Bosch microwave model number HMC80152UC\03 spontaneously caught on fire after use. Problem was identified as a faulty door switch that overheated.

My Son was heating up a bowl of soup and after he opened it to retrieve the soup, he heard clicking and popping sounds smelled the smoke and saw the flame protruding from the door latch hole in the front face of the unit.

We then turn the breaker off and extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher and move the appliance outside because it continued to smoke and smell make the house smell of electrical fire.

There were no injuries, but if me and My Wife were not home to act quickly, the house could have potentially been burned down as a result.

The product, in the report: The product is a Bosch 800 Series 30” Built-In Speed Oven with model# HMC80152UC/01 and FD# 9702 059039 and Manufactured Date of February 2017.

Our Bosch Microwave oven randomly started smoking when no one was even using it. We began first to smell an electrical burning smell, then later we could see smoke coming from it. I had to cut off the circuit breaker to get it to stop since it had nothing to do with actually running it. This could have burned down our house if we didn’t happen to be home to see it. Very dangerous piece of equipment.

UPDATED ON 1/20/2026: [Description of Risk of Harm = “The device was observed to generate harmful smoke when not in use and could possibly catch fire if not caught in time and power removed. This could result in a house fire.”]

The product, in the report: built-in microwave oven

The consumer heated a bag of microwave popcorn, and it cooked for approximately 2 minutes. With approximately a minute left, flashing started inside of the microwave, smoke began to emit from it and flames shoot outside of the microwave oven. The consumer immediately turned it off using the power control button. After inspecting the microwave, the plastic top interior screen part is blackened and shows signs of melting. There is a conventional oven underneath the microwave, and it seems to be working fine. (2020): The product was in the home when the consumer moved in 5 years ago. It was purchased and installed by the builder. The consumer searched online and saw other reports like his with this same manufacturer’s microwave oven. Even more startling, is that the other reports appear to incidents around the 5-year mark as well. (7/12/2025) The consumer called the manufacturer and reported the issue to them. They arranged for a technician to inspect the unit on 7/31/2025. There is normally a $179 service fee for the manufacturer to send out a technician, but they agreed to waive the fee. If the unit must be replaced, he said the oven would have to be replaced as well, the approximate cost is nearly $6,000.00. The consumer said he saw details online about a class action lawsuit for fires with this manufacturer’s microwave ovens.

The product, in the report: Bosch 800 Series 30” Over-the-Range Convection Microwave - Stainless Steel - Model HMV8053U

In December 2024, I was cooking at my stove when the top vent (part 00793413) from the over-the-range microwave fell off onto the cooking surface resulting in second degree burns. If I was not at the cooking surface or had left my food unattended to simmer, I am confident this would have resulted in a fire. I reviewed Bosch website and left my own review of the issue. There were dozens of complaints with the exact same issue. I have replaced the same part 4 times in the 3 years since it was installed.

My Bosch Microwave (FFD Number:9810/Model Number:HMD8451UC/03experienced what can only be termed a minor explosion. I attempted to use an authorized [REDACTED] repair service but was told (feel free to verify this) that Hawaii did not have any. I was then forced to use a third-party repair service who, on disassembling the microwave showed me scorch marks and warped metal above the magnetron. The repair cost me $800 but more importantly, risked burning my house to the ground with two young children inside. If I can send you picture of the metal, you will see that I am not exaggerating. I still have the part as well. I tried to contact Bosch with a similar electronic reporting mechanism but they replied to me “please contact customer service by phone” which I think was to give me the run-around (I have this email as well).

My Bosch microwave lit up and sparks started to fly inside. I was baking a potato and this happened within seconds of pushing the start button. Luckily, I saw the sparks and immediately hit the off button. If I had not been n the kitchen we would have had a fire and if I had not pushed the off button both my husband and I could have been injured and our newly remodeled kitchen badly damaged. The micro gets light use since we are somewhat seasonal in Florida. The micro is completely unsafe. The repairman said the magnetron, diode, transformer and wave guide all need to be replaced. Basically the micro needs to be rebuilt and Bosch wants me to pay for the parts and labor. This is outrageous...The micro was installed in late 2019 and was just out of warranty... I will not repair this machine. I do not trust it. Bosch should recall this micro and provide us with a comparable replacement.

