The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Aug 4, 2026, sent to the company Aug 7, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 21, 2026

The product, in the report: Maytag microwave and fan Model MMV4207JB00 Serial # TRA1310273 1.9 cu ft black over the range microwave

Noticed webbed lines on the tempered glass of my Maytag Microwave and oven fan. Model MMV4207JB00 Serial # TRA1310273 Manufactured March 2021. Microwave was not used often, and hadn’t been used in days. It has never been tapped with an object, door has never been slammed. Never rough on appliance. I live alone, and I am the only person to ever use the microwave and fan. The glass had shattered. Likely contaminant in glass during manufacture. Never ever had this happen to a microwave before, and the microwaves usually last a long time.

  2. Seen by a doctor or nurse

Made Jan 2, 2026, sent to the company Jan 6, 2026, published by CPSC Jan 21, 2026

The product, in the report: MAYTAG TOASTER MICROWAVE owned by Whirlpool: https://www.maytag.com/kitchen/microwaves/over-the-range/p.flush-mount-over-the-range-toaster-oven-combination-1.1-cu.-ft.mmmf8030pz.html

I am submitting this complaint to request a formal compliance review of Whirlpool Corporation, the manufacturer of the Maytag microwavetoaster oven combination, model MMMF8030, for failure to comply with mandatory reporting and corrective obligations under 15 U.S.C. 2064.

Product Inoperability Since Purchase My appliance has been inoperable since purchase and delivery in September 2025. From the first use:

The microwave does not pop popcorn or get any other food item hot

The microwave does not heat food, even after five minutes of continuous operation

Food remains cold or barely warm, indicating a fundamental failure of microwave energy output

The microwave had a random small fire which startled me and caused my degenrating heart to exacerbate. I had to receive assistance from home health aide.

This condition has existed since delivery and has never been corrected.

Safety and Fire Event When attempting to use the toaster oven function, the unit caused a sudden internal fire event during ordinary household use. This incident was reported to the CPSC under Report No. [REDACTED].

The sudden electrical/fire event was frightening and dangerous. It exacerbated a preexisting cardiac condition, requiring non-emergency medical assistance from my home health aide. While hospitalization was not required, this constitutes a real health impact caused by the products unsafe operation.

Evidence of a Substantial Product Hazard The MMMF8030 presents multiple safety risks, including:

    Fire and ignition risk

    Electrical malfunction risk

    Smoke inhalation and burn risk

Heightened health risks for consumers with cardiac or respiratory conditions

In addition, there are numerous consumer complaints involving the same model, demonstrating repeated failures across many consumers. These repeated failures constitute evidence of a systemic design or manufacturing defect, not isolated misuse.

Manufacturers Legal Duty and Apparent Failure Under 15 U.S.C. 2064(b), a manufacturer is legally required to report to the Commission when it obtains information that reasonably supports the conclusion that:

A product contains a defect, and

The defect could create a substantial product hazard

This duty exists regardless of whether serious injury has yet occurred.

    Given:

    Widespread consumer complaints

    A documented fire event

An appliance that fails to perform its basic microwave function

Ongoing inability to repair or correct the defect

Whirlpool knew or should have known that the MMMF8030 may present a substantial product hazard and therefore had a mandatory duty to report, investigate, and take proactive corrective action.

Despite this, Whirlpool has failed to:

    Proactively correct the defect

    Ensure effective and timely repairs

Protect consumers from foreseeable safety risks

Requested Action I respectfully request that the Commission:

Evaluate Whirlpools compliance with mandatory reporting obligations under 15 U.S.C. 2064

Assess whether the MMMF8030 constitutes a substantial product hazard

Determine whether recall authority, corrective action, or civil penalties are warranted

Review whether Whirlpool failed to act in a timely and proactive manner once it obtained defect information THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE DELIVERY AND INSTALLATION.

The product, in the report: Maytag over the range microwave model MMV1175JZ with stainless steel finish and interior. Warranty is alleged at 10 years, but that does not include diagnostics, labor, or repairs all of which would exceed the cost of replacement.

Woke up in the morning to a burning smell and smoke coming from the microwave. The microwave was not in use during the night and did not appear to be on, but the smoke was in the kitchen and increased when opening the microwave and the cupboard to unplug it. Felt fortunate to catch this before it spread to the rest of the house. Unit was only 18 months old and worked as expected previously.

