The product, in the report: Whirlpool Upright Freezer

Our freezer caught fire on the inside. Fortunately someone was home and unplugged it. We believe that the freezer has a defect that represents a fire danger.

The product, in the report: The unit began putting off a strange odor, then stopped cooling. When the repair man removed the panel on the inside of the freezer, his words were “what in the WORLD?!?” He immediately hopped up and unplugged the unit and called Whirlpool. They didn’t believe him and said they wouldn’t replace the unit. They had him send pictures. He told us they would contact us within 5 days. Within an hour he called us back to say they had contacted him to say they WOULDN’T be repairing it. We have yet to hear from Lowes or Whirlpool regarding our replacement or refund. NOTE: Once they process our replacement, they will be picking it up. If you want it, please contact us quickly. NOTE: I’ve tried to submit this report 4 times. Every time I get to uploading pics, the screen greys out and hangs. If you want pics of the freezer label or the burned liner, I have them and can email them.

Upright freezer began putting off an odd smell, then stopped cooling. When the repairman took of the panel inside the freezer, his words were “what in the WORLD?!?’. The liner behind the panel was completely burned/melted. He immediately jumped up and pulled the plug on the freezer. Then he called Whirlpool. He told them it was not repairable. They didn’t believe him and demanded pictures. They called him back within the hour and said they wouldn’t be repairing it. (He called us just to let us know.) We have yet to be officially notified by Whirlpool or Lowes of the status of replacement or refund.

Due to the burning/melting of the liner of this fridge, we believe it was only a matter of time before it actually caught on fire. While we only sustained minimal food loss, this could have been tragic. We would like someone to investigate to prevent others from being injured in the future.

  3. No one hurt

Made Jun 15, 2011, published by CPSC Aug 11, 2011

The product, in the report: Upright Freezers

This is concerning a freezer I had bought.

Whirlpool Freezer Model: EV161 NZRQ05 Serial: EWY1232166 Purchase date: 12-22-2009 Place of purchase : Menards - Muncie, Indiana

On 6/15/2011 I was driving back from taking my dog to the vet. I called my wife by cell phone and told her to go downstairs in the basement and make sure the dehumidifier was on because it was raining outside. She came back up and said the freezer was making a thumping or hitting type of noise. So I hurried home without stopping anywhere else.

When I got home I pulled about 200 Ibs of meat out and removed the racks and some screws form the freezer. The noise was coming from an air circulation fan behind a plastic cover. I looked at it and the fan blade had been backing up on the shaft and hitting the motor. This hitting was causing the fan to have gashes cut out in it by the motor. (See pictures)

I called Whirlpool service department and they said there was “no recalls” on this model number. (This info will be important later on in this letter.) They wanted to send a technician out to my house but it would cost me normal rates to work on the freezer. I declined. I then called CPSC. While on the phone I gave them the info they asked. After talking to CPSC I hung up and looked on the internet for parts for this freezer. There was a fan blade on the website for searspartdirect.com. I had notice the fan blade (sears part no. 439012) had been replaced by another part no.(1-B0250-102} I got ahold of a sears parts technician on line. He said the part had been changed in 2010 by whirlpool.

So I called whirlpool back up and talked to their service department again and told them about the blade replacement. They told me they had problems with the blade as early as 2009. (This means the fan was bad when I bought the freezer and Whirlpool knew it. ... }1 asked them why they didn’t let people know. They said their engineers didn’t think it was important enough. I told them I had called earlier and no one had told me about the fan . Duh ... ??????? They didn’t even offer to send me an updated fan ....

I then reported this to CPSC by phone after I had talked to Whirlpool.

This fan blade has the possibilty to stop the motor and cause it to overheat. Then causing a short or fire ...

Sears price for the fan blade was $7.10 + shipping & handling of about $B.99 I ordered one thru a technician 15 miles away for $ 7.10 + tax. I asked the technician if he’s had the problem of the fan before. And he said “Alot more than you might think.”( A technician normally does not report problems to the CPSC, they just fix them so CPSC would not hear of the problem other than by a consumer)
