Emerson microwave started a fire. I was microwaving food and the sidewall of the microwave burst into flame. This was NOT a food fire. This was not caused by grease build up. The sidewall erupted into sparks and then a fire. I was in the kitchen and put it out quickly but my house could have burned down. This seems incredibly dangerous. It was a Emerson 0.7 CU. FT. 700 Watt, Touch Control, Black Microwave Oven, MW7302B. Purchased in March 2018. Fire occurred today in May of 2022.

(5/13/2022) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: Based on the photos provided by the consumer it is clear that the unit was not cleaned/maintained properly. As a result, this causes the unit to spark/arch. As stated within our owner’s manual, if the unit is not maintained properly by following the guidelines in the manual, the warranty is voided for negligence. It is the consumers responsibility to follow the directions provided in the owner’s manual carefully and clean the unit regularly.

Our Emerson Microwave Oven, model # MW9339SB, S/N 206037924MM purchased from Walmart on 10/5/12, while being used last night, 2/12/17 started to spark and had smoke coming out of the inside vent. When the door was open you could smell burnt wiring or burnt internal parts. Our unit is well maintained and clean. Emerson says no recall of this product and is mailing us a shipping label. They want unit sent to them for inspection and if they determine the fire was caused by misuse then they will do nothing. (Kind of like the fox guarding the henhouse.) Fortunately I was standing right at the counter and turned off the product before any fire damage occurred.

The Emerson household microwave oven (model no MW8773SL, manufactured April 2006, S/N 60404290 GG) was plugged into an outlet, not in use, and no food/items were inside the microwave oven at the time of the incident. The microwave oven spontaneously started running. Luckily I had witnessed the microwave turn on, so I went to stop the microwave from running. The microwave did not turn off when the “STOP” or “RESET” buttons were pressed. I unplugged the microwave before further damage could result.
I placed a cup of water inside the microwave so that it had something to heat when I tested it. The microwave turned back on instantly when plugged back in, and was again unresponsive from the touchpad. Video of this test was taken.
As a result, I have safely disassembled the unit for parts, but I have kept the controls/switches.
My opinion is that either a switch or relay keeping the microwave oven off had failed, allowing the microwave to turn on independently of the control board.

09/14/2015 - The consumer used the microwave and when his food was ready, he opened the microwave door to extract it. When he did so, the unit turned on again and started cooking. The consumer unplugged his unit in order for it to stop.
The consumer states that his has happened an approximate six times.
09/15/2015 - The consumer contacted the manufacturer via e-mail but has yet to receive any word back.
The consumer has no injuries to report. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard to consumers.

(10/26/2015) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: The Owner’s Manual indicates the cavity must be wiped clean after each use. If this is not done, grease will release through the vents into the electrical workings of the unit and possibly cause the unit to short circuit or continue to run when time runs out. Not cleaning the cavity regularly controls this issue and if not cleaned, the warranty is voided. Emerson does not recommend the continued use of products that have not been cleaned regularly.On 9/25/15, Emerson offered to pick up the unit to evaluate it(#83483) but consumer stated this was not sufficient. Without an evaluation, we can not determine the cause of this issue. Usually, lack of regular cleaning causes this issue and voids the warranty.

The product, in the report: Emerson Microwave MW8999SB On the phone Emerson representative admitted to me that the microwave was dangerous when the first microwave was shooting sparks. This one is definately dangerous. At least I was close enough to unplug it very quickly.

I purchased an Emerson microwave MW8999SB. The microwave started shooting sparks from a side panel in the microwave. I contacted Emerson and the sent me another microwave of the same Model. I thought maybe the first one was just a faulty one. They told me to cut the cord from the old microwave and throw it away so that noone else could use it because it was dangerous. Now the second microwave of the same Model started shooting sparks out of the side panel again. This time sparks were so strong they lit up the inside of the microwave and burned holes in the top of the microwave. I am afraid this microwave is not only a fire danger but is also releasing to much radiation. After the sparking and the burnt holes in the microwave it still continues to work. I am concerned about consumers continuing to use them until they stop working completely when they are damaged and dangerous. I was using the microwave to heat some soup in a microwavable container. I have kept the microwave clean and used it properly. I made a point of not touch the microwave for fear of shock. I unplugged it quickly. When I opened the door fumes from inside of the burned microwave filled my kitchen. I was inhaling emissions from the microwave and had to be very close to it to unplug it.

(6/8/2015) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: This consumer contacted Emerson in May, 2011 and was advised the cavity of the unit must be wiped clean after each use to avoid sparking and possibly catching fire. Un-proper cleaning of the unit voids the warranty but we replaced her unit as a one time exception. She then notified us again in April, 2015 that the new unit was smoking and sparking. We provided her complete cleaning instructions again as the new unit was also sparking from grease left in the cavity. The only thing that could be sparking is the grease left uncleaned in the unit. If the grease was allowed to remain in the cavity it will eventually melt the paint as the unit is continually used and will eventually expose the metal of the cavity. Once this occurs, the microwave can no longer be used. She was upset that we would not again send her a replacement but we explained that if the unit is not cared for according to the cleaning instructions in the Owner’s Manual, we can not replace it.