The product, in the report: Maytag Stainless Steel Microwave oven over the range with interior/exterior venting (we are using the interior venting installation). The microwave has a surface light for illuminated cooking.

The surface light burned out on our Maytag above the range Microwave/Hood combination. Model# MMV1175JZ00, Serial#TRX5279205. My husband attempted to replace the bulb with a 40 watt bulb (same wattage as the burned out bulb) and the new bulb exploded in his face. A second attempt with another new bulb did not explode but the bulb became excessively hot after just a few second of being turned on. The surface light will no longer turn off and we were forced to remove the bulb (which is when we discovered it was extremely hot).

I own a Maytag over the range microwave. It was manufactured April 2005. It automatically started while my wife and two adult children were in the kitchen, then smoke began to billow out of the top. It was good that we were there close to unplug it for it may have started a fire in my home. The model number in MMV1153AAW. I did not call Maytag because I have read complaints online from multiple people who did not receive any good answer from the manufacturer.

The product, in the report: Maytag Combination Microwave/Hood model MMV5208WS1, serial # TR05144541

I will detail three major issues with the Maytag Microwave/Hood model MMV5208WS1 that are design flaws.

    1. The unit was designed with a plastic panel beneath the door. This panel has melted once already while the unit was under warranty and has started to deform again. The unit is professionally installed and a Maytag warranty repairman confirmed it was installed in accordance with the provided installation guidelines and specifications. The inclusion of plastic as the surface most directly in proximity to the stovetop below the hood is the problem. The design of a critical safety part like a sealing door for a microwave oven is a big responsibility.

    2. More recently, the unit initiated its automatic vent fan and shot the upper vent panel off at a high velocity. This metal and plastic object struck my girlfriend in the forehead and caused bodily injury. Upon inspection of this part, it was apparent that another design flaw contributed to the failure of the vent panel. This large and weighty piece of hardware was affixed via plastic tabs and two small screws. The tabs holding the screws appear to have sheared off due to the stress caused by the moving air passing through the part.

    3. Once the upper vent panel of the unit became detached from the unit itself, I am able to see other deteriorating and failing screw connections, which appear to conceal dangerous electronics contained within the unit. Note that the warning labels on the unit are in Spanish only, a clear violation of the ANSI Z535.4 standard. I fear that the other failing screw connections within this unit may cause a catastrophic failure involving the exposure of internal parts.

The product, in the report: Maytag microwave oven - over the range, built-in

I put a cup of water in a microwave (Built-in, Maytag) and heated it up for about 2min at night on Jan. 4, 2014 as usual. (I do not use microwave frequently. I use it 3-4 times a week) Then, I was sitting in a sofa in living room and drinking a cup of water heated in microwave but about 10 min later, I heard something weird and thought that sound came from a refrigerator. However, the sound was too weird so I went to the kitchen to see what’s going on, then found there was fire caught on the top of microwave in the electrical parts. It was such a emergency and I called 911. Before the fire department arrived, I barely put out a fire with my neighbor’s help but my kitchen already had significant damage. If I had fallen asleep, it could have exploded due to the gas stove below the microwave and burned down whole building. Moreover, it could have cost many lives. Fire department looked into the microwave and told me the fire was caused by electrical short circuit from microwave. The fire occurred from a defective microwave and I am very sorry about this incident. Therefore, I report this issue and request investigation of my microwave and Maytag product

The product, in the report: Over the range microwave

The consumer says when using her stove throughout the day, she noticed that her microwave door was melted. The microwave sits over the range. She contacted the retailer. They in turn contacted the manufacturer yesterday.

The firm offered a door replacement for $200. The consumer is not sure of any other internal damage if they are just going to replace the door.

Also, can this happen to the new door that is replaced. She says the door is currently melted and the plastic around it. She says the microwave does not work now.

