oven Model No: NN-SB646S. Csid: ATH Mfg July 2018. FCC ID VG8EM134AYYMW Serial NO. 6G 78250440. Sticker on back has this serial number: EB06128420518719110456.
Son reported microwave ran with door open week ago. I couldn’t reproduce problem. But after heating a small cup of water for 25 seconds today, and the timer stopped and the display cleared indicating off, I could hear a vibration continue. The magnetron was still on even though the display indicated off! I unplugged the microwave and the plug gave a large spark indicating heavy current use, even though the display indicated off. The water was much hotter than 25 seconds of use would indicate. Very dangerous condition, with magnetron staying on in off state. If I had opened door, it may have given me heavy exposure. If I had walked away with the microwave still stuck in the on state, the water would have boiled away and the machine run dry, possibly causing a fire.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jan 3, 2019, sent to the company Feb 6, 2019, published by CPSC Feb 22, 2019
The product, in the report: Panasonic Silver Inverter Microwave
On Christmas my wife was cooking in the kitchen when all of a sudden I heard a panic yell. I ran in and our microwave was having a spark fire that was turning into a fire on the inside. I opened the door to put it out where one of the sparks hit and burnt my finger. I took it outside away from our house. To prove it to Panasonic I turned it on again and took video and pictures of it happening and cleared again at my own risk. The microwave was heating butter in a clay bowl. There had never been any aluminum or metal products in the microwave and it literally was on FIRE! I contacted Panasonic and a couple emails later this was their (Panasonics) final response Mr. [REDACTED],
Based on the pictures you sent us, the unit is not economical to repair. Please discontinue use and dispose of the unit.
If you buy a new Panasonic Microwave I will reimburse you 20% of the purchased price, not including shipping.
This offer is valid until February 4th, 2019. If you decide to accept the offer, send me the Bill of Sale for the new unit, the serial number, and new model number.
Once received the reimbursement will be processed. A check will be mailed to you. Please allow 5 business days to receive after processed.
Regards,
[REDACTED]
First, where is the explanation of what actually happened!? Second, they want me to buy another one of their products without any sort of safety response to this microwave catching pn firem Third, this microwave is $170 and I got it as a Christmas present 2-3 years ago. I have had a microwave for 10 plus years that was like 50 bucks that never did this. After further investigation I found out this has happened to other people and kind of the same response from Panasonic. So with a $170 microwave catching on fire, my finger burnt their response is buy our product again and we will take off 20-30 dolllars. May I add NOT INCLUDING SHIPPING as they state Their product is a safety issue I wanted reassurance it was a fluke or something like that and a replacement. Yet, i got that.

Re: Panasonic microwave oven - emitting smoke; outsides hot enough to burn skin; burned rubber and metal smell
While boiling a cup of water two days ago, a smell of burning rubber and metal began to emanate from the microwave oven. A harsh smoke also began to come from the microwave, and there was an unusual electric sound.
Even after stopping the cooking cycle, the outsides of the oven were hot enough to burn skin. We were fortunate to have just enough room behind the oven to unplug it from the outlet.
The smoke and smell still continued for a period of time, and it was several minutes before we felt the sides of the oven were cool enough to remove it outside, even using heat protective gear (heavy duty cooking mitts).
We contacted Panasonic support through their website chat the next day. After detailing what happened, their representative told us to take the microwave to their standard “authorized Panasonic Service Center.”
When we explained that Panasonic’s responses to reports on SaferProducts.gov usually claim that the Panasonic product safety team wants “to obtain the unit for examination and testing”, the representative escalated us to tier 2 support.
A tier 2 representative called us later that day to gather additional information. Then a member of Panasonic’s consumer product safety team, [Redacted], called us the next day.
[REDACTED] told us that this was not a safety issue, but was instead only a service issue.
We again explained that the smoke of what was apparently burned electronics or rubber seemed like a health and safety concern, as did the extremely hot outsides, which could have burned through the skin of someone hurrying to move a smoking microwave oven to an open window or outside the home.
Yet [REDACTED] again insisted that this was “just a service issue”, not a safety issue. He would not make arrangements for the product to be evaluated by the company’s safety personnel.
We brought to his attention that many statements by Panasonic Corporation of North America to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, in response to incident reports, claim that Panasonic’s policy is to obtain the unit for examination and testing, or evaluation. (See Appendix 1 below.)
This situation is disturbing, as it indicates that many of Panasonic’s responses to the Consumer Product Safety Commission may not accurately reflect their real-world practice.
It may not actually be “company policy [for] Panasonic [to] contact[] the consumer to request the unit be returned for an evaluation” -- or at least company policy as implemented or enforced in real life, unless the consumer escalates to the CPSC.
This is even more troubling because Panasonic usually relies on this response (that they are waiting to receive the microwave oven or were unable to obtain it from the consumer) to avoid providing comment on why the product failed and what steps they will take to protect other consumers.
The CPSC should take action to ensure that Panasonic’s statements to the CPSC reflect the actual company practice that consumers will face when they report such an issue directly to the company.