08/20/2014 (Approximate) - The consumer was in her living room and heard a very unfamiliar & loud noise of an appliance turning on coming from her kitchen. When the consumer went to her kitchen, she noticed her microwave oven had turned itself on. The consumer tried shutting off the unit and was unable to. When the consumer touched the outside of the microwave, she noticed that it was very hot to the touch, something that had never happened before. The consumer proceeded to unplug the unit. According to the consumer, all this occurred within fifteen seconds.
The consumer contacted the Fire Department because she did not feel safe plugging the unit back in. When they arrived and tried to plug in the unit, it would not turn on. The Fire Marshall informed the consumer that the unit was dead and that they wanted to throw it away because of the safety hazard that it posed. The Fire Marshall informed the consumer that it was a good thing that she was in her home because if not, there most likely would have been a tragedy.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained what had happened with their unit. She asked to be called back by an Executive but never was.
When the manufacturer did not call the consumer back, she proceeded to file a report with the Better Business Bureau, who also referred her back to the manufacturer. The consumer also contacted her State Attorney General’s Office to let them know of the incident.
01/15/2015 (Approximate) - The consumer contacted the manufacturer. This time, they asked her to send them the unit back so they can analyze and inspect it.
03/24/2015 - The consumer received a letter from the manufacturer informing her that they would send her the microwave back as it was in perfect conditions and that nothing could be found wrong with it when they had eval. it.
The consumer does not want to receive the unit. The consumer has no injuries to report. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard as the fire department also did. The consumer does not want another microwave oven, ever. Esp. the one that was hers and is a fire hazard. The consumer will ask Emerson Radio Corp. to send it back to her, keep it in box, in case CPSC needs to examine it. This is what CPSC advised the consumer to do.

(4/27/2015) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: Emerson Radio conducted a full evaluation on [REDACTED]’s returned microwave and could not find any of the problems she mentioned in her complaint. Our technicians provided detailed pictures at each step of the evaluation and thoroughly tested it for a total of 4 weeks to attempt to duplicate this concern. Nothing at all was found not working or faulty on this unit. This report is available for review if necessary.

The product, in the report: Emerson MW8999RD 900 Watt Microwave Oven

Microwave oven used for reheating leftovers. Microwave timer had ran to zero and stopped operating. Food was taken out and consumed. 30 minutes later occupant left the apartment. After 2 hours occupant returned to apartment to find smoke billowing out of the apartment. Called fire department. Fire department reported that the microwave was the cause of the fire. Fire caused approximately $10,000 in damage. No loss or harm to human life occurred.

Caller stated that whenever she opens the counter top microwave it powers on, without using the the function buttons. The unit has to be unplugged to stop it from running. This has been ongoing for a month. She unplugged the unit and is currently not using it.
The unit is out of warranty, she stated that she read online that the company is reluctant to assist when consumers are having these safety issues with the microwave. The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.

The Emerson Owner’s Manual that is supplied with each microwave clearly states the unit’s cavity must be wiped clean after each use to avoid grease from migrating into the electrical workings of the unit. If this consumer is sure it was cleaned regularly then she should contact our Customer Affairs office at 1-800-898-9020 and provide Case# 79001. They will provide return instructions so we can evaluate the unit. Please note, if the unit is returned by the consumer damaged in any way or dirty inside, it will not be evaluated and it will be the responsibility of the consumer to pay the return shipping to receive their same unit back without being repaired or replaced.

Yesterday I opened the Emerson microwave oven at my work (a law firm in Minnesota). When I opened the door, the microwave turned on-light on, table rotating, fan on, microwave cooking. I closed the door, checked to see the oven was off, reopened it, and it did the same thing. Eventually I hit the minute button, then the cancel button, and when I reopened the microwave it was off. This morning when I went to microwave my breakfast it did the exact same thing.

I purchased this Emerson Microwave from Walmart about 3 years ago. The microwave itself works- heats etc. However, the microwave door is melting from using the microwave as instructed. I have contacted Emerson and basically was told to throw away the microwave and discontinue using it. As i explained to the representative that this was not an issue of the microwave not working which would be the warranty which is expired but a safety issue. I tried requesting a manager and was sent to voice mail and my phone calls have not been returned. As a consumer, I feel that Emerson should had been more concerned with this safety issue and made a report as well as trying to address this issue.

During that call it was determined the Manufacturer’s instructions listed in the Owner’s Manual were not followed. The Manual states the unit must be wiped clean after each use and harsh abrasives can not be used. The paint peeling and bubbling is always caused by one of 2 things. 1. When grease is allowed to remain in the cavity and with continued use becomes super heated to melt the internal paint on the door frame. 2. Using harsh chemicals to clean the unit will strip the paint and allow the metal to show through. Once this occurs, sparking and possible fire may occur so the consumer was advised to discontinue use of this unit. This is not a defect but was caused by not following operating procedures. Not following the instructions provided in the Owner’s manual voids the manufacturer’s warranty.

