The product, in the report: Over the counter microwave
This caller is reporting his over the counter microwave purchased in September 2005 with no problems at all until September 24th, 2014, when the front tempered glass shield fell from the appliance door when the caller shut the door. The caller said he did not shut the door hard, he shut it just as anyone allows the door to be shut after removing whatever has been heated. He is reporting this incident happened as a failure of the supporting frame on the appliance door cracked and precipitated the fall of the glass panel shield on to the stovetop below. The caller reports that the color of the plastic at the bottom area of the support failure is significantly different from the extant frame of the appliance and hypothesizes that a related cause in the incident is the long-term presence of heat originating at the stovetop. The caller reported that the distance from any source of heat was over twice the recommended distance recommended by the appliance manufacturer, hence this catastrophic structural failure of the support frame of the door panel glass shield should not have occurred. It is being reported as a safety hazard due to a consumer expectation that an appliance designed to be installed above a source of heat such as a stove top for any number of years of service cannot be a source of structural failure when utilized in that capacity because food, oils and liquids may be in the process of cooking and preparation and be the source of scalding or fire to the user or bystander when both areas of stovetop and microwave oven are in use simultaneously.
There were no injuries reported.
Caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does plan to contact them.
