On Sunday 10/11/2020 around 5:15 am our family was awakened by our smoke alarms. I ran downstairs and saw smoke billowing from our GE Profile over-the-range microwave. I was able to unplug it before an open flame started. The Middleton Fire Department arrived to help. We evacuated the home.

2017 GE profile microwave Model: PEN72265F2SS Serial number :DH200988N This microwave has gone on fire inside the microwave twice The first time GE fixed it. The second time it was too damaged to fix. It was shooting fire out the the grid in the left corner of the microwave. If I was not standing there to turn it off it could have set my kitchen on fire. It set the popcorn bag it the microwave on fire. I notified GE and they did not seem concerned

No one hurt Made Jun 27, 2018, sent to the company Jul 6, 2018, published by CPSC Jul 20, 2018
The product, in the report: On June 11, 2018, our GE built in microwave/convection oven (JEB1095) spontaneously exploded resulting in glass all over the kitchen, all over our son’s face and chest and an unusable and unsafe microwave. This is the second time this has happened to us in two years. Much to our dismay, we were required, by GE, to pay for the repair two years ago even though this was a clear product defect and caused by no fault of our own. I implored GE to find another solution in anticipation that this would happen again. I even warned that it could happen while one of my children was standing in front of it. I was assured by your technician that this was a fluke and wouldn’t happen again, and yet, it’s exactly what did happen. On June 13, 2018, I called Customer Service and spoke with a representative named [REDACTED]. She has not returned any of my numerous follow up calls or emails. A few days after speaking with [REDACTED], I was contacted by a man named [REDACTED] who informed me that he was from Corporate. We have had two phone conversations and they have been frustrating, to say the least, as I don’t believe he is operating in good faith. [REDACTED] has made an offer to install a replacement microwave that is much less in value and has a completely different style than what we already have. I tried to explain that the model he is offering is different in kind, size and monetary replacement value from the one that I currently have. He was dismissive, unmoved and rude in his reiteration of the offer and unwillingness to consider my history or facts. When I asked for other options, [REDACTED] offered to sell me the model that is most comparable to the one that I currently own, for “only” $800. (Advantium - PSB9100). This is tantamount to a shake down. In all my conversations with [REDACTED], he seems unconcerned with any notion of customer service. He never even asked if our son was injured when glass exploded in his face. I asked [REDACTED] for his manager’s name, and he refused. Multiple times, I asked for a way to appeal his unfair solution and he refused to give any other avenue or entertain any suggestions that I made in order to make our situation more just. To be clear, he is offering a counter top microwave to replace a built-in microwave/wall oven. The difference in value is significant. The fact that this glass explosion happened to us twice, and that my son was in front of exploding glass this time, was of no consequence to [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] has given me a deadline of July 10th to accept his offer or presumably, he will withdraw it. These hardball tactics are not what I expect as a customer who has twice had to deal with such a dangerous product and forced to pay for the remedy. I have plenty of documentation, including pictures from the two incidents, showing the damage, the email exchanges and the money we have already paid out to replace this dangerous product once already.
On June 11, 2018, our GE built in microwave/convection oven (JEB1095) spontaneously exploded resulting in glass all over the kitchen, adjoining room and all over our son’s face and chest (and an unusable and unsafe microwave) This is the SECOND time this has happened to us in two years. Much to our dismay, we were required, by GE, to pay for the repair two years ago even though this was a clear product defect and no fault of our own. He was dismissive, unmoved and rude in his reiteration of the offer and unwillingness to consider my history or facts.
When I mentioned that I might want to change the color and understood that it might be an additional cost to me, he offered to sell me the very model that would be a comparable model to the one we have now but at 50% the $1600 MSRP cost (Advantium - PSB9100). In effect, rather than making us whole and doing the right thing after two glass explosions, GE is once again, trying to get me to pay to fix their defective and dangerous product.
In all my conversations with [REDACTED], he simply hasn’t cared to make us whole or even ask if our son was injured when glass exploded all over his chest and face. No one hurt Made May 2, 2017, sent to the company May 10, 2017, published by CPSC May 24, 2017
The product, in the report: GE Profile Microwave installed in 2006 in new home. We have owned the home for 6 months so are unaware of some details.
We were awakened at about 5am to a loud noise in our home. Upon investigation we saw flames and smoke coming from our microwave. The microwave was not in use at the time. the door of the microwave was open and the loud noise we heard was probably the door blowing open.We had experienced no previous problems with the microwave. We extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher and the fire department arrived and removed the microwave from our home. They also tried to evacuate as much smoke as possible from our home and checked the walls and did an air quality test before we were allowed to reenter our home. We are still dealing with the smoke issue in our home and of course we had to replace the microwave and trim kit. Fortunately we did not have cabinet damage as we were able to put the fire out so quickly. This was a spontaneous fire. Had we been out of town we would have sustained tremendous property damage. We were lucky. No one was injured.