Emerson Microwave MWG9115SL suffix G. Microwave turned itself on and ran unexpectedly. Here’s what happened. First I microwaved a cup of water for 1 minute. The beep sounded to indicate the cycle was complete and I opened the door, took out the cup, and closed the door. About 5 seconds later I hear the microwave running again. The motor was running, the light was on, and the table was turning. The display showed “0:00” the entire time this happened. I summoned my husband. He first yanked open the door which stopped it from running, and then he unplugged it. We have not plugged it back in since, and intend to discard the microwave.
Other details - We’ve owned the microwave about 2 years old and it is cleaned regularly. It was used 3 or 4 times a day on average to microwave food and drinks, and the heating element feature was used once every couple of months.
The bottom of the inner chamber is rusted where the enamel has been worn away from the turntable. In the past we also have periodic arcing incidents and occasions where the microwave shuts down mid-cycle and cannot be used again for 15 minutes (apparently after cooling down). (9/22/2014) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: All Emerson microwaves come with a 12 month Manufacturer’s Warranty where we will repair or replace the unit provided all instructions provided in the Owner’s Manual were followed. Based on the information provided on the CPSC report, the enamel(or paint coating in the cavity) would not wear away with normal use of the turntable. There are 2 things that cause the paint to peel: 1) Leaving grease or food debris to remain in the cavity with continued use or 2) using harsh chemicals to clean the unit. The manual clearly states the unit MUST be wiped clean after each use using mild detergent and warm water in order to avoid sparking and arcing and the unit possibly catching fire. If the paint has bubbled, the metal underneath is exposed and the unit is no longer safe to use. Emerson does not recommend this unit is used again.

(12/17/2013) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: It is evident by the picture submitted that this unit has some deep scratches in the paint in the cavity and that’s where it is now rusting from. This is not a defect but was caused by negligence by the consumer. If the unit had deep scratches on it when purchased, the unit would spark the first time it was used but it has been used for several years with no issue. Either something was placed in the unit to cause the scratches or the consumer used a harsh abrasive to clean the unit and it scratched the protective paint coating. Once the paint is damaged- it will rust and the microwave should not be used any further. This is consumer neglect and not a defect in the unit itself.

I have an Emerson MW9325SL microwave. It is four years old. Never had a problem until last week. The door seemed to be not latching properly. I used the microwave to reheat something, it shut off, I took the item out of the microwave and shut the door. The microwave then started to hum as if it were trying to work, but the turntable wasn’t working and it started to smoke. I stopped it immediately and unplugged it. My husband looked at it when he came home, it worked fine, of course! That was on 11/27/13. This morning, 12/2/13 he started to heat his oatmeal in the microwave and when he started the unit, it tripped the breaker. We are not trying to fix this or give it one more try.

While using the Emerson microwave model MW8998B to steam vegetables (a prepackaged set up intended to be steamed in the microwave), the microwave started smoking from the door. When the unit was stopped, the front door had melted at the top to the main unit at approximately the center of the door. The unit is hardly used and kept very clean. there was no food or foreign objects between the door and the unit and there was no fire damage to the interior of the unit. the door sustained sufficient damage to render the unit non usable. it has not been determined if the door can be replaced of if it was the problem.

The consumer says that the unit started making a “roaring” noise, when she noticed flames leaping out of the side. There was also smoke emitting from it. She unplugged the unit. The consumer says that she does not use it much and cleans it thoroughly.
The consumer says the unit was on about one minute and 30 seconds prior to the incident. This happened one other time where she heard the same “roaring” sound. She did not see flames or smoke the first time, but she did smell the presence of smoke in that incident.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer who told her it was out of warranty. They would not take complaints for fire hazards and suggested she take it somewhere to have it repaired.

Caller stated that her microwave caught fire while it was on. She was using it a few days ago and she noticed that it sparked, she contacted the firm and they told her it was no longer under warranty. She was also informed to make sure that the unit was cleaned because grease could make it spark. She cleaned it thoroughly inside and outside and placed a microwaveable bowl inside, within a few seconds she saw a flash of flame. She immediately unplugged it. This was the second incident.
7/30/13 She contacted the manufacturer again and was told the same thing that they could not assist her the unit was not under warranty.
The incident left a black soot on the interior wall of the microwave. She feels that this microwave is a fire hazard and should be reported.

My Emerson MW9339SB began sparking, flashing and making loud noises even when nothing was in it. We have only had the unit about 5 months. Today I decided to take a look and when looking at the wave guide cover plate I noticed a dark spot on it, I removed the plate and there is arc damage between the cavity metal of the wave guide and the cover. I believe if this was on any longer than a few second it would have caused the wave guide cover to ignite. I see alot of problems reported with these units but ZERO recalls.

