The product, in the report: Microwave oven
Microwave does not work properly. It turns on automatically, when the microwave door is open, even though the timer is not set. Timer is irrelevant in function (Fundamentally, the microwave operates in reverse, it operates when the door is open and shuts off when the door is closed)
The consumer contacted the manufacturer and reported the problem to them. They weren’t interested in helping. The consumer also contacted the dealer, but their rep. said that there was nothing they could do about it without a receipt.
There have not been any injuries.
As reported to the call taker when I initially made the report, the microwave operates in reverse. When the door is open, irrespective of the time, the microwave turns ON and operates with the door OPEN. When the door is shut, it ceases to operate. With the door open, and the timer of, the machine operates without the safeguards implemented to prevent this from happening. the light comes on, the round table rorates, the ionic induction is occuring, creating microwave heating. All of this occurs with the door OPEN and the timer OFF. [REDACTED] 12/12/22 NOTE: I have video’s of this happening.

About 2 weeks ago my grandmother in law and I was making tacos for dinner and got some hard taco shells and put them in the microwave for recommend time on taco shell package. Two days later I plugged it in and was fine besides the black mark on & above the wall plate inside Microwave until last night. We put a bag of popcorn and selected the popcorn button and with in 10 seconds it sparked more than what it had done the previous time.

The product, in the report: Hamilton Beach Microwave
Saturday, 27 December 2014, my Day Shift Sergeant called me to advise he had to call the fire department out to our police station because of a smoke / odor investigation. It was discovered that the newly purchased microwave had overheated without anyone using it.
The FD used the thermal on the wiring & our electric dept came out & checked the outlet. It is working fine & showed no heat signature. The back of the microwave had brown scorching around the fan vent area & the thermal heat signature showed just above 150 degrees. Again, it was confirmed no one had been using the microwave for approx. 5 hours.
The microwave was purchased on 10/17/2014. It is a Hamilton Beach model # P100N30AP-F4 with a serial # of: F40816E00680.
While in a business setting, it is normally only used 3-5 times daily & not for very long.
Monday, 29 December 2014, @ approx. 08:30 hrs, I contacted Hamilton Beach Customer Service (800-267-6419) to advise them of the problem. I spoke to operator [REDACTED] who advised he had not received any notification or complaints about this particular model of microwave & to just take it back to the store.

The product, in the report: Counter-top microwave
A dinner plate of food was placed into the microwave to reheat for 2 minutes 30 seconds. The microwave came on and a burning smell was noticed but the food was fine. The plug was pulled and the microwave was turned so we could see the back where the burning and the smoke was coming from. The safety fuse panel had melted down. Instead of the fuse tripping, the wires leading into it melted causing smoking and burning. The microwave was unplugged before it could catch fire. The microwave was well ventilated and the fans were not blocked.
We contacted Hamilton Beach about the incident and they stated there was nothing to be done as the warranty had run out. Did not seem concerned that a major safety feature had failed on the microwave.

The product, in the report: microwave oven
On June 5th I put some chicken into the microwave for 1.5 minutes. The microwave burned up shooting acrid smoke out the bottom vent. The fire stopped when the kitchen ground fault circuit popped. My lungs were still sore the following day from the smoke. The fire was not in the food area, it was inside the generator area at the back of the oven. I e-mailed Hamilton Beach to inform them, but they have not responded.

The product, in the report: Black Hamilton Beach microwave model P100N30AP-F4
I have a Hamilton Beach microwave (model P100N30AP-F4) which I bought from Wal-Mart about 6-8 months ago. Prior to that, I had bought the same microwave without keeping the receipt and encountered the same issue after having the microwave for fewer than 4 months. I thought it was surely just the one microwave that was defective, so I accepted their store policy of exchanging the broken one for one of the same model.
At night, I was awoken by a fan noise and went out of my room to see what it was. The microwave had turned on by itself, and had set the timer to a very long time. This is alarming because it has happened with two microwaves of the same model and seems to happen spontaneously. The first time I noticed it, over 8 months ago, I was coming home from work and as soon as I walked in the door I found that the microwave was on! This is obviously a fire hazard. With nothing inside the microwave, the magnetron on the first microwave I bought had burned itself out.

The product, in the report: Hamiltin Beach 900w, white in color, glass turntable. Touchpad controls.
Purchased a Hamilton Beach microwave approx 4 months ago. I mailed in warranty card. Today while baking a potato on a microwaveable plate and the plate caught fire after approx 2 minutes. I contacted the company and was advised warranty cards do no matter, even though it is supposed to have a year warranty. When I questioned why the card was disregarded, the representative said they do not honor warranty on any microwave without all the original packaging and receipts, even when warranty registrations have been filed. I explained the danger of the microwave and the rep replied, ‘you should have educated yourself about our policies, prior to purchasing our product. We will do nothing.’