The product, in the report: Over the Range Microwave
Caller stated that after her spouse used the microwave and closed the door it kept running, he opened the door and closed it several times to stop the operation. However, there was a flame that shot from the top to the bottom of the unit like a blow torch, he immediately unplugged it to switch the power off. He stated that this was the first incident but this was a replacement for his original microwave that had a similar problem. He stated that the flames caused burnt marks to the unit. They feel that this could have caused a house fire.
Caller stated that the manufacturer was not contacted as yet but they feel that this is a fire hazard and should be recalled.

The product, in the report: Over the Range Microwave Oven. Model PVM1870SM3SS GE MICROWAVE
Assembly grill (part #109 on schematic) broke off PVM1870SM3SS-GE-MICROWAVE. Plastic tabs on bottom broke and tabs for screws on top broke. Assembly fell onto stove top.
Having this assembly fall onto a pot of boiling water or hot pan with oil would tend to flip them off the top of the stove towards where the consumer would be standing.
I found two similar complaints on the CPSC website for this model number.

The product, in the report: GE Microwave/Convection Oven
This morning our GE microwave oven started on its own without any action on my part. It is a GE Microwave/Convection Oven Model PVM1790SR1SS. My wife and I heard a humming noise and at first we thought it was coming from the refrigerator. Then we noticed a burning smell. We observed that the microwave control panel display was blank so then we checked the oven which was cold. I then opened the microwave oven door and the humming noise stopped. The interior side walls of the microwave oven were HOT! I then unplugged the microwave to ensure it would not restart.

Lots of complaints about this issue and GE says it is not on a recall.
This product is unsafe and I feel GE should repair it since this is a fire and safety hazard.

Hurt, no treatment Made Sep 15, 2016, sent to the company Sep 23, 2016, published by CPSC Oct 7, 2016
The product, in the report: The product was a stainless steel GE Profile Advantium microwave, model number SCB2001KSS 02, serial number ML900433K, and FCC ID BEJX1241XGA, manufactured July 2006.
Late last night, I was awoken by a loud humming sound and a plastic kind of smoke smell coming from the location of the microwave. I went into the kitchen and thick dark smoke had begun to billow out of the microwave vent. I immediately ran downstairs to locate and turn off the appropriate circuit breaker. I went back upstairs. The microwave was no longer humming and I remember the smoke had died down or stopped. I then moved from room to room to open windows and wake up my wife to help.
The microwave had not been left on. I assume the microwave fan had someone started itself and overheated. The smoke was very thick and scary. I am only glad I was able to stop it from becoming something much worse. The fact that the microwave had been off scares me more. We did not call the fire department but I did breath in quite a bit of the smoke and 12 hours later, my throat is scratchy and I have been coughing, and our kitchen now smells smoky. The microwave is a GE Profile Advantium, Model number SCB2001KSS 02, serial number ML900433K and FCC ID BEJX1241XGA. There does not appear to be anything outside of the microwave that was burning, so it seems that the fire was contained within the microwave.

The product, in the report: Microwave oven
Our 2008 GE microwave oven turns off normally after cooking until you try to open the door at which point it starts up and continues indefinitely, with the door open. The light and turntable are on and the white noise sound seems to indicate the magnetron is also operating. I’m submitting this in case this is not a lone occurrence. It is obviously a huge safety issue. We ended up having to cut power at the circuit breaker just to safely take the food out.

No one hurt Made Jan 14, 2016, sent to the company Jan 27, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 11, 2016
The product, in the report: Microwave & wall oven combo unit
My 2013 GE Profile Microwave & Oven Wall Unit Model # PT970SR3SS with Serial #AA601642Q became extremely hot today and smelled like it was burning even though it was off. I noticed the scent of burning plastic and smoke in the kitchen area and realized that it was coming from the microwave. The microwave was off, however, when I opened the door the heat rushed past me and I noticed that the glass dish on the bottom was broken and extremely hot. I left the door open to cool the interior of the unit. Eventually I closed the door and once again the unit began to smell of burning materials. I had not programed the microwave to work. I opened the door again to cool the unit. My husband and I called HomeDepot where we purchased the item but they offered us no help. I called GE Cares, but no one was available to help us until next Monday. Today is Thursday. Eventually we called an electrician to come take a look at this odd situation. Lowry Services sent over [REDACTED] during our emergency call. He said that he has never seen anything like this before in his 20 years of being an electrician. He turned off the circuit breaker to kill the electricity. [REDACTED] didn’t know how to dismantle it from the wall that it’s built into. He to was concerned about a potential fire in the kitchen. The bill cost us $268.54. Tomorrow I hope to find someone to take this machine out of my wall and out of my home. It’s a major safety hazard!