(7/1/2013) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: This consumer did contact Emerson 3 times and each time provided a different model# and store where purchased. Emerson offered to evaluate the unit to determine the cause of the problem but consumer stated it was thrown away. In order to evaluate it, Emerson does require to review the actual unit the complaint is being made about. Many times, sparks are the result of grease buildup in the cavity of the unit without it being cleaned after each use. This is clearly stated in the Owners Manual supplied with each microwave purchased. Unfortunately, we can not assist this consumer if the unit is not available for thorough evaluation.

I wanted to report the Emerson Microwave Red 900 Watt. My grandmother first purchased one 2 years ago. As soon as she brought it home it started to give our family problems. This microwave would start on its own, sparks would fly when something was cooking, and there would always be a loud noise out of the blue during cooking time. My grandmother ended up returning the first Emerson microwave then Walmart gave her another one of the same microwaves. the second microwave did the same things that the first one did. I decided to contact you all because my last straw with this microwave was when my eight year old nephew was using it, and it almost started a fire. This microwave needs to be recalled be cause it is a definitely fire hazard. I would hate to see a family lose their home or loved one over a faulty microwave. Please look into and get these microwaves off the market before its too late.

We was awakened this morning at 4:45 am by the smell of smoke and burning. Upon immediate investigation we discovered that the microwave had self-started. It was running when we ran to the kitchen. We do not know how long it had ran, but a half-loaf of bread that we had stored in the microwave was completly charred. It had definitely self-started as my wife and I was awakened and we were the only people in the house.
Your investigation into this matter is appreciated as had we not been home our dwelling would most likely caught fire.

Two children, [REDACTED], sisters ages 14 and 12 years old, respectfully, were burned to death when their house in Ringling, Oklahoma caught fire in the early morning hours of January 5, 2009. The Oklahoma State Fire Marshall’s Office determined that the cause of the fire was a faulty Emerson brand microwave oven that had been purchased in November of 2008 from a Walmart store in Ardmore, Oklahoma. The microwave in question was an Emerson Brand, Model #MW8119SB.
A wrongful death suit is currently pending in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma against a number of defendants including: Emerson Radio Corp., Walmart, Guangdong Galanz Enterprises Co., Ltd. and others.

(2/4/2013) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: This popping sound is usually due to grease buildup in the cavity. The Owner’s Manual requires the inside of the unit to be cleaned after each use with mild detergent and warm water. If it is not, grease continues to heat up and cause the mwo to spark and possibly catch on fire as is stated on the unit and Owner’s Manual. If the unit was not cleaned regularly, the warranty has been voided. If it has ben cleaned regularly and has no grease in the cavity, the consumer should contact Emerson so they can conduct a thorough evaluation on the unit at 1-800-898-9020. If it was not cleaned previously, and is only cleaned now- the damage has already been done and the mwo is not usuable and can not be returned for an evaluation

I bought a Emerson MW8991SB 0.9Cu.Ft. 900 Watt Touch-Control Microwave Oven, Stainless Steel little did i know this microwave is a FIRE HAZARD!Huge spark flew out of the back and the inside was lite up with sparks as well the whole inside was burned and in the back of the microwave to.I am very concerned with this prouduct because it is still on the market and no recalls haver been called on it.Thank god i was home when my children used it because the chances of my home burning down where very high do to this microwave.Please recall this product made by emerson before someone looses there life and or there home. (1/7/2013) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: 95% of the time, sparking is caused by grease or food particles that remain in the cavity and become super heated through continued use without cleaning. The Owner’s Manual provided with each mwo states unit must be wiped clean after each and every use. If consumer is sure unit has been cleaned regularly and is still sparking- they may contact Emerson at 1-800-898-9020 and provide Ref# 60279 and we will arrange the p/u the unit and conduct a complete evaluation. If it is defective we will replace it free of charge. If it is found dirty and not cleaned regularly, we will NOT replace it and the consumer will be responsible to pay the return shipping charges of $40 to get the same unit back.

(12/17/2012) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: Emerson attempted to contac tthis consumer to arrange to pick up and evaluate her microwave to determine the cause of the sparking. 99% of the time, the sparking is caused by grease that has accumulated at the top of the cavity by the grilling unit. This consumer is claiming the unit is clean and therefore an evaluation would be required. We have left several messages for the consumer and await her response to allow us to pick it up.

I have an Emerson microwave model: MW9339SB that was just at the end of the one-year warranty when this incident occurred. A few weeks ago I put baking chocolate in a microwave-safe dish to melt. The microwave immediately began sparking and making loud noises. I immediately turned it off. The chocolate smelled burnt and was not melted. Since then, other foods usually do not cause that same problem, although one time the microwave did spark with a different food item in it.
I tried two other times to melt chocolate, and every time the same sparking, burning occurred. When contacted, the company said to send a number of parts back and they would send me a new one. However, after reading a stream of similar complaints on the internet, I do not want an Emerson microwave.
Why isn’t there a recall as this is certainly a safety issue?
Is there any recourse for the consumer? Apparently they have known about this problem for a long time yet they continue to sell this item.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

The unit is a 900W microwave and chocolate should be melted at a reduced power level in order for the butter content of the chocolate not to spark. The consumer should adjust the power level to 40% and attempt to melt the chocolate again with the microwave set at minimal seconds and should check it at intervals of 30 seconds to insure it is melting correctly..