The product, in the report: Microwave, mounted to the cabinets, over the stove. Microwave has an exhaust fan. It is black with stainless steel trim. 120 A.C., 60 Hz, 14.8 Amp single phase Output: 1150 W, Operating Frequency 2450 MHz, Normal Oper Voltage 4.0 KV Operating Power Generator: Magnetron It was made in Malaysia FCC ID: A3LMMV20PN DHHS code: 0521584-00

Incident: I had just boiled water on the stove beneath the microwave. Some water had condensed on the underside of the microwave but nothing unusual. I placed a bowl of noodles in the microwave, entered the time to cook, and pressed the start button. Immediately a 3-4’ electric current shot outward from the microwave directly in line with my face, several inches from my ear. The electric current was visibly sparking and made crackling noises like a firecracker (loud enough that my wife upstairs came running down the stairs). It seemed the current came out of the microwave keypad. There was heavy visible smoking coming out of the keypad also. The current knocked me to the ground. I stood up and pressed the cancel button on the microwave. My ear was ringing for about 1 hour after the incident from the loud noise the electric current made.

The noodles looked fine after the incident but had a slight singed taste to them.

The microwave is about 3-4 years old and has never had any problems before.

The product, in the report: Above the range microwave

The consumer stated that the unit was burned, the enamel was peeled off and scorching neared the light base. The applicance is less than a year old, and came with a keypad that was out of order. The light is out where the dish rotates, and there are dark rusted burn marks that have all peeled off. She also stated that when she places food in the microwave for approximately 10 minutes the microwave would continue on even when the time was over.

The consumer stated that she also noticed that the microwave was emitting sparks inside the microwave coming from the light. The consumer stated that when she noticed that it would not stop after the time she set, she disconnected the microwave.

The consumer stated that she had not been injured.

The consumer stated that she contacted Appliance Rescue 1 (800) appliance and a technician was sent by Whirlpool. A technician ([REDACTED]) was sent to repair and he didn’t write down facts he simply said it was buzzing and sparking and he told her however, “Do not use the microwave”.

The consumer stated that she feels that this product poses a fire hazard to the consumer and should be investigated.

UPDATE: Appliance has many problems. I cannot put the timer on over 10 minutes. The metal top stays hot. Runs long after off. It blacks out. I’m 80 and have to stand on a step stool to plug and unplug. Broken vertebrae and fell down my heel. Particles fall into food. I now have E.Coli in system. Interior black burn marks, peeling, buzzes loudly, gets hot, sparks, light doesn’t work

The product, in the report: Maytag 1000watt Microwave Oven Top Model

Visible electrical arcing from under our Maytag “Over the Range” Microwave Oven followed by the house fifteen amp circuit breaker shutting off power, was found to be caused by the ‘Cooktop/Nlght Light’ bulb socket coming loose from its mounting bracket and shorting against the frame of the microwave. In order to resecure the socket to the bracket, the aluminum bracket flange had to be bent downward where it is discovered that there is only one tab on the bracket to hold the socket in place whereas there are two mounting holes on the socket; in other words, the socket is secured to its bracket by a single 1/8 “ piece of bent-aluminum tab. It was noted the first time the bulb was replaced some six months ago that the socket was loose and apparently the opening and closing the microwave door shook the socket loose with the resulting arcing. After reinstalling the bulb socket with the single tab on its aluminum bracket, the bracket bulb-socket assembly was then bent back upward to its original position. Because of the low clearance between the bottom of the microwave and the oven below, access to the ‘Cooktop/Nightlight’ bulb compartment is very constrained, which means that the probability that the socket will come loose from this bracket during a bulb change is very high ... -with the arcing we experienced or worse, an electrical shock for the person trying to change the bulb if the socket comes loose .. Picture 1 shows the socket bracket (bent down) with the wires of the loose socket laid across the bracket ‘yoke’ . Picture 2 shows the socket left ‘ear’ which is not secured when the socket is mounted in the bracket. Picture 3 shows the cramped access to the light compartment and resulting shock hazard from a loose socket.

The product, in the report: BUILT-IN OVER-THE STOVE MODEL MICROWAVE-EXHAUST FAN/LIGHT COMBINATION BY MAYTAG THIS UNIT WAS INSTALLED AT TIME OF BUILDING OF THIS HOME-BUILDER INSTALLED NEW

This afternoon my Maytag Model MMV 1153 AAB (GE) Over-The-Stove type Microwave stuck on after normal use without warning but only the Power Transformer was buzzing until it burned through my empty microwave dish, blackening it and broke the glass turn table from overheating. I would never had noticed it until I smelled an electrical smoldering smell as I was using just the exhaust fan of the unit so it drowned out the buzzing until I turned the fan off. I had to open and close door several times and kept pushing the off switch until it stopped buzzing. I then unplugged power cord and I am still watching it to make sure I don’t have a fire tonight. About three years ago, I found Glass Turn Table broken & replaced it at hefty cost but I did not know how the break occurred but I now believe this may have stuck on once before and now I have 2 broken glass turn tables in 3 years. I do not find any Maytag Recalls for this model and I wonder why! Please help me to get this taken care of somehow. I live in [REDACTED] area.