No one hurt Made Mar 10, 2015, sent to the company Mar 17, 2015, published by CPSC Mar 31, 2015
The product, in the report: GE Stainless Steel Over The Range Microwave Model HVM1750SP1SS Manufacture Date: Nov 2010
My GE Over the Range Microwave Oven (Model No HVM1750SP1SS) caught fire when my wife attempted to warm a cup of water for making tea. We smelled strange “electric”/rubber burning and saw smoke come out from inside. It turns out that the white round disc-like thing caught fire and melted, causing about a nickel-sized hole in the plastic ceiling of the microwave. I am sure, if I was not there and it was some other food requiring longer microwave time, I would have a burned-down house!
It was very scary. Since the unit cannot be immediately removed--- it is a over-the-range type--- I was panicking as to what to do. I disconnected the power chord--- thankfully, it was accessible--- and put a large bowl of ice inside to cool the ambient temperature down. I have never experienced such microwave-fire from any manufacturer before. This is inexcusable. I called the GE Repair number and was routed to the GE Consumer Relations group. They opened a case and promised to send a technician to my home and “go from there”. It remains to be seen what they ultimately do. But no one should be allowed to sell products that get bolted down (i.e. not easily removable) and can still cause fire.

The product, in the report: convection microwave jvm1790
purchased GE convection microwave (model JVM1790) in July 2007. I have not had any issues with it until today. After cooking in it tonight, after it was off and I took the food out, closed the door, the microwave starting humming. I opened the door and the humming stopped. I closed the door and it started again. Then with the door closed and humming, there was a small fire/spark starting in the upper right side. This microwave is only 6 years old and it catches on fire when off. We immediately unplugged it and thankfully the small flame went out. I will now have to pay $90 for GE to come out just to determine what is wrong. This is completely wrong. When their product fails and catches fire, they should be responsible. Fortunately, I was home when this happened so I could unplug it and no further damage was done as far as I know. Of course that may change after this microwave is taken down. I am reporting this as this could have had a very serious outcome.

The product, in the report: GE profile microwave/convection oven Model # PVM1790SR1SS Over the range microwave oven
GE microwave model # PVM1790SR1SS We have had this microwave for approximately 3 years and it is used daily. This microwave recently started intermittently turning on by itself for a few seconds then today it wouldn’t turn off. The only way to stop it is to pull the power cord. I am very thankful to have been home when this happened because it IS getting very hot inside when it comes on and I have no doubt that it would have caused a house fire if I wasn’t home to catch it. While searching online for any recall information I found that other consumers have also experienced the exact same problem with some people also reporting kitchen fires caused by this microwave. There are videos on youtube documenting this exact model of GE Microwave turning on by itself also. I believe there should be a recall issued for this unit as it is a danger to households. I shudder to think that it could have come on at night while we were asleep putting our children and family at risk. Something needs to be done to make the public aware of this potential danger.

The product, in the report: GE Profile microwave/convection over the range Model PVM1790sr1ss Serial # VZ301889k Stainless steel
Today, 11-24-14 my GE Profile microwave/convection over the stove oven started by itself. The only way to stop it was by opening the door, as hitting the clear button did not work. This oven was purchased and installed in December, 2012. Apparently there is only a one year warranty and my long hold time with GE today resulted in a disconnect on their part.
I checked for recalls on this oven and there are tons of complaints about this product but no recall. I have called my own repair person to see if he can come out and figure what the problem is. I spent $ 700 on this model and am not interested in GE sending out their own tech.
As this is a horrible safety issue, we will unplug it until I find out the problem. Due to the rate of complaints online, I will not be purchasing a GE product again. I will though, try to get through to GE help center later, after my repair person has returned my call. I can then report how they handled it and I am not expecting them to do anything about it as it is out of warranty. As this is a fire issue, I would like to know why they would not cover it. Who ever heard of an appliance going on by itself? Why should I have to worry about that?

The microwave oven surface light gets so hot that it makes the inside of the microwave so hot that I actually got burned when I went to clean the oven yesterday. There are 2 bulbs; one of them is for low light and the other is for a brighter output. The brighter bulb get way to hot is causes this very dangerous problem. I am recommending that GE offer a different surface light bulb that will not radiate so much heat.