It has always sparked out little flashes, but it has now caught on fire. My 6 and 7 year old daughter was popping popcorn when the inside sparked up in flames. The Emerson 900W Microwave Oven MW8999RD/MW8999SB has a poorly designed unbalanced rotating tray. The tray tends to slip if anything more than a cup of coffee is heated on it. When trying to remove the heated item, the slipping of the tray caused minor burns only because I stepped away from it and did not get the full impact of the spilled liquid. Otherwise the burns could have been more serious.
I wrote to the company about a month ago and have not received a reply.
The incident date is actually multiple times in the past 8 months.
It could be very dangerous for elderly or disabled people or children, even if they are being careful.

We purchased an Emerson microwave model MWG9115SL at about one year ago. On the inside compartment, at the top where there is a heat shield for a broiler element, we had an arc and momentary fire during regular usage. The arcing was sufficient to ablate material from the heat shield and put a burn scorch mark on the roof of the microwave.

Caller purchased his microwave April 21st, 2011 and had no problems with it until Thursday, September 13th, 2012.
Caller was sitting in his living room, heard noise coming from microwave in kitchen, he entered kitchen, reset microwave by turning off then on again. All seemed fine through the evening with no other incidents,
He went to bed but was awakened by the “dinging” around 2:00AM, he went to his kitchen, realized the microwave was turning itself on, running for approximately 30 seconds, then turning off then turning on again for same amount of time. He touched the microwave and it was extremely hot, he then unplugged the microwave.
He called the manufacturer and they said they had never heard of it and that possibly it was a power surge. They asked him to cut the cord, take the sticker off and dispose of the microwave. He states that he sees this as a way of disposing of evidence.
He then called a friend who is a mechanical engineer and was informed that it is impossible for a power surge to turn the microwave on and off. It could fry the board but could not turn it on and off.
He then contacted his wife, asked her if she would google, “microwave and fire” and she came up with CPSC. Caller is asking that CPSC Investigator look at this microwave and identify the problem, then recall it for the safety of the public.

My microwave, and Emerson MWG9115SL, was being used normally, ie, most days I warm up my cooling coffee in the morning. I warmed some up then ran outside to get the kids on the bus etc. When I stepped back inside the whole house smelled like burning plastic. I had checked all over the house before I noticed the hum coming out of the microwave. The light was not on, the timer was not running, but the microwave was running and sparks were visible. I have to open the door and unplug it to be certain it won’t run on it’s own. I contacted Emerson about this but they refuse to help, stating that it would be out of it’s one year warranty period. I’ve owned this unit for about 2 years, purchased it new from Wal Mart. I don’t think 2 years is too long to expect your microwave to NOT burn down your house, which I believe mine nearly did judging by the sparks and smell.

The consumer stated that he turned on the microwave on the popcorn setting for approximately 3 minutes. The consumer stated that the 3 minutes ended and he opened the door to remove the popcorn. He stated that when he closed the door to the microwave it turned on without him setting a time or pressing start.
The consumer stated that at the moment he stated that even if you turn a time on the microwave after the timer stops, the light inside turns off, but the heating element continues working.
The consumer stated that he decided to unplug the microwave. He stated that at the moment he would plug the microwave on only when he needs to use it.

I began to smell a hot plastic/electronic burn odor in my house. As I began to investigate, I discovered that my microwave was “humming.” Investigating further, the top and the sides were too hot to touch with bare hands. When I opened the door, the humming stopped. I did a 30 second cycle with a cup of water, and the microwave functioned normally - but the humming continued after the beeper stopped at the end of the cycle.
Investigating further, I placed another cup of water inside the microwave and shut the door - but didn’t operate any type of cycle. Within three minutes, the water was boiling even though the microwave was “off.” I have never seen a microwave fail in the “on” position before, and felt it was worth reporting.

Emerson Microwave MW9339SB. Sparks and fires when used to defrost products. There are quite a number of incidents reported online by others. This could be a real danger - especially if used by a child. It could also be a real danger to any senior, person with heart condition. We removed the burning food to a closeby sink - there could have been a fire in the condition. I experienced skin burs and applied topical medication. We were lucky.

I own a microwave combo from Emerson MWG9111SL.. It was manufactured in April 2007.. It overheats and then shuts off for twenty minutes at a time or more.. there is NO electricity running on the unit when it does this.. It is also noted the exterior of my microwave is scalding hot when it overheats, you can nearly be burnt when touching the outside.. I have never used the unit to roast or grill with the overhead unit, but It seems as though that may be why it gets so hot. It also does not heat correctly.. For instance i just placed a pot pie in the microwave for 5 minutes.. in that five minutes the oven overheated and shut off , but the pot pie was undercooked and even cold in the center. I have had this oven for three years and purchased it at Walmart.. it makes me nervous to use it..

