I was asleep and kept smelling like something was burning I got up and immediately went to the kitchen but didnt see anything. The smoke detectors in the whole house started going off. I went back into the kitchen and started seeing smoke. When I turned around I saw fire inside my GE SPACESAVER OVER THE COUNTER MICROWAVE. I got my fire extinguisher from under my kitchen sink and opened the microwave doorwith flames shooting out and sprayed it, which put the fire out. I Then climbed up and unplugged the microwave from the outlet in the overhead cupboard. Thank God I was home. Could of lost my home that doesnt have homeowners insurance that I couldnt afford after Hurricane Ian

my ge spacemaker microware spontaneously started, my 24 year old son was in the room , smelled smoke opened the door and the smoke came pouring out. he said it was on but not doing the normal cooking thing, where the light is normally on and it normally spins, he said it was just humming. it caused a fuse to blow 2 days prior to this. it was in the middle of heating something and just turned off for no apparent reason. i asked my husband to take a look and he said that it had blown a fuse, he reset the fuse and it worked fine till this happened last night. my concern as it should be, was if no one was home or worse we were all home in the middle of the night and my kitchen caught on fire.both my husband and i didnt even think this was possible until i said i would like to write a letter to ge. not looking for a refund but to inform them before someone gets hurt due to this issue. owning my own business, i would like to know if there was an issue before someone got hurt. when we read the consumer report that other have had the same issue with the same product i felt it was the correct path to report the issue to you.

The submitter is reporting the unit for posing a fire hazard. She put a mini bag of popcorn in the unit and set it to the popcorn setting. About two minutes later, as the bag was almost done popping, she looked inside the unit and she saw flames. She said the flames were coming from the fan cover, near the top inside of the unit. She then opened the door and removed the popcorn bag. Her husband put out the fire and unplugged the unit. She indicated that there is a burn hole in the fan cover.
She contacted the firm this morning and reported the matter. She said they arranged for a technician to go out and inspect the unit on November 1, at her expense (confirmation # [REDACTED]).
The unit was already in the home when she moved in sometime in 2013.

Our GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven, JVM1540DP1BB, purchased June 2011, has begun starting by itself. It can only be stopped by opening the door or flipping the switch in the electrical box. It is installed over the stove. It has been a problem since 2013, when popping microwave popcorn suddenly started making it arc with very loud noises. We stopped popping popcorn, and have continued to use the microwave, but will not be using it further for fear of fire.

GE Space maker Microwave Over the Oven
On June 22, 2016 between Noon and 3:00 pm PST, the above mentioned appliance self-started while no one was home. The unit caught fire inside and melted the interior door and part of the exterior vent. Smoke residue was left on the cabinet and kitchen ceiling. Fortunately the fire was contained within the unit itself.

I have a GE Microwave Oven, Spacemaker, Model CVM2072 SM2SS which started on its own two times last night. My husband and I woke up to the beeping sound of the microwave and he went in the kitchen to see it was cooking “Pasta”. He turned it off and left the kitchen. The microwave began beeping again as if someone was pressing the buttons and when he returned to the kitchen it was cooking on the “Coffee” setting.
We did receive two error messages in the past few weeks that there may be a short in the control panel and if we kept receiving the message to call for repair.
It is still disturbing that it turned on by itself. Had no one been home to turn it off, I hate to think of the consequences.

Left home with GE over range microwave off. Came home hours later and heard strange noise. Microwave had apparently started by itself and was running for some time. Was also making a non normal noise such as a buzzing sound. Keypad was not functional and made strange buzzing type sounds when pressed. Display remained on clock and was not counting down or anything even though oven was clearly running. Unplugging the unit was the only way to stop the oven. Plugging it back in caused the over to immediatly start running again in the same state as described above.

