The product, in the report: Model: JMW2427IL02, Serial number: DX0209372 Combo unit microwave/oven
DEFECTIVE UNIT CAUSED INJURY- Dangerous Razor Sharp Manufacturer and Design Flaw -Jenn Air never warned the public. Now they do not want to do a FULL SERVICE Product Exchange. I still have the defective product. I was offered an exchange in August, 2020. I was so tired of exchanges (Exchange #5 due to faulty units!!!). Now they are being RUTHLESS, they want to drop off the exchange unit at my home. They will not help with finding a certified installer. They know this has great chance to void my manufacturer’s warranty. This is insensitive, cruel and unethical. I was never compensated for my injury! Steel plate connecting the bottom cavity and door hinge cuts like a razor blade. I have a 28 year history with Jenn Air appliances. When my home was built in 1997, I purchased several Jenn Air Combo appliances to include a Microwave/Oven combo unit, Cooktop and Dishwasher. Due to defects and dysfunction, I have had four (4) Jenn Air combo microwave/oven unit replacements. After the original 1997 unit, Combo units were replaced: 2004, 2016, 2018 and 2020. (See attachment 1). The May, 2020 replacement, Model: JMW2427IL02, Serial number: DX0209372 is the current defective unit. The area between bottom cavity and door hinge catches food/particles and needs to be cleaned. The steel plate connecting the cavity and door hinge is razor sharp and sliced my finger. I notified Jenn Air on May 5, 2020. (See picture 1.) Jenn Air sent out a Technician to try to file down the steel. This was unsuccessful. (See exhibit). Jenn Air later made an offer to replace because Jenn Air was fully aware of the following: A razor-sharp edge on an oven is a serious safety hazard that could cause severe injury. Manufacturers have a responsibility to produce safe products. The law concerning product liability and warranties grants the manufacturer the option to repair the item, however a repair was not possible. When a defect cannot be repaired, manufacturers are obligated to replace the product. Jenn Air made an offer August, 2020 to replace the defective product that is a serious safety hazard. The post- multiple replacements timing of the offer created a feeling of duress due to having to go through the convoluted nature of the replacement process. I was distressed and felt duress to immediately go through another stress filled replacement episode. I had been through a total of four (4) replacements. The initial replacement resulted finding a contractor and going through the expense of new cabinetry due to the Combo unit design changes. Moreover, three (3) additional replacements occurred within six (6) years. There was much mental anguish dealing with repeat episodes of unit dysfunction, leave from work time dealing with multiple appointments, back and forth with Jenn Air documenting product failures, and the long saga of transferring my extended warranty. In the end, my last (2020) five (5) year extended warranty was not able to be restored. I only received a (3) year extended warranty. Todays complaint is to request Jenn Air to honor the replacement offer made (August 2020) for its defective unit that caused me a painful injury. The unit has a manufacturing defect and has a dangerous design flaw No warnings are being given to users. The defective unit has caused my injury and has liability for future injury. When defective items cannot be repaired, manufacturers are likely are obligated to replace the product. A dangerous manufacturing defect like a razor-sharp edge on a Jenn-Air oven is a valid reason to expect replacement from the manufacturer due to product safety and potential legal liability. If the steel section in my oven was meant to have a smooth edge, but was improperly manufactured with a sharp edge. It is a manufacturing defect, not made according to intended design. It is flawed. It is a dangerous design flaw. If a section of the oven is designed with a sharp edge that is easily accessible and likely to cause injury during normal use, this is considered a dangerous design flaw. The steel in my oven has a razor-sharp edge is a serious safety hazard that has caused my injury and can cause future injury. Manufacturers have a responsibility to produce safe products. Under warranty & product liability: When a product cannot be repaired, it should be replaced. ISSUE #1. Jen Air wants to recalculate and request $1,000 versus a product replacement. A dangerous manufacturing defect like a razor-sharp edge on a Jenn-Air oven is a valid reason to expect replacement from the manufacturer due to product safety and potential legal liability. ISSUE #2. Jenn Air has an abysmal product performance history and is discontinuing offering extended warranties. . Due to defects and dysfunction, I have had four (4) Jenn Air combo microwave/oven unit replacements. After the original 1997 unit, Combo units were replaced: 2004, 2016, 2018 and 2020. ISSUE #3. Jenn Air Warranty Problems: Potential reasons cited why Jenn Air is having extended warranty problems: High Repair Costs: Jenn-Air appliances, especially those with control panel issues, have been cited for being expensive to repair. Brand Perception: Some consumer reviews highlight quality issues with Jenn-Air appliances, potentially leading extended warranty companies to reassess the risk associated with offering coverage. Underlying Issues: Potential issues like widespread control panel problems can make Jenn-Air a less desirable appliance to warranty. ISSUE #4 Jenn Air Appalling Reviews: (See attachments) ISSUE #5 Domestic and General statement regarding offering Jenn Air extended warranty. I was sent an offer to extend the Extended Warranty on my current defective Combo unit from Jenn Air provided by Domestic and General. My invitation number is: [REDACTED]. It was only offered on a monthly versus the usual annual plan. The number to call The Appliance Care Team was 833-206-6347 (jennair.domesticandgeneral.us/offer) Desiring a replacement of the defective Combo Unit, I needed an Extended Warranty, I called Domestic and General. 1-833-912-0961The employee stated, We do not offer extended warranties for new Jenn Air appliances. You would do better to buy another brand than Jenn Air. RESOLUTION: 1. Full service product replacement as done in the past with my five (5) defective units. Delivery to certified installer, Remove defective unit and install new unit. (Full service Product exchange) 2. Assist with obtaining extended warranty through a local dealer.

