No one hurt Made Jun 2, 2015, sent to the company Jun 10, 2015, published by CPSC Jun 24, 2015
The product, in the report: GE 1100-watt white microwave oven. Dimensions: about 21x12x14 (WxHxD) inches.
The magnetron occasionally fails to turn off and, after more use, never turning off forcing me to have to unplug it when not using it. Purchased at Sam’s Club in [REDACTED] in early 2013, the microwave worked well for a year. Then, one day, in early 2014, when I was done cooking my small frozen pizza in the microwave, I heard a fairly faint (about 20 db at 1 meter distance) humming sound coming from it and the food was still cooking despite having pressed the stop button. By simply unplugging it, waiting a few seconds, and plugging it back in, the magnetron stopped running and the microwave returned to normal. About 4 to 6 months later, it happened again and the simple power cycle returned it to normal. It happened once again about 3 months later and the usual fix worked. Then, on June 2, 2015, the usual fix stopped working.
Knowing that microwave ovens work by emitting electromagnetic radiation at the right wavelength so that water molecules absorb it, heating up and thus heating up the food being cooked (since food has a lot of water in it), it is very unsafe to open the microwave while the magnetron is going since the human body is primarily water. Thus, the only safe way I can use the microwave, which has a hazard of its own, is to have it unplugged, open the door, insert my food item I want to cook, get the timer going so it rotates, press stop when done, unplug the microwave, then open the door. Due to the heavy power draw of the magnetron, repeatedly plugging in and unplugging the machine results in sparking inside the plug which can pose a potential fire hazard.

The product, in the report: GE Profile countertop microwave; stainless and black;
On 11/30/14 the consumer used the unit for about 1 minute and a half to heat up a cup of water. When he took his cup of water out and closed the door he states the unit turned back on. He states the unit was not set for more time and that it ran for about 30 seconds. The consumer states that it has occurred about 6 times in the past week. He states the unit will begin running by itself without anyone touching it. Also when he placed his hand on the door it began running. He states it normally runs for approximately 30 seconds every time.
On 11/30/14 the consumer called the firm but was not able to speak with anyone. He then called the retailer but they were closed.
On 12/01/14 the consumer has contacted the retail store and spoke with [REDACTED]. The consumer advised [REDACTED] of the incident and [REDACTED] advised the consumer she would call him back. [REDACTED] informed the consumer that she spoke with the firm and there was no recall on the unit. [REDACTED]advised the consumer that the problem was 2 switches that need to be replaced and the repairs would cost the consumer $164.
The consumer has not had the unit repaired or had any problems before.
After contacting CPSC the consumer called GE repair and they sent out a repair person. He determined that it was probably a door switch problem. He ordered the door switches and a new board. When it arrived (the parts) another service person came out and determined that only the switches needed replacement. He also realigned the door and it has worked without mishap since. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: General Electric Microwave Oven
I have a General Electric Microwave oven. Model: JVM1540SP1SS, Serial No:DT920450B. When it is plug in, it will automatically turn on and “heat” for at least one minute. There is no one near the oven and it will start by itself. I have contacted the manufacturer and they are trying to tell me based on visual inspection only that the problem is in the keypad. Although that may be correct, I don’t know what it randomly started to occur after four years of service.

The product, in the report: Microwave
Caller and his wife purchased a microwave in May 2010 and had no problems with it until around January 17th, 2013 when he got up one around 10:00 in the evening, walked into the kitchen and the microwave was running. His wife was still in bed and he was the first in the kitchen. He tried to turn the microwave off and he could not until he opened the door then unplugged it. Microwave display was scrolling the message, “Short in keypad may need service”.
This happened again when he plugged it back in to check whether initial incident was a fluke
There have been no injuries.
Caller contacted the manufacturer around January 20th, 2013, was placed on hold then came back to offer 50% of repair costs after the caller paid $90 for her to send tech out then the 50% of the repair. He and his wife went shopping and purchased a replacement microwave from a different manufacturer.
He is asking for reimbursement of his monies spent for the new microwave he had to purchase due to faulty microwave being reported having such an issue of fire danger and it being less than three years old.