Our GE spacemaker turned on by itself while no one was in the kitchen. It was making a grinding noise which alerted us. It smelled horrible like plastic burning or an electrical fire. The lights were off, the numbers on the panel gone but the inside turn table was spinning. Oven continued to spin when opening to stop it. The only way the appliance stopped was to go above cabinet and unplug. Device was hot to touch as well as surrounding cabinets. Fire department was contacted to inspect wall for fire, they plugged it in briefly and it immediately began to smell and make same noise but no lights then sparked. They unplugged again and circuit breaker was shut off. Microwave was removed from the house once it cooled down. Thankfully someone was home or our house would have burned down.

I have a GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven (Model # HVM1540DN1BB) that is installed over my range. I was watching TV in the dining room when I heard the microwave oven turn on by itself. It had turned on the “1-minute cook” function by itself. The “Clear/Off” button on the keypad did not work, so I was unable to turn it off. I started trying all the buttons on the keypad and none of them worked. I finally got it to stop by opening the door. About 10-15 minutes later, the microwave turned on by itself again. I have unplugged the unit since.

This Spacemaker GE Model HVM1540DN1BB spontaneously started when no one was in the kitchen.The licensed GE repair person reseated the touchpad ribbon after determining it was not worth replacing keypad and it worked for a few weeks, then turned itself on again-this time late at night when no one was in the kitchen. It stopped when the door was left open and then when unplugged. We now keep it unplugged unless needed for use.This is a safety hazard because the cooking chamber was very hot and could have melted or caught fire if we hadn’t noticed it. After finding over 100 incidents of this type regarding the GE and [REDACTED] products on line,it is surprising this appliance has not been recalled. I will not be replacing this microwave with a GE.

GE Spacemaker II: Model #JEM25WY 001; Serial # HT 902307 B. The unit will frequently beep and turn on by itself. To prevent the unit from inadvertently turning on, the door has been left open. Numerous codes will be displayed during the aforementioned. On occasion the unit will lock the keypad. After an undetermined period of time, the unit will resume a series of beeps and one may manually depress the ‘clear’ button to return to the ‘time’ indication. Unless the unit starts the unwanted beeping, or the keypad is locked, the unit can be used. The unit is presently unplugged and in storage.

Caller is reporting safety issue with microwave After use caller cannot turn microwave off because it continues running until caller unplugs it.
She purchased the unit sometime around 2008 or 2009 and had no problems until these incidents began around June or July 2011.
Microwave continues running even when the door is open.
Caller is reporting as a severe safety hazard and for her it also poses a fall hazard because she can only reach the plug while standing on a chair.
Her husband cannot unplug for her because he is disabled.
Caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them.

we have had two incidents in the last two weeks involving GE Spacemaker Microwave Ovens catching on fire.
both of these are under cabinet mounts and the fires have been involving the electronics of the microwave
the electronis area on top of the microwave sustained most of the damage

I was using my GE microwave, model JVM1840CD001, when sparks and flames, accompanied by popping noises, emanated from the shelf on the left hand side front where it is held up by a plastic clip. I turned it off. This happened again when I tried to use it a second time. The plastic clip turned black.
I emailed the GE customer support web site and received a reply that it was probably the shelf coating wearing off and I could purchase a new shelf for “$21.00 plus handling and taxes” or “ a technician could come out and diagnose it” and I would be “responsible for parts and labor”.
I replied that this was not acceptable.
I have been carefully using without the shelf.

The glass door of our over the range microwave spontaneously shattered, spewing small glass shards on to the cook top below and out on to the floor. The microwave was not running nor had it been used in the previous hours before this happened. The microwave was only 15 months old and was used by two adults primarily for re-heating food. Brand of Microwave was GE Spacemaker Model # JVM1850SMSS.

microwaved a potatoe in GE microwave - smelled burning smell. removed potato used microwave again - still burning smell - upon closer examination- there were charred bits on the inside bottom of microwave - charred black mark and melted hook to hold the metal rack. not sure if it burned through.
called repair - they said it was because i microwaved 1 potatoe and to remove the rack and that it’s safe to use i don’t believe so

If I open the door, it will turn on even if i did not press the start button and then would turn off when I close the door. It is becomign very scary to operate this microwave.
