The product, in the report: Magic Chef Microwave

Text of consumer’s complaint received by Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection on October 24, 2014:

Purchased 8-27-12. Magnetron failed and started sparking. Called company 11-9-2012 and they issued case# [REDACTED]. They sent a repair man to replace the magnetron. The microwave is sparking again and starting things on fire again. Company will send the magnetron to a service dealer, but say that I have to pay for all of the service costs. I feel this is a defect issue by the company with similar complaints on the internet. If it isn’t part of a safety recall, it should be.

The magnetron should fail by not working instead of starting fires in the microwave. It can start sparking in 2 or 3 seconds with things like onions, potatoes, or oatmeal. I think the company should repair or issue a coupon for another microwave.

The manufacturer returned the purchase price of the product and the consumer’s concerns with them have been resolved.

The product, in the report: Microwave

Microwave DOM 07/2007 put in house 2007 by builder and caller began using it the end of 2007.

Saturday, October 20th, 2012 caller was cooking on stove, she states that she was nowhere near the microwave when the microwave turned on by itself, set to three hours and thirty five minutes.

Caller pressed “cancel” more than twenty times but could not turn it off but microwave would not turn off.

She then disconnected the microwave by unplugging it.

Her house is five years old so she is assuming that the microwave is five years old.

The next day, Sunday, October 21st, 2012 she plugged the microwave back into the outlet, waited to see if there was any problems and when there were none for over an hour, she went to the store but when she returned she walked past the kitchen to the computer room.

She had passed the microwave and it wasn’t on, however, after about fifteen or twenty minutes the microwave again came on by itself setting itself again to three hours & thirty five minutes with the fan going full blast.

She then got a ladder and disconnect power again.

She is reporting due to fire hazard.

She contacted the manufacturer Monday, October 22nd, 2012 and was told that they had a lot of these reported.