The product, in the report: 800 Series Speed Oven HMC80252UC

The microwave tray that comes with the microwave/convection oven is defective. The trays wheels wear down, causing the metal to start sparking, creating a fire hazard. We have had the unit a little over 1 year with normal usage so its odd this would occur and so quickly. I researched online and it appears this is common. When I notified the company, they sent a generic email with a link to order parts. I do not get the impression the company took my complaint very seriously. I have included a photo that shows the black burn mark left behind on the wheel.

The product, in the report: It is a Bosch 300 series over stove microwave

We bought a Bosch microwave, believing Bosch to be one of the best manufacturers. But, after a short time of use, it let out a lout crackling and zapping noise. I was pretty sure that I recognized the sound as a circuit, arcing out. I figured that it was the capacitor, or the radar unit, and called the warranty in as a covered repair. I had them note the noise on the repair ticket. And, we waited a couple months, which was expected, due to supply chain and COVID related staffing issues, nationwide. The repairman noted it as a door short that occurs when someone opens the microwave door in the middle of a cycle, disrupting the timer, and three switches, in the door that have to balance a very particular way.... In checking reviews and complaints, published across the web, it seems that this is an absolutely common occurance with the model. And, that the repairmen, in their cases, would also, reliably blame it upon a switch in the door of the microwave. I’ for one, and having owned some of the cheapest microwaves on the market, have never had one that would have such a rule, not to open the door, to interrupt the cycle. In fact, it has always been a feature. And, there is no mention of any such requirement, in any of the manuals. Happily, we only smelled cooking wqire insulators, and our microwave only stopped heating, after an all clear by the repairman. It seems that most reviews include a violent tripping of the household breakers. We have since set another appointment for a repairman to come out to our house, and work on the unit. But, I might implore you to take a closer look at this model, as I believe it to be a hazard. And, it is likely in violation of any number of rules of proper procedure, both in manufacturing, and in service. It might be noted that the unit was only six weeks old at the time. And, this is apparently a terribly common issue. We have not been offered a replacement. Whatever the case, I don’t want my house to burn down. I just want to heat a meal. Thank you.

My Bosch Microwave Drawer HMD8451UC/03 Y, Manufactured July 2018 - started tripping the electrical circuit breaker (in our home built in 2018) about a month ago. We were uncertain why the circuit was tripping/or the source until last week when I did some investigating and see that there are thousands of complaints online regarding these microwave tripping electrical breakers, making sparking sounds, producing smoke and burning smells, and catching fire. Ours has since done all those things except catch fire and that is likely only because we have stop using it.

My wife touched the microwave handle to open the door, and the circuit breaker tripped. She was about to use it, but the microwave was not operating at the time. We reset the circuit breaker, and then it tripped the circuit breaker again about twelve hours later while it was not operating and without anyone touching or being near it. We moved the microwave to an outlet on another circuit to eliminate the possibility of the breaker being the problem. The microwave operated correctly for a day or so, and then went completely dead.

This unit was sent as a replacement for one that had the same problem. I have contacted Bosch service, but they will not give me any information on this apparent safety hazard because I do not have purchase documentation.

I searched and found that someone else has reported a similar issue with the same model to the CPSC. I also found that there are a number of reviews on the Bosch website that report this same problem: https://www.bosch-home.com/us/productslist/cooking-baking/microwaves/over-the-range-microwaves/HMV3053U#/Tabs=section-reviews/ There are responses to these reviews, so Bosch has previously been made aware of this problem but has apparently taken no action.

Because this product is tripping the breaker, it appears that it is drawing excessive current and could therefore be a fire or an electrical shock hazard.

(This happened after I contacted the manufacturer about the microwave unit setting off my circuit breaker in the house panel. “Bosch suggested” repairman was called in and said this was due to a faulty circuit breaker. I then had an electrician come by to replace the circuit breaker. Then tried the microwave. Thats when Sparks erupted. A potential fire and safety hazard)

I bought a new BOSCH microwave Model #HMV5052U/02 built in the wall above the stove in 2015. Today 3-16-2017 I placed some food wrapped in a paper towel to warm My smoke alarm went off and the alarm company called and told me to open all the doors and they would not hang up until the smoke cleared The alarm would not go off even after I opened the doors. I had a casserole in the oven below the microwave I thought something was burning in the oven opened oven door and did not see anything wrong just happened to look up and saw flames in the microwave I pulled the food and paper towel out with a oven mitt and the fire still continued to burn in the microwave. If I had not been home, I think our kitchen would have been ruined which we just remodeled in 2015. Also, bought a BOSCH stainless steel refrigerator at the same time as the microwave. The bottom panel has started to rust complained to BOSCH and they said there was noting could be done. Would not recommend this company.