No one hurt Made Aug 10, 2017, sent to the company Aug 17, 2017, published by CPSC Aug 31, 2017
The product, in the report: Jenn-Air M170W Built-In Microwave Oven (white, 1350 watt)
Jenn-Air M170W Built-In Microwave Oven My son (24 yr old) started the microwave and it worked normally at first but then stopped with time left on the clock. He was attempting to heat some chili in a glass Pyrex bowl (something we have done many many times before). The microwave had not been used within the previous hour. He hit cancel and then started it again but this time although the timer counted down, the inside light didn’t come on, the turntable didn’t start, and no other noise came from the microwave (fan, etc) so he hit the cancel button. While he was asking what happened to the microwave and what to try next, he smelled smoke like an electrical fire shortly followed by visible flames coming from behind the control panel.
We quickly put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, which limited the fire damage to inside the microwave but of course made a big mess in the kitchen. I removed the microwave and took off the outer case. The switches and plastic switch stack inside the control area are what started on fire and burned.

The product, in the report: Jennair microwave oven Model # jmc8130dds S/n 11073146nc
We have a combination microwave oven / conventional oven. After my son makes microwave mac and cheese, the microwave will suddenly turn itself back on and lock the key pad so we can’t turn it off. We had to open the door while it was running to make it stop. It then kept locking the keypad.

No one hurt Made Feb 26, 2013, sent to the company Mar 6, 2013, published by CPSC Mar 21, 2013
The product, in the report: Microwave oven that is part of a two-oven combination built into the cabinet. The oven has a stainless steel finish.
When we cook foods in our Jenn-Air microwave, the microwave will perform one or more of the following actions within 3 to 4 minutes after cooking is complete: - restart cooking with various times to complete displayed in the remaining time window - repeatedly lock and unlock the touchpad - display messages requesting various cooking requirements such as cooking time, power level, recipe number, number of items, weight of items, etc.
At one point the microwave restarted and heated the food and cooking dish enough to catch the food on fire and melt the dish. For safety reasons we keep the circuit breaker off when the oven is not in use and under constant supervision. The microwave is a fire hazard.
The microwave is the top part a two-oven combination oven. The bottom oven is a conventional oven that operates normally when the circuit breaker is reset.
The oven combination was purchased from Sears. The Sears repair service made 8 to 10 visits from June, 2012 to January 2013 and changed every part that controls the cooking, but none of the changes repaired the problem. Then the Jenn-Air repair service made several visits but could not fix the problem.
Now a safety representative from Whirlpool Corporation is telling us that the microwave is designed to work the way that it does.
The problems with the microwave oven have been occurring from April 2012 to the present. Repairs on the oven have been ongoing since June 2012.

The product, in the report: Built-in Stainless Steel Microwave/convection oven
Jenn-Air Model: JMC9158BAS Serial Number: 12421375NR
The microwave was being used to defrost frozen soup. After microwave timer went off, the microwave continued to buzz. After investigating, I discover that, even thought the control panel said that the microwave was OFF the magnetron was still ON! The magnetron would turn OFF when the door was opened, but, would turn back on when the door was closed again (The control panel relay is connected to one side of the magnetron and the door safely switch is connected to the other). This same problem happened before while the microwave was still in warranty and was fixed by Jenn-Air by replacing the control panel. The inside of the microwave got hot and there was the odor of hot electronics (because the microwave was OFF the ventilation fan was not running, however, the magnetron was operating).

Our microwave turns on by itself. It has happened since we bought it. We have had service men come out to try to fix it on several occasions. Jenn Air has sent two differant companies out to try to fix it. They continue to replace the computer board with the same results even though I tell them that it doesn’t fix it.

The product, in the report: Built in microwave oven
Microwave oven turned itself on, typically after longer cooking jobs (3 minutes or more). The unit entered one of the pre-programmed cooking cycles. It did not occur after the unit had a chance to cool down fully. Problems were avoided by leaving the door open slightly which engaged a safety switch and kept it from powering up.
Manufacturer (Jenn-Air) was contacted and replaced the controller in NOV 2010. Issues started again and the controller was replaced again at no cost to me in FEB 2012.

The product, in the report: Above the range microwave oven
While the microwave was not in use it began to operate without being switched in the on position with the fan inside of the appliance and the vent opening and closing. He opened the door and it still opened and closed. The appliance was unplugged from the wall outlet.
He has the mother board replaced in 2009, 2010, and 2011 for the same failure. The consumer indicated that in order for him to use the appliance he had to plug it in to the wall outlet and then unplug it. He contacted the firm on 1/5/2012 and the consumer was advised that they were not going to replace the mother board anymore.
He has not made any final decisions on what his next step will be as far as replacing the appliance.

The product, in the report: Jenn-air Range mount Microwave
We purchased a Jenn-air Microwave oven for our kitchen. Soon, it started continually running on its own. We had several technicians come to service the unit. Jenn-air finally agreed to ship us a replacement unit. Original microwave was picked up be a subcontractor of Jenn-air.
The replacement unit is now exhibiting the same issue that we experienced with our first microwave. We recently returned from an evening out to find the microwave had been running on its own, unattended. The microwave was running long enough to have filled the house with a noxious odor. We immediately unplugged the unit. The microwave’s exterior was extremely hot as was the electric cord.
I have contacted Jenn-air and requested that an engineer visit our home to inspect the microwave rather tan a subcontracted technician. Jenn-air has refused to dispatch any representative other than a subcontracted technician.
