  1. No one hurt

Made Jan 11, 2022, sent to the company Jan 14, 2022, published by CPSC Jan 31, 2022

The product, in the report: GE Appliances Over the Range Microwave Oven, Model # JVM3160RF5SS, Stainless Steel. 30-inch width.

GE Over the Range Microwave Model #JVM3160RF5SS tripped a circuit breaker. After resetting the circuit breaker, the unit instantly began making a vibrating/buzzing noise, even though the unit was not in the “ON” position or operating. I soon began to smell the very distinct smell of electric (burning plastic) and smoke came into the kitchen. I quickly unplugged the unit and turned off the main power to the house. The smoke and burning smell were alarming to me. An electrician came to our house to make sure the problem was not wiring. It was in fact from the microwave.

The product, in the report: Combination wall oven/microwave, General Electric JKP90DP3BB

The microwave in our combination wall oven/microwave (General Electric JKP90DP3BB, manufactured in 2013) stopped displaying its clock, and was very hot on the inside, even though not in operation. I shut off the circuit breaker, allowed it to cool down, and then powered it on again. The microwave gave off a humming noise whenever the door was closed, and again became very hot on the inside, even though not in operation. I suspect an electrical short, which may have caused a fire, had I not been home.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Microwave Oven model number PVM1970SR1SS

My GE Profile microwave model number PVM1970SR1SS got so hot I needed oven mitts to remove the glass turntable. The microwave had shut off and no power appeared to going to the oven (ie the clock wasn’t functioning and the lights underneath wouldn’t come on). I turn the breaker off just to let it cool down. The next day I noticed the oven was cool so I turned the breaker back on. Within minutes the glass turntable became hot to the touch. This is a over the stove type.

The product, in the report: GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven JVM1540 Stainless steel. Rangetop

Model JVM1540 GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven was bought and installed by a local proffessional install service (lowes) in 2013. We have kept the microwave in great condition and have followed all safety rules of operation. Two days ago (8/10/17) I noticed a strange smell coming from, the microwave when heating up some lunch. I stopped the microwave and looked inside and there is a 3 inch hole melted on the ceiling of the inside. There was plastic dripping down onto the food.

The product, in the report: GE over-the-range microwave oven - stainless steel with plastic interior

On 3/7/2017 I attempted to warm a “hot cross bun” muffin in my GE microwave oven. I set the timer for 15 seconds; after 10 seconds the muffin ignited into a fire and the microwave plate it was setting on exploded into pieces. Luckily I was nearby and immediately opened the oven, smothered the flames with a pot lid, closed the oven and pulled the plug from the electrical outlet. The fire created a foul odor and heavy smoke that penetrated the air of my home. The muffin became a 2 x 2 inch sized cinder; the smoke discolored the plastic interior of the oven and the ceiling blade cover melted. This microwave (GE Model JVM6175RF1SS - Serial # MD221537B) is only 2 years old and was purchased January 30, 2015 as part of the appliance package provided in a new home by the home builder . Since the appliance came with only a 1 year warranty, I purchased an extended warranty through GE’s Warranty Service Corporation Assurant. The warranty/extended warranty has been continuously maintained since 01/20/2015. On 3/8/2017 I notified Assurant of the fire/damage and they arranged for a GE service tech to service/examine the microwave on 3/9. In his examination he determined that the oven was not repairable and told me to keep the oven unplugged until replaced by GE/Assurant. I have received an email message from GE Claims stating that they have no culpability or responsibility to repair/replace the appliance since the fire was due to “negligence” on my behalf. I have sent a letter of protest to the warranty department but have not received a response. On examination, the service tech reported that he believed sparking occurred around shelf clips in the oven that in turn caused the fire. This is not due to my negligence and I believe the oven malfunctioned yet GE denies responsibility; I now have to spend money I do not have to purchase a new oven.