UPDATE: On February 28, 2012 A&E Factory Service came to my home and only spent about 10-15 minutes looking at my Maytag Microwave and mostly writing notes to his computer. In this time, the Technician did not even remove a cover to the main components and condemned the Circuit Board and Broken Microwave Turntable Glass Dish. He said that Maytag would pay the labor but I would have to pay $221.32 for the parts required to fix the Microwave. I do not trust this Microwave, as I believe that a dangerous fire could result even if they fixed the current problem I wanted them to replace the complete unit or at least cover all the charges including the parts but the Technician said that they wouldn’t. Today, March 29, 2012, I called the Whirlpool Company Customer Service, the manufacturer ofthis Maytag Microwave and spoke with [REDACTED] at 12 Noon CST. [REDACTED] consulted with her supervisor who told me they would not pay for any parts for my microwave so I am filing this report without any satisfaction from the Manufacturers. I hope that CPSC can do something to help me with this problem and others who might also be experiencing this dangerous problem

The product, in the report: Maytag Microwave (digital)

Consumer stated that her microwave is a potential fire hazard. The consumer was sitting about 9 feet from her microwave. When her husband removed a bowl of soup from the microwave after 45 seconds. Then consumer closed the door of the microwave and heard a humming as if the microwave was still on but the light inside of the microwave was off, giving no indication that the microwave was off.

The consumer tried to turn off microwave by shutting it off with the digital touchpad would not respond to her command of turning it off. The consumer had to unplug it from the outlet to shut it off. The consumer stated that she has an above the range. The consumer has yet to call the retailer about this. The consumer called the firm today and was told that the product was not on recall and in order to have it fixed it would have to come at her expense, or company would pay 20% on a new Maytag microwave. Consumer refused Maytag’s offer.

The consumer stated that the that the product got so hot that it melted some chocolate candy that was in the cupboard next to the microwave. The product caused no apparent damage to her home. The consumer opted not to call the fire department at the time of the incident. The consumer was not harmed or injured by the product. Consumer is worried that her husband, who is hard-of-hearing, may not have hard or smelled microwave and gone to bed. This would have put them both in jeopardy of death by fire.

The product, in the report: White Maytag/ Whirlpool microwave

Home owner had the microwave installed about two weeks ago. On 6/2/11 he put a piece of eggplant into a ceramic bowl with about 1 inch of water in it’s bottom. He set the time for about 10 minutes and walked away. At about 5 minutes left, his wife walked past and saw the bowl’s contents on fire. She ran to get her husband, came back, opened the microwave door, turned the unit off, and saw fire in the upper right corner of the unit. She then called 911. The fire went out prior to FD arrival.

The product, in the report: Maytag white over-the-range microwave model # MMV4205BAW.

We have a Maytag over-the-range microwave model No. MMV4205BAW. We were using the microwave’s 30-second feature to heat a cup of coffee. The microwave beeped three times when the timer ran out. The fan and light clicked off; but the microwaving itself continued to run without the fan and light. It took us a minute or so to figure out what was going on. We couldn’t stop the microwave by pushing the stop button. Finally, we pushed the start button and then the stop button to stop the microwave. The cup and coffee were extremely hot and steaming profusely. We left it in the microwave for a while before attempting to remove it.

This reminded us of when we first ordered the Microwave from Home Depot a couple years ago. After installing the first microwave we received, it came on and ran after we just closed the door. We immediately removed the microwave and took it back. Home Depot ordered a replacement unit. We just thought only the first microwave had a defect. However, now that we’ve had this recent incident, we are wondering if there is a design flaw in the units.

Aside from our frustration over the waste of money and the cost to replace the microwave, we were startled over the safety risk it posed. Had we left the room or not been aware of what was happening at the time, serious injuries or fire could have occurred.