The product, in the report: GE profile microwave/convection oven Model # PVM1790SR1SS
GE microwave model # PVM1790SR1SS This is an overhead unit installed above the stove. The microwave is used about 10 to 20 times a day. Over the last couple of months we noticed that the microwave would turn on intermittently for a few seconds then shut off. We thought nothing of it. Today after returning home from grocery shopping we noticed smoke in the kitchen area. The microwave was running and was extremely hot. We pulled the power cord to the microwave to shut it off and sprayed water on it to cool it down. I have no doubt in my mind that if I would have returned home any later that the microwave would’ve caught fire and caused serious damage. I checked online to see if there are any recalls and there are none for this microwave at this time. While looking online I noticed that other consumers have faced similar problems, some homes have even caught fire. There is a video on YouTube titled: GE profile Pvm1790sr1ss starts on its own! This video shows exactly what mine did before it started to smoke. This seems to be a serious safety issue not too sure why nothing has been done about it?

GE Microwave Profile Series “Over Cooktop” Model PVM1870SM3SS. While I was defrosting food for dinner in the microwave, the Grille Assembly fell off the top of the microwave oven and shattered on the cook top below. Fortunately there was nothing on the cook top at the time. The Grille Assembly weighs 2-3 lbs, and had there been a frying pan or pot of boiling water on the cooktop, I would have suffered severe burns. As it was, pieces of hard, sharp plastic flew all over the kitchen, starting at about my waist (~36” above the floor) and could have caused damage to small children’s eyes.

The consumer stated the first time that it happened, the microwave came on by itself She opened the door, hit clear, and it stopped. The other times that it happened were immediately following use. It would start up on it ‘s own when the door was closed. She would have to do the same thing to turn it off. Power is now shut off to the microwave, except when in us . After use, power is again shut off to the unit. The above has happened 5 times.
UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: On 6/17/12 the consumer called GE customer relations.
On 6/24/13, GE sent a service technician to replace the key pad. The tech could not duplicate the problem and since working on the unit, it has not happened again.

The product, in the report: Black GE Microwave model PEM31DM3BB
We purchased a brand new, GE Microwave (Model #PEM31DM3BB) that was professionally installed in our new home last year. The microwave caught fire while microwaving a glass bottle containing baby milk for 1 minute. Fortunately, my wife was present to see the microwave catch fire and quickly extinguished the flame, however the inside of the microwave melted from the flames.
We have reported this to GE and they sent a technician to investigate. His initial assessment was that this was caused by food in the microwave getting caught behind the plastic walls of the microwave and catching fire. This seems unlikely since the microwave is cleaned regularly and the only food that could have been caught in the plastic walls would be very small.
In any event, this might be broader issue affecting these devices. It sounded and smelt more like an electrical short than burning food.

GE Spacemaker Microwave has started to randomly turn on/off. Microwave, Model JVM3670SK06, turned itself on without hitting any controls, did not count down time, and continued to operate. Had to open door to shut off microwave - closing door RESUMED microwave operation. If unattended and it happens to turn on by itself again, this will lead to a melt down or fire. Use must be immediately discontinued. The Magnetron on the unit has already been replaced within the warranty. This brand of microwave is completely unsafe and a fire hazard. Previous models have had this same problem and it appears GE has still not fixed this safety issue after almost 12 years of problems with these models.

Model: PVM1870SM3SS Over-the-range GE Profile Microwave with recirculating, hidden vent fan.
My PVM1870SM3SS over the range Microwave (installed new May 2010) broke in a rather shocking and dangerous way while I was cooking -- the hidden vent assembly broke off during normal use. The recirculating vent design is a thick, heavy, hidden door held up by two thin plastic mounts. Normally it sits flush with the front of the microwave above the main door but when the microwave oven is turned on, a motor causes it to tilt forward so air van recirculate upwards and out of the top of the microwave in front of the cabinet. This door assembly is several inches thick and weighs several pounds and when the two, paper thin plastic mounts failed it dropped onto the range below while I was cooking. Thankfully I was just cooking eggs -- not boiling water -- or I would have been severely burned.
I have no kids. I am not home very much. I don’t cook much, I usually eat out. The unit was virtually new and yet it still failed dramatically and dangerously. Oh, 1 year warranty, so it’s my problem.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Advantium120 Household speedcook oven. Built-in.
My GE Microwave Advantium 120 oven was installed in january 2011. The other day the microwave just suddenly stopped working. This is a built in oven and is out of warranty. I removed the oven and opened the cover to troubleshoot the problem. I found one of the primary wires to the high voltage transformer for the magnetron was disconnected. On closer inspection I found that the lug on the transformer that the wire was connected to (spade type connector) had melted through completely. The wire’s insulation was scorched and melted. I am relieved that the connector melted before catching fire. I believe this was caused by a serious defect in assembly or design and is a potential fire hazard. I have reported this to the manufacturer, General Electric and I am awaiting their response. Regards, [REDACTED]