I purchased an Emerson microwave model MWG9115SL Suffix D from walmart. Within the first couple months it started making a buzzing sound louder than normal, I looked it over and could not find the source of the noise. I disregarded the noise as normal as I had not paid that much attention to its operation in the past. A few months after and it is shooting bolts of lightening like a Tesla coil. I was heating a couple hot dogs in the microwave for the kids. While fixing the buns I looked up and noticed molten metal falling on the paper plate they were cooking on. I immediately unplugged the unit and put the fire out that was burning the plate. I am glad I noticed the arching and was able to stop the self destruction of the microwave before it caught my house on fire or killed someone. I have kept this microwave unplugged and discontinued use. When making the decision on the purchase of this microwave we chose Emerson for the quality and features, it also happened to be the most expensive unit walmart had at the time(you get what you pay for). If the microwave is left unattended and goes unnoticed IT IS A FIRE HAZARD!!!

The product, in the report: I have an emerson microwave w/a built in grill that sparks nearly everytime I use. Sometimes it only sparks once, then is fine. Other tims the microwave hums and sparks and I shut it off and re-start it. It is also charring inside of the unit from the fire sparking.

I have an Emerson MWG9115SL Microwave oven that I was given as a gift from WalMart. It was purchased around Nov. 2010 I believe. I began using last May (2011). The microwave sparks from the top right corner inside and makes a humming noise about half the time I use it. I am scared to use it for more than 20 seconds at a time. It also blew my electric outlet and I had to go to circuit breaker to reset. This is a fire waiting to happen.
Since I don’t have a receipt and it was purchased several months before I received it, I was not able to return to Walmart. I believe it is now out of warranty.

Every now and then it would male loud popping noises and lightning-like sparks would flash. Other times, after the unit ran it’s cycle, it would still be ‘humming’ loud like the motor was still running, so I would unplug it for a while then plug it back in. Now, it’ll run it’s cycle and stop but start again when we open the door. I’m concerned We’ve been exposed to high amounts of radiation. We have to unplug the unit before opening the door.

The Emerson Microwave (Model No. MWG 9111 SL) (S/N 80203976GG) was purchased at our local Walmart store located on Trenton Avenue. It was purchased on July 27, 2008. We have our original receipt and we also have the Owner’s Manual from Emerson. These items were kept together for reference purposes. This microwave was used in our kitchen for its intended purpose - as a microwave. And It has been properly cleaned and maintained. The oven began shutting itself while in use within the past three months. As of Jan., we no longer use it for fear of a major fire especially if we are not standing there to supervise whether it will shut down or not. Anything placed in the microwave shuts it down. Microwaveable popcorn seems to trigger it almost every time. It overheats and is extremely “Hot”. It actually blew out a fuse in our home which is a sign that something is drastically wrong and could actually lead to a wall fire.
Please let us know what else you may require and what we should do via contacting the company. Our biggest fear is that fires may have occurred or may happen and that is unacceptable. Loss of life or serious injury needs to be avoided. The finger burns that I received were enough for us to realize that this product is a danger.

In the past year the purchase of Emerson equipment model no: MWG9115SL has led us to believe this is a very inferior product as well as very dangerous. We are professional chefs and looked purchasing this product for our home as a replacement for past year failure of our other microwave. The product has done what it has done to just about every other consumer that has purchased this. We call it the “Tesla Effect.” It emits sparks from the grill combo mounting screws near the top of the piece of equipment. It has also, in the past, effectively melted some plastic wrap that was placed over a container of green beans that we were attempting to quick blanch. This is not only very dangerous, but very unacceptable. We wanted to further note that we keep every single piece of our kitchen equipment at utmost health department status. Meaning there is has and never will be any reason for faulty equipment due to lack of cleanliness. This is a manufacture error and most likely needs to be recalled, we are not the only ones with this very same issue. There has even been video evidence posted on youtube.com.

Bought my microwave (Model # MWG9115SL) in September 2010 from Walmart in Florida. Upon using the microwave I started to hear a popping sound. I thought it was because of the grill portion on the top. I am religious in cleaning the product with natural vinegar on a regular basis and making sure that all food was covered while microwaving to avoid spillage on the grill portion of the microwave. Over time the popping became more apparent and finally I observed a near fire inside of the microwave as I was warming chocolate for my baking! I was frightened and immediately unplugged the unit and investigated further. The sparks were coming from the grill portion (as I feared prior). I have read the responses from Emerson accusing people of not properly cleaning their microwave and having food build up inside of the unit, but I never had build up inside of my unit and clean it according to the manufacturers recommendations. When a consumer pays close to a hundred dollars on a microwave, it is an investment.. not a liability to have in the household. My unit still looks brand new and is useless, unless I want to start a fire. I am sure that every complaint that is being filed is NOT the consumers fault every time, especially since we all have the same complaint. I would suggest that this product is looked in to for it IS a fire hazard and is potentially dangerous in ANY household.
I did not contact Emerson due to wanting to immediately report this ongoing situation with the proper authorities first and that I know I am out of the 12-mth warranty and that I refuse to ship a 1550 watt microwave to the manufacturer to find out that they will blame their lack of workmanship and reliability on me, the consumer.
I am willing to provide pictures of the unit condition and pictures of the interior condition (it looks new, except for the area where the fire startedl).