The product, in the report: Microwave oven, Panasonic NN-SN686S
I found a post online about how to cook a hard boiled egg in the microwave. I heated one cup of water in a 2-cup [REDACTED] container. I poked a hole in the raw egg with a thumb tack and put it in the hot water. I then covered the container with a paper plate and turned the microwave to 50% power for 4 minutes. After a minute or so, I looked in and the water was boiling and everything seemed fine. About 5 seconds later, there was an explosion, the microwave door flew open and the glass tray (the one that rotates inside the microwave) and the boiling water/egg in the container flew out of the microwave and hit the cabinet about 3 feet away from the microwave. They all crashed to the floor and broke into a million pieces, scattering glass everywhere. I feel like this should never happen with a microwave. If I had looked in a few seconds later, the door/tray/boiling water would have hit me.

The product, in the report: Panasonic microwave
I own a Panasonic NN-SN686S in Stainless Steel with a dial and have had it for several years. Yesterday I used the microwave on standard settings with a glass, microwave safe Pyrex bowl inside with butter in it.
The microwave caught on fire internally after 30s of active cook time. The interior panel on the right side of the microwave was bubbled and burnt black when I opened the microwave after unplugging it and waiting for the flames to subside.
The microwave is out of 1-year warranty so the company will not replace it.

The product, in the report: The microwave oven is approximately 20 inches in length, approximately 12 inches height, and approximately 14 1/2 inches depth; all outside measurements. Microwave is stainless steel and black exterior; white interior, glass turntable on a roller ring.
On approximately March 3, 2016, I put something in the microwave and it immediately made a strange noise. We turned around to looked and there were flames in the microwave in one area. We immediately cut power to the microwave and it stopped. It melted the exposed small light bulb on the right side of the microwave and blackened an area of the microwave near it also.
This microwave never seemed to perform correctly from the time we bought it. Sometimes it would run on a very slow speed as the glass turntable turned and did not sound like it should as it was running.

Sounds like many types/styles of Panasonic microwave ovens models/styles have had fires and various other problems. I just want my money back and these recalled before someone is seriously hurt!

The product, in the report: Panasonic microwave oven, 2.2cft, 1250 watt, with inverter
I purchased a brand new Panasonic 2.2cft 1250 watt microwave in may for Mothers Day and after 3 months of service it is arcing while operating between the door and the body of the microwave. It also smells of burning electrical. It has not been used very much as we only use it to reheat a meal from time to time. The inside edge of the door was hot and had burn marks through the paint of the body where it was arcing to the door. Inside the microwave when it was operating looked like a welding arc. This is a definite fire hazard and could have been a disaster if I had not been standing there watching the food cook. This microwave has never been operated for more than a few minutes at a time to reheat food or heat water.

The product, in the report: Panasonic Microwave Oven NN-SD967S.
I own two Panasonic NN-SD967S Microwave ovens for a few years. Recently one of them broken down. When I opened up the oven, I observed that the wires from one connector is burned. It must be due to overheat on the connector. I took out the connector to examine. It is badly burned up. I was surprised, if the wires is not burned to the point that got it disconnected, it can cause fire.
I opened the other microwave oven of the same model, it is obvious that the same connector also got overheated, as the while wires that connected to it has turned black, although it is not disconnected.
The product is listed as consuming 1250W and the label on the unit says the input is 12.7A. However, when I measured both units, they took over 1900W and over 16.7 A.
I have pictures that can be included for investigation.

My safety concern is that had this occurred unattended the microwave leakage would have continued, the melting and arcing would have continued and it’s possible a fire may have started.

