  1. No one hurt

Made Nov 27, 2015, sent to the company Feb 1, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 17, 2016

The product, in the report: Microwave Oven

November 27th, 2015 this caller woke around 1:30AM to the smoke alarms sounding then when he investigated, he found his microwave oven was on fire at the upper right hand vent.

He grabbed his fire extinguisher and put the approximately two inch flames out. The circuit breaker had already tripped itself off.

He opened the doors and windows to rid the house of smoke.

He tried to open the oven door to obtain the model and serial numbers but the door is fused shut.

The caller states that this microwave-oven unit has been used for nothing more than the exhaust fan and the clock for over a year because it was tripping breakers when in use.

There are no injuries being reported

The caller as not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them.

The product, in the report: GE Advantium 120

Caller purchased an under the counter microwave around the beginning of 2006 and had no problems with it at all until around January 2010 when she noticed that after she heated her food and shut the microwave door it just kept running.

She began leaving the door open whenever the use of the microwave was not needed. She continued this practice until February 14th, 2013 when she read about the microwaves that have continued running or turning on by themselves.

She is asking that her product be reviewed and recalled. There have been no injuries. She has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them.

  3. First aid

Made Jul 15, 2012, sent to the company Aug 2, 2012, published by CPSC Aug 16, 2012

The product, in the report: Ge Advantium 220 volt oven (microwave)

Normal use heating water with microwave only. Bright Electrical arcing was seen coming from the oven electronic control cabinet, NOT the cooking area.

A fire started in the interior of the oven electronic area. After burning for awhile, main power to the unit was cut off at the dedicated circuit breaker for the oven and the fire then went out.

Following disassembly and troubleshooting of the oven it was determined that massive electrical arcing emanating from the magnetron had electrically burned and welded closed the door safety switch and the control cabinet thermal cutoff switch.

The result was a runaway failure condition which destroyed system safeguards, allowed the unit to operate WHILE THE DOOR WAS OPEN and allowed an overheat fire condition to persist while NOT shutting down power automatically.

Thousands of internet messages are indicating trouble with arcing and thermal cutoff switches in the Advantium series of microwave ovens.