This complaint is regarding an Emerson 1100 watt microwave oven and grill. The model number is MWG9115SL. After many uses, the oven began to show electrical arcing. The problem now has progressed to pieces of the top grill burning and falling off. The pieces falling off were from the covering surrounding the screws holding the top grill cover to the microwave oven. There is also another burnt component that is on the top left hand side of the grill and held in place by a screw. This component looks like it may have been attached to the top grill heating element. There is a consumer complaint website at http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/emerson_microwave.html that shows consumer complaints about the same microwave oven. I feel that this microwave oven is a fire hazard and should be looked at for a possible recall. Thank you.

Consumer stated that he was using the microwave he smelled an odor of electrical fire and there was a sound emitting from it like it would explode. I purchased an Emerson microwave oven from Walmart in 1/8/2010 , model # MW7300W (suffix A) serial # 903039198MM and manufactured 3/09. Within 3 months of use I began to have problems with it in that a few of the buttons on the keypad would not work on the left side of the keypad such as express cook button for 1minute but I continued to use as too late to return and was still functional just couldn’t use all functions. On 12/2/2011 I had an incident with it that alarmed me and prevented furthur use. The microwave oven started to run by itself and then shut off by itself and fortunately I was home and unplugged the oven. Later in the day I plugged oven back in to try and use and as soon as I plugged in the oven started to run. I tried to shut off but would not do so and had to unplug to shut off.

(12/2/2011) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: 95% of the time, “sparking” as the consumer has described is due to lack of cleaning inside the cavity. If the consumer has followed the Owner’s Manual and wiped the unit clean after each use to avoid grease and food build up, Emerson would need to evaluate the unit to determine what is causing this sparking. If consumer is sure unit has been cleaned as required, they should contact our customer service dept at 1-800-898-9020 and provide referance # 42440. If the unit is evaluated and found to be defective, we will be happy to replace the unit for the consumer. If the unit is returned dirty and the sparking was caused by the consumer’s neglect, the unit will not be replaced.

(11/16/2011) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: Sparks generally occur when a build up of grease or food debris builds up in the cavity of the unit As this grease heats up with continual use, the unit will automatically shut off to prevent a fire from starting. The customer has been instructed to completely and thoroughly clean the inside of the cavity especially the top of the unit around the heating broiler coil. Our owner’s manual gives specific instructions to clean the unit inside after each use to eliminate any build up of grease or food which can cause sparking.

Our 8-month-old Emerson microwave (model MW8999RD) started making a very loud hum and then began emitting smoke and an acrid, burning plastic smell. We tried contacting the company via the numerous toll-free numbers, but it only said all lines were busy and would disconnect us. When it became apparent that we would need a new microwave, we checked online and dozens of others have had this unit catch fire, sometimes while not in use. I guess we were lucky ours only required the house to be aired out, but this is a dangerous appliance.

Last night I heard a noise , I thought was coming from the electrical fuse panel box area, and smelt a burning wire smell. I have had off and on problems where the unit would beep and experience a power failure. The unit is plugged into a surge protected outlet. This morning, my adult son was microwaving a [REDACTED] pizza, when the unit let out a plume of smoke. He immediately shut off the unit, but, also complained that his lungs felt like they were burning from the smoke. After reading other owner problems, I checked the grill area of the unit, and found that the burner area is all burnt, with a black and brown color burnt appearance, along with a black burn area where the screw is at the white attachment that holds the grill at the top of the unit.

We have an Emerson 1100w microwave oven and grill. My wife complained recently but it didn’t seem a big deal at the time. Tonight my 8 year old daughter was trying to pop a bag of popcorn. I heard the beep myself but thought not much of it, as it had “Supossedly” shut off. Seconds later I smelled smoke, and there was zero visibility in my kitchen and my children and myself were soon choking. Trying to vent the kitchen I could hardly keep from vomitting from the smell. I have since read the reviews and complaints describing this same instance. I am shocked and abhored that this product has not been recalled.

Microwave repeatedly sparks, emits popping sounds while interior light flickers in and out sporadically when microwaving food. I tried checking for any remaining packing material inside the grill part of the microwave, cleaning the microwave and plugging the microwave in to a different plug, and none of that helped at all.
I’ve had this microwave for 4-5 months. It is not heavily used, mostly for reheating food for a few minutes.