The product, in the report: Panasonic Microwave Oven Tabletop Model NN-SN671S
I purchased a Panasonic microwave oven in November of 2011. I recently noticed that the oven was becoming increasingly hot when heating things in the oven. I noticed a charred area on the interior of the oven near the magnetron. The plastic had partially melted and was blackened. The area was approximately 1 inch by by an inch and a half. It appears to be located adjacent to the magnetron which is located on the right side of the oven behind the control panel. There was also paint peeling on the left side of the oven on the upper left edge of the door and the door opening. The item model number is NN-SN671 S. It was manufactured in September of 2011 in China. My concern is that the area where the charred surface appears might begin burning and start a fire if the plastic reaches its ignition point. I do not know whether this is an isolated incidence or whether similar units made in China will experience similar episodes. I believe that this matter needs to be investigated in order to prevent a more severe event such a fire to occur. Thank you for your consideration

The product, in the report: Countertop microwave oven.
The consumer says the label on the oven, and the specification in the operating instructions booklet show power consumption 12.7 amps. The booklet shows 1460 watts. The consumer measured it using two different instruments with the same results of 16.4 amps on full power. The consumer measured 1950 watts on another instrument and on the utility’s meter. What he measured would require a 20 amp circuit as is stated in the manufacturer’s booklet.
The consumer says the unit does not come with a 20 amp plug which means a consumer could plug it into a 15 amp outlet, overloading the outlet and possibly tripping the breaker. The booklet is the only place where it advises to use a 20 amp circuit. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who told him he is not measuring it right. The consumer disagrees. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who asked him to ship it back. The consumer had a different microwave with same brand and same model number and the same hazard. The Consumer Added: The reader of my complaint should be made aware that, as permitted by the National Electric Code (NEC), residential kitchens rarely have 20 amp outlets on the 20 amp “s mall appliance circuits” that are required along the kitchen counters. The st andard outlets are 15 amp “duplex receptacles” with a 20 amp feed-through rating. This means these outlets are permitted to be on 20 amp circuits but that appliances plugged into them must be limited to 15 or 12 amps, depending on the length of time the appliance can be set t o operate. The only appliances in our kitchen that exceed 12 amps is our 4-s10t toaster; it draws 15 amps, but is designed not to operate continuously for more than a few minutes. Thi s microwave oven seems capable of running for an hour or more and thus may be l i mited t o 12 amps by the NEC or UL. The Panasonic Canada web site lists similar mi crowaves, but they all have lower output wattage ratings. I suspect the Canadian Standards Associat ion (CSA) or UL Canada required this reduction t o lower the amp draw to 12 amps. I have a l ot more faith in Canada than in the US when it comes electrical equipment. When I replaced all the outlets and switches in my home about 25 years ago I made sure they all had CSA approvals on them. One reason I decided to check the amperage of my Panasonic microwave oven it because it is not approved by CSA or Canadian UL.

The product, in the report: Counter top microwave oven,
Microwave oven is unsafe as it draws far more amps and watts than its label states.
It draws 16.4 amps and uses 1950 watts on high. The label states it uses only 12.7 amps and 1460 watts.
The Operating Instructions booklet states, “The oven must be plugged into at least a 20 AMP, 120 VOLT, 60 Hz GROUNDED OUTLET.” Yet it has only a 15 amp plug. Nothing on the oven itself says it requires a 20 amp outlet; the amp rating and the plug are clear indications a 15 amp outlet is OK.
When I called Panasonic they transferred me a and “engineer” who told me the high amp and wattage draw is OK and that I could take it to one of their warranty shops to be checked if I wanted to.

The product, in the report: Microwave oven, Panasonic model # NN-S954WF; serial # 6AO4280171
Product is a Panasonic microwave oven, model # NN-S954WF; serial number 6AO4280171; date of manufacture: 10/2004
Over the past years we have owned this microwave there has been problems with the electrical interlock that permits the microwave to operate when the door is closed and shuts off the unit when the door is opened.
There has been a burning smell and the door interlock has malfunctioned. Upon examination (after the warranty period), the wiring is burned and the connector melted connected to one of the door interlock switches. When the unit is operating and the door is opened there is a spark coming out of the switch, which has burned the wiring, caused the burning smell, and melted the connector. Even when wiring and connector were replaced, the wiring burned and connector became damaged and burning smell persisted.
Not wanting to use this unit any longer, we called the company to find out if the interlocking electrical system is currently used in their oven and their representative said the same mechanism is being used.