I purchased a Emerson microwave oven approximately 11/10. I was using it to warm a my lunch. It started to send sparks inside which startled me causing me to slip and fall to my knees. When i tried to get up quickly to shut it off it would not stop running. I then had to pull it towards me to unplug the microwave. This resulted in a menicus tear in my left knee. Ten months agao, my wife was using the same model microwave which started sparking when she was using it. We returned it to Walmart and they gave us a new one with no questions asked. I thought that was odd but I never question it. Then this new one kind of exploded in my face when I turned on the dinner plate setting. My face was abut one foot away from the door when it happened. I could not see the setting on the microwave which is why I had to get closer to see where the button was. About one year ago we gave our friend of our a gift of the same model microwave for her birthday. She told us the one we gave her started to spark, so she does not use it anymore. She never told us until she found out about what happened to me. I looked online and found out that this particular model had many complaints but was never taken off the market. To this day, Walmart still sells it. I told the manager about it and two assistant managers when I went back a day later. There are about twenty complaints about this microwave on CONSUMER AFFAIRS.COM and many other sites.

I was contacted by a concerned citizen that reported a defective microwave. I responded to the residence and met with the owner who informed me that a microwave he had purchased approximately 6 months earlier was now sparking inside the cooking area immediately upon use. I assessed the plate he was using to heat the food on and found it absent of any metal components. There was a burn mark approximately 2” by 2” noted on the right side wall. The owner stated he had not removed or in any other way changed any parts on the microwave. I took the unit outside to replicate the reported malfunction. I noted immediate sparking within the unit despite nothing other then factory parts inside. The oven was purchased at the Sierra Vista, Arizona Wal Mart. The manufacture is Emerson, it is a 900-watt unit, model number is MW9339SB. Manufacture date is August 2010. I contacted Emerson and asked if they had any information pertaining to this incident. I was informed that it is most likely food splatter inside that ignited or possibly a bad magnetron. There was food splatter present, however, do to the extent of sparking and burn marks; food splatter doesn’t appear to be the cause.

Our Emerson MW8999RD worked great from Dec. ‘10 until just now when it caught ON FIRE whilst I was melting a pat of butter. At about 10 seconds in, the wave unit cover started arcing and sparking and a plume of flame shot out of it. I quickly turned the unit off, opened the door, and could smell a strong odor of burning electrical wires/ plastic. We removed the unit from the house and quickly cut the power cord off so no one else could try to use it after us. It did not trip a circuit breaker or the power strip it was plugged into when it CAUGHT ON FIRE. I don’t even want to think about the possible outcomes had I not been right there WHEN THE UNIT CAUGHT ON FIRE, like if we were making popcorn or something of that nature where you throw it in the unit, set the timer and walk away. I did some research on the brand and saw that people with other similar Emerson models had the same problem, where it just randomly CAUGHT ON FIRE when in use. I would strongly caution anyone from letting their child(ren) use this product, and I would also not use it unless you are going to watch it the whole time to make sure IT DOESN’T CATCH ON FIRE.

(6/17/2011) EMERSON RADIO CORPORATION: The consumer did not contact Emerson Radio directly. This unit is still covered under our 12 month warranty period. We have contacted the consumer to arrange pick up of the unit to complete a full evaluation on it to determine the cause of the problem. Under our warranty, we will also provide the consumer a brand new microwave at no cost.

I have an Emerson Microwave oven model MW8992RD. It has been blowing the breaker off and on since I got it, and I just thought for some reason it was my wiring or something. Yesterday it started arcing and flashing inside and making loud scary sounds. I immediately shut it off and unplugged it. I went online to see what the history of this appliance was and read MANY consumer comments about not only this model, but other Emerson microwave models, doing the same things: Blowing breakers, arcing, and catching on fire. Apparently Emerson has not recalled. WHAT”S GOING ON???? If this many people are having DANGEROUS problems with Emerson microwaves, WHY ARE THEY NOT FORCED TO RECALL?? I was thinking it was just this one oven and almost bought another because it’s red, and I liked the color. But I decided to do the research on it , to see if anyone else had this problem, and good thing I did since apparently Emerson makes many that have these problems, not just the model I bought. THis is a SERIOUS safety issue, and I am shocked that you are not forcing a recall of every model that has this problem. Check it out online. THere are many, many people writing about this, and also saying they can’t believe Emerson doesn’t recall them. Someone could have a serious fire from these, or be injured. PLease, please make Emerson recall the ovens that have this issue. Thank you so much.

The product, in the report: Emerson Microve Model #MWG9115SL

I was popping popcorn in the microwave when there was a flash and a crackling sound. There is a screw inside the microwave that holds the heating element and it was arcing. Unpluged and wiped out and tried again, same thing. It is an Emerson model #MWG9115SL. I have had this microwave since 3/16/10, just a little over a year. This could be very dangerous.

Emerson would like to pick up unit to conduct a full evaluation to see what is causing sparking and also to provide the consumer a new unit as stated in our warranty.
